  • Vaulting Ambition: Jamaica’s Barn Theatre 1966

Peepal Tree Press Ltd Vaulting Ambition: Jamaica’s Barn Theatre 1966

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisFor more almost forty years, Jamaica’s Barn Theatre was a crucial part of the development of a Caribbean theatre that extended beyond the Europhile elite. When it began in 1965, there were scarcely any plays written by Caribbean playwrights to perform. By its presence The Barn encouraged the work of dramatists such as Dennis Scott, Ashani Harrison and Carmen Tipling, and above all the work of Trevor Rhone, with whom Yvonne Brewster enjoyed a close if sometimes tumultuous theatrical relationship.Yvonne Brewster's splendid retelling of the making of the Barn captures the phenomenon of youthful ambition, creative optimism and rollicking intellectual excitement that characterized the spirit of young people fired with the zeal of imagining a postcolonial self as distinct from a colonized self. The men and women who started the Barn were shaped by Jamaica’s independence or the idea of it, though their spirit was as much shaped by the giddy youth culture of the sixties blossoming in London, where some were trained, as by developments in Jamaica where ska, reggae and Rasta were coming together in a not always lucid mix to create a sense of possibility. As much as it is an invaluable record of the plays performed in the context of a changing Jamaican society, Vaulting Ambition is an engaging and affectionate account of the sometimes larger than life personalities who were involved and the often difficult material circumstances in which theatre was made. Above all, the memoir gives us the inimitable voice of Yvonne Brewster, raconteur extraordinaire.

Book SynopsisPeter Krämer is a Senior Fellow in the School of Art, Media and American Studies at the University of East Anglia, UK. He is the author and editor of eight academic books, among them The New Hollywood: From Bonnie and Clyde to Star Wars (2005) and the BFI Film Classic on 2001: A Space Odyssey (2010).Yannis Tzioumakis is Reader in Film and Media Industries at the University of Liverpool, UK. He is the author of four books, most recently of American Independent Cinema: An Introduction, 2nd edition (2017) and co-editor of four collections of essays, most recently of The Routledge Companion to Cinema and Politics (2016).Trade ReviewKrämer and Tzioumakis present 13 thoughtful, concise essays ... The Hollywood Renaissance adds to previous studies by cogently placing each film within the larger industrial, cultural, and sociopolitical context of US cinema. * CHOICE *Launches compelling new perspectives on 'American cinema's most celebrated era' ... The Hollywood Renaissance’s corps of contributors ensures a high overall quality. Each chapter, organized chronologically around a single ?lm, delivers perspicacious analysis. Methodologies vary, but always to pro?table effect. * The Year's Work in Critical and Cultural Theory *Foregrounding form, style, and content, not only do Tzioumakis and Krämer privilege these themes as the central philosophy at the heart of American cinema’s new generation of filmmakers in the 1960s and early ‘70s (writers, designers and producers as well as directors), they offer us a collection of essays that are formative and stylish in their own right. Assembling some of the best scholars for the task, The Hollywood Renaissance is less an exercise in nostalgic remembrance and much more a persuasive and brilliant updating of the reasons why this coterie of filmmakers, and this era, continues to matter today. Superbly conceived and wonderfully realised throughout every chapter, if you want to know what made the Hollywood Renaissance the creative force it was, and the overriding influence it continues to be, this book has all the answers. Quite simply, Indispensable. * Ian Scott, Senior Lecturer in American Studies, University of Manchester, UK *The Hollywood Renaissance digs deep and goes wide to change dramatically the way we think about this much-studied, legendary period of American filmmaking. Instead of emphasizing the auteurist approach of previous studies, this marvelous volume emphasizes the overlooked element of collaboration among filmmakers in a multi-faceted industrial context that produced landmark titles such as Bonnie and Clyde but also included significant if less-studied films such as Funny Girl and Lady Sings the Blues. The result is a volume full of lively, always enlightening new essays into a celebrated period fifty years on. * Matthew H. Bernstein, Goodrich C. Book SynopsisIn 1971, Michael Blakemore joined the National Theatre as Associate Director under Laurence Olivier. The National, still based at the Old Vic, was at a moment of transition awaiting the move to its vast new home on the South Bank. Relying on generous subsidy, it would need an extensive network of supporters in high places. Olivier, a scrupulous and brilliant autocrat from a previous generation, was not the man to deal with these political ramifications. His tenure began to unravel and, behind his back, Peter Hall was appointed to replace him in 1973. As in other aspects of British life, the ethos of public service, which Olivier espoused, was in retreat. Having staged eight productions for the National, Blakemore found himself increasingly uncomfortable under Hall''s regime. Stage Blood is the candid and at times painfully funny story of the events that led to his dramatic exit in 1976. He recalls the theatrical triumphs and flops, his volatile relationship with Olivier incl

It is the sound of isolation that has sold itself to millions.''Miles Davis''s Kind of Blue is the best selling piece of music in the history of jazz, and for many listeners among the most haunting in all of twentieth-century music. It is also, notoriously, the only jazz album many people own. Recorded in 1959 (in nine miraculous hours), there has been nothing like it since. Its atmosphere - slow, dark, meditative, luminous - became all-pervasive for a generation, and has remained the epitome of melancholy coolness ever since.Richard Williams has written a history of the album which for once does not rip it out of its wider cultural context. He evokes the essence of the music - identifying the qualities that make it so uniquely appealing - while making effortless connections to painting, literature, philosophy and poetry. This makes for an elegant, graceful and beautifully-written narrative.

Book Synopsis Claire Trevor (1910-2000) is best remembered as the alluring blonde femme fatale in such iconic noir films as Murder, My Sweet (1944) and Raw Deal (1948). Yet she was a versatile performer who brought rare emotional depth to her art. She was effective in a range of diverse roles, from an outcast prostitute in John Ford''s classic Stagecoach (1939) to the ambitious tennis mother in Hard, Fast and Beautiful (1951) to the embittered wife of a landowner in William Wellman''s overlooked gem My Man and I (1952). Nominated for three Oscars, she deservedly won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Gaye Dawn, a gangster''s broken-down moll in Key Largo (1948). The author covers her life and career in detail, recognizing her as one of the finest actresses of her generation.

Book SynopsisSometimes pianists would love to play the 'pops' they enjoy, but finding quality arrangements that work for the instrument can be a real challenge. The author takes classic film songs from across the decades and makes well-crafted and satisfying arrangements for intermediate pianists.Trade ReviewThe arrangements are satisfyingly effective, and provide ideal browsing/alternative material for the older teenager or adult learner. Piano Professional, Spring 2009 This is a stupendous collection of 28 film classics arranged for piano solo, ranging from Lawrence of Arabia to Pirates of the Caribbean, The Magnificent Seven to Ghostbusters, Harry Potter to The Exorcist and Chariots of Fire to The English Patient. I have to say that once I started playing, I could not stop. The same thing happened when I gave the book to a reluctant sight reader for some quick practice; i had to shut it and promise more later. Certain films and film music tend to evoke times and occasions in our lives and as my pupil and I played through our favourites we recalled the film and the circumstances under which we had seen it. She also commented that each arrangement 'worked' and sounded genuine. The writing of some were more richly orchestral (Gladiator and Blade Runner), others were just fun (The Flintstones and the James Bond Theme). The arrangements are approximately Grade 3-6 standard and satisfyingly, they all sound absolutely true to the originals. There is something for every pianist here. While it is important and rewarding to master playing all styles of music and none should be neglected, pieces in popular styles are useful, in that they very often engage the struggling pupil, give street cred to the teenager and provide relaxation and enjoyment to pianists of all ages. The very best will give both pleasure and progress. Music Teacher, January 2009 Arranged for intermediate piano solo, this is as fine a compendium of good tunes for the flowering learner (or terminal intermediate) as any available. Mi Pro Magazine, June 2008Table of ContentsLord Of The Rings (Main Theme: The Ring Goes South); Star Wars (Imperial March Theme); Gladiator (Main Theme: The Battle); Harry Potter (Hedwig's Theme); Chariots of Fire (Main Theme); The Lion King (Song: Circle Of Life); The Great Escape (Main Theme); The English Patient (Main Theme); The Deer Hunter (Theme: Cavatina); Blade Runner (Main Theme): Dances With Wolves (Main Theme); James Bond (Main Theme); James Bond (Goldfinger theme); The Exorcist (Theme: Tubular Bells); The Mission (Theme: Gabriel's Oboe); Lawrence Of Arabia (Main Theme); Midnight Cowboy (Main Theme); Superman (Main Theme); Ghostbusters (Song: Ghostbusters); Batman (Main Theme); The Flintstones (Main Theme); The Wizard Of Oz (Over The Rainbow); Rocky (Main Theme); The Magnificent Seven (Main Theme); American Beauty (Theme: Any Other Name); Pirates Of The Caribbean ('He's A Pirate'); Cinema Paradiso (Main Theme); Jean de Florette (Verdi - La Forza Del Destino)

Book SynopsisIn the mid-1980s the Happy Mondays emerged as the prime mischief makers on the Madchester scene. Chief protagonist was Shaun Ryder, a man whose lyrical street swagger in songs like Kinky Afro, 24 Hour Party People and Performance, would come to define a generation. Here, collected and edited for the first time, in trade and special editions, are his unforgettable lyrics with commentary by the man himself and an introduction by his literary collaborator, Luke Bainbridge. With characteristic understatement, Tony Wilson once compared Shaun William Ryder's lyrics to the poetry of W. B. Yeats. That is, if W. B. Yeats had been an inveterate drug-taker and occasional dealer, a compatriot of criminals and crazies, an aficionado of low life and high times; if he had painted artful sketches of endless parties and urban blight, of chancers, dead beats, fanatics and, always, an endless stream of pharmaceuticals; if W. B. Yeats had composed fractured, hilarious, grubby and shrewdly observ

Book SynopsisShaun Ryder has lived a life of glorious highs and desolate lows. As lead singer of the Happy Mondays, he turned Manchester into Madchester, combining all the excesses of a true rock''n''roll star with music and lyrics that led impresario Tony Wilson to describe him as ''the greatest poet since Yeats''. The young scally who left school at fifteen without ever learning his alphabet had come a very long way indeed. Huge chart success and a Glastonbury headline slot followed, plus numerous arrests and world tours - then Shaun''s drug addiction reached its height, Factory Records was brought to its knees and the Mondays split. But was this the end for Shaun Ryder? Not by a long shot. Two years later he was back with new band Black Grape, and their groundbreaking debut album topped the charts in possibly the greatest comeback of all time. Even his continuing struggle with drugs did not stem the tide of critically acclaimed tracks and collaborations as he went on to prove his musical genius time and again. And then there was the jungle...Rock''n''roll legend, reality TV star, drug-dealer, poet, film star, heroin addict, son, brother, father, husband, foul-mouthed anthropologist and straight-talking survivor, Shaun Ryder has been a cultural icon and a 24-hour party person for a quarter of a century. Told in his own words, this is his story.Trade ReviewIntoxicating: swaggering, cringing, furious, vulnerable, chaotic, bilious, funny, mad.
