Book SynopsisEducational philosophies of self-cultivation as the cultural foundation and philosophical ethos for education have strong and historically effective traditions stretching back to antiquity in the classical ‘cradle’ civilizations of China and East Asia, India and Pakistan, Greece and Anatolia, focused on the cultural traditions in Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism in the East and Hellenistic philosophy in the West. This volume in East-West dialogues in philosophy of education examines both Confucian and Western classical traditions revealing that although each provides its own distinct figure of the virtuous person, they are remarkably similar in their conception and emphasis on moral self-cultivation as a practical answer to how humans become virtuous. The collection also examines self-cultivation in Japanese traditions and also the nature of Michel Foucault’s work in relation to ethical and aesthetic ideals of Hellenistic self-cultivation.Trade Review“The book is a praiseworthy work. … the book contains numerous quality chapters that are highly recommended for students of Chinese religious philosophies in particular. A more rigorous editing will, nonetheless, be necessary in future volumes: all the more so because the series holds great promise for breaking new ground in mediating among different religious and philosophical traditions.” (Lehel Balogh, Religious Studies Review, Vol. 48 (1), March, 2022)Table of ContentsVirtue Ethics.- Self-Cultivation.- The Claims of Moral Education.

  • Practical Wisdom for an Ethical Evaluation

Information Age Publishing Practical Wisdom for an Ethical Evaluation

Book SynopsisThis book provides a contemporary and thought-provoking exploration of the concept of practical wisdom--what it is and how it can be incorporated into evaluation practice. It defines what practical wisdom is, explores its roots, where it stands today, what constitutes the ""wise"" evaluator, and how we can develop sound judgment in an unpredictable and chaotic time. It brings together evaluation thought leaders and practitioners to examine the concept of practical wisdom. The authors' enlightening essays are interwoven with reflective strands comprised of commentaries, examples, and new ideas added by Hurteau and her colleagues that offer a recursive and intricate pattern of reflection on the topic of practical wisdom. This is a rare book because it moves beyond evaluation methodology to explore how practical wisdom can help us develop new and better solutions for difficult evaluation situations. It will become a standard reference for practitioners, trainers. and teachers of evaluation because it considers the history, ethics, and competencies that underpin practical wisdom, and examines the ways that this untaught skill can be applied, to do, as House says, "the right thing in the special circumstances of performing the job.

  • Oxford University Press Inc Ethical Issues in Professional Life

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is an anthology of readings intended for use as a primary text in first-degree courses in professional ethics. Increasingly, universities are offering such general courses as an alternative to the proliferation of specialized courses in the ethics of particular professions, for example engineering, business, and law. As yet, however, no satisfactory text has appeared. This book is organized around issues; it raises a particular ethical question and examines it in the context of different professions. It includes essays both by philosophers and people working in the professions. The editor has supplied a wide variety of pedagogic aids, including introductions to and study of discussion questions for each set of readings, cases for discussion, and an appendix on preparing cases for class discussion and preparing position papers.Trade Review"Well organized...Will be useful to introductory courses in professional ethics and makes an important contribution to pedagogy."--Bruce D. Weinstein, West Virginia University School of Medicine "This helpful general text and excellent teaching tool in professional ethics includes a concise and clear introduction to ethical theory, essays on the nature of professions, role morality, models for professional-client interaction, and discussion of deception, informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, responsibility, dissent, justice, character, and professional codes....Many essays included are classics (e.g., Sissela Bok on lying, Everett Hughes on the professions), and controversies with opposing viewpoints are noted."--Ethics "The book's overall organization, chapter introductions, and discussion questions enable readers to see connecting themes and to recognize that life in any profession involves grappling with many difficult ethical questions. It's a very sophisticated and uplifting book."--Engineering Times "Welcome and original....A much needed anthology for a generic professional ethics undergraduate course."--Teaching Philosophy "A valuable reference and could serve as an anthology in professional ethics courses that aim to alert students to the continuities that exist between the ethical issues in their field and others. Well organized, well edited, and comprehensive."--Religious Studies Review "The best general text in propositional ethics I've come across. The overall structure of the anthology is very well conceived, the editorial summaries and intros are insightful, [and] the selections are theoretically challenging."--R. B. Louden, University of Southern Maine "I will use this in numerous courses on applied ethics--an excellent new classic. Applicable to both engineering and medical ethics."--Sara Merrill, Kansas State University "A very helpful text....A fine discussion of foundational issues in ethics; good selection of articles, excellent range of issue areas in a variety of professions; inclusion of topical bibliographies; and the use of case studies. [A] versatile text that can be used in a variety of courses."--Ronald P. Hamel, College of St. Thomas "The idea of presenting ethics as an interdisciplinary concept is very effective and the chapters are well illustrated with examples so as to 'make sense' to students."--William D. Hyatt, Western Carolina University "A valuable reference (cases, professional codes of ethics, bibliography) and could serve as an anthology in professional ethics courses that aim to alert students to the continuities that exist between the ethical issues in their field and others. Well organized, well edited, and comprehensive."--Religious Studies Review "A good reference text for ADN level. Will use....Good material for Nursing Continued Education Programs."--Martha Hill, Elizabeth Community College "A fine collection of material....Good balance of positions and topics."--Glenn C. Graber, University of Tennessee "Just the sort of book I have been looking for for years."--Richard Lee, University of Arkansas "Provides a stimulating exploration of a variety of ethical issues which cut across several professions."--William L. Richter, Kansas State University "In-depth coverage incorporating wide variety of authors and viewpoints."--Barb Braband, Allen School of Nursing, University of Iowa "Broad perspective. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn contemporary philosophy, substantive moral theories are typically classified as either consequentialist or deontological. Standard consequentialist theories insist, roughly, that agents must always act so as to produce the best available outcomes overall. Standard deontological theories, by contrast, maintain that there are some circumstances where one is permitted but not required to produce the best overall results, and still other circumstances in which one is positively forbidden to do so.Classical utilitarianism is the most familiar consequentialist view, but it is widely regarded as an inadequate account of morality. Although Professor Scheffler agrees with this assessment, he also believes that consequentialism seems initially plausible, and that there is a persistent air of paradox surrounding typical deontological views. In this book, therefore, he undertakes to reconsider the rejection of consequentialism. He argues that it is possible to provide a rationale for the view thTrade ReviewFrom the reviews of the first edition:an intelligent, substantive, and challenging book ... Book SynopsisDisagreement is common: even informed, intelligent, and generally reasonable people often come to different conclusions when confronted with what seems to be the same evidence. Can the competing conclusions be reasonable? If not, what can we reasonably think about the situation? This volume examines the epistemology of disagreement. Philosophical questions about disagreement arise in various areas, notably politics, ethics, aesthetics, and the philosophy of religion: but this will be the first book focusing on the general epistemic issues arising from informed disagreement. Ten leading philosophers offer specially written essays which together will offer a starting-point for future work on this topic.Trade ReviewDisagreement is set to be a key reference for all those deeply interested in this gripping topic. * Amir Dastmalchian, Religious Studies *All of the essays in this volume repay careful study. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThomas Hill, a leading figure in the recent development of Kantian moral philosophy, presents a series of essays that interpret and develop Kant''s ideas on ethics. The first part of the book focuses on basic concepts: a priori method, a good will, categorical imperatives, autonomy, and constructivist strategies of argument. Hill goes on to consider aspects of human welfare, and then moral worth--the nature and grounds of moral assessment of persons as deserving esteem or blame. He offers illuminating discussions of happiness, beneficence, personal values, conscience, moral desert, moral dilemmas, and feelings of regret. He is critical of Kant at many points, but he shows how many familiar objections miss the mark. Two previously unpublished essays challenge the views of other influential Kant scholars and defend alternative interpretations of Kant on beneficence, supererogation, and what it means to ''set oneself an end''. These clear and careful writings show moral, poltical, and socTrade ReviewThis collection brings together work of the calibre that has made Thomas E. Hill, Jr., a leader in the interpretation and development of Kant's ethics. Hill exhibits a rare combination of sensitivity to complex moral issues, insight into Kant's texts, and analytical incisivenss. In clear, jargon-free prose, these essays expertly draw the reader into the core of Kantian moral philosophy. * Ethics *Human Welfare and Moral Worth gives us plenty to think about ... the volume has the great virtue of defending positions that are subtle and reasonable as well as innovative and engaging. * Ethics *... splendidly produced volume. Thomas Hill has developed a distinctive line of Kant exposition and analysis which will repay close reading and careful consideration. Hill is an attentive and sensitive interpreter of Kant who takes Kant's major ethical writings as a starting point rather than an end point of argument. Hill is concerned to establish how Kant's practical philosophy engages with our lives and society and in an instructive and stimulating way. Hill is scholarly without being unduly scholastic. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisIt is often said that one person or society is ''freer'' than another, or that people have a right to equal freedom, or that freedom should be increased or even maximized. Such quantitative claims about freedom are of great importance to us, forming an essential part of our political discourse and theorizing. Yet their meaning has been surprisingly neglected by political philosophers until now.Ian Carter provides the first systematic account of the nature and importance of our judgements about degrees of freedom. He begins with an analysis of the normative assumptions behind the claim that individuals are entitled to a measure of freedom, and then goes on to ask whether it is indeed conceptually possible to measure freedom.Adopting a coherentist approach, the author argues for a conception of freedom that not only reflects commonly held intuitions about who is freer than whom but is also compatible with a liberal or freedom-based theory of justice.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition excellent book ... incisive ... does a great deal to revitalize a traditional and intuitively appealing strand of liberal thought... • Oxford University Press Beyond Consequentialism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisConsequentialism, the theory that morality requires us to promote the best overall outcome, is the default alternative in contemporary moral philosophy, and is highly influential in public discourses beyond academic philosophy. Paul Hurley argues that current discussions of the challenge consequentialism tend to overlook a fundamental challenge to consequentialism. The standard consequentialist account of the content of morality, he argues, cannot be reconciled to the authoritativeness of moral standards for rational agents. If rational agents typically have decisive reasons to do what morality requires, then consequentialism cannot be the correct account of moral standards. Hurley builds upon this challenge to argue that the consequentialist case for grounding the impartial evaluation of actions in the impartial evaluation of outcomes is built upon a set of subtle and mutually reinforcing mistakes. Through exposing these mistakes and misappropriations, he undermines consequentialist arguments against alternative approaches that recognize a conception of impartiality appropriate to the evaluation of actions which is distinct from the impartiality appropriate to the evaluation of outcomes. A moral theory that recognizes a fundamental role for such a distinct conception of impartiality can account for the rational authority of moral standards, but does so, Hurley argues, by taking morality beyond consequentialism in both its standard and non-standard forms.Trade ReviewThere have been a number of excellent books published in moral philosophy in recent years, but even when measured against this impressive comparison-class Hurleys book represents an outstanding achievement. * Alan Thomas, The Philosophical Quarterly *Hurley's book is thoroughly and densely argued and presents a number of powerful objections to consequentialism. ... an important book which contains many innovating arguments. It deserves serious attention from defenders of consequentialism. * Andrews Reath, Journal of Utilitas *insightful . . . Beyond Consequentialism is a model of rigorous and creative argument. Though the idea that we need to look to an interpersonal conception of impartiality to find an intuitively plausible alternative to consequentialism has been in the air for a while now, Hurley has done an exemplary job of making clear, in a way it had not previously been, the considerable promise of developing an interpersonal understanding of impartiality as what is needed if the lingering appeal of consequentialism is to be exorcised once and for all. * Rahul Kumar, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews *This really is an impressive book. It provides the most rigorous argument that I have seen so far for the attractive and increasingly popular suggestion that, by developing the idea of an interpersonal point of view, we get better accounts of both the content and the authority of morality than anything the consequentialists can offer. * Robert H. • Clarendon Press The Ethics of Philodemus

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisVoula Tsouna presents a comprehensive study of the ethics of the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus, who taught Virgil, influenced Horace, and was praised by Cicero. His works have only recently become available to modern readers, through the decipherment of a papyrus carbonized by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Tsouna examines Philodemus'' theoretical principles in ethics, his contributions to moral psychology, his method, his conception of therapy, and his therapeutic techniques. Part I begins with an outline of the fundamental principles of Philodemus'' ethics in connection with the canonical views of the Epicurean school, and highlights his own original contributions. In addition to examining central features of Philodemus'' hedonism, Tsouna analyses central concepts in his moral psychology, notably: his conception of vices, which she compares with that of the virtues; his account of harmful or unacceptable emotions or passions; and his theory of corresponding acceptable emotionsTrade ReviewReview from previous edition A fine book on important and challenging texts.
