Taylor & Francis Multicultural Counseling
Book SynopsisThis is the first book to explore the experiences of people of color in counseling from the perspective of individuals who are practicing counselors and were previously clients in counseling themselves. Marbley conducted a research study in which she interviewed eight individuals representing each of the major groups of color in the United States - African American, Asian and Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian â to obtain the stories of their experiences in their own words. These stories provide insight into the problems in and failures of counseling services provided to people of color. She quotes extensively from these interviews throughout the book, using the voices of the participants to highlight these shortcomings and personalize her discussion of the issues they have faced. A chapter is devoted to each of the groups of color, as well as one to counseling issues related to gender. These chapters provide an overview of the literature on the historical experiences of these groups in mental health and a discussion of the counselorsâ experiences, and conclude with implications and recommendations for counseling and psychotherapy with these groups. Information from follow-up interviews conducted 12 years after the original ones are also provided to compare and contrast the participantsâ responses to their earlier ones. Marbley concludes with a look at the need for a social justice movement within the mental health field in order to improve the experiences of and outcomes for people of color. Trade Review"This book is a courageous examination of the ways in which the counseling profession as a whole has failed to adequately understand and respond to the needs of clients of color. Dr. Marbley artfully weaves historical data with the powerful individual stories of professionals of color who speak from their experiences as clients and counselors over a 12 year period." - Betty Merchant, PhD, Dean, College of Education and Human Development, University of Texas at San Antonio"The author should be commended for taking on this critical topic and endeavoring to present the unique experiences of individuals of color as both counselors and clients. The inclusion of these often absent voices in the discourse of providing culturally competent counseling services is absolutely essential and refreshing." - Leonie J. Brooks, PhD, Associate Professor, Towson University"Marbley's book Multicultural Counseling: Perspectives From Counselors as Clients of Color is both ambitious and innovative... Her research has the potential of being groundbreaking. The personal narratives add a richness of context and story that elaborate the theoretical underpinnings of multicultural counseling." - Mary A. Fukuyama and Shari A. Taylor & Francis Ltd Alterity and Empathy in Post1945 Asian American
Book SynopsisThis book examines how Asian American authors since 1945 have deployed the stereotype of Asian American inscrutability in order to re-examine and debunk the stereotype in various ways.Trade Review"With Alterity and Empathy in Post-1945 Asian American Narratives, Hyesu Park adds another important contribution to the growing conversation about race and narrative form. In her work unpacking the figure of the ‘inscrutable Asian,’ Park explores the various ways that rhetorical and cognitive approaches to narrative can help readers to better understand the cultural work of contemporary Asian American narratives, while also compellingly demonstrating the continued need to broaden the canon of narratives upon which new developments in narrative theory are built." Taylor & Francis Ltd Working with Ethnic Minorities and Across
Book SynopsisMulticulturalism in Western countries continues to grow, but responsiveness to it with culturally sensitive research, policy and practice has been slower to develop. This lag could be accused of enabling institutional racism that is, culturally insensitive practices and policies can cause or perpetuate harm to non-mainstream children and families, the very thing that child protection systems are set up to address. Thus, it is critical that the field has a resource that clearly and comprehensively outlines the characteristics of cultural competency in the child protection system when working with ethnic minorities and across both mainstream and non-mainstream cultures, so as to equally protect the safety of all children.Unlike previous research, this book addresses discrete and relevant practice issues - how to work effectively with interpreters, whether or not to match caseworkers and clients based on ethnic background and what to consider when making plans for children in the outTable of ContentsIntroduction: What is in this book and who should use it Methodology: The Study on Which this Book is Based Part I: Setting the Scene1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Africans Are Not Black
Book SynopsisAfricans are not literally black, yet they are called black. Why? This book explores the genesis and evolution of the description of Africans as black, the consequences of this practice, and how it contributes to the denigration (blackening) and dehumanisation of Africans. It uses this analysis to advance a case for abandoning the use of the term black' to describe and categorise Africans. Mainstream discussions of the history of European racism have generally neglected the role of black and white colour symbolisms in sustaining the supposed superiority of those labelled white over those labelled black. This work redresses that neglect, by tracing the genesis of the conception of Africans as black in ancient Greece and its continued employment in early Christian writings, followed by an original, close analysis of how this use is replicated in three key representative texts: Shakespeare''s Othello, the translation of the Bible into the African language Ewe, and a book by the influenTrade Review'Kwesi Tsri's imaginative, meticulous and engaging argument has convinced me that "black" is a deeply problematic way of categorizing human beings. Tsri makes a compelling case, which neither those labelled "black" nor those labelled "white" can afford to ignore.' John Baker, University College Dublin, Ireland.Table of Contents1. Introduction2. Taylor & Francis Ltd Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle
Book SynopsisThe Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East gathers a diverse team of international scholars, each of whom provides unique expertise into the status and prospects of minority populations in the region. The dramatic events of the past decade, from the Arab Spring protests to the rise of the Islamic state, have brought the status of these populations onto centre stage. The overturn of various long-term autocratic governments in states such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and the ongoing threat to government stability in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have all contributed to a new assertion of majoritarian politics amid demands for democratization and regime change. In the midst of the dramatic changes and latent armed conflict, minority populations have been targeted, marginalized, and victimized. Calls for social and political change have led many to contemplate the ways in which citizenship and governance may be changed to accommodate minorities or indeed iTable of Contents1. Cambridge University Press African American Religions 15002000
Book SynopsisThis book provides a narrative historical, postcolonial account of African American religions. It examines how African American religions have been shaped by early relations between sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, American imperial practices in the 1700s and 1800s, and FBI repression in the twentieth century.Trade Review'Not a conventional survey of African American religion, which might trace religious origins and developments, this book is a groundbreaking exploration of the conditions of possibility for thinking about African American religion. Transatlantic empires, colonial enclosures, and political engagements, as Sylvester Johnson shows, are more than historical contexts; they are forces of religious formation. The book is an important contribution to the study of African American religion and the study of religion.' David Chidester, author of Empire of Religion: Imperialism and Comparative Religion'Sylvester Johnson, through his exploration of the economies of space, time, and discourse, reorders the materialities of the Atlantic world formation, allowing for a fresh interpretation of African Americans, religion, and modernity itself. In this work, African American diasporic religion can be seen as an epistemological probe enabling a critique of regnant notions while opening up new sources of data.' Charles H. Long, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Santa Barbara'Sylvester Johnson's book provides a new interpretation of the beginning and formation of what has often been termed a slave religion, but in a more refreshing and in-depth manner than previous books on the subject. This is an interdisciplinary work that bridges the gap between the old African spirituality on the slave coasts of Africa and the emerging New World religions practiced by Africans across the Atlantic. By so doing, Johnson has given new meaning to what African diaspora religions should mean in the discipline. The historical context in which he places the impact of colonialism, democracy, and freedom in the formation of slave religions surpasses what is available in the literature. This work will appeal to many disciplines, including religion, history, and African American and African studies.' Jacob Olupona, Harvard University, Massachusetts'This superb book locates African American religions in the context of the development of colonial empire in the Atlantic world. By placing religion in the conflicted network of geopolitics, economic exploitation, and ideological struggles over domination, race, and freedom, Johnson develops a fresh and sophisticated narrative of the history of black religion, freedom, and colonialism. This book will be mandatory reading for anyone interested in African American and Atlantic world history.' Albert J. Raboteau, author of Slave Religion'In this brilliant work Johnson offers an innovative examination and interpretation of the intersection of African American religions, colonialism, democracy, and freedom. He approaches the subject chronologically, in three time periods … A major contribution to the literature on African American religions, this book is a tour de force. Summing up: essential. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.' L. H. Mamiya, Choice'Johnson's book provides a persuasive, innovative, and broader global framework to understand African American religions that should be required reading for current and future scholars of black religion and American religious history.' Julius H. Bailey, The American Historical Review'… Johnson's African American Religions, 1500–2000 is a work of great clarity, passion and power that deserves deep and fervent reading for years to come.' Juan M. Floyd-Thomas, Black Theology'A century of work in slavery studies and critical race theory has exposed the terrors that underwrite American democratic freedom. Johnson's ambitious text steps into this multifaceted conversation … and reinterprets the history of African American religion through the lens of its central arguments …' Lucia Hulsether, Religious Studies ReviewTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1.
