Erotic art / Erotica in the arts Books
Edition Skylight Erotic Sessions
Book SynopsisThe son of artist parents, Dahmane was born in Paris on 21 April 1959. His father was a painter and engraver, and his mother a poet and painter. Dahmane became familiar with photography at an early age, being first introduced to it by his grandmother and a photographer friend of his parents. At 15 he began to develop a consuming interest in nude photography, gathering his first experience with two classmates from secondary school, who modelled for him. His predilection for black and white photography has continued into the Millennium; the medium allows him to refine and develop his technique as part of an on-going process. He quickly learned that Leica lenses give you the best results, and for this reason, prefers Leica SLRs and enlargers. Dahmane published his first work before he was 20, including an extensive reportage on the suffering of animals in zoos. At the same time, he worked as a freelance portrait photographer for a range of French magazines, including LExpansion, Capital, LExpress, Le Figaro, VSD, Closer, LUsine Nouvelle and others. Several volumes of his nudes have been released, including Dahmane (bags), Dressed Nudes (Futami-Shobo), Dressed Nudes (Edition Skylight and La Musardine), Erotic Sessions (Edition Skylight and La Musardine) and Addicted to Nudes (Edition Skylight and La Musardine). His nude works have been published all over the world and exhibited in London, Paris, Rome and Los Angeles, among other places. Dahmane still lives in Paris, and continues to devote himself to photographing female nudes and doing portraits. He is represented by the Claude Lemand Gallery.

Oxford University Press Inc Core Connections
Book SynopsisCore Connections: Cairo Belly Dance in the Revolution''s Aftermath explores the intricate networks of belly dance in Cairo, Egypt following the turbulent aftermath of the January 25, 2011 revolution. This comprehensive ethnography takes readers on a captivating journey through the city''s diverse dance landscapes spanning from Nile cruising tourist boats and decadent five-star hotels to smoky late-night discos and Pyramid Street cabarets. While mapping the multiple maneuverings of Cairene dancers and viewers alike, author Christine Sahin centralizes the dancers'' embodied political insight while fleshing out nuanced portraits of their lives and stories amidst ongoing political precarity. Bridging the realms of Dance and Middle Eastern Gender Studies, this groundbreaking book not only analyses but embodies ethnography. This book''s ethnographic approach mirrors the core of Cairo belly dance itself via attending to dual meanings of moving; centralizing mobility and movement as sites of

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Posing Sex
Book SynopsisPosing Sex: Toward a Perceptual Ethics for Literary and Visual Art views the long and provocative tradition of representing the sexual act in Western art as an occasion for challenging assumptions about personhood. It is uncontroversial that what Singer dubs the sex image, the artist's posing of human figures in the act of coitus, is an enduring compositional armature for artists from antiquity to the present. Singer, however, makes the quite controversial claim that this aesthetic practice, in literature and painting especially, serves as a powerful métier for exploring how the mind is continuous with the sensuously lively body rather than its rationalistic antagonist. Singer draws upon a rich philosophical traditionfrom the Greek Stoics, Descartes, Spinoza, and Hegel to contemporary theorists of perception and aesthetic agencyto show how the stakes of aesthetic experience epitomized in the sex image are essentially ethical. Referencing a broad range of image-based arTrade ReviewThis risk-taking, fearless book is a continually rewarding act of looking and feeling and thinking, insisting on their intimacy but also enacting it on the page, where Singer's intellectual reach and analytical rigor produce an abundance of arresting perceptions of sensuous aesthetic experience. * Ross Posnock, Anna Garbedian Professor of the Humanities, Columbia University, USA *Drawing elegantly on Hegel and Spinoza, as well as contemporaries like John McDowell, Alan Singer regards aesthetic depictions of sex not merely as lewd images, or objects for the male gaze, but as a matrix through which personhood is made intelligible. Posing Sex invites us to see in such images how conceptual capacities are at work in the deliverances of our senses, and how knowledge of self and others can be achieved where we least expect it. * Paul A. Kottman, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature, The New School for Social Research, USA, and author of Love as Human Freedom (2017) *[R]emarkably sensitive and intricate in surveying how aesthetic moments may connect to more comprehensive aspects of life by virtue of the kinds of ‘mindfulness’ they pursue … Singer deploys a unique mode of argument that we might best characterize as philosophical bricolage. * Charles Altieri, University of California, Berkeley, JML Blog Review Roundtable, JML Blog Review Roundtable *A leading virtue of Alan Singer's Posing Sex is its commitment to a theorization of literary and visual art that might please even the opponents of aesthetics. Those partisans will find no shrinking from action here … One value of Singer's literary-critical iconoclasm lies in his ability to bring into the domain of mindedness and action texts that range from Lady Chatterley's Lover to Henry Miller's Sexus to Lolita; and to do the same for erotically-charged visual art by Balthus or Bacon or John Currin, and for the film art of Lars Von Trier. * Robert L. Caserio, The Pennsylvania State University, JML co-editor, JML Blog Review Roundtable *I urge [readers] to ‘taste and see’ for themselves, and in the reading of the entire book … they will experience the surprises of informed and just critical judgments and the shocks of new aesthetic experiences. * Daniel T. Manchester University Press Dirty Books: Erotic Fiction and the Avant-Garde
Book SynopsisFrom the 1930s to the 1970s, in New York and in Paris, daring publishers and writers were producing banned pornographic literature. The books were written by young, impecunious writers, poets, and artists, many anonymously. Most of these pornographers wrote to survive, but some also relished the freedom to experiment that anonymity provided - men writing as women, and women writing as men - and some (Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller) went on to become influential figures in modernist literature. Dirty books tells the stories of these authors and their remarkable publishers: Jack Kahane of Obelisk Press and his son Maurice Girodias of Olympia Press, whose catalogue and repertoire anticipated that of the more famous US publisher Grove Press. It offers a humorous and vivid snapshot of a fascinating moment in pornographic and literary history, uncovering a hidden, earlier history of the sexual revolution, when the profits made from erotica helped launch the careers of literary cult figures.Trade Review'Reay and Attwood tell the story of Obelisk and Olympia with admirable scholarly precision.'The Literary Review'Reay and Attwood’s chapter on Kahane’s Obelisk Press... is one of the best.'The Spectator'Avant-garde art has long been associated with the shock of the new but in Dirty Books, Barry Reay and Nina Attwood show the extent to which erotic fiction fuelled modernist writing in London, New York and Paris. Drawing on a motley cast of characters from Anaïs Nin to Alexander Trocchi, Dirty Books is a gripping account of sex, censorship and the avant-garde. ' Douglas Field, co-editor of James Baldwin Review and author of All Those Strangers: The Art and Lives of James Baldwin (OUP, 2015).‘By pushing the boundaries of legally and artistically valid expression, avant-garde literature often blurred the lines between art and pornography. But Reay and Attwood go further, arguing that even the sleaziest paperbacks from Obelisk and Olympia Press also contain unheralded moments of aesthetic brilliance. Filled with absolutely wild quotes from a plethora of titles and authors well beyond the modernist canon, Dirty Books just might be your guide to a whole new reading list!’David Church, Indiana University‘A short guide to the world of twentieth-century, English-language pornography where pseudonyms abounded, men wrote as women, women wrote as men, classics were eroticized, and new works were passed off as classics of the genre. Reay and Attwood describe a dizzying world where sex and money chased each other into books.’Lisa Z. Sigel, author of Governing Pleasures, Making Modern Love, and The People’s Porn'‘Dirty Books lays bare the secret history of the mid-century literary underground, where modernist classics and porn-for-hire traveled along the same clandestine transnational circuits. A unique combination of scholarly analysis and anecdotal wit, it promises to be the authoritative resource on this crucial strand of modern literary history.’Loren Glass, DEO of English at University of Iowa'Barry Reay and Nina Attwood's Dirty Books is proof-positive that the infamous have more fun. Maybe. Gathered in this clutch of microhistories of literary publishers and their coteries are tales elucidating the glittering and sometimes brutal oscillations between pornography and art in the period right before the sexual revolutions of the late 1960s.'Andy Campbell, USC Roski School of Art and Design -- .Table of ContentsIntroduction1 Beginnings: Jack Kahane and Obelisk Press2 The syndicate: pornography for the private collector3 Olympia, Paris4 Repurposed pornography: the role of erotic classics5 Dirty books6 Sexual revolution: Olympia, New York7 Literature or pornography?ConclusionIndex

University of California Press Radical Eroticism
Book SynopsisIn the 1960s, the fascination with erotic art generated a wave of exhibitions and critical discussion on sexual freedom, visual pleasure, and the nude in contemporary art. Radical Eroticism examines the importance of women's contributions in fundamentally reconfiguring representations of sexuality across several areas of advanced art-performance, pop, postminimalism, and beyond. This study shows that erotic art made by women was integral to the profound changes that took place in American art during the sixties, from the crumbling of modernist aesthetics and the expanding field of art practice to the emergence of the feminist art movement. The works of Carolee Schneemann, Martha Edelheit, Marjorie Strider, Hannah Wilke, and Anita Steckel exemplify the innovative approaches to the erotic that explored female sexual subjectivities and destabilized assumptions about gender. Rachel Middleman reveals these artists' radical interventions in both aesthetic conventions and social norms.Trade Review"Rather than calling for a new aesthetic category of “the erotic,” Middleman’s study identifies the use of diverse erotic aesthetics in art produced by women as a means of political action. In so doing, Radical Eroticism amounts to a political act in its own right." * ASAP/J *“…Middleman provides an insightful examination of the exhibition and critical reception of erotic art, laying the groundwork for understanding the social context and political stakes of the approaches of women artists to eroticism in a decade of expanding forms of artistic practice, the demise of modernist aesthetics, and the rise of the feminist art movement.” * Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction 1. Taschen GmbH Erotica Universalis
Book SynopsisFrom the dawn of time, ever since Adam and Eve, all artists of every age—whether the Egyptian, Greek, or Roman artists of Antiquity, or more recent famous names such as Rembrandt, Courbet, Degas, or Picasso—have succumbed to their fantasies, obsessions, and libido and produced erotic works that the censors have taken good care to keep from the public. For Erotica Universalis, we surface from the subterranean realms of the museums to enter those of our national and private libraries. Here we discover that not only most of our famous writers, such as Ovid, Aretino, Voltaire, Verlaine, or Maupassant, wrote erotic texts that bordered on indecency, but also that great artists like Boucher, Fragonard, Dalí, or Matisse were inspired to provide suitable illustrations for these naughty books. For this new hardcover edition of the classic 1995 best seller, we have culled highlights from our Erotica Universalis collection.Trade Review“Icons—from Egypt’s Golden Empire to present day—with a knack for translating sexual fantasies into master works of art.” * The Huffington Post *“…it’s possibly the only place you’ll see Rembrandt alongside Robert Crumb, and expert editing means the collection never strays into the predictable Erotic Print Society territory.” * Arena *“It's tasteful in an arty kind of way, which means you won't have to endure red-hot cheeks at the checkout counter. Once home with the lights dimmed, you're sure to be inspired by the sexy visuals.” * Cosmopolitan *

Book SynopsisCarrés Photographs are simultaneously totally explicit and totally beautiful This is a literally breathtaking collection of nude photographs by perfectionist French photographer Didier Carré. I had given up hope of finding such images, disappointed by the coyness of nude art photography on the one hand and the wearying over-stimulation of pornography on the other. Carrés photographs are simultaneously totally explicit and totally beautiful. His models have a stillness that says we taken a great deal of care and time to produce these images: take your own time to explore them. Carré demonstrates the power of black and white photography to reveal the true form of flesh and muscle in light and shade. The models are rarely adorned, apart from, in many cases, one, sometimes two, glass dildos that catch the light like a jewel, focusing your attention on their inner centre -- Dermot Cox
