Verso Books Liberals and Cannibals: The Implications of
Book SynopsisCan the tension between relativism and the moral universalism current in contemporary politics be resolved within the framework of liberalism? How is liberal society to interpret the diversity of morals? Is pluralism the appropriate response? How does pluralism differ from the widely condemned ethnocentric relativism-"liberalism for the Liberals, cannibalism for the cannibals"?Confronting liberal thought with its own limitations, Steven Lukes' work is more relevant than ever. While recognizing the dangers of moral imperialism, Lukes argues that a relativist position based on identifying clearly distinct cultural and moral communities is incoherent. Drawing on work in anthropology and philosophy, he examines the nature of social justice, the politics of identity and human rights theory.Trade ReviewPraise for Steven Lukes′s The Curious Enlightenment of Professor Caritat: “Written in a beautifully clear style, full of a keen, serious wit … Lukes achieves both lightness and weight in a way many novelists might envy.” —Independent “This book is a box of delights, often wonderfully funny and always deliciously clever, a contemporary political satire to set among the best.” —New Statesman “Knock-out satirical humour.” —Times Literary Supplement “Lukes manages to equal the pace and flair of Candide.”−New York Times Book Review “Utterly magnetic.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Cambridge Scholars Publishing W. K. Clifford and The Ethics of Belief
Book SynopsisW. K. Clifford (1845-1879) was a noted mathematician and popularizer of science in the Victorian era. Although he made major contributions in the field of geometry, he is perhaps best known for a short essay he wrote in 1876, entitled "The Ethics of Belief", in which he argued that "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for any one, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence." Delivered initially as an address to the august Metaphysical Society (whose members included such luminaries as Alfred Lord Tennyson, William Gladstone, T. H. Huxley, and assorted scientists, clerics and philosophers of differing metaphysical views, "The Ethics of Belief" became a rallying cry for freethinkers and a bone of contention for religious apologists. It continues to be discussed today as an exemplar of what is called 'evidentialism', a key point in current philosophy of religion debates over justification of knowledge claims.In this book, Timothy J. Madigan examines the continuing relevance of "The Ethics of Belief" to epistemological and ethical concerns. He places the essay within the historical context, especially the so-called 'Victorian Crisis of Faith' of which Clifford was a key player. Clifford's own life and interests are dealt with as well, along with the responses to his essay by his contemporaries, the most famous of which was William James's "The Will to Believe." Madigan provides an overview of modern-day critics of Cliffordian evidentialism, as well as examining thinkers who were positively influenced by him, including Bertrand Russell, who was perhaps Clifford's most influential successor as an advocate of intellectual honesty.The book ends with a defense of "The Ethics of Belief" from a virtue-theory approach, and argues that Clifford utilizes an "as-if" methodology to encourage intellectual inquiry and communal truth-seeking.' The Ethics of Belief' continues to provoke and stimulate controversy, which was perhaps Clifford's own fondest hope, although he had no right to believe it would do so.Trade Review“This work is extremely well-written, lucid and well-organized. Madigan gets the reader into the subject with an account of Clifford’s life and, equally important, a vivid description of the intellectual climate of the time. Through this, and other means, he conveys the importance of the subject and of Clifford’s contribution. The last two chapters illustrate, convincingly, that the subject is still important and not just of historical interest. The views of contemporary philosophers are discussed and perceptively dealt with.”—Richard Taylor, former Professor of Philosophy at the University of Rochester and author of Good and Evil; Restoring Pride: The Lost Virtue of our Age; and Metaphysics, among many other works.“Madigan’s study of Clifford’s best-known work is unusually well-written, is cogently argued, and raises important issues in a thought-provoking way. He shows a discerning appreciation of scholars who do not agree with him. In short, this is a treat to read and ponder.”—Rollo Handy, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, State University of New York at Buffalo"...in this excellent study Dr Tim Madigan shows why we should take notice of this remarkable man and his 'secular sermon, delivered to exhort individuals to live up to their highest epistemic abilities"Jon Wainwright, Open University in Philosophy Now, Feb 2010."The much-anthologized essay of W. K. Clifford, "The Ethics of Belief" is often read in ignorance of its background, and this study of Madigan is useful for correcting this. It is a useful study...giving a first summary of the issues and the debates associated with it."Patrick Giddy, University of Kwazulu-Natal in Metapsychology Online Reviews, March 2011 Volume 15

St Augustine's Press Natural Law Religion Rights
Book SynopsisThis book discusses some of those ethical and political questions that puzzled several of the great minds of the twentieth century, such as Leo Strauss, Eric Voegelin, Jaques Maritain, and John Finnis: the question of natural law and its relationship to a teaching of individual freedom and rights. The main aim of the book is to enterpret anew the relationship between law and rights in Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, two important founders of modern rights doctrines. But in order to put their teachings into the right perspective, Syse portrays and discusses other models of law and rights, form Aristotle, through Thomas Aquinas, to John Duns Scotus and William of Ockham, with detours to the teachings of Plato, Cicero and Augustine. Throughout the discussion, the role of religion and revelation is given centre stage as a complex, yet fascinating picture of the relationship between natural law, religion, and rights emerges - one which is neither as simple nor as complicated as often imagined. 'Natural Law, Religion, and Rights' should be of interest both to students struggling with the meaning and contents of the natural law tradition, as well as to teachers and researchers working on the many-faceted problems of natural law and natural rights.

Book SynopsisBased on true events, the play follows the stories of Anna, a rape complainant, and Sean, the defendant, with insight and sensitivity. This heart-breaking, multi-layered play jolts the audience into exploring the implications of consent, focussing on the impact of toxic coercive relationships, the power of social media and the need for healthy sexual boundaries, especially when alcohol or drugs blur the lines. The play deliberately takes no specific moral or legal standpoint, forcing you to question long-held beliefs and inherent prejudice. A socially provocative play, which is of particular significance in the light of recent shocking reports about the low incidence of convictions for rape and sexual assault in the UK.Trade Review‘Every teenager and student in the country should see this play. Conferences and public forums should be convened to discuss its ramifications. This is a script to raise whirlwinds.’ – Lloyd Evans, The Spectator; 'There’s a concerted effort, almost as though this production were a dissertation paper, to consider various sides of the same story. Anna McIntyre (Georgina Armfield) goes to the police to report a crime against the person. But the alleged perpetrator, Sean Jackson (Calum Wragg-Smith) did not, on the balance of probabilities, set out to wilfully do anything harmful to another person.' - London Theatre; 'This is not a glamorous West End show. Indeed, it is all the more effective for the Cockpit’s small in- the- round stage, where every change of expression, every twitch of the finger, is noticeable. The play is openly intended to provoke (and there are two post-show Q & A sessions, which promise to be more stimulating than such events usually are). It raises questions: What counts as sexual assault? What are the consequences for the complainant? What are the consequences for the perpetrator? Is it ever enough to say sorry? Because the issues are at the forefront, characters are only sketchily portrayed, with the merest hint of family background. As a result, they are almost universally relatable.' - The Reviews Hub;

Parmenides Publishing Sentience and Sensibility: A Conversation about
Book SynopsisSentience and Sensibility is a dialogue that engages a number of issues in moral theory in a rigorous and original manner, while remaining accessible to students and other nonspecialist readers. It accomplishes this by means of the time-honored (if presently dormant) medium of philosophical dialogue, in which its characters actively challenge each other to clarify their ideas and defend their reasoning. In this manner the conversation develops and weighs some proposed solutions, in largely non-technical language, to a number of current and traditional moral problems (including the nature and origin of moral value, the moral status of nonhuman animals, problems of partiality, and other vexed topics).Moral philosophy and theory can seem as remote and intimidating as everyday ethical matters and moral intuitions are pressing. Sentience and Sensibility proposes that these two should meet. The book’s characters gently challenge each other to clarify their thinking and defend their reasoning, and in this rigorous yet personable manner explore traditional and fresh takes on morality. The conversation aims not only to discover thoughtful answers to such questions, but to do so while being respectful of both philosophical theory and ordinary moral intuitions.David Weissman of CCNY believes this “may be the best use of the very difficult medium of philosophical dialogue” he has read, and that the book “deserves a wide audience.” Kay Mathiesen of the University of Arizona compares the appeal of the book to that of Jostein Gaarder’s bestselling novel about the history of philosophy, with the difference that Sentience and Sensibility develops original ideas in moral thought: “It’s like a Sophie’s World for grownups.”Trade ReviewThis volume is a must for college libraries and an intriguing text for upper-level undergraduate philosophy courses. Silliman has resurrected the old form of philosophical dialogue to write a quirky and accessible book that both describes and moves forward the field of value theory"". - Religious Studies Review

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. Noble Purpose: Joy Of Living A Meaningful Life
Book Synopsis This book describes the personal and spiritual benefits of living life in a way that matters, with an awareness that one's life can reflect a sense of higher purpose no matter what the circumstances. The book draws upon religious, philosophical, and literary writings to show how humans in many cultures and historical epochs have pursued noble purposes by answering God's call as each hears it. Noble purpose can be pursued both in heroic acts and in everyday behavior. The book shows how ordinary people—teachers, business professionals, parents, citizens—can ennoble what they do by being mindful of its deepest meaning. It also points out that humility is a necessary virtue for those who pursue a noble purpose. Great heroes are bold, courageous, and sometimes audacious in their determination to succeed; but they are also humble in their awareness of their own limitations. Moreover, a person must never violate basic moral laws while pursuing a noble purpose—the means must be as moral as the ends. Purpose brings coherence and satisfaction to people's lives, producing joy in good times and resilience in hard times. It also presents a paradox: hard work in service of noble purpose that transcends personal gain is a surer path to happiness than the self-indulgent pursuit of happiness for its own sake. The closer we come to God's purpose for us, the more satisfied our lives become. From the inspiration and examples conveyed in this book, we learn that all individuals have the capacity to discover their own God-given abilities, to learn the world's need for the services they can provide, and to experience joy in serving society and God in their special ways. As theologian Frederick Buechner writes, "The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."

Ave Maria University Press The Teleological Grammar of the Moral Act
Book SynopsisCutting through contemporary confusions with his characteristic rigor and aplomb, Steven A. Long offers the most penetrating study available of St. Thomas Aquinas's doctrine of the intention, choice, object, end, and species of the moral act. Many studies of human action and morality after Descartes and Kant have suffered from a tendency to split body and soul, so that the intention of the human spirit comes to justify whatever the body is made to do. The portrait of human action and morality that arises from such accounts is one of the soul as the pilot and the body as raw material in need of humanization. In this masterful study, Steven Long reconnects the teleology of the soul with the teleology of the body, so that human goal-oriented action rediscovers its lost moral unity, given it by the Creator who has created the human person as a body-soul unity.Trade Review“This is a book of unusual importance. It spells out in Thomistic terms what it is for someone to act and how it is that actions can be evaluated. It is failure at this elementary point that vitiates much contemporary moral discussion. Long supplies exactly what is needed to get things right and to understand why the notion of double effect has been so badly misused. It is very good news that a Second Edition is to be published.” —Alasdair MacIntyre

Apollo Publishers No Nice Girl Swears: Notes on High Society,
Book SynopsisNo Nice Girl Swears is the original, trailblazing guide to the “new etiquette,” brimming with timeless advice on style, romance, and grace, and finally back in print 90 years after its original release. Forewords by today’s editor in chief of Town & Country and the editor in chief of Vogue from 1914–1952.Heralded as the go-to guide for soon-to-be debutantes and ladies who’d recently made their debut, No Nice Girl Swears ushered in a “new etiquette” on its release in 1933, much to the shock—and delight—of the high-society crowd of jazz-age America. Today it is equal parts time capsule (how to dress for dinner on your transatlantic voyage) and timeless missive (how to ditch a date who’s had a few too many).Worldly-wise socialite Alice-Leone Moats advises on everything from style and dating to travel and party throwing, and weeds through the dos and don’ts of weddings, weekend trips, and the workplace. Her wisdom, though steeped in the charm of her time, endures: treat others—and yourself—with respect, always put your best foot forward, and don’t throw a party without champagne. It’s just good manners.This keepsake volume includes a new foreword from Stellene Volandes, the editor in chief of Town & Country, the original foreword from Edna Woolman Chase, Vogue’s editor in chief from 1914–1952, and a contextualizing preface. It encourages consideration of what etiquette rules we’d like instilled today, and shows how Moats helped usher in a world where women could speak—and act—freely.Trade Review"A book of modern etiquette for the modern debutante and sub deb, with an eye on her mother. Definitely keyed to the city and suburban communities, rather than the small town. Humor and commonsense combined in due proportion in answering such questions as: Shall I ask him in? May I call you up some time? What is the technique of being picked up? What should be done if my escort passes out on me? And so on. In addition, the author gives the latest usage in the matter of debutante parties, chaperonage (you'd be surprised!), engagements, weddings, clothes, week-end parties, and other contingencies. In good taste, and yet distinctly smart. The book itself is another experiment in colored stock—yellow this time—but since the books are to be sealed with cellophane wrappers, the prospective buyer wont know what she is getting until the purchase is made."—Kirkus Review“In spite of such reminiscent titles of 'Shall She Ask Him In?' and 'Never Speak To Strangers Unless They Speak to You,' these chapters contain serious advice—the pragmatism of it all cloaked in a flippant and humor-flecked style.”—New York TimesTable of ContentsI: No Nice Girl Swears II: Should She Ask Him In?III: You're the First Man I've Ever KissedIV: Keeping an Amateur StandingV: This Casual EraVI: May I Call You Up Sometime?
