  • Human WellBeing and the Natural Environment

Oxford University Press Human WellBeing and the Natural Environment

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Human Well-Being and the Natural Environment, Partha Dasgupta explores ways to measure the quality of life. Although the problem pervades a number of academic disciplines, it is not confined to the academic realm. International organizations regularly publish cross-country estimates of the quality of life, journalists and commentators publicize them, and national governments are obliged to take note of them. Today, quality-of-life indices broker political arguments and together form a coin that even helps purchase economic and social policy. It is therefore ironic that indices of human well-being in current use are notably insensitive to our dependence on the natural environment, both at a moment in time and across generations. Moreover, international discussions on economic development in poor regions all too frequently ignore the natural resource base. In developing quality-of-life measures, Professor Dasgupta pays particular attention to the natural environment, illustrating how iTrade ReviewPartha Dasgupta is a very highly regarded economic theorist, and this book shows why. Dasgupta writes more clearly, and in a more acessible manner than most highly regarded economic theorists ... this book has much to recommend it ... elegant and incisive analysis. * Journal of Public Policy *A very interesting and stimulating book. * Journal of Economics *Exemplary exposition of the environment's role in fostering socio-economic advance as part of human well-being ... enlightening from start to finish. * Nature *Building on his classic magnum opus ... Partha Dasgupta has joined this rethink in an intellectually rich, thought-provoking and occasionally metaphysical work. His new book probes many issues beyond those that might be anticipated from the title and confirms his position as one of the most exciting economic thinkers today ... we can ask why so many feel we need reforms in ethical behaviour to ensure sustainability. Dasgupta touches on some of the framework needed to answer this question. More is needed. If anyone is going to supply it is is likely to be Dasgupta. * Times Higher Education Supplement *Concepts like GDP focus on easily measurable things, whilst omitting ecosystem services and other environmental factors on which life ultimately depends. Partha Dasgupta is a seminal figure in his discipline, taking on the difficult, yet hugely important, task of trying meaningfully to measure ''quality of life''. This book will, I hope, set the tone for the new millennium, melding conventional economic concepts, ecological and environmental science, and a great deal of plain commonsense. • Industrial Transformation in the Developing World

Oxford University Press, USA Industrial Transformation in the Developing World

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis''Grow first, clean up later'' environmental strategies in the developing economies of East Asia - China, Korea, and Taiwan in Northeast Asia and Indonesia, Malaysia, the Phillippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in Southeast Asia - pose a critical regional and global sustainability challenge in this area of continuing rapid urban-based industrial growth. It is the most polluted region in the world.Whilst being at the leading edge of the processes of urbanization, industrialization, and globalization these economies are in the midst, not at the end, of their urban-industrial transformations. During the next 25 years urban populations in the region are expected roughly to double, and most of the industrial capital stock that will be on the ground by 2030 has not yet been built. Given East Asia''s growing size in the world''s economy and ecology, and its increasingly polluted environment, this looming urban-industrial transformation is both a challenge and an opportunity. Unless steps are taken now to make this transformation more sustainable, East Asia''s, and the world''s, environmental future is likely to deteriorate seriously.Using detailed case studies and rigorous empirical analyses Rock and Angel, leading experts in this field, show that East Asian governments have found institutionally unique ways to overcome the sustainability challenge. As a result of these findings, they demonstrate how even low income economies in the rest of the world can use regulatory polices, industrial policies, and an openness to trade and foreign investment that will increase the competitiveness of their firms whilst improving their environmental performance, thus proving an important antidote to those who argue that poor countries cannot afford to clean up their environment whilst their economies remain under-developed.Table of Contents1. • Gender and Green Governance

Oxford University Press Gender and Green Governance

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisEconomists studying environmental collective action and green governance have paid little attention to gender. Research on gender and green governance in other disciplines has focused mainly on women''s near absence from forestry institutions. This interdisciplinary book turns that focus on its head to ask: what if women were present in these institutions? What difference would that make? Would women''s inclusion in forest governance - undeniably important for equity - also affect decisions on forest use and outcomes for conservation and subsistence? Are women''s interests in forests different from men''s? Would women''s presence lead to better forests and more equitable access? Does it matter which class of women governs? And how large a presence of women would make an impact? Answers to these questions can prove foundational for effective environmental governance. Yet they have hardly been empirically investigated. In an analysis that is conceptually sophisticated and statistically rTrade ReviewGender and Green Governance is a magisterial work of astounding erudition. While resplendent with field interviews and statistical tables, its ultimate significance is as a thought-provoking examination of political institutionswhat makes them legitimate, efficient, inclusive, representative and stable over time. * Studies in Indian Politics *Gender and Green Governance will rightly be acknowledged as a classic not just in environmental studies, but in studies of development, governance, public action and public service delivery more broadly ... It is a rigorous, engaged and deeply serious exploration of the conditions under which the greater involvement of women in forest management committees improves the quality of environmental (or green) governance ... it is a landmark text. * Stuart Corbridge, The Journal of Development Studies *[A] tour de force ... rigorous, insightful and broad-ranging ... The book is innovative at more levels than one can list. * Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Indian Express *An impressive study of women and community forestry in India and Nepal. * Nancy Folbre, The New York Times *Path-breaking...an immense contribution not only to ecological economics but also to political science, rural sociology, and energy studies...a landmark contribution with depth and insight. * Joan Martinez-Alier, Economic and Political Weekly *An immense, novel contribution to the literature and a milestone in the ongoing debate on forest governance, gender, rural energy and political economy...exceptional. * Kanchana Wickramasinghe, South Asia Economic Journal *A timely reminder of the need for broad-based "Green Governance" which is inclusive of women. While focused on the forestry sector, the book very convincingly establishes the principle of community participation in management, conservation and sustainable use of dwindling natural resources. * Khawar Mumtaz, The Friday Times *Bina Agarwal has crafted a book of central importance in today's world. Both women and their connections with forests have been under-represented in the field, in academic research, and in policy. With analytical rigour and originality, Agarwal bridges these major gaps in our understanding of the difference women can make, when they are actively involved in forest governance. * Elinor Ostrom, Nobel Laureate in Economics 2009 *Beautifully written and soundly argued, this book makes an outstanding contribution to the fields of both environmental economics and governance. Drawing on over a decade of fieldwork in India and Nepal, and eschewing easy generalizations, Bina Agarwal offers a richly layered and insightful treatment of the effects of women's presence in local bodies governing village forests. * Jean-Philippe Platteau, University of Namur and co-author of Halting Degradation of Natural Resources *A nuanced analysis that demonstrates the value of mixed-methods approaches ... an important book. * Ruth Meinzein-Dick, Feminist Economics *Cutting across areas of economics, environmental studies, political economy, gender studies, local green governance and public policy, this book needs to be read by all...this is a book for the people. * Manju Chellani, Indian Journal of Gender Studies *Table of ContentsPART 1: THE POTENTIAL OF PRESENCE; PART 2: THE IMPACT OF PRESENCE; PART 3: BEYOND PRESENCE

But giant corporations are plundering the world''s oceans, aided by global finance and complicit states, following the neoliberal maxim of Blue Growth. The situation is dire: rampant exploitation and corruption now drive all aspects of the ocean economy, destroying communities, intensifying inequalities, and driving fish populations and other ocean life towards extinction. The Blue Commons is an urgent call for change, from a campaigning economist responsible for some of the most innovative solutions to inequality of recent times. From large nations bullying smaller nations into giving up eco-friendly fishing policies to the profiteering by the Crown Estate in commandeering much of the British seabed, the scale of the global problem is synthesised here for the first time, as well as a toolkit for all of us to rise up and tackle it.The oceans have been left out of calls for a Green New Deal but must be at the centre of the fight against climate change. How do we do it? By building a Blue Commons alternative: a transformative worldview and new set of proposals that prioritise the historic rights of local communities, the wellbeing of all people and, with it, the health of our oceans.Trade ReviewIn this landmark book, Guy Standing not only documents how state-corporate collusion is destroying fragile ocean ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal communities. He explains how degrowth economics and fishery commons could restore the 'Blue Commons-Wealth' that belongs to all of us. Book SynopsisThe little-known story of the systems that bring us our drinking water, how they were developed, the problems they are facing, and how they will be reinvented Turn on the faucet, and water pours out. Pull out the drain plug, and the dirty water disappears. Most of us give little thought to the hidden systems that bring us water and take it away when we're done with it. But these underappreciated marvels of engineering face an array of challenges that cannot be solved without a fundamental change to our relationship with water, David Sedlak explains in this enlightening book. To make informed decisions about the future, we need to understand the three revolutions in urban water systems that have occurred over the past 2,500 years and the technologies that will remake the system. The author starts by describing Water 1.0, the early Roman aqueducts, fountains, and sewers that made dense urban living feasible. He then details the development of drinking water and sewage treatment systemsthe second and third revolutions in urban water. He offers an insider's look at current systems that rely on reservoirs, underground pipe networks, treatment plants, and storm sewers to provide water that is safe to drink, before addressing how these water systems will have to be reinvented. For everyone who cares about reliable, clean, abundant water, this book is essential reading.Trade Review“Sedlak . . . has contributed a gem to the growing shelf of books on the emerging crisis surrounding water. . . . Book SynopsisNatural Resources and the Environment: Economics, Law, Politics, and Institutions provides a new approach to the study of environmental and natural resource economics. It augments current contributions from the fields of public choice, law, and economics, and the burgeoning field of what used to be called the New Institutional Economics, to describe, explain, and interpret how these new developments have been applied to better understand the economics of natural resources and the environment. This textbook takes a multi-disciplinary approach, which is essential for understanding complex environmental problems, and examines the issue from not only an economic perspective, but also taking into account law, politics, and institutions. In doing so, it provides students with a realistic understanding of how environmental policy is created and presents a comprehensive examination of real-world environmental policy. The book provides a comprehensive coverage of key issues, Trade ReviewClimate Change, Biodiversity, Population Growth, Endangered Species, Depleted Fisheries, Overharvest of Tropical Forests. These are the environmental and resource issues of the day, but confronting them typically is presented in a far too simplistic and often moralistic manner. The problems are far more complex. Mark Kanazawa provides an important and critically-needed overview of key issues that must be understood, Trade Offs. Book SynopsisIn this significantly revised second edition of Bronwyn Haywardâs acclaimed book Children Citizenship and Environment, she examines how students, with teachers, parents, and other activists, can learn to take effective action to confront the complex drivers of the current climate crisis including: economic and social injustice, colonialism and racism. The global school strikes demand adults, governments, and businesses take far-reaching action in response to our climate crisis. The school strikes also remind us why this important youthful activism urgently needs the support of all generations. The #SchoolStrike edition of Children Citizenship and Environment includes all new contributions by youth, indigenous and disability activists, researchers and educators: Raven Cretney, Mehedi Hasan, Sylvia Nissen, Jocelyn Papprill, Kate Prendergast, Kera Sherwood Oâ Regan, Mia Sutherland, Amanda Thomas, Sara Tolbert, Sarah Thomson, Josiah Tualamali'i, and Amelia Woods.Trade Review"Bronwyn Hayward captures the struggles of a generation whose present and future is threatened by climate change and other interrelated crises. Her call for more democratic processes highlights the need for deep social transformations, and her SEEDS citizenship model provides us with an actionable framework for nurturing political agency in support a vision of communitarian ecological citizenship. This revised #SchoolStrike edition presents a powerful perspective on youth activism and a growing movement that is committed to equity and social justice." – Professor Karen O’Brien, University of Oslo, Norway"Writing this during the Covid-19 pandemic is a salutary reminder of the importance of books like the second edition of Bronwyn Hayward's Children Citizenship and Environment. Amidst our current crisis Hayward's book is a source of hope. Hope in our young people and the next generation rising to the challenge and opportunities for transformation created by the planetary emergency. 'Hope is the thing with feathers' the poet Emily Dickinson noted. But hope is also the child standing with a poster demanding climate action now, as Hayward's timely and important book tells us." – John Barry, Professor of Green Political Economy, Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland"Bronwyn Hayward is the rare political scientist who listens to the political views of those who are too young to vote. In Children Citizenship and Environment #SchoolStrike Edition she shares the civic and environmental concerns of children and adolescents and urges us to expand our political imagination, see the connections between ecological and social crises, and embrace the values of a new generation of moral and political activists." – Professor Constance A. Flanagan, Vaughan Bascom Professor of Women, Family, and Community, School of Human Ecology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA."This new edition of Bronwyn Hayward’s pathfinding text is an all-too-rare thing: serious scholarship that is seriously useful. The book’s communitarian approach to ecological citizenship gives clear pointers for adult allies, teachers and parents that can help them support young people who are having to make sense of an unprecedented body of challenges. Faced with a chaotic climate, natural disasters, the threats of terrorism and pandemics, young people need and deserve support in developing the skills that will allow them to negotiate paths to a better future. The book points to ways of supporting the development of more engaged and effective young citizens in these precarious times. In a nice modelling of the approach she advocates, the voices of children and young adults of Hayward’s own community of Christchurch, New Zealand, direct the book’s argument. The vision of an inter-dependent ecological and citizenship education offers an energetic and purposeful way of renewing our democracy. The suggested recipe of imagination, creativity and courage offers glimpses of a far better future." – Professor Joe Smith, Director at UK Royal Geographic Society, UK.Praise for the 1st edition of Children, Citizenship and Environment‘Bronwyn Hayward's magisterial book reminds us that it's not just the biosphere that is threatened through environmental degradation, but our children's imaginations as well, and hence all our future hopes. As we won't achieve sustainable human wellbeing within a flourishing biosphere without citizens who both care about sustainability and are able to act on their concerns, we need to take children seriously as political actors. Bronwyn Hayward argues that, because we cannot live sustainably when social structures and decision-making are unjust, we need to nurture young people as citizens if they are to address the wide-ranging problems we've created: dangerous environmental change, growing social inequality, an unsustainable global economy, and weakening democracies. This wonderful book should be read by all those who think today's childhoods are fine, or who think that children are unfit for democratic involvement, or that we'll get anywhere through individual action – and also by those who already understand the issues, and the importance of children's involvement in their resolution, as they will be re-inspired; in other words, by everyone.’ – William Scott, University of Bath, UK and President, UK National Association for Environmental Education‘This book is a glorious testament to fortitude, to brilliant scholarship, to the wonderful voices of children's engagement, and to real hope that the future can indeed be secure. Our job is to make it so. Bronwyn Hayward shows how we can do this through the enlightened and patient voices of tomorrow's sustainable citizens.’ – Tim O'Riordan, University of East Anglia, UK‘Bronwyn Hayward's creative masterpiece describes how we can escape the last 20 years of neo-liberal thinking and its toxic impact on our precious children today and in the future.’ – Susan St John, University of Auckland and NZ Child Poverty Action Group spokesperson‘A thoughtful and scholarly investigation of how we can create the conditions for children to become confident, participating ecological citizens, capable of collective imagination and action for a better world. There can be no more important task for the future.’ – Jeanette Fitzsimons, Co-Leader of the New Zealand Green Party and Member of Parliament 1995–2009‘Bronwyn Hayward provides a timely, thoughtful and constructive contribution to an important area of work: understanding how children can develop environmental citizenship. The generation growing up today need to be given the skills and opportunities to engage in shaping their future, rather than be expected to inherit the decisions made by adults now. Hayward makes a strong argument for community collaboration and creative imagination as some of the key ingredients.’ – Lucy Stone, climate change advisor, UNICEF, UK‘In this inspiring book Bronwyn Hayward explains how children have been left out of the political process or included in only token ways, and the potential cost of this to society. She describes how children can learn to be citizens by engaging in democratic decision-making processes in their local environments. Including children in decision-making benefits the whole of society in unexpected ways. The book is compelling reading for all those interested in the future of democracy and of the environment.’ – Russell Wills, New Zealand Children's Commissioner‘This book challenges the myths that our kids don't care about what we do as a society and where we are headed. Bronwyn Hayward shows, with alacrity and sensitivity, exactly how the new generation might determine the future. Thought-provoking, controversial and inspiring.’ – David Shearer, Leader of the New Zealand Labour Party 'written with passion and energy … conveys its thesis with great power' - Gary Clemitshaw, British Journal of Educational Studies 'a thoughtful, powerful and timely case' - Nancy Erbstein, Children, Youth and Environments 'This scholarly masterpiece … is a book full of hope that we can reunite and re-structure politics so that it is one of collective thinking, critical reasoning, compassion and reliance on each other to maintain a sustainable world. I implore everyone to read it; it is inspirational and above all crucially instructional in how we can mould the social handprint of future generations for an environmentally friendly world' – Jessica Richardson, Sherkin Comment 'Hayward takes an unequivocal stance, urging readers to adopt new practices which will better serve both children and the environment […] I recommend the book as vital reading for all who care for the next generation, the future of democracy and the planet.'Bronwyn E. Wood, Faculty of Education, Victoria University of Wellington, in New Zealand Geographer 'Hayward directs policymakers to shift the focus away from aging Baby Boomers and back to the world’s children who are most severely impacted by environmental injustice. Written in an academic style with many references to previous studies, this book must be read slowly and thoughtfully. However, the ideas presented will be worth the effort.' – Green Teacher 'This book is a gem. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines including psychology, political science, sociology and developmental economics, Bronwyn Hayward shows respect for children’s thinking and contributes to the debates about how to create processes for human flourishing. Children and the environment are clearly at the centre of her thinking and the book will delight child advocates and environmentalists. But it would be a mistake to pigeonhole this book as only a book for child advocates. It is not. Bronwyn uses children’s frames of reference embedding in multi-disciplinary theory to show adults some paths to creating sustainable development. Through her scholarship and thoughtful approach to understanding children’s worlds, she adds a different frame onto seemingly intractable problems of inequality, climate change and democratic participation in wealthy nations.' - New Zealand Sociology 'Children, Citizenship and Environment – Nurturing a democratic imagination in a changing world – is a powerful book in terms of the positions presented, questions asked and observations it makes, particularly since they are linked to actual studies involving children. There are many unique and mind-opening thoughts in this book about society today that question the essence of citizenship, how it is taught, learned and expressed.' - Jeff Thurston, Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon "Bronwyn Hayward captures the struggles of a generation whose present and future is threatened by climate change and other interrelated crises. Book SynopsisAs the first biography of Professor Herman Daly, this book provides an in-depth account of one of the leading thinkers and most widely read writers on economics, environment and sustainability.Herman Daly's economics for a full world, based on his steady-state economics, has been widely acknowledged through numerous prestigious international awards and prizes. Drawing on extensive interviews with Daly and in-depth analysis of his publications and debates, Peter Victor presents a unique insight into Daly's life from childhood to the present day, describing his intellectual development, inspirations and influence. Much of the book is devoted to a comprehensive account of Daly's foundational contributions to ecological economics. It describes how his insights and proposals have been received by economists and non-economists and the extraordinary relevance of Daly's full world economics to solving the economic problems of today and tomorrow. Innovative and timely, this booTrade Review"No one has made a larger contribution than Herman Daly to what an economics for today’s "full world" needs to encompass, and how to make the transition to a steady state of sustainable wellbeing for humans and the rest of nature. Peter Victor’s biography is compelling and truly inspirational." Robert Costanza, Vice-Chancellor’s Chair in Public Policy, Crawford School of Public Policy, The Australian National University, Australia"Vibrant, timely and thoroughly accessible, Peter Victor’s elegant new biography charts the life and work of a genuine radical. Daly's steady-state economics marked a turning point in economic thinking with revolutionary implications. From polio survivor to World Bank advisor, Victor paints a sympathetic and long overdue portrait of an extraordinary man with extraordinary ideas."Tim Jackson, Director of the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity and Professor of Sustainable Development, University of Surrey, UK"How appropriate to see a biography of one path-breaking Ecological Economist written by another! Peter Victor clearly explains Herman Daly’s contributions, showing how innovative and prescient Daly’s insights have proven to be. The personal stories that ground this book help make it an accessible entry-point into ways of considering the most challenging questions of our time. Patricia E. (Ellie) Perkins, Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, York University, Canada"A profound and captivating account of the life and ideas of Herman Daly, one of the founders of ecological economics. For Daly the economy is a subsystem of the biosphere, where economic efficiency is secondary to ecological sustainability, growth is subordinate to development, and scale and entropy rule supreme." Atif Kubursi, Department of Economics, McMaster University, Canada"I do not think it is too strong a statement to say that he should be awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. His work is that meaningful and important." Elizabeth Troutt, Department of Economics, University of Manitoba, Canada"He is one of the clearest and most succinct thinkers and writers to whom I have been exposed to, posing issues of great complexity with enormous skill and simplicity." Peter May, Institute of Economics, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil"Herman was instrumental in shaping my views on all the work that I now do… Truly a kind, gentle man of enormous courage and wisdom. I revere him and cherish the times I have had with him. He deserves the Nobel, but so much more." L.Hunter Lovins, President of Natural Capitalism Solutions, Longmont, Colorado, USA"Looking for alternative approaches to the economics of natural resources, I found a light in Herman Daly’s publications."Alejandra Saravia, Researcher and Assistant Professor, Universidad Mayor de San Simon, Cochabamba, Bolivia"Herman deserves a biography as he has inspired so many who question an endless growth economy!"Haydn Washington, Environmental scientist, writer and activist, PANGEA Research Unit, UNSW, Australia"He deserves to be recognized as one of the great economists of our time."Anders Hayden, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Dalhousie University, Canada"This man is a giant in an age of midgets. The best of the kind of southern gentlemen. A visionary in an age blinded by its own arrogance; drunk on a superficial idea of progress. We should all thank god for sending this man among us."Peter Brown, Professor, Bieler School of Environment/Natural Resource Sciences/Geography, McGill University, Montreal, Canada"As a snooty physical scientist, I dismissed economics as shallow. Daly has converted me to appreciating how deep a subject it is." Robert Herendeen, Gund Affiliate, Adjunct Professor, Rubenstein School for the Environment and Natural Resources, University of Vermont, USA"Peter Victor's biography of Herman Daly is a worthy read for all who have been influenced by Daly's ideas. Book SynopsisMultinational Enterprise and Transnational Regions offers an innovative approach to the study of the history of transnational economic regions. The Rhine valley is such a region comprising the cities and areas along the Rhine river and its tributaries. The transition from coal to oil that unfolded between 1945 and 1973 rapidly transformed the region, shattering some of the old river-based connections and creating new ones with the introduction of large-scale cross-border oil pipelines. Multinational enterprises shaped these new regional connections but divergent national government responses gave rise to differentiated development in different parts of the Rhine valley. Multinational Enterprise and Transnational Regions argues that processes of regional change should be understood from transnational interconnections rather than from local or national perspectives. This book uses a transnational business history methodology to tease out the regionâs transformation and to circumvent the national bias in public sources. Book SynopsisAround the world the focus is on the relationship between ethics and governance codes and how widely this should be interpreted. Sustainability has three main accepted dimensions: economic growth, social responsibility, and environmental protection. It is a truly multidimensional and multidisciplinary concept, and one which directly affects the risks and opportunities for markets and businesses. In three distinct parts, Sustainable Markets for Sustainable Business explores the relationship between markets and business and sustainable development, as well as issues such as climate change, pollution, land degradation and biodiversity loss. Firstly the authors, all experts from around the world, consider a variety of theoretical issues concerned with sustainability in the new environment. In Part Two the emphasis is on looking at these issues in the market and business practice under various guises. Although every chapter contains discussion and recommended solutions, the final part specTrade Review’Professor Aras has tackled the very timely subject of business sustainability. Book Synopsis#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe.Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet''s slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal.He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.
