    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1987. This important and provocative book explains the persistence of hunger, poverty, and the lack of balanced development in many countries and the central role of agriculture in economic development. Most theories of agricultural development are based on the experiences of western Europe and the United States while the two models for successful late development have been Japan and the Soviet Union. This book surveys the evolution of agriculture under colonialism in Latin America, Africa, and Asia and concludes that this long period distorted the development prospects for these areas and retarded the production of food. Under strong state capitalist governments, a few underdeveloped countries have broken the colonial patterns of development. However, other post-revolutionary societies are having far less success because of economic blockades and outside military intervention. While the primary focus of the book is on the short-run problems of inequalityTable of ContentsPreface 1. The Persistence of Hunger 2. Ideological Approaches to World Hunger 3. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Trophy Hunting

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the psychology of trophy hunting from a critical perspective and considers the reasons why some people engage in the controversial activity of killing often endangered animals for sport. Recent highly charged debate, reaching a peak with the killing of Cecil the lion in 2015, has brought trophy hunting under unprecedented public scrutiny, and yet the psychology of trophy hunting crucially remains under-explored. Considering all related issues from the evolutionary perspective and inclusive fitness', to personality and individual factors like narcissism, empathy, and the Duchenne smiles of hunters posing with their prey, Professor Beattie makes connections between a variety of indicators of prestige and dominance, showing how trophy hunting is inherently linked to a desire for status. He argues that we need to identify, analyse and deconstruct the factors that hold the behaviour of trophy hunting in place if we are to understand why it continues, aTrade Review'What goes on in the mind of trophy hunters? What drives them to spend huge sums of money in the pursuit of increasingly rare animals so they can kill them and take parts of their bodies home? Are trophy hunters pre-disposed to kill? Why do they feel the need to possess? Why are they lauded by some and reviled by many? Are they a mutated throwback to the psychology of our hunting ancestors or are they simply out of step with today’s evolving, ethical perceptions of wildlife and its values? Professor Geoff Beattie brings his intellect, considerable experience and detailed analysis to bear on an issue that divides humanity. • Taylor & Francis Shakespeare on the Ecological Surface

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisShakespeare on the Ecological Surface uses the concept of the âsurfaceâ to examine the relationship between contemporary performance and ecocriticism. Each section looks, in turn, at the 'surfaces' of slick, smoke, sky, steam, soil, slime, snail, silk, skin and stage to build connections between ecocriticism, activism, critical theory, Shakespeare and performance. While the word âsurfaceâ was never used in Shakespeareâs works, Liz Oakley-Brown shows how thinking about Shakespearean surfaces helps readers explore the politics of Elizabethan and Jacobean culture. She also draws surprising parallels with our current political and ecological concerns. The book explores how Shakespeare uses ecological surfaces to help understand other types of surfaces in his plays and poems: charactersâ public-facing selves; contact zones between characters and the natural world; surfaces upon which words are written; and physical surfaces upon which plays are staged. This book willTable of Contents1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the concept of liberty in relation to civilizationâs ability to live within ecological limits.Freedom, in all its renditions â choice, thought, action â has become inextricably linked to our understanding of what it means to be modern citizens. And yet, it is our relatively unbounded freedom that has resulted in so much ecological devastation. Liberty has piggy-backed on transformations in humanânature relationships that characterize the Anthropocene: increasing extraction of resources, industrialization, technological development, ecological destruction, and mass production linked to global consumerism. This volume provides a deeply critical examination of the concept of liberty as it relates to environmental politics and ethics in the long view. Contributions explore this entanglement of freedom and the ecological crisis, as well as investigate alternative modernities and more ecologically benign ways of living on Earth. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisEcological restoration is a rapidly evolving discipline that is engaged with developing both methodologies and strategies for repairing damaged and polluted ecosystems and environments. During the last decade the rapid pace of climate change coupled with continuing habitat destruction and the spread of non-native species to new habitats has forced restoration ecologists to re-evaluate their goals and the methods they use. This comprehensive handbook brings together an internationally respected group of established and rising experts in the field. The book begins with a description of current practices and the state of knowledge in particular areas of restoration, and then identifies new directions that will help the field achieve increasing levels of future success. Part I provides basic background about ecological and environmental restoration. Part II systematically reviews restoration in key ecosystem types located throughout the world. In Part III, management and policy iTrade Review"Allison and Murphy have done a great job in bringing together contributions from both leaders in the field and the next generation, and the geographic spread of authors is reflective of the global need for restoration... Excellent, and highly recommended for any library serving an ecological readership." - British Ecological Society Bulletin (December 2017)"... Allison and Murphy’s book is aimed at 'surveying current practice and identifying future opportunities and problems that will arise in our rapidly changing world.'The book delivers what it proposed to do. It is a substantial volume [...] and it is quite diverse in the topics. Thus, it gives a broad overview of the issues and approaches that are defining the current practice of ecological restoration. The list of topics is by no means exhaustive, but it is diverse enough to have something for everyone." - Carolina Murcia, Universidad Javeriana-Seccional Cali, Columbia and University of Florida, USA in Restoration Ecology (Vol. 26, No. 3, pp. 600-601), May 2018 Table of Contents1.
