  • Taylor & Francis Ltd The Moral Status of Combatants

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book develops a new contractualist foundation for just war theory, which defends the traditional view of the moral equality of combatants and associated egalitarian moral norms.Traditionally it has been viewed that combatants on both sides of a war have the same right to fight, irrespective of the justice of their cause, and both sides must observe the same restrictions on the use of force, especially prohibitions on targeting noncombatants. Revisionist philosophers have argued that combatants on the unjust side of a war have no right to fight, that pro-war civilians on the unjust side might be targetable, and that lawful combatants on the unjust side might in principle be liable to prosecution for their participation on the unjust side. This book seeks to undercut the revisionist project and defend the traditional view of the moral equality of combatants. It does so by showing how revisionist philosophers fail to build a strong foundation for their arguments and Table of ContentsPart I: Revisionist Just War Theory 1. • Taylor & Francis Ltd State Secrecy and Democracy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the wake of controversial disclosures of classified government information by WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden, questions about the democratic status of secret uses of political power are rarely far from the headlines. Despite an increase in initiatives aimed at enhancing government transparency such as freedom of information or sunshine laws secrecy persists in both the foreign and domestic policy of democratic states, in the form of classified intelligence programs, espionage, secret military operations, diplomatic discretion, closed-door political bargaining, and bureaucratic opacity. This book explores whether the state's claim to restrict access to information can be justified. Dorota Mokrosinska answers this question with a qualified yes, arguing that secrecy in exercising executive and legislative power can be seen as a legitimate exercise of democratic authority rather than as its justified suspension.Past and recent examples of state secrecy are used throughouTable of Contents1. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Procedural Justice and Relational Theory

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book bridges a scholarly divide between empirical and normative theorizing about procedural justice in the context of relations of power between citizens and the state. Empirical research establishes that people's understanding of procedural justice is shaped by relational factors. A central premise of this volume is that this research is significant but needs to be complemented by normative theorizing that draws on relational theories of ethics and justice to explain the moral significance of procedures and make normative sense of people's concerns about relational factors. The chapters in Part 1 provide comprehensive reviews of empirical studies of procedural justice in policing, courts and prisons. Part 2 explores empirical and normative perspectives on procedural justice and legitimacy. Part 3 examines philosophical approaches to procedural justice. Part 4 considers the implications of a relational perspective for the design of procedures in a range of legal cTable of ContentsIntroduction: procedural justice in law, psychology, and philosophyPart I Procedural justice in policing, courts and prisons: empirical reviews1. • Taylor & Francis Digital Knowledge

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisInformation we use to structure our lives is increasingly stored digitally, rather than in biomemory. (Just think: if your online calendar went down, would you know where you are supposed to be and at what time next week?) Likewise, with breakthroughs such as those from Google DeepMind and OpenAI, discoveries at the frontiers of knowledge are increasingly due to machine learning (often, applied to massive datasets, extracted from a fast-growing datasphere) rather than to brainbound cognition. Itâs hard to deny that knowledge retention and production are becoming increasingly â in various ways â digitised.Digital Knowledge: A Philosophical Investigation is the first book to squarely and rigorously investigate digital knowledge: what it is, how to make sense of it in connection with received theories of knowledge, and where it is going. Key questions J. Adam Carter examines along the way are the following: How is mere digital information conveTable of ContentsPreface 1. Digital Epistemology: A Research Programme Motivated 2. • Taylor & Francis Heidegger on Technology

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis collection offers the first comprehensive and definitive account of Martin Heideggerâs philosophy of technology. It does so through a detailed analysis of canonical texts and recently published primary sources on two crucial concepts in Heideggerâs later thought: Gelassenheit and Gestell. Gelassenheit, translated as âreleasementâ, and Gestell, often translated as âenframingâ, stand as opposing ideas in Heideggerâs work whereby the meditative thinking of Gelassenheit counters the dangers of our technological framing of the world in Gestell. After opening with a scholarly overview of Heideggerâs philosophy of technology as a whole, this volume focuses on important Heideggerian critiques of science, technology, and modern industrialized society as well as Heideggerâs belief that transformations in our thought processes enable us to resist the restrictive domain of modern techno-scientific practice. Key themes discussed in this collection include: the history, development, and defining features of modern technology; the relationship between scientific theories and their technological instantiations; the nature of human agency and the essence of education in the age of technology; and the ethical, political, and environmental impact of our current techno-scientific customs. This volume also addresses the connection between Heideggerâs critique of technology and his involvement with the Nazis. Finally, and with contributions from a number of renowned Heidegger scholars, the original essays in this collection will be of great interest to students of Philosophy, Technology Studies, the History of Science, Critical Theory, Environmental Studies, Education, Sociology, and Political Theory.Trade Review"This volume is a valuable resource that I highly recommend for those wanting to learn more about, and engage critically with, Heidegger's philosophy of technology." – David R. Cerbone in Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews"This collection is extremely rich and serves as an superb guide to Heidegger’s writings on technology. The parallels it draws between Heidegger and other thinkers are illuminating, and scholarly innovation is achieved through the diverse approaches taken by the contributors. Briefly, this book is a must-have for those seeking to study Heidegger’s philosophy of technology." – Anne Boily in Canadian Philosophical Review"Heidegger on Technology provides a tightly focussed array of Heidegger scholarship by many eminent figures in the field. As its title suggests, its concern is to provide a systematic and multifaceted critical evaluation of the ways in which Heidegger thinks about technology in his later writings" – Stephen Mulhall in the European Journal of Philosophy"Heidegger on Technology contains instructive contributions that provide its readers with plenty of insights concerning Heidegger’s development of thought, whether it be its breaks or its continuities. Like any other companion it offers useful hints, much needed clarifications, even congenial interpretations" – Florian Arnold in Phenomenological Reviews"Bringing together an array of Heideggerian scholars and incorporating the latest translated materials, this collection provides a fascinating account of Heidegger’s famous and influential analysis of technology." – Gavin Rae, Charles III University of Madrid, Spain"Heidegger on Technology provides an abundance of insight into Heidegger's ideas and how these ideas are expresses and experienced in the contemporary world." -Glen Miller and Christopher Black in SophiaTable of ContentsIntroduction: Heidegger’s Thinking Through TechnologyChristopher Merwin, Aaron James Wendland, and Christos Hadjioannou1.
