Book SynopsisCet ouvrage se propose d'etudier les divers aspects du bilinguisme etrusco-latin. Ne des echanges politiques, culturels et commerciaux entre Etrusques et Latins, ce bilinguisme connut son age d'or a l'epoque de la romanisation de l'Italie et entraina progressivement l'extinction irremediable de la langue etrusque, au debut de l'ere chretienne, dans l'indifference generale. Pour analyser ce phenomene complexe, differentes sources sont ici mises a contribution: la litterature greco-latine, l'epigraphie etrusque et l'epigraphie latine d'Etrurie. Les auteurs anciens ne nous fournissent que quelques informations allusives sur les rapports linguistiques entre Latins et Etrusques. Les inscriptions etrusques nous offrent, en revanche, a travers les nombreux emprunts latins qu'elles renferment - onomastiques ou morphologiques-, des indices incontestables d'un bilinguisme sous-jacent. Quant aux inscriptions latines d'Etrurie, veritables temoins de la penetration du latin en terre etrusque, elles contiennent souvent de curieuses interferences qui trahissent de la part de leurs auteurs une connaissance reelle de l'une et de l'autre langues. Un chapitre important est enfin consacre aux inscriptions sans doute les plus emblematiques de ce bilinguisme: les bilingues etrusco-latines.

Peeters Publishers Die Grabreliefs Aus Dem Bosporanischen Reich
Book SynopsisThe book discusses the grave stelai and grave reliefs from the Bosporan kingdom. Occupying the eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula on the northern shore of the Black Sea, this ancient Greek state was situated in an important contact zone of the ancient Greek world. The permanent interaction of Greeks and indigenous peoples (the Scythians, others and later the Sarmatians) in this region resulted in a dynamic local culture. Subjected to long-term acculturation processes, this culture reflected elements of Greek and indigenous traditions. In this respect, the grave stelai erected in Bosporan necropoleis and their numerous relief depictions dating from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD are a unique source: they provide us not only with pictorial evidence for local identities, but are, ultimately, also of great value for our understanding of the development and transformation of this local culture in general. The book deals with problems of typology, stylistic developments and the (re-)evaluation of the chronology of the reliefs. A major part focuses on analysis of imagery of relief stelai (mainly from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD) and the development and originality of the iconography compared with monuments from Greece, Asia Minor and the neighbouring Greek cities of the northern Pontic region (e.g. Chersonesos). Increasingly dominant local iconographic solutions, such as the famous depictions of horsemen or soldiers, are discussed and are interpreted in the context of role-models and value-systems. Particular attention is also paid to questions concerning the validity of ethnic interpretations and the reflexes and deliberate use of contemporary local material culture in iconography. In addition, an attempt is made to embed the monuments in the context of the local funerary culture, i.e. the contemporary Bosporan necropoleis with their manifold forms of sepulchral self-representation. Consideration of epigraphic and literary evidence seeks to shed further light on the cultural and social dimension of these developments and phenomena. A comprehensive catalogue of over 1200 published grave monuments, including detailed descriptions, bibliographical references and information about find-spots etc. (based on analysis of literature and study in relevant archives and museums) completes the publication.

Peeters Publishers Ostia speaks: Inscriptions, Buildings and Spaces
Book SynopsisThis monograph provides a brief introduction to the material history of Ostia, Rome’s harbour town from ca 300 BC until ca AD 600, before centring on about one hundred Latin as well as some Greek inscriptions, some of which are previously unpublished. It focuses on inscriptions which are still present in situ, in forty-two places. They range in date from ca 100 BC until ca AD 420. They belong to and cast light upon buildings, monuments, urban spaces and tombs. Some of them were reused in floors after ca AD 250. Each inscription is presented in full, supplemented by abbreviated names and words, translated into English, dated, and commented upon from a contextual point of view. Sometimes inscriptions that are not in situ, as well as relevant ancient texts, are quoted and translated in order to sketch a broader picture. The comments are based on a critical evaluation of the most recent archaeological, historical and epigraphic publications. Several new interpretations result from own research. The inscriptions cast light upon political, socio-economic, religious (pagan and Christian), and funerary aspects of the multi-ethnic Ostian society, its relation with Rome and the Mediterranean world. The publication is intended not only for scholars, teachers and students, but also for historians, classicists, philologists, linguists, epigraphists, archaeologists and art historians. It may also prove a useful vademecum for those who intend to visit or have visited Ostia Antica.

Book SynopsisThis volumes contains 81 contributions on ancient wall painting presented in the form of papers and posters during the twelfth triennial meeting of the Association Internationale pour la Peinture Murale Antique (AIPMA) held at Athens from September 16 through September 20, 2013. 120 participants were guests of Radboud University Nijmegen and the École Française d’Athènes, in collaboration with the Netherlands Institute at Athens, and the National Hellenic Research Foundation. In recent decades there has been a growing interest among researchers in the analysis of paintings in terms of their context rather than as expressions of art in and for itself. Therefore the conference focused on figural themes, and to the iconographical and iconological problems of paintings considered in relation to their specific contexts. Which messages images in wall painting, from the archaic to the late-antique period (ca 700 BC-AD 500) conveyed to contemporary viewers in specific contexts and how were they received? Many contributions in this volume zoom in on the rationale behind the use of specific motifs in wall paintings, the syntax of decorative systems in particular contexts, as well as specific fashions in the use of figural themes in determined areas or sites in the ancient world. Within the series of BABESCH supplements, this book is a sequel to the third one of 1993 which contains the proceedings of the fifth AIPMA conference in Amsterdam. The two editors have carried out extensive research in the field of ancient mural decorations, especially in the context of Roman houses, villas, and temples, and were members of subsequent AIPMA boards. While Eric Moormann was responsible for the organisation of the Amsterdam colloquium in 1992, Stephan Mols organised the Athens conference in 2013, the proceedings of which are presented in this BABESCH supplement. Both Mols and Moormann are members of the Institute for Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Radboud University at Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Book SynopsisDer vorliegende Band ist die vierte von Gilbert Wiplinger, diesmal in Verbindung mit Wolfram Letzner, herausgegebene Publikation eines Frontinus-Symposiums als BABESCH-Supplementband zur historischen Wasserwirtschaft. Schon im Verlauf des Symposiums „DE AQUAEDUCTU ATQUE AQUA URBIUM LYCIAE PAMPHYLIAE PISIDIAE - The Legacy of Sextus Julius Frontinus“ (BABESCH-Suppl. 27) im Herbst 2014 stellte sich die Frage nach einer Folgeveranstaltung, für die sich Trier mit seinen römischen Großbauten und einer Verknüpfung zur Geschichte der Frontinus-Gesellschaft anbot. So konnte die Gesellschaft mit diesem Symposium hier auch ihr 40-jähriges Bestehen mit einer Festveranstaltung begehen. Im ersten Abschnitt des Bandes wird der Festakt zur Feier des 40-jährigen Jubiläums der Frontinus-Gesellschaft dokumentiert. Dieser beinhaltet die Erfolgsgeschichte der Gesellschaft, den Festvortrag, die Verleihung der Frontinus-Medaille mit der Laudatio sowie der Dankesrede des Geehrten mit neuen Forschungsergebnissen zum Değirmendere Aquädukt von Ephesos. Der zweite Abschnitt ist dem Veranstaltungsort Trier gewidmet: Die Geschichte der Stadt wird anhand der „Highlights“ der römischen Ausstellung im Rheinischen Landesmuseum erzählt und von deren urbanistischer Entwicklung berichtet. Die Trierer Ruwerleitung und die Barbara- bzw. Kaiserthermen sind dem Wasser gewidmet. Der dritte Abschnitt behandelt juristische Quellen sowie neue Forschungsmethoden in der Aquäduktforschung. Zum ersten Thema wird das moderne Wasserrecht den Texten von Frontinus gegenüber gestellt, dann wird die Herausforderung juristischer Quellen bei der Erforschung römischer Wasserversorgungssysteme aufzeigt. Zum zweiten Thema zählen die mit GPS und Photogrammetrie unterstützten Dokumentationsmethoden an den Aquädukten Roms und einfachere Methoden in Antiochia ad Cragum. Der vierte Abschnitt beschäftigt sich mit Aquädukten und Qanaten: Die große Zahl an Fernwasserleitungen in der Türkei in Katalogform, eine Inschrift der Druckrohrleitung von Alatri in Latium, die Aqua Alexandrina in Rom, der römische Aquädukt von Lissabon, die Wasserleitungen und Bäder von Lebna auf Kreta, römische Münzen zu Aquädukten und zum Wassermanagement, das Almstollensystem im Mönchsberg in Salzburg sowie zwei Beiträge zu Qanaten in Luxemburg sind Themen dieses Abschnittes. Der nächste Abschnitt ist den Thermen, Nymphäen und anderen innerstädtischen Wassernutzungen gewidmet: Die Stabianer Thermen in Pompeji, die Caracallathermen von Rom, die römischen Heilthermen von Aqua Flaviae sind Beiträge zum ersten, die unter Nero und Domitian errichteten Nymphäen am Palatin, und die Nymphäen in den griechischen Provinzen vor Hadrian zum zweiten Thema, wozu auch noch das sog. Mettius-Modestos-Tor von Patara als Wassermonument zählt. Das Macellum von Sagalassos ist der einzige Beitrag zur innerstädtischen Wassernutzung. Im letzten Abschnitt sind verschieden Themen zusammengefasst: Wasserspeicherung in den römischen Goldbergwerken auf der Iberischen Halbinsel, Druckleitungen mit einem neuen Wasserturm aus Ostia und römische Wasserhähne, Wasserknappheit aus römischer Sicht in italienischen Regionen, Wasserversorgung im Libanon, Wassermühlen im Bereich des Rheinischen Braunkohleabbaus und medizinische Aspekte von trinkwasserbedingter Bleivergiftungen im deutschsprachigen Raum. Das Symposium wurde mit Exkursionen zu archäologischen Stätten und Museen nach Luxemburg, Frankreich und im Raum Trier abgerundet.

Book SynopsisLo studio sulle 277 anfore puniche rinvenute nelle necropoli di Himera che si presenta in questo volume è frutto di una ricerca approfondita condotta a partire dei dati di scavo e attraverso un’attenta analisi e classificazione dei singoli contenitori, senza tralasciare le opportune analisi archeometriche ed epigrafiche. La possibilità di incrociare elementi diversi, con riferimenti cronologici spesso molto precisi grazie all’associazione con i corredi funerari, ha consentito di andare ben oltre la redazione di un semplice catalogo, seppure completo, restituendo uno straordinario complesso di materiali nella loro prospettiva storica e nel significato del quadro dei commerci tirrenici di età arcaica e classica. Le anfore studiate coprono un quadro cronologico molto preciso, dalla seconda metà del VII sec. a.C. al 409 a.C., data della distruzione di Himera, attestando forme di contatto e scambio di merci tra la colonia e i vicini emporia punici della Sicilia Occidentale: Mozia, Palermo e Solunto che dista da Himera solo poche decine di chilometri. Tuttavia, è attestato l’arrivo in questa città greca di anfore da trasporto provenienti da tutto il mondo punico: Sicilia, Cartagine, Sardegna e Spagna, con una notevole varietà di tipi che conferma la grande vitalità degli scambi marittimi e della circolazione delle merci che costituì uno dei fattori fondamentali di sviluppo e di prosperità per i centri costieri della Sicilia centro-settentrionale. In sostanza, fin dai primi decenni di vita, e con intensità crescente, i Greci ebbero rapporti “commerciali” con gli emporia punici e con la stessa Cartagine, come documentato dalla presenza di tipi di anfore rinvenuti in questa colonia greca, ma non ancora individuati nelle città puniche di Sicilia. Sappiamo dalla storia che le vicende di Himera sono segnate dai grandi scontri con Cartagine, dalla battaglia del 480 a.C. alla distruzione del 409 a.C., momenti di grande intensità che evidenziano forti conflitti, ma nello sviluppo quotidiano delle relazioni, che sono conseguenza anche degli scambi commerciali, l’intensa presenza di prodotti punici, lungo tutto l’arco di vita della colonia, sembra raccontare, eloquentemente, un sistema di legami molto solido. Greci e Punici entrarono si in contrasto militare, quando gli equilibri strategici e politici si incrinavano, ma sostanzialmente l’arrivo di prodotti, trasportati dalle navi che battevano la costa tirrenica dell’isola, è indice di un assetto generale molto meno conflittuale e duraturo rispetto a quanto gli episodi di guerra suggeriscono.

Book SynopsisDans les tragédies de Sénèque, la femme est depuis longtemps un objet d’étude. Plusieurs aspects ont été abordés, mais, aujourd’hui, une étude des discours féminins de ce corpus théâtral fait défaut. Dans ce contexte, il convient de mettre en place une méthode de recherche pour répondre, notamment, aux questions suivantes: Est-il possible de dégager une façon féminine ou masculine de s’exprimer sur scène? Si oui, quelles seraient les raisons d’une telle différenciation discursive et quelles en seraient les conséquences sur l’action dramatique? Quelle est l’influence de l’interlocuteur sur lesdits discours? Des héroïnes prennent-elles la parole comme des hommes, ou inversement? Voici autant de pistes explorées dans le présent ouvrage. Pour traiter ce sujet à la croisée des études du discours et des études sur la femme, nous avons recours à la logométrie. Cette recherche s’inscrit donc aussi dans une profonde réflexion méthodologique, puisque de nouveaux outils sont utilisés pour traiter ces questions inédites.
