Book Synopsis"A former Environmental Protection Agency attorney delivers an impassioned plea to fight pollution and climate change. Timely and engaging; a heroic environmental story well told." - Kirkus Book Review, April 22, 2020 (50th Anniversary of Earth Day)               "Written both as a historic record and ''how to'' guide aimed at inspiring change makers, this unvarnished and timely depiction from 1980 to today has something to offer readers of any age or ilk. Emory pulls back the curtain to expose the inner workings of the federal government and the EPA. He dives into the data-historic indicators, scientific and economic data, and policy choices-as well as humorously illustrating his forays abroad and his courtroom adventures. He tells the story of rampant pollution and how the US has fallen so far behind in its response to climate change and transition to clean energy. Emory has faith in forthcoming environmentalists, and his solutions-oriented presentation of the facts makes complex, cross-sector challenges feel within our grasp." - Fiona Gordon, published in Maine Environment newsletter of the Natural Resources Council of Maine (Augusta, Maine, spring & summer 2020)"This hybrid that is a must-read memoir and climate change book is NOT another dry treatise or one-sided, unbalanced diatribe. Richard Emory has written a very thoroughly knowledgeable and realistic account of the truth about EPA and how to fight pollution. He weaves in wonderful personal climate change stories and anecdotes about successes and failures of environmental policies enacted in the U.S. and other countries and how national attitudes have affected climate change & EPA''s mission. Young people will be inspired to learn how to protect our environment." - David Katz, retired Assistant United States Attorney *  *  *  * *With the election of President Biden and a new Congress, America is rejoining the Western world that sees the need for the U.S. to revive its EPA, formulate a "Green New Deal," and restore U.S. global leadership within the Paris Climate Accord.Fighting Pollution and Climate Change is a must-read memoir by Richard W. Emory, Jr., our nation''s former top legal advisor to all EPA federal special agents. Emory witnessed how the U.S Department of Justice failed to effectively prosecute crimes of pollution. He became a whistleblower when interviewed by Congress that was investigating reports of mishandled pollution cases. In the second half of his career, working within EPA''s foreign assistance mission, to the waiting world he helped spread effective measures for pollution control and for the implementation of global environmental treaties.Fighting Pollution and Climate Change is a "page-turner" - you will laugh, you will cry, but you won''t be bored. You will learn the truth about U.S. and international successes and failures in the fight against air, water, pesticides and toxic-waste pollution. You''ll be encouraged by his insider perspective as he tells how to protect the climate using today''s technologies and EPA''s proven policies. Who will benefit from this important environmental book?Aspiring environmental activists - both young and old - who want to learn how to fight pollution and take action on climate changeLovers of memoirs and nature, who will be touched by one individual''s adventures in the exciting work of pollution control that can and must be expanded to climate protectionGlobal leaders and movements prepared to face the next chapter of unifying our world under a much stronger agenda to heal the Earth and protect our planet

Taylor & Francis Ltd Linking Conservation and Poverty Reduction:

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis'This book aims to inspire the conservation community not to regard poverty reduction as someone else's job but to take responsibility for it as part of ecosystem restoration. Though no solutions are perfect, the text and examples given offer encouraging and useful guidance.' Gill Shepherd, poverty and landscapes thematic leader, IUCN Forest Conservation Programme. 'This book could be the catalyst for a real paradigm shift - not just in capital cities and international conference centres, but also on the ground in locations where poor people are struggling to make a living.' Policy Matters (praise for the first edition). High levels of rural poverty in many of the world's ecosystems make it an ethical and practical imperative to find more equitable and realistic ways of achieving conservation. Livelihoods of the rural poor and options for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity are so intimately entwined that they are better addressed through an integrated approach, irrespective of whether the primary motivation is one of development or one of conservation. This highly accessible book, a revised edition of the 2005 book Poverty and Conservation: Landscapes, People and Power, offers a grand overview of the issues and a conceptual framework for addressing poverty reduction in the context of conservation, and conservation in the context of poverty reduction. It will appeal to professionals working in the field as well as to students across the fields of conservation, development and sustainability. It looks at the rationale for addressing the links between conservation and poverty reduction, arguing that such a focus is both ethically essential and a source of opportunities. It alsoreviews experiences in dealing with people and conservation and identifies some key lessons and concepts. The book presents cases studies illustrating various approaches and a discussion of some of the issues that appear when implementing combined conservation and poverty reduction. The book emphasizes the importance of multiple spatial scales and negotiating trade-offs between scales. It also tackles the complex issue of institutional landscapes and the way in which changes at various institutional levels can lead to different and often more positive outcomes. The Final part summarizes some of the main features of the authors' integrated approach and identifies some of the challenges involved in efforts to combine conservation and poverty reduction. • Gender and Climate Change: An Introduction

Taylor & Francis Ltd Gender and Climate Change: An Introduction

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAlthough climate change affects everybody it is not gender neutral. It has significant social impacts and magnifies existing inequalities such as the disparity between women and men in their vulnerability and ability to cope with this global phenomenon. This new textbook, edited by one of the authors of the seminal Women and the Environment in the Third World: Alliance for the Future (1988) which first exposed the links between environmental degradation and unequal impacts on women, provides a comprehensive introduction to gender aspects of climate change. Over 35 authors have contributed to the book. It starts with a short history of the thinking and practice around gender and sustainable development over the past decades. Next it provides a theoretical framework for analyzing climate change manifestations and policies from the perspective of gender and human security. Drawing on new research, the actual and potential effects of climate change on gender equality and women's vulnerabilities are examined, both in rural and urban contexts. This is illustrated with a rich range of case studies from all over the world and valuable lessons are drawn from these real experiences. Too often women are primarily seen as victims of climate change, and their positive roles as agents of change and contributors to livelihood strategies are neglected. The book disputes this characterization and provides many examples of how women around the world organize and build resilience and adapt to climate change and the role they are playing in climate change mitigation. The final section looks at how far gender mainstreaming in climate mitigation and adaptation has advanced, the policy frameworks in place and how we can move from policy to effective action. Accompanied by a wide range of references and key resources, this book provides students and professionals with an essential, comprehensive introduction to the gender aspects of climate change.Trade Review'This book gives a profound and informative introduction and presents a wide range of case studies that will inform and inspire scholars, policymakers, advisors and students about the relevance of the interlinkages between gender and climate change. Royal Society of Chemistry Air Quality in Urban Environments

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisUrban air quality is a topic which remains high on the scientific and political agenda. Concentrations of most air pollutants are higher in urban areas than in the surrounding rural regions, and given the high population densities, it is within urban areas that the majority of the population receive their air pollutant exposure. Despite the continued implementation of abatement measures, concentrations of air pollutants within urban areas frequently exceed health-based guidelines and stricter measures to restrict emissions are required. This comprehensive volume, written by authoritative authors, deals with the basic science of urban air pollution in relation to the sources and concentrations, and the atmospheric chemical and physical processes which determine those concentrations and lead to the formation of secondary pollutants by chemical reactions in the atmosphere. The health effects of urban air pollution are described as is the policy response designed to mitigate the problems. Some of the highest air pollutant exposures occur within underground railway systems and this topic is considered explicitly in its own chapter. With comprehensive coverage from sources through atmospheric processes, to human exposure and effects on health and the policy response, this topical work will be of interest to scientists and policy makers within this field as well advanced students.Table of ContentsUrban air pollution climates throughout the world Influences of meteorology on air pollution process and concentrations Atmospheric chemical processes important in cities Air pollution in underground railway systems Human exposure: indoor and outdoor Health effects of urban air pollution The policy response to improving urban air quality

  • Land and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding

Taylor & Francis Ltd Land and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding

Book SynopsisClaims to land and territory are often a cause of conflict, and land issues present some of the most contentious problems for post-conflict peacebuilding. Among the land-related problems that emerge during and after conflict are the exploitation of land-based resources in the absence of authority, the disintegration of property rights and institutions, the territorial effect of battlefield gains and losses, and population displacement. In the wake of violent conflict, reconstitution of a viable land-rights system is crucial: an effective post-conflict land policy can foster economic recovery, help restore the rule of law, and strengthen political stability. But the reestablishment of land ownership, land use, and access rights for individuals and communities is often complicated and problematic, and poor land policies can lead to renewed tensions. In twenty-one chapters by twenty-five authors, this book considers experiences with, and approaches to, post-conflict land issues in seventeen countries and in varied social and geographic settings. Highlighting key concepts that are important for understanding how to address land rights in the wake of armed conflict, the book provides a theoretical and practical framework for policy makers, researchers, practitioners, and students.Land and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding is part of a global initiative to identify and analyze lessons in post-conflict peacebuilding and natural resource management. The project has generated six edited books of case studies and analyses, with contributions from practitioners, policy makers, and researchers. Other books in the series address high-value resources, water, livelihoods, assessing and restoring resources, and governance.Table of ContentsForeword 1. Book SynopsisHuman biomonitoring has developed from a research tool in occupational and environmental health to identify and quantify exposures to harmful substances in urine and blood. The analytical methods for detection of substances in biological media have considerably improved with smaller detection limits and more precise and specific measurements. Human biomonitoring is a valuable tool in exposure estimation of selected populations and currently used in surveillance programs all over the world. This two volume set provides an overview of current available biomarkers and human biomonitoring programs in environmental health, which is timely given the present debate on adverse health effects from environmental exposures. The books decribe both previous and ongoing studies as well as the newer biomarkers of exposure and effects. Volume one describes current human biomonitoring programs in Germany, Romania, France, Canada, India and Belgium, providing convincing evidence of a global decline in human exposures to lead and increasing concern from exposure to endocrine disruptors and the genotoxic compound. Biomarkers of specific exposures to a wide range of widely used everyday compounds such as phthalates, PFCs, bisphenol A, brominated flame retardants, PAHs, dioxins, mercury and arsenic are also discussed. Volume two decribes human biomonitoing of exposures to environmental tobacco smoke, mycotoxins, physiological stress, hormone activity, oxidative stress and ionizing radiation, as well as effect biomarkers of hemoglobin adducts, germ cells, micronuclei and individual susceptability. • Biological Conversion of Biomass for Fuels and

Royal Society of Chemistry Biological Conversion of Biomass for Fuels and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is divided into two parts. The first covers biomass modification to facilitate the industrial degradation processing and other characteristics of feedstocks. These include reduction in the general recalcitrance of plant cell wall and downstream processing costs. The second focuses on cutting edge technologies for the conversion of lignocelluloses into biofuels and other products. It describes the most up-to-date advances in natural biomass utilization systems, such as wood-feeding termites and animals that efficiently degrade lignocellulosic substrates. Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) integrates cellulase production and cellulose hydrolysis, with pentose and hexose fermentation in a single step. This replicates what happens in the digestive systems of animals, such as termites and cows, that effectively degrade lignocellulosic substrates. CBP has the potential to reduce production costs and lower capital investment whilst increasing conversion efficiency. Currently, there are no CBP-enabling micro-organisms suitable for industrial applications. Consequently, this book presents technologies which integrate the lignocellulolytic systems of insects and other animals to advance CBP strategy for cellulosic biofuels. It covers the progress made, and challenges faced, with the utilisation of gene, catalyst, and other unique mechanisms from cellulose-eating animals, as well as cutting-edge technologies developed to reduce the general recalcitrance of feedstocks for processing. This volume makes essential reading for academics and industrial groups concerned with overcoming the challenges inherent in the biological conversion of biomass into fuels and chemicals.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisNew intellectual property regimes are entrenching new inequalities. Access to information is fundamental to the exercise of human rights and marketplace competition, but patents are being used to lock up vital educational, software, genetic and other information, creating a global property order dominated by a multinational elite. How did intellectual property rules become part of the World Trade Organization's free trade agreements? How have these rules changed the knowledge game for international business? What are the consequences for the ownership of biotechnology and digital technology, and for all those who have to pay for what was once shared information? Based on extensive interviews with key players, this book tells the story of these profound transformations in information ownership. The authors argue that in the globalized information society, the rich have found new ways to rob the poor, and shows how intellectual property rights can be more democratically defined.Trade Review'A singularly apposite book.' Computer Bulletin 'Well-written, vigorously argued and beautifully clear.' Journal of Public Administration 'A compelling read.' International Journal of Law and Information Technology 'The book provides an overview of how international property rules have been quietly redrawn in the past 20 years. An interesting point for the sector is the call for broader coalitions to be formed to challenge such measures.' Book SynopsisOn September 1st 1996, ISO 14001 was published, worldwide. Written over five years in consultation with international industrial experts, non-governmental organizations and regulators, this environmental management systems standard will help organizations manage their impacts on the environment, no matter what their size, nature or location. The implications for the future are enormous. But what does the standard mean in the real world? What changes do managers have to make to accommodate its principles? What decisions need to be faced and when? Is it really going to make a difference or is it just another case of global greenwash? Will it be another missed opportunity for you, your organisation, or your market? At the start of what promises to be a worldwide explosion of interest in standardised EMSs, ISO 14001 and Beyond looks at their creation, their use, and their limitations, attempting to discover the essential truth about this important management tool and where it will take industry. ISO 14001 and Beyond assembles the leading thinkers and practitioners in the field to record their thoughts and experiences on the new standard, its advantages and disadvantages. The book is designed to provide the reader with enough information with which to form an opinion on the future, and how that will influence subsequent actions. It also provides reassurance that, although the problems are real, so are the solutions. ISO 14001 and Beyond gives you the opportunity to read what some of the best minds have made of the standard so far and what they think lies ahead. There are reports covering a global spectrum of concern: from the US, Russia, Japan, Canada, Germany, the UK, and more; from multinationals, small- and medium-sized enterprises, local government, universities and professional bodies. All this material is gathered together in one book to give you the best, most meaningful information for the crucial decisions that you will need to make in the coming months.Trade ReviewThis lively and wide-ranging book provides the clearest account yet of the difference between a public commitment to a standard ... and a proven commitment to actual environmental improvement. Book SynopsisToday, most of the 2,800 tranquil acres that make up Wye Island are managed by the Maryland Park Service. However, from 1973 to 1974, the island was the site of a raging controversy. A major developer, James Rouse, wanted to build a compact waterfront village that would be surrounded by large estates, protected farms, and wetlands. A boyhood resident of nearby Easton, Maryland, Rouse hoped that the island could avoid the sprawl of unplanned subdivisions that were marring so many other places along the Eastern Shore. Combining history, journalism, character sketches, and sharp sociological insight, Boyd Gibbons presents the conflict over Wye Island in its multiple dimensions - as an example of the emerging community-based activism of the 1960s and 70s, and of a community that, while exercising its right to preserve its identity, denies opportunities for its members to improve their lives through change. In fact, Wye Island proves not to be the environmental David-Goliath struggle that might be expected. For one thing, residents opposed a development plan that can be regarded as an early model for 'smart growth.' And many were no more favorably disposed to a park or preserve than to a planned village. Their interest was in protecting the community from an invasion of immigrants from ethnically diverse Baltimore and Washington, and, where the wealthy were concerned, protecting some very private views of the water. In the end, rich landowners, poor 'natives,' and many recent newcomers opposed the Rouse project - distrusting change, and, above all, fearing 'outsiders.' The special reprint of Wye Island includes a new foreword by distinguished environmental historian Adam Rome, who explores the enduring themes of Wye Island in context of the current debates about land use, development, and sprawl.Trade Review'Gibbons‘s book moves with the grace of a novel.' Book SynopsisIn America's arid southwest, climate change will occur in the context of already-keen competition for water for agriculture, urban growth, electricity generation, water-based recreation, and environmental protections. This book explores the challenges that climate change and variability pose for water and energy managers and users, communities, and policy makers in the arid Southwest and demonstrates the application of economic methods to address these challenges. It provides valuable tools for both those interested in resource management and climate change, and those seeking to understand how economic methods can be used to analyze contemporary social problems and craft appropriate responses. The book considers both adaptation to long-term climate change and more immediate issues of water and electricity management in the face of inter-annual climate variability and drought. Thus, no matter what one's perspective on long-run climate change projections, the book provides useful lessons for some of the region's most pressing resource management problems.Trade ReviewThese findings and recommendations will be useful to federal, state, and regional policy makers who set the legal and regulatory framework for the more effective use of climate information and functioning of efficient water markets. From the Foreword by Chuck Howe, Professor Emeritus of Economics, University of Colorado at Boulder Clear and readable...will be of interest to scholars and policy professionals. Robert A. Young, Professor Emeritus, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Colorado State University I welcome this book and will use it in my own teaching and research. • Extreme Value Theory with Applications to Natural

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Extreme Value Theory with Applications to Natural

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis richly illustrated book describes statistical extreme value theory for the quantification of natural hazards, such as strong winds, floods and rainfall, and discusses an interdisciplinary approach to allow the theoretical methods to be applied. The approach consists of a number of steps: data selection and correction, non-stationary theory (to account for trends due to climate change), and selecting appropriate estimation techniques based on both decision-theoretic features (e.g., Bayesian theory), empirical robustness and a valid treatment of uncertainties. It also examines and critically reviews alternative approaches based on stochastic and dynamic numerical models, as well as recently emerging data analysis issues and presents large-scale, multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art case studies. Intended for all those with a basic knowledge of statistical methods interested in the quantification of natural hazards, the book is also a valuable resource for engineers conducting risk analyses in collaboration with scientists from other fields (such as hydrologists, meteorologists, climatologists). Book SynopsisThis open access textbook introduces the emerging field of Development Engineering and its constituent theories, methods, and applications. It is both a teaching text for students and a resource for researchers and practitioners engaged in the design and scaling of technologies for low-resource communities. The scope is broad, ranging from the development of mobile applications for low-literacy users to hardware and software solutions for providing electricity and water in remote settings. It is also highly interdisciplinary, drawing on methods and theory from the social sciences as well as engineering and the natural sciences. The opening section reviews the history of “technology-for-development” research, and presents a framework that formalizes this body of work and begins its transformation into an academic discipline. It identifies common challenges in development and explains the book’s iterative approach of “innovation, implementation, evaluation, adaptation.” Each of the next six thematic sections focuses on a different sector: energy and environment; market performance; education and labor; water, sanitation and health; digital governance; and connectivity. These thematic sections contain case studies from landmark research that directly integrates engineering innovation with technically rigorous methods from the social sciences. Each case study describes the design, evaluation, and/or scaling of a technology in the field and follows a single form, with common elements and discussion questions, to create continuity and pedagogical consistency. Together, they highlight successful solutions to development challenges, while also analyzing the rarely discussed failures. The book concludes by reiterating the core principles of development engineering illustrated in the case studies, highlighting common challenges that engineers and scientists will face in designing technology interventions that sustainably accelerate economic development.Development Engineering provides, for the first time, a coherent intellectual framework for attacking the challenges of poverty and global climate change through the design of better technologies. It offers the rigorous discipline needed to channel the energy of a new generation of scientists and engineers toward advancing social justice and improved living conditions in low-resource communities around the world.Table of ContentsPart I: A New Discipline: Development Engineering.-Chapter 1: The Role Of Technology In Development.- Chapter 2: The Development Engineering Framework: Innovate, Evaluate, Scale.-Chapter 3: Asking the Right Questions.-Part II: Water, Sanitation and Health.-Chapter 4: Advances In Water and Health Technologies.-Chapter 5: Case Study: Electrochemical Arsenic Remediation, India (Innovation).-Chapter 6: Case Study: Information For Intermittent Water Supply, India (Evaluation).-Chapter 7: Case Study: Mobile Phone Diagnostic Microscopy, Vietnam/Cameroon (Innovation, Scale).-Part III: Governance.- Chapter 8: Technologies for Governance And Accountability.-Chapter 9: Case Study: Sensors For Aid Accountability, Rwanda (Evaluation, Scale).-Chapter 10: Case Study: High Resolution Development Indicators, Afghanistan (Evaluation, Scale).-Chapter 11: Case Study: Monitoring For Elections And Public Service Delivery, Kenya (Evaluation, Scale).-Part IV: Energy and Resources.-Chapter 12: Advances in Energy & Environmental Technologies.-Chapter 13: Case Study: Economic Impacts Of Rural Electrification, Kenya (Evaluation, Scale).-Chapter 14: Case Study: Cool Joule: Flexible Energy Loads, Nicaragua (Innovation, Evaluation).-Chapter 15: Case Study: Cookstove Monitoring and Use In East Africa (Innovation, Evaluation).-Part V: Information.-Chapter 16: Information and Communications Technology For Development.-Chapter 17: Case Study: Community Cellular Networks, Philippines (Innovation, Evaluation).-Chapter 18: Case Study: ICT Solutions To Bring Telemedicine To Rural India (Innovation).-Chapter 19: Case Study: Platforms For Development Data (ODK/Mezuri) (Innovation, Scale).-PART VI: Markets (Incorporates Agriculture).-Chapter 20: Technologies To Improve Market Performance.-Chapter 21: Case Study: Ag Market Information Platforms, India (Innovation, Evaluation, Scale).-Chapter 22: Case Study: Agricultural Trading Platforms, Uganda (Innovation, Evaluation).-Chapter 23: Case Study: Inventory And Supply Chain Tracking, Sri Lanka (Evaluation).-PART VII: Human Capital (Incorporates Labor).-Chapter 24: Increasing the Productivity of Human Capital.-Chapter 25: Case Study: Electronic Job Search Platforms, India (Evaluation, Scale).-Chapter 26: Case Study: Customized E-Learning Innovations, India (Evaluation).-Chapter 27: Case Study: TBD (Evaluation).-PART VIII: Conclusion.-Chapter 28: Promising Directions in Development Engineering.
