Verlag Peter Lang Werkstatt-Spuren: Die Sonatine Von Pierre Boulez:

McFarland & Co Inc The Turn to Gruesomeness in American Horror Films
Book Synopsis Critics have traditionally characterized classic horror by its use of shadow and suggestion. Yet the graphic nature of early 1930s films only came to light in the home video/DVD era. Along with gangster movies and sex pictures, horror films drew audiences during the Great Depression with sensational content. Exploiting a loophole in the Hays Code, which made no provision for on-screen gruesomeness, studios produced remarkably explicit films that were recut when the Code was more rigidly enforced from 1934. This led to a modern misperception that classic horror was intended to be safe and reassuring to audiences. The author examines the 1931 to 1936 happy ending horror in relation to industry practices and censorship. Early works like Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) and The Raven (1935) may be more akin to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and Hostel (2005) than many critics believe.

McFarland & Co Inc Nora Ephron
Book Synopsis Nora Ephron famously claimed that she wrote about every thought that ever crossed her mind, from her divorce from Carl Bernstein (Heartburn) to the size of her breasts (A Few Words About Breasts). She also wrote screenplays for three of the most successful contemporary romantic comedies--When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You''ve Got Mail (1998). Often considered mere light-hearted romantic comedies, her screenwriting has not been the subject of serious study. This book offers a sustained critical analysis of her work and life and demonstrates that Ephron is no lightweight. The complexity of her work is explored through the context of her childhood in a deeply dysfunctional family of writers.

McFarland & Company The Kaiju Film A Critical Study of Cinemas
Book SynopsisThe Kaiju (strange monster) film genre has a number of themes that go well beyond the “big monsters stomping on cities” motif. This examination of kaiju considers the entirety of the genre. The author examines how kaiju has crossed cultures from its original folkloric inspirations and how the genre reflects national values to audiences.Trade ReviewJason Barr’s lively and fun study (subtitled ‘A critical study of the cinema’s biggest monsters’) is both an enthusiastic celebration of an often despised genre, written with both a fan’s indulgence and a scholar’s hard-core grasp of information. Ambitiously, Barr is not content to simply tackle the Japanese variety of destructive behemoth, but adduces American films such as the remarkable Kronos, with its bizarre Cubist-inspired robot machine and the much-loved British film Gorgo, with the title monster’s mother, no less, laying waste to such London landmarks as Tower Bridge. For aficionados of the genre, this is splendid stuff." - DVD Choices, July 2016

McFarland & Co Inc Why The Monkees Matter
Book Synopsis A hit television show about a fictitious rock band, The Monkees (1966-1968) earned two Emmys--Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy. Capitalizing on the show''s success, the actual band formed by the actors, at their peak, sold more albums than The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined, and set the stage for other musical TV characters from The Partridge Family to Hannah Montana. In the late 1980s, the Monkees began a series of reunion tours that continued into their 50th anniversary. This book tells the story of The Monkees and how the show changed television, introducing a new generation to the fourth-wall-breaking slapstick created by Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers. Its creators contributed to the innovative film and television of 1970s with projects like Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Laugh-In and Welcome Back, Kotter. Immense prof

McFarland & Company Ukrainian Dance
Book Synopsis Ukrainian dance is remarkably enduring in its popularity and still performed in numerous cultural contexts. This text unpacks the complex world of this ethnic dance, with special attention to the differences between vival dance (which requires being fully engaged in the present moment) and reflective dance (dance connected explicitly to the past). Most Ukrainian vival dances have been performed by peasants in traditional village settings, for recreational and ritual purposes. Reflective Ukrainian dances are performed more self-consciously as part of a living heritage. Further sub-groups are examined, including national dances, recreational/educational dances, and spectacular dances on stage.

Also analyzed are his film persona and the curious mechanisms by which our culture selects certain film personalities to remember and others to forget. Featured is a wealth of biographical material never before available, including rare candid photos of William''s early years. Taschen GmbH Bob Willoughby. Audrey Hepburn. Photographs
Book SynopsisIn his distinguished career as a Hollywood photographer, Bob Willoughby captured Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda, but remains unequivocal about his favorite subject: Audrey Kathleen Ruston, later Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston, best known as Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby was called in to shoot the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. “She took my hand like… well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men’s hearts,” he recalled. As Hepburn’s career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn’s beauty and elegance, as she progresses from her debut to her career high of My Fair Lady in 1963. Willoughby’s studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, comprise one of photography’s great platonic love affairs and an unrivalled record of one of the 20th century’s touchstone beauties.Trade ReviewWith one of Hollywood's greatest studio photographers behind the camera-and its most beautiful actress in front of it-Bob Willoughby's picture-perfect Audrey Hepburn book is a real collector's item. * Sunday Express *
