Book SynopsisThe sustainable management of waste water should aim at pollution prevention and reduction first, followed by resource recovery and reuse. This work shows that substantial water quality improvements could be achieved through a so-called 3-Step Stategic Approach. The frameworks developed in this research for managing water on-site and at centralized and de-centralized levels can be used in re-designing current systems or designing new systems thatmake optimal use of wastewater components whilst minimising pollution.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Inventory of Existing Water Management Practices in Harare, Zimbabwe; Chapter 3: The Impact of Urbanisation on the Water Quality of Lake Chivero, Zimbabwe; Chapter 4: A Strategic Framework for Managing Wastewater: A Case Study of Harare, Zimbabwe; Chapter 5: Options for Onsite Management of Wastewater in Harare, Zimbabwe; Chapter 6: Options for the Decentralised Management of Wastewater in Harare, Zimbabwe; Chapter 7: Centralised Management of Wastewater in Harare, Zimbabwe: Current Practice and Future Options; Chapter 8: Effluent Polishing via Pasture Irrigation in Harare, Zimbabwe; Chapter 9: A Proposal for the Sustainable Management of Wastewater in Harare, Zimbabwe

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis text presents the key findings of the International Symposium held in Delft in 2003, which explored the process of shallow flows. Shallow flows are found in lowland rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and in density-stratified atmospheres, and may be observed in puddles, as in oceans. They impact on the life and work of a wide variety of readers, who are here provided with a clear overview of the subject. Shallow flows are intrinsically turbulent. On one hand, there are strongly three-dimensional, small-scale turbulent motions and on the other hand, large-scale quasi-two-dimensional turbulence. This book explains and examines these differences and their effects with sections on transport processes in shallow flows; shallow jets, wakes and mixing layers; stratified and rotating flows in ocean and atmosphere; river and channel flows; and numerical modelling and turbulence closure techniques. The reader is provided with the pick of current studies and a fresh approach to the subject, with expert examination of a fascinating and crucial phenomenon of our world's water systems. A A Balkema Publishers Rock Joints: Proceedings of a regional conference

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRock joint behaviour impacts many branches of engineering including surface and underground mining, dam foundations, tunnelling for hydro power and transport, petroleum reservoirs and nuclear waste storage. The subject is in a very active stage of development, and engineers, geologists, and scientists involved in these developments have indicated by their 110 papers that rock joints are of great importance in many fields of engineering. Selected papers span five continents and thirty countries. The subjects covered include geological aspects of joint origin and morphology, mechanical behaviour such as shear strength and deformability, hydraulic behaviour, and dynamic behaviour. The influence of water flow on frictional strength and the effect of joint deformation on water flow are also strongly represented. Great activity is evident in many countries in computer modelling for solving complicated engineering problems where joint behaviour is important. Articles describe the modelling of joints under dams, around wellbores, in petroleum reservoirs, in open pit mines, and around tunnels, shafts and nuclear waste repository excavations. The conference proceedings forms a unique collection of keynote and specialist articles on all aspects of rock joint behaviour.

  • The Morphodynamics of the Wadden Sea

A A Balkema Publishers The Morphodynamics of the Wadden Sea

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Wadden Sea area of the North Sea is one which undergoes rapid morphological changes. Under natural conditions, the barrier islands would adjust them¬selves to a rising sea level. However, be¬cause the islands are densely populated and have an important role as holiday resorts, morphological changes are un¬desirable. Coastal engineering counter-measures have been undertaken to pre¬vent beach erosion, shifting of tidal in¬lets, breaching of dune ridges and land¬ward-directed washover. The natural processes and the results of human inter¬ference including the negative conse¬quences of many of the measures are discussed in detail. The author presents the current state of research, together with the results of his own investigations. In addition, a comprehensive description of the geomorphological development and recent problems of the barrier is¬lands from Texel to Fanø is given forthe first time. The book includes 40 colour photographs and 393 figures, almost all previously unpublished. Sat¬ellite and radar imagery as well as many aerial photographs are also included. The book is intended for geomorphologists, sedimentologists, environmentalists and all those with a scientific interest in tidal flats and barrier islands.

    Brill Transformations of Allyl-Substituted and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book generally shows the interrelation between allyl unit structure of the initial ester and composition and structure of its products. The first part studies the pathways of chemical regrouping in chlorallylaryl and bisarylallyl esters using quantum-chemical calculations. Energy parameters, structural features and electron structure of intermediates and transition states are also discussed. Simple and regioselective methods for compound synthesis inaccessible in other production techniques are developed. For the first time, new four- and eight-term nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds were produced by aniline alkenylation technique. In 0.05% aqueous solution these compounds displayed 100% activity in suppression of sulfate-reducing bacterium growth. Two new classes of complex action preparations designed for the oil production rate increase were obtained by heterocyclic amine alkenylation. Production methods for N-alkenyl ammonium salts derived from hexamethylene tetramine are developed and introduced into production, and compounds are used on oil fields. In the second part production methods of new mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-tert-butyl hexamethylene tetramine chlorides are discussed. These compounds fully suppress sulfate-reducing bacterium growth already in 200 – 500 mg/l concentration. A universal technology deriving bactericides and sulfide corrosion inhibitors for metals from methallyl chloride is developed. It also gives a method for organochlorine waste and methallyl chloride production wastewater management, safe for the environment.Table of ContentsPreface, Part I: Synthesis and properties of alkenyl aryl esters and N-alkenyl substituted amines, Part II: Development of waste management technique for methallyl chloride production and synthesis of small-tonnage chemical products

  • Ultrasonic Diagnostics in Medicine: Physical

Brill Ultrasonic Diagnostics in Medicine: Physical

Book SynopsisTo correctly diagnose a human organism with the help of acoustic waves is impossible without knowledge of the physics of acoustic waves interaction with the issues of the organism. This book is dedicated to the given problem. It consists of four sections, the first of which deals with physical models of the biological issues used in ultrasonic diagnostics. In the other sections the basic stages of ultrasonic diagnostics (sound radiation, sound scattering, depictions visualization) are studied. It is shown how different bodies and issues of a human organism scatter acoustic waves and how, using the scattered wave, one learns about what happens with some body or issue.Trade ReviewVery didactically organized, with ample attention for mathematical detail, which nowhere becomes so complicated that it obscures the physics behind it [...] The first three chapter give a thorough but accessible description of the physics of ultrasonic pulse-echo imaging, while the fourth discusses the possible methods to apply these data for 2D, 3D or time-dependent imagery [...] This book is a useful addition to the ultrasonic imaging literature, stepping into the - rather large - gap between more engineering-oriented texts and theoretical works. • Controlled Release Systems: Advances in

Pan Stanford Publishing Pte Ltd Controlled Release Systems: Advances in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the area of controlled release of active substances, such as drugs, a strong interest in nanoparticles as carriers of active ingredients has arisen. Some of the active components are extremely hydrophobic, without cellular permeability and susceptible to metabolic degradation. Owing to this, their use is limited. This kind of agent can be transported without any problem through physiological media by using nanoparticles. The size of particles is an important parameter because it governs the efficiency of the delivery system. For this type of application, particles that have a diameter smaller than 1 μm are especially useful. Polymeric nanoparticles that have diameters in the colloidal range are produced by means of polymerization processes in dispersed media. Drugs are taken up into the nanoparticles by adsorption, absorption, or “entrapment," or covalent bonding and they are delivered (release) by desorption, diffusion, polymer degradation, or a combination of these mechanisms. Nanoparticles (including nanogels) that release their contents by external triggering open up new possibilities for therapeutic strategies. External triggering by light, heat, change in pH, or application of ultrasound opens up the possibility to release the material on demand. If only a part of the wall of the nanoparticle (nanocapsule) is responsive, we are dealing with the so-called nanobottles, a nanocontainer with the active substance and a lid on the container that can be "opened" and "closed" by external triggering. This book focuses on responsive nanoparticles and brings together two interesting areas: nanoparticles and responsive polymers. The concept of the book is that of a systematic approach from nanoparticles synthesis via responsive polymers to nanobottles. The second part of the book presents contributions from experts in the field and provides a state-of-the-art overview of the field.Table of ContentsResponsive Polymer Nanoparticles.
