Boydell & Brewer Ltd Medieval Arms and Armour: A Sourcebook. Volume
Book SynopsisAuthoritative reference guide, using the documents in which arms and armour first appeared to explain and define them. Medieval arms and armour are intrinsically fascinating. From the smoke and noise of the armourer's forge to the bloody violence of the battlefield or the silken panoply of the tournament, weapons and armour - and those who made and bore them - are woven into the fabric of medieval society. This sourcebook will aid anyone who seeks to develop a deeper understanding by introducing and presenting the primary sources in which these artefacts are first mentioned. Over a hundred original documents are transcribed and translated, including wills and inventories, craft statutes, chronicle accounts, and challenges to single combat. The book also includes an extensive glossary, lavishly illustrated with forty-six images of extant armour and weapons from the period, and contemporary artistic depictions from illuminated manuscripts and other sources. This book will therefore be of interest to a wide audience, from the living history practitioner, crafter, and martial artist, to students of literature, military history, art, and material culture.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Sexuality in Premodern Europe
Book SynopsisHow did sexual relationships work before, in and outside of marriage in the pre-modern era? What problems did contraception and sexually transmitted diseases pose? How did people deal with prostitution and pornography back then? What were the possibilities for same-sex and queer desire and practice? Using numerous examples and sources from across the continent, Sexuality in Premodern Europe shows that even in earlier centuries, sexual life had an elementary significance for the coexistence of couples and communities. It was just as decisive for how individuals saw themselves and others as it was for maintaining the social, economic and political order.Franz X. Eder interestingly emphasises the socio-historical view of sexuality, offering an apt foil for the cultural perspective which is so prevalent in the field. In this book, sexual behaviour is understood and thought about as social practice. From this vantage point, Eder deals with the function of the sexual in upbringing andTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Preface 1. Introduction 2. Reign of the Phallus: Greek Antiquity 3. Book Synopsis''Thrillingly unique, knowledgeable, perceptive and profound'' IAN DUNT''A light-footed journey along the fault lines of history.'' KATJA HOYERThe history of Europe told through twenty-nine key borders that define the past, present and future of our continentEurope''s internal borders have rarely been ''natural''; they have more often been created by accident or force. In Borderlines, political historian Lewis Baston journeys along twenty-nine key borders from west to east Europe, examining how the map of our continent has been redrawn over the last century, with varying degrees of success. The fingerprints of Napoleon, Alexander I, Castlereagh, Napoleon III and Bismarck are all there, but today''s map of Europe is mostly the work of the Allies in 1919 and Stalin in 1945.To journey to the centre of the story of Europe, Baston takes us to its edges, bringing to life the fascinating and often bizarre histories o

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Thistle and The Rose
Book SynopsisMargaret Tudor, the elder sister of her more famous brother Henry VIII, is the single most important Tudor figure of this era that historians have consistently overlooked. Married at thirteen to the charismatic James IV of Scotland, a man more than twice her age, she would learn the skills of statecraft that would enable her to survive his early death, and to construct a powerful position in her adopted country of Scotland as she dealt with domestic issues as well as navigating international relations with England and France.Often reviled for her hasty remarriage (and therefore the loss of the regency) the book shows that Margaret was damned if she did remarry and damned if she didn't. Her two subsequent marriages were both disastrous personally, but she never gave up. Her son attained the throne in his own right in 1528, largely through his mother's determination.Margaret's story is also one of fierce sibling rivalry with her younger brother, Henry VIII, a s

Harvard University Press Not Made by Slaves
Book SynopsisNot Made by Slaves describes the efforts of early-nineteenth-century businesses to end plantation slavery by promoting commerce in legitimate goods. Exploring the work of activists and businesses, Bronwen Everill adds an important dimension to the history of capitalism and its development under slavery.Trade ReviewImpressive scholarship…[Readers] will be rewarded with greater understanding of historical developments that changed the relationship between consumers and producers in a global economy in ways that reverberate to this day. -- Marc M. Arkin * Wall Street Journal *Everill repositions West Africa as central to the broader Atlantic story of 18th and 19th century economic morality, its relationship with commercial ethics, and the expansion of capitalism. -- Kofi Adjepong-Boateng * Financial Times *An exceptional interpretation of how the Atlantic world envisioned social responsibility and how some people faced questions about ethical capitalism that still vex us today. -- Alessandra McLoughlin * Origins *Offers a penetrating new perspective on abolition in the British Empire by spotlighting a particular cast of characters: the commercial abolitionists in West Africa who fashioned a consumer-focused, business-friendly antislavery ethics. These figures sought to prove the moral and economic superiority of non-slave labor while profiting from the transition away from slavery…Impressive. -- Dale Kretz * Jacobin *[A] brisk jaunt through decades of history…This is a book that intervenes masterfully in various fields…[and] can be read profitably alongside the burgeoning scholarship that seeks to understand the rise and evolution of capitalism itself. -- Gerald Horne * Society for U.S. Intellectual History *[An] incisive history of political economy. -- Michael Taylor * London Review of Books *Intriguing…Armed with fresh insights from the new history of slavery and capitalism, Everill argues that scholars must launch a renewed investigation into the origins of abolitionism in the Atlantic World. If—as the new history contends—slavery was itself capitalist, then we can no longer assume that the triumph of capitalism made abolitionism inevitable…Not Made by Slaves successfully knits together U.S. and West African history in novel ways that will make it especially useful and exciting for early Americanists looking to expand their transnational reach. -- Samantha Payne * Business History Review *A fascinating, well-written book about abolitionists’ efforts to construct an antislavery economic island in a global capitalism system shaped by slavery-generated profit. -- Edward E. Baptist, author of The Half Has Never Been ToldIn this deeply researched and elegantly written book, Everill follows the merchants and activists in West Africa, Europe, and the Americas who hoped to purify capitalism. Not Made by Slaves is a surprising, searching, and thoughtful examination of an overlooked but essential problem in the history of slavery and emancipation in the Atlantic world. -- Padraic X. Scanlan, author of Freedom’s DebtorsWhere did fair trade come from? As we learn in this innovative book, it emerged in multiple parts of the nineteenth-century Atlantic world as activists, merchants, and producers grappled with the complications of ending and replacing slavery. This is an important, truly transnational history of the fraught development of capitalism and the politics of ethical consumption that are still with us today. -- Lisa A. Lindsay, author of Atlantic BondsA rich, exciting, and thought-provoking examination of how a global system was constructed from the bottom up. Everill demonstrates how abolitionists turned consumers into the moral compass of capitalism, a shift that obscured the other ethical dilemmas capitalism posed, from poorly paid labor to the sale of ethically dubious goods—a framework of justification whose legacies continue to this day. -- Joanna Cohen, author of Luxurious CitizensIn an insightful and important book, Everill offers a fresh perspective on abolition by examining how abolitionists used free trade to undermine slavery and the slave trade. A real strength of the work is her focus on the central role that West African trade and radical experiments in Sierra Leone and Liberia played in shaping both Atlantic abolition and commercial reform. -- Randy J. Sparks, author of Where the Negroes Are MastersIn this groundbreaking exploration of ethical capitalism in the age of Atlantic empire and slavery, Everill digs down into the efforts aimed at making an immoral trade just. Giving equal attention to North America, Europe, and West Africa, she carefully documents the struggle to buy, sell, and consume according to ideas of free and fair trade. With the morality of global capitalism under the microscope today, this is a book for our times. -- Emma Hart, author of Trading Spaces

She currently serves on the group's executive committee. She also serves as vice-president on the executive committee of U.S. adoptee-rights organisation Bastard Nation.Trade ReviewIn many ways, the book is a toolkit for any campaigner engaging with the political system. It exposes a political culture which can too often be frustrating, intransigent, and even cynical when faced with uncomfortable truths. * Dublin Review of Books *[A] significant, moving and powerful account ... The book is a model of social justice campaigning that uses academia, advocacy and activism. * Irish Legal News *Ireland and the Magdalene Laundries: A Campaign for Justice is rightly, lucidly and incisively critical of governmental investigations that have been inefficient and unethical. In short, this book is vital for anyhow interested in the historical arc of social policy in relation to pariah groups. It also highlights the enormous efforts of the JFMR and their continued struggle for justice. * Critical Social Policy *This is a challenging and powerfully repetitive book replete with narrative detail. By far the most compelling elements are where the authors rely on survivor experience to propel their verdict of the insouciance and imprudence of the Irish government. The authors succeed in their ambition of restoring power to the survivors of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries. * Irish Studies *Ireland and the Magdalene Laundries: A Campaign for Justice details the group's efforts to gain apologies to Magdalene survivors from both the Catholic Church and Irish state, financial redress and comprehensive health care for survivors, and access to church and state archives for survivors seeking their personal records. * National Catholic Reporter *This brave book is an archive of an unfinished movement, a survey of the continuing harms of so-called 'historical abuse', and a set of demands for law reform and political change. In places, it is also a love letter to those who survived Ireland's Magdalene laundries. In devastating detail, it shows how Irish politicians, professionals and members of religious orders have resisted demands that these women be recognised as victims of human rights abuse. More than a description of Justice for Magdalenes' campaigning and research, it is an important challenge to official histories and excuses that stubbornly carry undeserved weight in Irish public discourse. * Máiréad Enright, University of Birmingham *The campaign for justice for the girls and women incarcerated in Magdalene laundries is one of the greatest acts of truth-telling in the recent history of Ireland. The walls of institutional denial have had to be demolished slowly and painfully, brick by brick. The experiences of those most involved in this task, so vividly detailed in this vital book, tell us so much, not just about a history that was shamefully obscured, but about the imperative for every society to really know itself. In helping the survivors to reclaim their dignity, this indispensable book also helps the rest of us to reclaim the true meaning of shared citizenship and common humanity. * Fintan O'Toole, Irish Times Journalist and Orwell Prize winner *It is impossible to describe the toxic fog of shame, distortion and indifference these writers worked through so the truth of the Magdalen Laundries could be seen in a proper light. No one wanted to know. They are my heroes. * Anne Enright, Author and winner of the 2007 Booker Prize *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements List of Abbreviations Foreword Introduction Chapter 1: Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries and the Lives Lived There Chapter 2: Survivors Begin to Be Heard Chapter 3: Anatomy of a Campaign: The Strategies Chapter 4: Anatomy of a Campaign: Developing a Human Rights and Justice Agenda Chapter 5: Publication of the IDC Report: The Campaign Within the Campaign Chapter 6: Never Tell, Never Acknowledge (…everyone knew, but no one said) Chapter 7: Ex Gratia ‘Redress’ Chapter 8: Bringing up the Dead: Burials and Land Deals at High Park Chapter 9: Conclusion: Who Do We Want to Be? Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Chronicles of Fernão Lopes: Volume 4. The
Book SynopsisVolume IV of the first complete English translation of the chronicles of Fernão Lopes chronicles the Battle of Aljubarrota (1385), which secured the throne for João I, his marriage to Philippa of Lancaster, and his reign up to 1411. Until now, the chronicles of Fernão Lopes (c.1380-c.1460) have only been available in critical editions or in partial translations. Comparable to the works of Froissart in France or López de Ayala in Spain, the chronicles provide a wealth of detail on late fourteenth-century politics, diplomacy, warfare and economic matters, courtly society, queenship and noble women, as well as more mundane concerns such as food, health and the purchasing power of a fluctuating currency. Lopes had a keen eye for detail and a perspective especially attuned to the common people, and his chronicles provide an invaluable source for the history of Western Europe in the later Middle Ages.Table of ContentsIntroduction The Chronicle of King João I of Portugal, Part 2, Tiago Viúla de Faria THE CHRONICLE OF KING JOÃO I OF PORTUGAL, PART 2 Bibliography of works cited

Columbia University Press Modernitys Corruption
Book SynopsisNicholas Hoover Wilson develops a new account of the changing category of corruption by examining the English East India Company and its transformation from a largely commercial enterprise to a militarized offshoot of British empire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.Trade ReviewA brilliant dovetailing of theory and history, Modernity's Corruption is also a deeply generative work for social scientists who work in a broad range of areas—moralities of power, states and societies, and the politics of administration—pertinent to the present day. -- Julia Adams, author of The Familial State: Ruling Families and Merchant Capitalism in Early Modern EuropeThis welcome study of corruption reflects on fundamental distinctions between public and private, abstract and particular, and on how standards of appropriateness emerge. Wilson grounds his analysis in careful research about the English East India Company, that famous organization from the early modern global economy. There is much here to think about. -- Bruce G. Carruthers, author of The Economy of Promises: Trust, Power, and Credit in AmericaWhat is 'corruption'? And what does it have to do with 'modernity'? In this carefully constructed and rigorously argued new book, Nicholas Hoover Wilson traces the historical genesis of modern-day understandings to internecine battles within the shapeshifting architectures of the British East India Company. An exemplary work of social science history. -- Philip Gorski, Frederick and Laura Goff Professor, Yale UniversityThis book will generate a good deal of interest from historians as well as sociologists. It offers a perceptive study of the East India Company when it was frequently under fire for corruption. It persuasively argues that shock at self-interested behavior helped to promote a more 'modern,' public duty-centered ideal for officials. -- Mark Knights, author of Trust and Distrust: Corruption in Office in Britain and its Empire, 1600-1850Modernity's Corruption is model work of historical sociology. Wilson asks a wonderfully rich and puzzling question: Why were notions of corruption transformed from situational ones to more abstract and universal concepts? By focusing on the case of England's East India Company in the late eighteenth century, Wilson advances the claim that the transformation had everything to do with imperial governance, and the fact that ruling at a distance necessitated the implementation of more abstract and political economic standards. What makes Wilson's work so compelling is that these broad theoretical claims, claims that have implications for how we understand the development of moral claims more generally, are so carefully situated in a deep engagement with the archival and pamphlet literature of the era. Empire, in Wilson's hands, becomes a central engine of modernity. -- Steve Pincus, author of 1688: The First Modern RevolutionAn exemplary work of historical sociology. * Sociology of Race and Ethnicity *Table of ContentsPrefaceIntroduction: Modernity’s Corruption and the Art of Separation1.
