  • The Bell Tolls for No One

City Lights Books The Bell Tolls for No One

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPreviously uncollected pulp fiction by the 20th century American master.Trade Review"The brevity of the pieces collected here, some no more than two or three pages, suit Bukowski well. ... Best to think of his work as a series of dirty Road Runner cartoons in which Bukowski is the coyote taking one damn kick in the pants--front- and backside--after another. At its worst (the hijack fantasy "Fly the Friendly Skies"), Bukowski's sensibility is ugly and coarse. But when he is swinging, there is a companionable ease to his blunt, profane vernacular. Bukowski's gift was a sense for the raunchy absurdity of life, his writing a grumble that might turn into a belly laugh or a racking cough but that always throbbed with vital energy."--Kirkus Reviews "Bukowski's world is hostile, full of runaway dysfunction, and populated by alcoholics, gamblers, adulterers, and abusers, all with few, if any, redeeming qualities ... It is Bukowski's embrace of this world, his insistence on its validity if not its value, that makes him unique ... Bukowski can be honest and direct, and he is capable of embedding meaningful observations in the most sordid of stories."--Publishers Weekly Bukowski's The Bell Tolls for No One, recently released in a comic-book-like paperback, follows the hardboiled genre bent that reached its surreal apotheosis in his final novel, Pulp. The obvious influence is to Hemingway--see: the title--but perhaps more interestingly, the editor David Stephen Calonne notes Bukowski's debt to the crime writer James M. Cain, who had also, unbeknownst to me, shaped the style of Camus's The Stranger. The book includes some of Bukowski's roughly drawn illustrations, which fall somewhere close to pornographic Ziggy or adult-themed New Yorker cartoons. One features an asthmatic customer at an adult bookstore asking the cashier to inflate his blow-up doll for him; another shows an expressionistically drawn party girl surrounded by gawking men with the caption 'God, a woman could get bored.' The subject matter is a more amplified version of the usual Bukowski fare--stalwart, sleazebag protagonists; spectral, deathly women with emphatically described upper legs. As always, the most one can hope for in Bukowski's universe is 'a grim yet comfortable isolation.'"--Casey Henry, The Paris Review "Like Robert Crumb, whose art appears on the cover of The Bell Tolls For No One, Charles Bukowski represents a kind of brazenly counterculture spirit that holds in contempt anything that represents the Establishment. Read in this light, this newest compilation can be viewed as more than the self-admitted 'notes of a dirty old man,' but as the further works of an iconoclast who, much like the underground comics artists and punk rock bands of the late '70s, waged war against all that was supposedly 'decent' and conventional for the sake of getting at the grit of human experience."-ZYZZYVA These are tales from the lower class and underclass, in all their glorious craziness and absurdity. It's not pretty, and yet, somehow, there is joy in reading these stories, and somehow too, Bukowski ends up being a good buddhist, finding the larger beauty in these dismal lives ... [For those] who already love Buk, this book will leave content, drunk, smiles on our faces."--Entropy Magazine

Book SynopsisShocking, banned and the subject of obscenity trials, Henry Miller''s first novel Tropic of Cancer is one of the most scandalous and influential books of the twentieth century -- new to Penguin Modern Classics with a cover by Tracey EminTropic of Cancer redefined the novel. Set in Paris in the 1930s, it features a starving American writer who lives a bohemian life among prostitutes, pimps, and artists. Banned in the US and the UK for more than thirty years because it was considered pornographic, Tropic of Cancer continued to be distributed in France and smuggled into other countries. When it was first published in the US in 1961, it led to more than 60 obscenity trials until a historic ruling by the Supreme Court defined it as a work of literature. Long hailed as a truly liberating book, daring and uncompromising, Tropic of Cancer is a cornerstone of modern literature that asks us to reconsider everything we know about art, freedom, and morality.''At last an unprintable book that is fit to read'' Ezra Pound ''A momentous event in the history of modern writing'' Samuel Beckett ''The book that forever changed the way American literature would be written'' Erica JongTrade ReviewAt last an unprintable book that is fit to read -- Ezra PoundA momentous event in the history of modern writing -- Samuel BeckettOne of the ten or twenty great novels of our century, a revolution in consciousness equal to The Sun Also Rises -- Norman MailerRead him for five pages, ten pages, and you feel the peculiar relief that comes not so much from understanding as from being understood. A mixture of fiction and autobiography, it is the story of Henry V. Miller who works for the Cosmodemonic telegraph company in New York in the 1920s and tries to write the most important work of literature that was ever published. Tropic of Capricorn paints a dazzling picture of the life of the writer and of New York City between the wars: the skyscrapers and the sewers, the lust and the dejection, the smells and the sounds of a city that is perpetually in motion, threatening to swallow everyone and everything.''Literature begins and ends with the meaning of what Miller has done'' Lawrence Durrell ''The only imaginative prose-writer oTrade ReviewAmerican Literature begins and ends with the meaning of what Miller has done -- Lawrence DurrellThe only imaginative prose-writer of the slightest value who has appeared among the English-speaking races for some years past -- George OrwellThe greatest American writer -- Bob DylanThere is nothing like Henry Miller when he gets rolling... Book SynopsisA masterpiece of transgressive, surrealist erotica, George Bataille''s Story of the Eye was the Fifty Shades of Grey of its era. This Penguin Modern Classics edition is translated by Joachim Neugroschal, and published with essays by Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes.Bataille''s first novel, published under the pseudonym ''Lord Auch'', is still his most notorious work. In this explicit pornographic fantasy, the young male narrator and his lovers Simone and Marcelle embark on a sexual quest involving sadism, torture, orgies, madness and defilement, culminating in a final act of transgression. Shocking and sacrilegious, Story of the Eye is the fullest expression of Bataille''s obsession with the closeness of sex, violence and death. Yet it is also hallucinogenic in its power, and is one of the erotic classics of the twentieth century. This edition also includes Susan Sontag''s superb study of pornography as art, ''The Pornographic Imagination'', as wel

Book SynopsisWith her jaunty dissection of the sex life and the private grooming habits of the novel's 18-year-old narrator, Helen Memel, Charlotte Roche has turned the previously unspeakable into the national conversation in Germany.Trade Review‘Profoundly unsettling’ Rowan Pelling, Daily Mail ‘If you ever wondered what you'd be like if you weren't shy, polite, tolerant, modest, sexually repressed, logical and constrained by modern standards of hygiene, this may be the book for you…This is not a beautiful or perfect book, but an enterprising one, and its cumulative effect is admirable…Our bodies mean a lot to us – even the asshole, about which far too little has been written. Every writer needs to claim a bit of territory, and assholes are there for the grabbing. Boldly, Roche takes them for her own’ Guardian ‘“Wetlands”, in the tradition of Plath's “The Bell Jar”, is a remarkable novel about mental illness that has been mistaken for feminist literature’ Alice O’Keefe, New Statesman ‘The cause of the fuss is the novel's extreme obscenity – though “obscenity” doesn't quite catch the particular, pungent flavour of the thing. “Grunginess” is nearer the mark’ Adam Lively, Sunday Times ‘Literary news this week suggests that when it comes to women writing about sex, reviewers are still reacting in the same way as Dr Johnson to his walking dog, surprised that it’s being done at all. So hats off to Charlotte Roche, who has managed to give both the “Sunday Times” and the “Guardian” the willies by cheerfully confessing to consuming pornography with her husband and starting her book “Wetlands” with a graphic discussion of hemorrhoids’ Lisa Hilton, Spectator ‘Maeve Binchy is famous for her unique humour and insight; Cecelia Ahern is popular for her unlikely twists and touches of magic; Charlotte Roche has a different formula for success – haemorrhoids, hairy armpits and halitosis, mixed together into an unlikely erotic pot-pourri’ Irish Independent

Book SynopsisA Night in a Moorish Harem (1896) is a Victorian erotic novella. Published under the pseudonym “Lord George Herbert,” the novella has proved both popular and controversial as the subject of several obscenity trials. Noted for its orientalist tropes, the novella remains relevant to scholars of postcolonial literature and Victorian culture. “My first duty was to kiss the fair hands which had aided me, and then I explained the accident which had brought me among them and the plan I had formed for escape before dawn. I then gave my name and rank. While doing this I had an opportunity to observe the ladies; there were nine of them and any one of them would have been remarked for her beauty. Each one of them differed from all the others in the style of her charms: some were large and some were small; some were slender and some plump, some blonde and some brunette, but all were bewitchingly beautiful.” Tired of life onboard, a young midshipman decides to spend his afternoon off in a small boat attached to the side of the naval vessel he serves. Comforted by the gentle waves and hot Mediterranean sun, he falls into a deep sleep. When he wakes, he finds himself drifting close to the Moroccan shore and is unable to spot his ship along the haze-strewn horizon. As he prepares himself to be sold into slavery—or worse—he spots a group of beautiful women watching him from the rocks. Helped ashore, the midshipman is brought to the safety of their harem, where he spends one night of ecstasy exploring their nimble bodies and learning the stories of their lives. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of A Night in a Moorish Harem is a classic work of Victorian erotica reimagined for modern readers.

Book SynopsisAn ode to mad love, awarded the Prix de Flore in 1999.Published in 1999 and awarded that year’s Prix de Flore, Nicolas Pages marks a departure from the Sadean preoccupations of Guillaume Dustan’s first three novels; it is, in essence, a love story. Inspired by a failed romance with the Swiss artist-writer Nicolas Pages and collaging texts that Dustan initially produced for a wide variety of other occasions (magazine articles, short stories, project notes, shopping lists, and more), the “auto-/bio-/porno-graphic” prose of Nicolas Pages is by turns trashy and encyclopedic, corporeal and philosophical. Here Dustan inaugurates a “gay literature” that is no longer painful or shameful, but epicurean and cheerful without ever lapsing into idealism. A vibrant plea for gay rights and a tapestried text that is more than the sum of its many styles, Nicolas Pages is a call to explore the body, sexuality, and writing in all their variety; it is a hymn to life, humanity, pleasure, and desire.

Book SynopsisThe Romance of Lust (1873-1876) is an anonymously written pornographic novel. Published by infamous London pornographer William Lazenby, The Romance of Lust appeared in four volumes and immediately drew condemnation from the British authorities. Although its author remains unknown, scholars believe either William Simpson Potter or Edward Sellon wrote the text. Frequently censored, The Romance of Lust influenced countless authors of erotica from the Victorian era onward. Charlie Roberts has always felt different. Born with an abnormally large penis, he finds himself tempted into sexual experience at a young age. Soon, he develops an uncontrollable desire for the human body, and begins to have sex with everyone from his governesses to his own sisters Eliza and Mary. As he gets older, a whole new world of lust becomes available, and Charlie begins to feel attracted to men. Filled with detailed scenes of erotic acts, including orgies, fellatio, cunnilingus, masturbation, anal sex, and double penetration, The Romance of Lust raised more than just eyebrows when it first appeared in print. Condemned for obscenity and often censored by authorities, the novel is recognized today as an important work of Victorian erotica and has inspired generations of pornographers around the world. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Romance of Lust is a classic of pornographic literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book SynopsisThe Autobiography of a Flea (1887) is an anonymously written pornographic novel. Published by infamous London pornographer Edward Avery, The Autobiography of a Flea was adapted into a 1976 film starring John Holmes. Bella is an orphan girl who lives with her uncle and aunt. Naïve and curious, she encounters a handsome man while leaving church one day. Introducing himself as Charlie, he hands her a note and heads on his way. Nervous at first, Bella reads the note and finds herself compelled by its mystery—Charlie requests to meet her at night in the local gardens. That night, she has her first sexual experience, only to be interrupted by Father Ambrose, who was watching the pair from the shadows. Using his authority, he instructs Bella to meet him the following afternoon in the sacristy, where he informs her that unless she agrees to be seduced by him and his fellow men of the cloth, he will reveal the secret of her tryst with Charlie. The Autobiography of a Flea is a controversial story that meets time-honored taboos head on, depicting religious corruption, incest, and an orgy involving nineteen lustful priests. Narrated throughout by a lowly parasite, the story provides a flea’s-eye-view on the hidden nature of human society. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Autobiography of a Flea is a classic of erotic literature reimagined for modern readers.
