  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Offenders or Citizens?: Readings in Rehabilitation

    15 in stock

The punitive prison currently dominates the practice of Anglo-American criminal justice, stigmatising its victims as perpetual 'offenders' and failing to change a majority of them for the better. Books of academic 'readings' sometimes profess neutrality over the controversies they invigilate. Offenders or Citizens? sits on no such fences, its pages reflect the fiercely partisan nature of the contest between rehabilitation and punishment. Probation, social work, youth justice, law, corrections, criminology, journalism, philosophy, politics, popular culture, psychology, anthropology, and sociology – the voices of participants, professionals, and writers from many realms are all represented in this lively selection. Its aim - to stimulate and furnish a debate about the proper place of rehabilitation within a plural, morally defensible, and effective response to crime. This book will be essential reading for both students and practitioners within criminal justice, who have an interest in the rehabilitation of convicted individuals, and providing an essential broader context to the 'what works' debate.

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Working Against the Grain: Re-Imaging Black

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisChristianity has been both the cause of oppression among Black communities and a source of liberation. Black Christianity has sought solace in the redemptive figure of Christ in its struggle for human dignity and freedom. 'Working Against the Grain' addresses the displacement of Black theology in Diasporan African churches by charismatic and conservative neo-Pentecostalism. The essays present a radical Black theology that empowers disenfranchised Black people whilst challenging White power to see and act differently. 'Working Against the Grain' is an essential text for all those interested in the pursuit of racial justice and other forms of anti-oppressive practice, both inside the church and beyond it.Table of Contents1.

Book Synopsis Study of race has become an established part of the curriculum - this book synthisizes leading research in the field Interest in Anglophone countries and across Europe - also across disciplines Big-name author with good track record Trade Review‘John Solomos is the too-often unacknowledged uncle of UK race and ethnic studies. This work brings together insights from his field-making career, reflecting his often stated belief that a commitment to teaching is central to the responsibilities of a serious scholar. It is destined to become a core work in the field, encouraging new generations of antiracist scholars to learn to think with the seriousness and generosity of the author’.Gargi Bhattacharyya, Professor of Sociology, University of East London, UK‘Race, Ethnicity and Social Theory is a politically astute, empirically grounded, conceptually sophisticated and open-ended contribution to our understanding of race and ethnicity at a moment when it is most needed. As popular movements and a new generation of activists embrace black lives matter, as statues of slavers and colonists are toppled, as universities grapple with what decolonising the curriculum might mean, and the racial inequalities of everyday life are as entrenched as ever, there couldn’t be a better moment than now to take stock of how we got to where we are today and how we might move forward into a more racially just future. This is simply a superb book. It provides a rigorous, intelligent and accessible pathway through the last half a century of race thinking, debate, politics and the racialisation of social relationships, in the UK and beyond. Most importantly, it provides an invaluable resource with which to develop intelligent public conversations about race’.Caroline Knowles, Professor of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK‘Nobody in the world but John Solomos could write such a great book, based on empirical research, theoretical clarity, a solid experience of teaching and an unbelievable knowledge of both academic production and controversies, and the public debates on racism and antisemitism. In a time when huge transformations affect these key issues, which are so central in the political and social life, John Solomos brings to bear a more accurate, precise, and up-to-date analysis. This book will be a classic point of reference for years to come’.Michel Wieviorka, Professor of Sociology, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, FranceTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Argentina's Economic Reforms of the 1990s in

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy has Argentina suffered so much political and economic instability? How could Argentina, once one of the wealthiest countries in the world, failed to meet its potential over decades? What lessons can we take from Argentina's successes and failures? Argentina’s economy is - irresistibly - fascinating. Argentina's economic history - its crises and its triumphs cannot be explained in purely economic terms. Argentina's economic history can only be explained in the context of conflicts of interest, of politics, war and peace, boom and bust. Argentina's economic history is also intertwined with ideological struggles over the ideal society and the on-going struggle of ideas. The book comprises two distinct components: an economic history of Argentina from the Spanish colonial period to 1990, followed by a narrative by Domingo Cavallo on the last 25 years of reform and counter reform.Domingo Cavallo has been at the centre of Argentina's economic and political debates for 40 years. He was one of the longest serving cabinet members since the return of democracy in 1983. He is uniquely qualified to help the reader make the connection between historical and current events through all these prisms. His daughter, Sonia Cavallo Runde, is an economist specialized on public policy that currently teaches the politics of development policy. The two Cavallos offer academics and students of economics and finance a long form case study. This book also seeks to offer researchers and policymakers around the world with relevant lessons and insights to similar problems from the Argentine experience.Trade Review"Cavallo's book superbly travels the economic history legacy of Argentina to give a unique perspective on the contemporaneous policymaking process in a resilient conflictive Society."Gerardo della Paolera, Professor of Economics at Universidad de San Andres and Central European University (CEU)"Domingo Felipe Cavallo and his daughter Sonia Cavallo Runde, have produced a masterful book. Superb! Full of fascinating insights. Highly instructive, thoughtful and very well researched. The authors provide a compelling analysis of Argentina, connecting its historical episodes with current events. Domingo Cavallo presents a first-hand insider’s view from the battlefields of economic policies. He is a courageous and patriotic warrior who fought hard to save Argentina from itself. This book is a must read! "Dr Jacob A. Frenkel, Chairman, JPMorgan Chase International, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Group of Thirty (G30) and Former Governor of the Bank of Israel"The history the economics and the politics of Argentina, which promised so much at the onset, has been a long tragedy. This book provides a fascinating account that will benefit all those who want to understand better, students, scholars and practioners. Domingo Cavallo has been fully engaged, with all his energy, in the workings of that history and he takes the reader with him in his passion." Christophe Chamley, Professor of Economics at Boston University and Directeur d'Etudes Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) at Paris School of Economics"Argentina’s history of policy mistakes and corrections has important lessons for all countries. Bad policies created high rates of inflation that weakened growth and destroyed financial institutions. Argentina has recovered in the past and is trying to do so again. This book is the best source for understanding this complex history. Domingo Cavallo brings unique insights and technical understanding to these complex issues." • Taylor & Francis Ltd Italy's 'Southern Question': Orientalism in One

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe ‘Southern Question' has been a major topic in Italian political, economic and cultural life for a century and more. During the Cold War, it was the justification for heavy government intervention. In contemporary Italy, a major part of the appeal of the Lombard League has been its promise to dissociate the South from the North, even to the point of secession. The South also remains a resonant theme in Italian literature. This interdisciplinary book endeavours to answer the following: - When did people begin to think of the South as a problem? - Who - intellectuals, statisticians, criminologists, political exiles, novelists (among them some important southerners) - contributed to the discourse about the South and why? - Did their view of the South correspond to any sort of reality? - What was glossed over or ignored in the generalized vision of the South as problematic? - What consequences has the ‘Question' had in controlling the imaginations and actions of intellectuals and those with political and other forms of power? - What alternative formulations might people create and live by if they were able to escape from the control of the ‘Question' and to imagine the political, economic and cultural differences within Italy in some other way? This timely book reveals how Southern Italians have been affected by distorted versions of a complex reality similar to the discourse of ‘Orientalism'. In situating the devaluation of Southern Italian culture in relation to the recent emergence of ‘anti-mafia' ideology in the South and the threat posed to national unity by the Lombard League, it also illuminates the world's stiff inter-regional competition for investment capital.Trade Review'A welcome contribution to the debate.' Italian Studies'Each [contributor] brings a new look at the south, and at Italy as a whole, overturning the idea of a single south with a homogenous problem in direct conflict with the north the book leads us to a new perspective on the south and offers the necessary mindset to re-evaluate much of what has been held as self-evident truth.'South European Politics and Society'Italy's 'Southern Question' is a worthy addition to the surprisingly limited literature on representations of the Mezzogiorno ...makes tough new methodical and theoretical demands and opens up many avenues for further investigation.'Modern ItalyTable of ContentsAcknowledgments, Introduction: The Dynamics of Neo-orientalism in Italy (1848-1995), 1. • Cambridge University Press Democracies and Dictatorships in Latin America

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents a new theory for why democracies and dictatorships emerge and then either survive or collapse. Scott Mainwaring and Aníbal Pérez-Liñán analyze the survival of political regimes in Latin America since 1900, arguing for a theory of democratization situated between explanations that emphasize long-term structural preconditions and short-term decisions by specific leaders.Trade Review'Democracies and Dictatorships in Latin America takes a comprehensive look at regime change in that region, explaining the surprising endurance of democracy there since the 1970s. Through a parsimonious yet comprehensive theory of democratization that is contrasted with other theories, Professors Mainwaring and Pérez-Liñán provide analysis that will revive interest in these topics. Well organized and well written, this timely book will be of interest to scholars, analytically oriented lay readers, and policy makers alike.' William R. Book SynopsisThis book provides a narrative historical, postcolonial account of African American religions. It examines how African American religions have been shaped by early relations between sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, American imperial practices in the 1700s and 1800s, and FBI repression in the twentieth century.Trade Review'Not a conventional survey of African American religion, which might trace religious origins and developments, this book is a groundbreaking exploration of the conditions of possibility for thinking about African American religion. Transatlantic empires, colonial enclosures, and political engagements, as Sylvester Johnson shows, are more than historical contexts; they are forces of religious formation. The book is an important contribution to the study of African American religion and the study of religion.' David Chidester, author of Empire of Religion: Imperialism and Comparative Religion'Sylvester Johnson, through his exploration of the economies of space, time, and discourse, reorders the materialities of the Atlantic world formation, allowing for a fresh interpretation of African Americans, religion, and modernity itself. In this work, African American diasporic religion can be seen as an epistemological probe enabling a critique of regnant notions while opening up new sources of data.' Charles H. Long, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Santa Barbara'Sylvester Johnson's book provides a new interpretation of the beginning and formation of what has often been termed a slave religion, but in a more refreshing and in-depth manner than previous books on the subject. This is an interdisciplinary work that bridges the gap between the old African spirituality on the slave coasts of Africa and the emerging New World religions practiced by Africans across the Atlantic. By so doing, Johnson has given new meaning to what African diaspora religions should mean in the discipline. The historical context in which he places the impact of colonialism, democracy, and freedom in the formation of slave religions surpasses what is available in the literature. This work will appeal to many disciplines, including religion, history, and African American and African studies.' Jacob Olupona, Harvard University, Massachusetts'This superb book locates African American religions in the context of the development of colonial empire in the Atlantic world. By placing religion in the conflicted network of geopolitics, economic exploitation, and ideological struggles over domination, race, and freedom, Johnson develops a fresh and sophisticated narrative of the history of black religion, freedom, and colonialism. This book will be mandatory reading for anyone interested in African American and Atlantic world history.' Albert J. Raboteau, author of Slave Religion'In this brilliant work Johnson offers an innovative examination and interpretation of the intersection of African American religions, colonialism, democracy, and freedom. He approaches the subject chronologically, in three time periods … A major contribution to the literature on African American religions, this book is a tour de force. Summing up: essential. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.' L. H. Mamiya, Choice'Johnson's book provides a persuasive, innovative, and broader global framework to understand African American religions that should be required reading for current and future scholars of black religion and American religious history.' Julius H. Bailey, The American Historical Review'… Johnson's African American Religions, 1500–2000 is a work of great clarity, passion and power that deserves deep and fervent reading for years to come.' Juan M. Floyd-Thomas, Black Theology'A century of work in slavery studies and critical race theory has exposed the terrors that underwrite American democratic freedom. Johnson's ambitious text steps into this multifaceted conversation … and reinterprets the history of African American religion through the lens of its central arguments …' Lucia Hulsether, Religious Studies ReviewTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1.
