The author focuses on the musicians and composers who received Stalin Prizes, awarded annually to artists whose work was thought to represent the best in Soviet culture. This revealing study sheds new light on the Communist leader's personal tastes, the lives and careers of those honored, including multiple-recipients Prokofiev and Shostakovich, and the elusive artistic concept of Socialist Realism, offering the most comprehensive examination to date of the relationship between music and the Soviet state from 1940 through 1954.Trade Review“A great attraction of the book is the wit and enthusiasm that suffuse its tone. . . A thoroughly engaging style as well as a consummate mastery in handling archival materials makes this book as enjoyable a read for a wide audience as it is indispensable for specialists.”—Michelle Assay, SEER 'Frolova-Walker’s study of the Stalin Prize is permeated with the joy of discovery. Although the subject is tremendous, since it deals with the machinations of power under a dictatorial regime, the author delights in what she calls time travelling and eavesdropping. Taylor & Francis Ltd If Its Purple Someones Gonna Die
Book SynopsisIf It's Purple, Someone's Gonna Die is a must-read book for all film students, film professionals, and others interested in filmmaking. This enlightening book guides filmmakers toward making the right color selections for their films, and helps movie buffs understand why they feel the way they do while watching movies that incorporate certain colors. Guided by her twenty-five years of research on the effects of color on behavior, Bellantoni has grouped more than 60 films under the spheres of influence of six major colors, each of which triggers very specific emotional states. For example, the author explains that films with a dominant red influence have themes and characters that are powerful, lusty, defiant, anxious, angry, or romantic and discusses specific films as examples. She explores each film, describing how, why, and where a color influences emotions, both in the characters on screen and in the audience. Each color section begins with an illustrated Home Page that includes examples, anecdotes, and tips for using or avoiding that particular color.Conversations with the author's colleagues - including award-winning production designers Henry Bumstead (Unforgiven) and Wynn Thomas (Malcolm X) and renowned cinematographers Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption) and Edward Lachman (Far From Heaven) - reveal how color is often used to communicate what is not said. Bellantoni uses her research and experience to demonstrate how powerful color can be and to increase readers awareness of the colors around us and how they make us feel, act, and react. Learn how your choice of color can influence an audience's moods, attitudes, reactions, and interpretations of your movie's plot. See your favorite films in a new light as the author points out important uses of color, both instinctive and intentional. Learn how to make good color choices, in your film and in your world. Trade Review"Patti Bellantoni's If Its Purple, Someones Gonna Die has given us a highly entertaining exploration of the world of color and its impact on our emotions. Told through a careful analysis of motion pictures that have used color to enhance or define their characters or dramatic needs, we are given a lively and insightful view of our reactions to the film experience.Leading us gently but firmly through places we may have taken for granted, we find revelations that can be of real help to readers who use color to shape emotional responses to concepts, as well as physical environments. We can never again take theworld of color for granted." --Robert Boyle, four-time Oscar-nominated Production Designer (North by Northwest, The Birds, The Thomas Crown Affair, Fiddler on the Roof)"A wonderful idea and very impressive! Patti's book shows the importance of color in developing both character and story." --Henry Bumstead, two-time Oscar-winning Production Designer (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sting, Unforgiven, Mystic River)"We see color--Patti Bellantoni feels color. She is passionate about how we (the audience) are affected by the use of color as an emotion in film. This book pulls me back into my favorite films and helps me look at them in a new way. The book is a first of its kind and a great asset for our students on the impact of cinematography and production design." --Judy Irola, ASC, Head of Cinematography,USC School of Cinema-Television"Bellantoni's evidence is confident and her examples are authoritative. Like Robert McKee's Story Seminars, hers is a breakthrough concept." --Sam L. Grogg, Ph.D, Dean, AFI Conservatory"There comes a point, as Bellantoni spins example after example, where it all suddenly clicks. The use of color in motion pictures is not just a happy coincidence, but a conscious artistic choice that wafts with concrete meaning through all of the film's language. Unconscious and primitive in many respects, conscious and sophisticated in many more, the use and choice of color in motion pictures depends on the filmmakers instinct and intellect, the pillars of all great art. No one can ever look at moving pictures the same way after steeping themselves in this excellent book of discovery."--Sam L. Hachette Books Easy Street the Hard Way
Book SynopsisThe engaging, passionate, always-honest, and often-hilarious memoir of actor Ron Perlman--his triumphant story of perseverance and determination navigating the slippery slopes of Hollywood, with a foreword by Guillermo del Toro Ron Perlman was a kid who had a myriad of self-image issues, yet he triumphed in an industry that trades on image and self-confidence. He landed a leading role in Quest for Fire. He won a Golden Globe for Beauty and the Beast. And he played the title role in two Hellboy movies, becoming along the way an icon among sci-fi and comic book fans worldwide. Although his name may be unknown to some, most people know Ron Perlman''s face, despite the fact that for nearly half his career he''s been disguised under feature-altering foam-rubber prosthetics. On his offbeat path to success, Ron has amassed nearly 200 stage, TV, voiceover, and major motion picture credits, including roles in Drive, Pacific Rim, and a six-year gig as the badass biker boss Clay Morrow in Sons of Anarchy. In Easy Street (the Hard Way), Ron shares his life story, starting with his up-by-your-bootstraps background in New York''s Washington Heights. His father, a Swing Era drummer, gave up his dream in order to feed his sons while his mother worked as a municipal clerk. Ron''s hard-earned road to Easy Street included bouts of abject poverty, heartbreaking familial episodes, and a long, often uncomfortable struggle for self-acceptance. He sheds light on his life as a working actor and also offers behind-the-scenes insight into the working styles of internationally famous directors, including Jean-Jacques Annaud, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy and Academy Award-winning Pan''s Labyrinth). He provides his own peek into Hollywood, up close and personal, where he has encountered the likes of Marlon Brando, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and others. Plus, he turns his eye on the trajectory of American culture--the good and the bad--as observed by a man who started out in a mom-and-pop world where the arts were disseminated by individuals rather than corporations.Easy Street (the Hard Way) will inspire anyone who has ever dared to dream and offers a roadmap to the next generation of dreamers.

Lexington Books Opera as Art
Book SynopsisIn Opera as Art: Philosophical Sketches, Paul Thom argues for opera as an art, standing alongside other artforms that employ visual and sonic media to embody the great themes of human life. Thom contends that in great operatic art, the narrative and expressive content collaborate with the work''s aesthetic qualities towards achieving this aim. This argument can be extended to modern operatic productions. At their best, these stagings are works of art in themselves, whether they give faithful renditions of the operas they stage and whether their aims go beyond interpretation to commentary and critique. This book is a philosophical introduction to the key practices that comprise the world of opera: the making of the work; its interpretation by directors, critics, and spectators; and the making of an operatic production. Opera has always existed in a context of philosophical ideas, and this book is written for opera-lovers who would like to learn something about that philosophical context.

Lexington Books Sing Romantic Music Romantically
Book SynopsisThere is a paucity of material regarding how choral music specifically was performed in the 1800s. The Historically Informed Performance (HIP) movement has made remarkable advancements in choral music of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods, with modest forays into the music of Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and other early nineteenth-century composers; however, there are no sources with a comprehensive examination of how choral music was performed. Using more than one-hundred musical examples, illustrations, tables, and photographs and relying on influential, contemporaneous sources, David Friddle details the performance practices of the time, including expressive devices such as articulation, ornamentation, phrasing, tempo, and vibrato, along with an in-depth discussion of period pronunciation, instruments, and orchestral/choral placement. Sing Romantic Music Romantically: Nineteenth-Century Choral Performance Practices fills a gap in choral scholarship and moves forward our knowledge of how choral music sounded and was performed in the nineteenth century. The depth of research and abundance of source material makes this work a must-have for choral professionals everywhere.

It is an important book for students and lovers of Iranian cinema. -- Roxanne Varzi, University of California, Irvine In Reform Cinema in Iran, Atwood masterfully captures the complex and paradoxical relations between filmmaking and the desire for reconfigurations of the revolution's objectives. Particularly significant is his analysis of how film as a medium and new technologies of representation were instrumental in setting the terms of the reform movement. An important contribution to the study of Iranian cinema and contemporary Iran's cultural production. -- Nasrin Rahimieh, University of California, Irvine Reform Cinema is not only an essential book for institutions that teach Iranian cinema, but also a very valuable source for those studying the reform movement's place in Iranian history. Columbia University Press Feasting Our Eyes
Book SynopsisFeasting Our Eyes takes a second look at modern American food films to emphasize their conventional approaches to nation, gender, race, sexuality, and social status. Devoured visually and emotionally, these films are particularly effective defenders of the status quo.Trade ReviewIn Feasting Our Eyes: Food Films and Cultural Identity in the United States, Laura Lindenfeld and Fabio Parasecoli offer a comprehensive study of food films. They frame their discussion around multiple themes that connect food films to identity formation in the United States including race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. It is an essential read for all interested in the intersections of food, media, and identity. -- Peter Naccarato, co-author of Edible Ideologies: Representing Food and Meaning Feasting Our Eyes offers a thorough and thoughtful examination of food films at the nexus of consumption and citizenship. Lindenfeld & Parasecoli authoritatively argue that food films, although apparently progressive, in fact reinforce the very cultural and social dynamics they wish to critique. Decisive and taut, the book is a must-read. -- Kathleen LeBesco, author of Revolting Bodies? The Struggle to Redefine Fat Identity Feasting Our Eyes is a marvel. From the indie classic Babette's Feast to Disney's blockbuster Ratatouille, Lindenfeld and Parasecoli map the origins and evolution of American food films, revealing their ability to reflect and shape our corporeal, emotional, and gustatory desires. -- Amy Bentley, author of Inventing Baby Food: Taste, Health and the Industrialization of the American Diet Feasting Our Eyes offers an engaging new perspective on "food films," and how they are often as interesting for what they omit as what they include when it comes to representations of cultural identity. Highly recommended reading. -- Signe Rousseau, author of Food and Social Media: You Are What You Tweet Going beyond the obvious "good to eat, good to watch" analysis, Lindenfeld and Parasecoli offer both close-up and wide angle views on food and film, consolidating their considerable expertise to explore the aspirations and contradictions in American cinema. From Big Night to Ratatoille to Food, Inc, the authors unpack visual narratives to show how the desire for belonging in multicultural nations is often at odds with the commodification of authenticity and identity. This is one of the very few books to capture the complications of pleasure and oppression, particularly by noting the absence of labor and the need for reconciliatory, successful happy endings, where food soothes the challenges and disruptions to gender, race, and class hierarchies through consumption. -- Alice Julier, author of Eating Together: Food, Friendship, and InequalityTable of ContentsIllustrations Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Book SynopsisThe versatile philosopher synthesizes the thought of four thinkers into a global ethics for peace.Trade ReviewEarth and World will make a superb contribution to environmental and continental ethics, and will be widely read and taught in continental philosophy as an anchor text for growing interest in rethinking response ethics in the context of environmental and interspecies ethics. -- Cynthia Willett, Emory University Not only does Oliver take up the ontological question concerning the meaning of earth and world, she also fully engages the social, political, and ethical dimensions of this relationship. This is an excellent book, well-composed, provocative at times, far-reaching in its implications, and enduringly relevant to current issues and concerns. -- Brian Schroeder, Rochester Institute of Technology Oliver connects Heidegger's pivotal distinction between Earth and World to deliberations on cosmopolitanism from Kant to Arendt and Derrida and to thinking earth as the sustaining ground of not-just-human life. Drawing effortlessly on film and popular culture, this is a brilliant, lucid, and highly readable companion to the End Times. -- David Wood, Vanderbilt University In her brilliant new book, Oliver demonstrates precisely why philosophy could never be the same 'after the Apollo Missions.' She explores in an absolutely lucid and compelling way the ethical challenges and opportunities that emerged at the moment our planet-our environment, our home-was seen from outer space as that 'blue marble.' -- Michael Naas, DePaul University Highly recommended. Book SynopsisExplores the cultural dynamics of this ancient form of Sanskrit theater.Kuiyaam, an ancient form of Sanskrit theater from Kerala, was traditionally performed only in temples by members of two temple assistant castes. Today, however, it has spread to other castes and to venues outside temples. It is a fantastically complex, sophisticated, layered performance, toiling at amassing and perfecting ways of materializing a world where gods, demons, and mythical heroes live, bringing the audience into these other realities. Taking an anthropological approach, Awakening a Living World on a Kuiyaam Stage explores how Kuiyaam uses cultural dynamics, gleaned from temple ritual and theater, to remove the distinctions between mundane reality and the mediaeval plays being performed on stage. The unique features of Kuiyaam-makeup masks, enthralling drumming, delivering words in mudra gestures, a shimmering lamp, male and female actors-all intertwine to animate stories from the great Indian eposes. Analyzing the cultural dynamics at work in Kuiyaam foregrounds a symbolic anthropology in which representation and symbols are shunned, while endless repetitions fill the stage with reverberating somatic intensities of profound depth. Thus, a new kind of living reality emerges that includes the protagonists of the play-gods, demons, humans, animals, and objects-together with the artist, the audience, and beyond.

Oxford University Press Shakespeare and Science
Book SynopsisAs a figurehead for the literary humanities, and a dramatist whose plays feature fairies, ghosts, and spirits, Shakespeare may not be the first author that comes to mind when thinking about science. Tom Rutter shows, however, that in his plays and poetry Shakespeare made detailed use of the knowledge and theories of the cosmos, the natural world, and human biology that were available to him. These range from astronomical and anatomical ideas derived from medieval scholars, Islamic philosophers, and ancient Greek and Roman authorities, through to the challenges issued to those earlier models by more recent figures such as Copernicus and Vesalius. Shakespeare''s treatment of these materials was informed by the poetic and dramatic media in which he worked; the dialogic nature of drama enabled an approach that could be provisional, exploratory, and tolerant of uncertainty and contradiction. Shakespeare made the early modern playhouse a venue for the production of scientific understanding t

HarperCollins Publishers Undressing Emmanuelle A memoir
Book SynopsisThe candid and heartbreakingly honest memoir of Sylvia Kristel, the cinema icon of the 1970s who played the lead role in the worldwide sensation erotic Emmanuelle films.Trade Review'Far from being seedy, this is an elegantly written book. The prose is simple, evocative and highly readable. I found myself wishing that our home-grown celebrities would write books full of ideas and feelings, not glossy magazine therapy-speak. A few of her highly stylised sentences tell far more about the whys and wherefores of exposure and fame than all the trash clogging the bestseller lists of late.' Belle de Jour, The Times 'This is a poignant, semi-intentionally hilarious autobiography. Her story is gripping.' Sunday Times 'A remarkable memoir. A series of impressionistic snapshots, delivered in austere, melancholic prose, it is quite unlike other show-biz memoirs and its candour is raw. Sylvia is a cult icon, she loosened our inhibitions. But the price was high.' Bridget Hourican The Gloss Magazine

In Gandolfini, critic and historian Jason Bailey traces the twinned stories of the man and the unforgettable roles he played. Gandolfini’s roots were working class, raised in northern New Jersey as the son of Italian immigrants, and acting was something he loved for a long time before he could see it as a career.
