  • The Essential Film Collection

Faber Music Ltd The Essential Film Collection

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisSometimes pianists would love to play the 'pops' they enjoy, but finding quality arrangements that work for the instrument can be a real challenge. The author takes classic film songs from across the decades and makes well-crafted and satisfying arrangements for intermediate pianists.Trade ReviewThe arrangements are satisfyingly effective, and provide ideal browsing/alternative material for the older teenager or adult learner. Piano Professional, Spring 2009 This is a stupendous collection of 28 film classics arranged for piano solo, ranging from Lawrence of Arabia to Pirates of the Caribbean, The Magnificent Seven to Ghostbusters, Harry Potter to The Exorcist and Chariots of Fire to The English Patient. I have to say that once I started playing, I could not stop. The same thing happened when I gave the book to a reluctant sight reader for some quick practice; i had to shut it and promise more later. Certain films and film music tend to evoke times and occasions in our lives and as my pupil and I played through our favourites we recalled the film and the circumstances under which we had seen it. She also commented that each arrangement 'worked' and sounded genuine. The writing of some were more richly orchestral (Gladiator and Blade Runner), others were just fun (The Flintstones and the James Bond Theme). The arrangements are approximately Grade 3-6 standard and satisfyingly, they all sound absolutely true to the originals. There is something for every pianist here. While it is important and rewarding to master playing all styles of music and none should be neglected, pieces in popular styles are useful, in that they very often engage the struggling pupil, give street cred to the teenager and provide relaxation and enjoyment to pianists of all ages. The very best will give both pleasure and progress. Music Teacher, January 2009 Arranged for intermediate piano solo, this is as fine a compendium of good tunes for the flowering learner (or terminal intermediate) as any available. Mi Pro Magazine, June 2008Table of ContentsLord Of The Rings (Main Theme: The Ring Goes South); Star Wars (Imperial March Theme); Gladiator (Main Theme: The Battle); Harry Potter (Hedwig's Theme); Chariots of Fire (Main Theme); The Lion King (Song: Circle Of Life); The Great Escape (Main Theme); The English Patient (Main Theme); The Deer Hunter (Theme: Cavatina); Blade Runner (Main Theme): Dances With Wolves (Main Theme); James Bond (Main Theme); James Bond (Goldfinger theme); The Exorcist (Theme: Tubular Bells); The Mission (Theme: Gabriel's Oboe); Lawrence Of Arabia (Main Theme); Midnight Cowboy (Main Theme); Superman (Main Theme); Ghostbusters (Song: Ghostbusters); Batman (Main Theme); The Flintstones (Main Theme); The Wizard Of Oz (Over The Rainbow); Rocky (Main Theme); The Magnificent Seven (Main Theme); American Beauty (Theme: Any Other Name); Pirates Of The Caribbean ('He's A Pirate'); Cinema Paradiso (Main Theme); Jean de Florette (Verdi - La Forza Del Destino)

Book Synopsis‘When I first heard about this Faith No More biography, I didn’t know what to think. But I have to give credit where it is due, it’s a quality piece. The man has done his research and it shows. It provided me with more than a few revelations … and I’m in the band.’ – Bill Gould, Faith No MoreSmall Victories: The True Story of Faith No More is the definitive biography of one of the most intriguing bands of the late twentieth century. Written with the participation of the group’s key members, it tells how such a heterogeneous group formed, flourished, and fractured, and how Faith No More helped redefine rock, metal and alternative music. The book chronicles the creative and personal tensions that defined and fuelled the band, forensically examines the band’s beginnings in San Francisco’s post-punk wasteland, and charts the factors behind the group’s ascent to MTV-era stardom.Small Victories strips away the mythology and misinformation behind their misanthropic masterpiece Angel Dust, explores the rationale behind the frequent hiring and firing of band members, and traces the unraveling of the band in the mid-1990s. It also examines the band’s breakup and hiatus, explores their unwelcome legacy as nu-metal godfathers, and gives a behind-the-scenes view of their rebirth.Based on meticulous research and hundreds of interviews with current and former band members and other key figures, Small Victories combines a fan’s passion with a reporter’s perspicacity.

Bonnier Books Ltd Whatever Happened to the C86 Kids?: An Indie

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis'You will love this book.' - RICHARD OSMAN Shortlisted for the Penderyn Music Book PrizeA Rough Trade Book of the YearA Resident Book of the YearA Monorail Book of the YearA Virgin Radio Book of the YearIn 1986, the NME released a cassette that would shape music for years to come. A collection of twenty-two independently signed guitar-based bands, C86 was the sound and ethos that defined a generation. It was also arguably the point at which 'indie' was born. But what happened next to all those musical dreamers? Some of the bands, like Primal Scream, went on to achieve global stardom; others, such as Half Man Half Biscuit and The Wedding Present, cultivated lifelong fanbases that still sustain their careers today. Then there were the rest - the ones who endured general indifference from the record-buying public and ultimately returned to civvy street. Now, thirty-five years on, journalist Nige Tassell tracks down the class of C86, unearthing members of all twenty-two bands and sharing the stories, both tragic and uplifting, of these long-lost musicians.Told with warmth, compassion and humour, this is a very human account of ambition, hope, varying degrees of talent and what happens after you give up on music - or, more accurately, after music gives up on you. It's a world populated by bike-shop owners, dance-music producers, record-store proprietors, ornithologists, driving instructors, solicitors, caricaturists and possibly even an Olympic sailor. And let's not forget the musician-turned-actor gainfully employed as Jeremy Irons' body double...More than simply the tale of the tape, Whatever Happened to the C86 Kids? is an exploration of C86's wide-reaching and often surprising legacy.Trade Review'You will love this book.' -- Richard Osman'Twenty-two tales of youthful anger, innocence and indolence, filtered through almost forty years of regret, melancholy and, occasionally, dogged resistance. Nige Tassell succinctly and sweetly conjures up an era when groups could form in Glossop, Hebden Bridge or Whitstable and - for a few months, at least - become national heroes via the patronage of John Peel and the weekly music press. He spins gold from their grab-bag of agendas, musical politics and effects pedals and creates something that is frequently more impressive, entertaining and enjoyable than the music itself.' -- Bob Stanley'This is a funny, sad, gorgeous and beautifully researched book about the most influential loser tribe in the history of British music.' -- David Quantick'A valuable slice of pop history.' -- Mark Ellen'Nige's writing is to be treasured - a warm, welcoming and wonderful book.' -- Jude Rogers'Who, of a certain vintage and a certain propensity for hoarding things in lofts, including cassette-tape compilations sold via a weekly music publication, wouldn't want THIS BOOK?' -- Andrew Collins'Incredibly beautiful.' -- John Niven'Excellent.' -- Gideon Coe'About music, but also about youthful dreams and mature reality. A lovely read.' -- Danny Kelly'Absolutely fantastic.' -- Sian Pattenden, Culture Bunker'Often funny, sometimes poignant ... [a] candid, evocative snapshot of a scene that is fondly but scarcely celebrated. 4/5' -- Classic Pop'A valuable preservation of faded networks and forgotten ways to belong.' -- The Wire'Cheery. 8/10' -- Uncut'Rather brilliant ... in the stories of many of these C86 kids are reminders of the power of optimism. If we can, we should guard against losing our belief in possibility.' -- The Scotsman

Cultural historian Peter Doggett explores the rich heritage of Bowie''s most productive and inspired decade, and traces the way in which his music reflected and influenced the world around him. From ''Space Oddity'', his dark vision of mankind''s voyage into the unknown terrain of space, to the Scary Monsters album, Doggett examines in detail Bowie''s audacious creation of an ''alien'' rock star, Ziggy Stardust, and his increasingly perilous explorations of the nature of identity and the meaning of fame.Mixing brilliant musical critique with biographical insight and acute cultural analysis, The Man Who Sold The World is a unique study of a major artist and his times.Trade ReviewThrilling...takes its place next to Revolution in the Head on the short shelf of necessary reading about pop. Book SynopsisAlthough we are acquainted with the music of J. S. Bach through countless performances and recordings, the composer himself continues to come across as the somewhat enigmatic figure depicted in a single, familiar portrait. Published in 2000 to mark the 250th anniversary of Bach''s death, author and leading Bach scholar Christoph Wolff presents a new picture that brings to life this towering figure of the Baroque era. Now available in paperback, this engaging biography portrays Bach as the living, breathing--and sometimes imperfect--human being that he was, while bringing to bear all the advances gained in the last half-century of Bach scholarship. Wolff demonstrates the intimate connection between the composer''s life and his music, showing how Bach''s superb inventiveness pervaded his career as a musician, composer, performer, scholar, and teacher. And throughout, we see Bach in the broader context of his time: its institutions, traditions, and influences. With this highly readable boTrade Revieweminently readable, at times even colloquial. Book Synopsis***WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER***''A smart, funny, brilliant book on how to be smart about being funny, brilliantly'' Sarah Cooper''This book has finally convinced me that joking around can actually be important and powerful'' Ed Gamble''Eye-opening, important and utterly enjoyable. Come for the humour, stay for the insights'' Arianna HuffingtonHumour is a superpower. If you''re not using it, the joke''s on you. When we''re kids we laugh all the time. The average four year-old laughs as many as 300 times a day, while the average forty year-old laughs 300 times every two and a half months! We grow up, start working and suddenly become serious and important people, trading laughter for bottom lines and mind-dumbing zoom calls. But the benefits of humour for our work and life are huge. Studies have shown that humour makes us appear more competent and confident, strengthens our relationships, unlocks creativity and boosts resilience during difficult times. Dr. Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas are on a mission to help everyone discover the power of humour. Based on the popular Stanford Business course, this book will show you how to mine your life for material, explore the Four Deadly Humour Myths and help you figure out which style of humour you fall into - The Magnet, The Sweetheart, The Sniper or the Stand Up. Drawing on behavioural science, advice from world-class comedians and stories from top leaders, Humour, Seriously will show you how to harness the power of humour every day. Trade ReviewHumour is magical. It can make fear and pomposity vanish and creativity and resilience appear in their place. The ultimate guide to using the magical power of funny as a tool for leadership and a force for good, Humour, Seriously is an intoxicating mix of science, strategy, and slapstick - a knee-slapping, mind-expanding tour de force * Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of When,, Drive, and A Whole Mind *A smart, funny, brilliant book on how to be smart about being funny, brilliantly. My teams are always at their best when approaching problems with levity, which entails both humility and optimism and always engenders trust. Plus, it's more fun - like this book! * Eric Schmidt, former CEO and Executive Chair of Google (Alphabet) *A sharp, incisive, and genuinely funny read. Humour, Seriously translates the knowledge of the world of comedy to tools that actually work in the world of business * Anne Libera, Director of Comedy Studies at The Second City *If you think your workplace would work better if everyone laughed more, this is your playbook * Chip Heath, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Power of Moments *I've always used humour as a secret weapon at Spanx. The bad news is that this book features all of those words. Prominently. The good news is that against all odds, you'll actually have fun reading it. It probably won't turn you into Ali Wong, Dave Chappelle, or Hannah Gadsby, but it will give you a much deeper appreciation of how they think-and teach you some new ways to make people laugh * Adam Grant, New York Times-bestselling author of Originals and Give And Take, host of the TED podcast WorkLife *In this eye-opening, important and utterly enjoyable book, Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas use science to explain how humour at work (and in life) helps alleviate stress, anxiety, and burnout. Come for the humour, stay for the insights * Arianna Huffington, co-founder of The Huffington Post and CEO of Thrive Global *If this book and Brad Pitt walked into a bar, and I could only pick one, I'd take the book home with me * Nancy Lublin, Former CEO, Crisis TextLine and DoSomething.Org *Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas have written a remarkable book for a remarkable moment in history. I long ago learned that when weighed down by serious matters, one may best be taken seriously by seeking out a certain light-heartedness as an expression of humility, optimism and confidence on the road to the serious business of nurturing trust and leading others * Joel Peterson, Chairman of Jetblue Airways *This myth-busting, grin-inducing, data-driven humdinger of a book simply nails what I've clung on to for years: that humour can be more than ephemeral entertainment. When appropriately curated, it creates the right culture for success. In fact, its absence should be a cause for concern. You may eat your five a day and walk ten thousand steps but when did you last check if there was enough laughter in your life, in your team, in your business? If you had a centuries-old tried and tested tool that enhances rapport, creativity, collaboration, resilience, leadership, mental and physical health, sales and more - why wouldn't you use it? * Neil Mullarkey Author, speaker, improviser and Co-founder, London’s Comedy Store Players *I've been a comedian for ages, and this book has finally convinced me that joking around can actually be important and helpful.
