Nova Science Publishers Inc Organophosphates: Detection, Exposure and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOrganophosphates are widely used nowadays. They have applications as pesticides, drugs, plasticizers, flame retardants or chemical warfare agents. Their acute toxicity is ascribed to the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, a key enzyme in the transmission of nerve impulses in animals. Their toxic effects are manifested by the accumulation of acetylcholine and can lead to paralysis or death. Organophosphates also inhibit the other enzymes playing important roles in various biochemical processes. Organophosphate poisoning therapy is based on the application of specific antidotes as well as non-specific and symptomatic procedures. In this contribution, the authors overview the organophosphates'' impact on human health and the environment, their various applications, acute exposure and possible treatments. In Volume 1, special attention was given to the connection of organophosphate exposure to cancer, synaptic vulnerability and depression development. The current state of knowledge and the future perspectives regarding their use, regulations, fate in the environment, biomonitoring, routes of exposure and legislation are reviewed. The detection and remediation of organophosphates in the environment using ionic liquids, electrochemical oxidation, carbon materials and metal-organic frameworks are discussed in more detail. The applications of organophosphates as acaricides and flame retardants are also reviewed.

Book SynopsisFloods, species extinction, migration, droughts, super tornadoes - climate change is no longer a threat looming on the horizon but has long since become part of our everyday lives. Limiting the emerging and worsening climate changes is one of the most important challenges of our time. All human induced climate impacts can be traced back to a single factor: Energy. This book provides a comprehensive and readable introduction to the interplay between energy and climate, which also includes the fields of technology, economics, and politics. At the same time, the issue is highly complex and can only be understood in all its details by expert scientists, meaning that the facts are often poorly presented in the political discussion about climate. To put it simply: If we want to stop and even reverse the current climate trends, we need to find answers to the following three questions: · How exactly does our existing way of consuming energy affect the climate? · What options are there for generating energy without negative climate effects, and what do these mean for our lives? · What technological advances will directly help us to achieve this in future? In a non-alarmist yet entertaining manner, the book highlights the key determinants of global energy supply. Readers will come to appreciate the crucial facts about "energy and climate", will be up to date with the latest scientific and technological knowledge, and will understand the global political and economic framework that we need to consider when designing an appropriate future energy and climate policy. At the same time, the author conveys a clear and optimistic message: We already have the technical capabilities (which will be further enhanced in the future) to reverse the devastating climate trends without significantly limiting prosperity. The obstacles lie primarily in economic and political "constraints" and particular conflicts of interest. “A very important book that explains one of the most essential questions of our time - how we can master climate change by an energy transition - with scientific precision and clear words.” Georg Kell, founder and former Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact Table of ContentsForeword.- Part 1 – Energy.- From Aristotle to Nuclear Fusion - The Long Road to Realising What Energy Is. • Water and Environment in the Selenga-Baikal

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Water and Environment in the Selenga-Baikal

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe water resources of the Selenga River/Lake Baikal system are of fundamental importance for the ecosystems and socio-economic development of the region. In this large-scale river and lake basin, there are strong contrasts between regions of relatively pristine nature and massive anthropogenic impacts on the environment. Climate change effects are more pronounced than in most other parts of the earth, and the transition from socialism into a more market-oriented economy has led to a boom in mining but also to a partial collapse of environmental monitoring and urban waste water management systems. Moreover, the expansion of agriculture and mining has triggered a considerable land cover change, rising water consumption, and the release of contaminants that had previously been unknown to the region. The consequences for the water resources and the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems depending on them have become increasingly visible in recent years. This book, which is based on contributions to the 2014 "Bringing Together Selenga-Baikal Research Conference", provides a multidisciplinary insight into current water-related challenges and strategies for their solution from the viewpoint of the international scientific community.

Book SynopsisIt goes without saying that one building after the other was built in the Dutch East Indies, the current Indonesia. Newspapers jubilated again a jewel for the city. The man behind it was Eduard Cuypers (1859-1927). With his firm he was one of the most celebrated architects in the Netherlands around 1900. He has fallen into oblivion due to changed views in architecture. Working from Amsterdam, his office designed numerous projects overseas in collaboration with Marius Hulswit (1862-1921) and Arthur Fermont (1882-1967), many of this buildings still exist in Indonesia. They are landmarks of a bygone era in Indonesian city. This is a fascinating story about these buildings and the people behind them. Book SynopsisWinner of The Green Prize for Sustainable LiteratureA Finalist for the PEN/Bograd Weld Prize for BiographyFour influential women we thought we knew well—Jane Jacobs, Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall, and Alice Waters—and how they spearheaded the modern progressive movementThis is the story of four visionaries who profoundly shaped the world we live in today. Together, these women—linked not by friendship or field, but by their choice to break with convention—showed what one person speaking truth to power can do. Jane Jacobs fought for livable cities and strong communities; Rachel Carson warned us about poisoning the environment; Jane Goodall demonstrated the indelible kinship between humans and animals; and Alice Waters urged us to reconsider what and how we eat. With a keen eye for historical detail, Andrea Barnet traces the arc of each woman’s career and explores how their work collectively changed the course of history. While they hailed from different generations, Carson, Jacobs, Goodall, and Waters found their voices in the early sixties. At a time of enormous upheaval, all four stood as bulwarks against 1950s corporate culture and its war on nature. Consummate outsiders, each prevailed against powerful and mostly male adversaries while also anticipating the disaffections of the emerging counterculture. All told, their efforts ignited a transformative progressive movement while offering people a new way to think about the world and a more positive way of living in it.
