  • Lexington Books Films and Dreams

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFilms and Dreams considers the essential link between films and the world of dreams. To discuss dream theory in the context of film studies means moving from the original, clinical context within which dream theory was originally developed to an environment established by primarily aesthetic concerns. Botz-Bornstein deals with dreams as ''self-sufficient'' phenomena that are interesting not because of their contents but because of the ''dreamtense'' through which they deploy their being. A diverse selection of films are examined in this light: Tarkovsky''s anti-realism exploring the domain of the improbable between symbolization, representation and alienation; Sokurov''s subversive attacks on the modern image ideology; Arthur Schnitzler''s shifting of the familiar to the uncanny and Kubrick''s avoidance of this structural model in Eyes Wide Shut; and Wong Kar-Wai''s dreamlike panorama of parodied capitalism.Trade Review[Botz-Bornstein] displays a masterful degree of familiarity and understanding, not only of the concept in question but also of the concept's historical relativity....Film and Dreams contains a great deal of vital argument, which for formalist and psychoanalytic scholars of film should provide a great deal of impetus for much needed discussion. * Screening The Past, June 2008 *Botz-Bornstein's books display a superior capacity to engage—with rigour, application and insightfulness—in research projects dedicated to customarily neglected philosophical topics. In an English-speaking academic world dominated by over-specialization and institutionalized narrow-mindedness, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein's Films and Dreams brings a breath of fresh air. * Parallax Magazine, June 2009 *Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction: Dreamtense and the Art of Film Chapter 2 Chapter 1. • Lexington Books Images for a Generation Doomed The Films and

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOver the past two decades, independent director Gregg Araki has emerged as one of the most intriguing auteurs of contemporary U.S. cinema. A leading figure of the New Queer Cinema movement of the early 1990s, Araki is known for his innovative, eye-opening, and at-times-controversial films aimed primarily at queer audiences. Images for a Generation Doomed: The Films and Career of Gregg Araki explores the films and career trajectory to date of this New Queer Cinema pioneer. Offering in-depth analyses of films such as The Living End, Totally F***ed Up, The Doom Generation, Nowhere, and Splendor, Kylo-Patrick R. Hart demonstrates how, over the course of the 1990s, the director''s cinematic offerings became increasingly devoid of their early subversive potential. Hart goes on to argue that as the 1990s progressed, Araki''s films were largely irrelevant to the cultural project of providing groundbreaking on-screen representations of non-heterosexual individuals living in the age of AIDS. However, Hart sees Mysterious Skin as evidence of Araki''s successful attempt at reestablishing his cinematic and cultural relevancy in relation to the approaches and subject matter of contemporary queer cinema in the new millennium.Trade ReviewProvides a succint overview of the controversial so-called new queer director....Well-documented study....Helpful reading for any film course.... Recommended. -- G.R. Butters Jr. * CHOICE, June 2010 *Kylo-Patrick Hart’s impassioned and insightful exploration of controversial auteur Gregg Araki is another laudatory achievement for this award-winning scholar. By combining his years of teaching auteur studies with an immense knowledge of Araki’s work, Hart raises thought provoking questions about the director’s career trajectory and places him within the context of the New Queer Cinema. The author’s unique approach to his subject is what makes this treatise unique. His integrative study of Araki's film grammar, unique storytelling devices, problematic sexual politics, and fan reception are arranged within the chronological arch of the director’s oeuvre. Images for a Generation Doomed will be a welcome addition both to film libraries and to college and graduate courses in media and cultural studies. It truly is an unforgettable book about an unforgettable director. -- Catherine R. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThe section on the ‘academization of hip-hop’ – what the book’s title describes as ‘hip-hop within the academy’ – was promising as it is an area that is rarely well covered compared to the more common emphasis on the convergences of youth, politics and hip-hop. . . .Snell and Söderman are appropriately attuned to the ways in which public education is increasingly inflected by the demands and agendas of the neoliberal state. * Popular Music *Music educators will not be the only ones who benefit from this rounded, wide-ranging and yet focused study on the background, uses, meanings, and educational potential of hip-hop. This very readable account has the rare gift of being both entertaining and scholarly. It gives much food for thought as well as practical advice for teachers, and it represents a much-needed addition to the literature on both hip-hop and music education. -- Lucy Green, Professor of Music Education, UCL Institute of Education, London UKSnell and Söderman’s book is a welcome and timely text that draws attention to hip-hop beyond its most visible, commodified forms in popular culture and that challenges the bases of assumptions made surrounding hip-hop scholarship. The authors approach their subject matter with humility, and in doing so, provide a thought-provoking and valuable collection of essays that will surely appeal to scholars in a range of fields, including popular music studies, ethnomusicology, applied ethnomusicology, music education, and music teacher education. -- Gareth Dylan Smith, Institute of Contemporary Music PerformanceA block party of a book—Snell and Söderman mix and remix educational orthodoxies into a whole new sound. -- Randall Everett Allsup, Teachers College Columbia UniversityTable of ContentsContents Acknowledgments Part 1 Ethnographic Hip-Hop Studies 1 Introduction 2 Young Hip-Hop Musicians Talk About Their Learning and Creative Strategies 3 Towards a Swedish Professional Hip-Hop Identity 4 The Musical Personhood of Three Canadian Turntablists: Implications for Transformative Collaborative Practice in Music Education 5 First Nations Hip-Hop Artists’ Identity and Voice Part 2 Academization of Hip-Hop 6 Introduction to Part 2 7 The Formation of a Scientific Field: Hip-Hop Academicus 8 What is at Stake? • Lexington Books AmericanSoviet Cultural Diplomacy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAmericanSoviet Cultural Diplomacy: The Bolshoi Ballet's American Premiere is the first full-length examination of a Soviet cultural diplomatic effort. Following the signing of an American-Soviet cultural exchange agreement in the late 1950s, Soviet officials resolved to utilize the Bolshoi Ballet's planned 1959 American tour to awe audiences with Soviet choreographers' great accomplishments and Soviet performers' superb abilities. Relying on extensive research, Cadra Peterson McDaniel examines whether the objectives behind Soviet cultural exchange and the specific aims of the Bolshoi Ballet's 1959 American tour provided evidence of a thaw in American-Soviet relations. Interwoven throughout this study is an examination of the Soviets' competing efforts to create ballets encapsulating Communist ideas while simultaneously reinterpreting pre-revolutionary ballets so that these works were ideologically acceptable. McDaniel investigates the rationale behind the creation of the Bolshoi's repertoire and the Soviet leadership's objectives and interpretation of the tour's success as well as American response to the tour. The repertoire included the four ballets, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Giselle, and The Stone Flower, and two Highlights Programs, which included excerpts from various pre- and post-revolutionary ballets, operas, and dance suites. How the Americans and the Soviets understood the Bolshoi's success provides insight into how each side conceptualized the role of the arts in society and in political transformation. AmericanSoviet Cultural Diplomacy: The Bolshoi Ballet's American Premiere demonstrates the ballet's role in Soviet foreign policy, a shift to artful warfare, and thus emphasizes the significance of studying cultural exchange as a key aspect of Soviet foreign policy and analyzes the continued importance of the arts in twenty-first century Russian politics.Trade ReviewCadra McDaniel’s book, which is based on serious and solid research using both archival and published documents engaging contemporary Soviet and American periodicals and occasionally oral history, is a welcome addition to the growing literature about cultural production/consumption, cultural politics, and ideology in the Soviet Union, especially during post-Stalin socialism. It is devoted to a very important topic— the role of cultural diplomacy in both the relaxation of international tensions and the intensification of ideological confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States during the rule of Nikita Khrushchev. Its main focus is on the history of the successful Bolshoi Ballet's tour in the U.S. in 1959, which is presented as a major chapter in Soviet cultural diplomacy and an episode of the Soviet ‘artful warfare’ against the Americans. -- Sergei Zhuk, Ball State UniversityThis book is well worth the attention of anyone interested in the Cold War or in the value of cultural exchanges, then, now, and in the future. . . .McDaniel's work will awaken those scholars who concentrate on military and political confrontations, such as those concerning Russian activity in Ukraine, to the importance of the calming and rewarding aspects of cultural interactions. * The Russian Review *Table of ContentsDedication Transliteration and Translation Notes Acknowledgments Contents List of Photographs and Tables Introduction Chapter 1: Ideological Goodwill: American and Soviet Cultural Exchange Plans Chapter 2: Restricted Repertoire: Planning for the Bolshoi’s 1959 Tour Chapter 3: The Class Struggle and Shakespeare: The Soviets’ Interpretation of Romeo and Juliet Chapter 4: Imperial Communism: The Soviets’ Reinterpretation of P. • Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Sinascape Contemporary Chinese Cinema

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSinascape: Contemporary Chinese Cinema is one of the most comprehensive studies of transnational Chinese-language films at the turn of the millennium. Gary Xu combines a close reading of contemporary movies from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong with an intimate look into the transnational Chinese film industry, based on his working relationship with filmmakers. He coins the word sinascape to reflect on the intersection between Chinese cinema and global cultural production, referring to cinematic representations of ethnic Chinese people around the globe. Sinascape describes contemporary Chinese cinema as a global network and a group of contact zones where ideologies clash, new identities emerge (through both border crossings and resistance to globalization), and visual innovations and progressive visions become possible. General readers, film enthusiasts, and critics alike will benefit from Xu''s discussion of popular film, which leads to a broader conversation about China''s economic transformations, global politics, and cultural production. Including discussion of films like Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Kung Fu Hustle, Devils on the Doorstep, Suzhou River, Beijing Bicycle, Millennium Mambo, Goodbye Dragon Inn, and Hollywood Hong Kong, the book emphasizes the transnational nature of contemporary Chinese cinema.Trade ReviewSinascape is an exciting study of transnational Chinese cinema in the early twenty-first century. This book exhibits Gary Xu's rare combination of theoretical persuasiveness, superb grasp of the film medium, and intimate personal knowledge of the film industry. Page after page, the reader will experience nothing less than intellectual stimulation and scholarly ingenuity. -- Sheldon H. Lu, University of California, DavisSinascape applies its sharp-eyed focus to spotting trends and interpreting aspects in Chinese cinema, and uses examples of popular Chinese movies to illustrate its points. * Midwest Book Review *He [Xu] ends up presenting an interesting challenge to the standard view of the industry.... Xu's thoughftul investigation into Non-Hollywood sharpens our critical awareness of the nature of representation and of the new versions of Orientalism produced by the transnational movie industry. -- Karen Louise Erichson, Editor, Frydenlund Publishing House, CopenhagenSinascape contends that the myth of a 'China’s century' is fundamentally linked to that of a 'Hollywood’s century,' for in both cases a cinematic mode of production dominates the realms of culture, ideology, and politics. With this book, Gary Xu establishes himself as a cutting-edge scholar who offers provocative readings on urgent issues such as copyright, piracy, digital technology, global networking, and cross-cultural spectatorship, all at a time when China is inventing a new visual culture on a dazzling transnational, translocal scale. -- Yingjin ZhangTable of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction Chapter 2 The Right to Copy and the Digital Copyright: Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and China's Cultural Symptoms Chapter 3 Violence, the Sixth Generation Filmmaking, and Devils on the Doorstep Chapter 4 My Camera Doesn't Lie: Cinematic Realism and Chinese Cityscape in Beijing Bicycle and Suzhou River Chapter 5 Shaw Brothers' Old Cinema Excavated: From Kung Fu Hustle to Goodbye Dragon Inn Chapter 6 The Smell of the City: Memory and Hou Hsiao-hsien's Millennium Mambo Chapter 7 Hollywood Hong Kong, Hollywood Hong Kong, and the Cinematic Mode of Production Chapter 8 Postscript: Remaking East Asia

Book SynopsisBe there again! The Christmas present that brings back the sixties. From their first TV appearance on Thank Your Lucky Stars!, buttoned up in matching hounds-tooth suits at manager Andrew Loog Oldham''s insistence, to the louche rockers who appeared on stage for the televised free concert in London''s Hyde Park in 1969, this book looks back at their career-defining broadcasts, remembering the music, the clothes, the fans, the rivals and friends, and the world at large around them, divided by generation between broad-sheet moral panic and hysterical teen riots.Featuring previously unseen facsimile documents from the BBC and commercial TV and radio archives and many stunning unseen images, this is history as it happened, in context, immediate and vivid, offering new insights and a fresh unexplored perspective on the story of one of the greatest great rock ''n'' roll bands the world has ever seen.Trade ReviewPainstakingly researched ... the photographs are gold ... reaquaints us with the ingenuous vulnerability, humility and humanity that originally rocketed [the Stones] to stardom. * Classic Rock *Handsomely illustrated ... thrills the inquisitive. * Mojo *A brilliant book. -- Robert Elms * BBC Radio London *A great kind of rock and roll archaeology of the beginnings of, not only a band, but of popular culture on radio and TV - it's fascinating. -- Nicola Meighan * BBC Radio Scotland *
