Sheri Chinen Biesen unveils the behind-the-scenes history of cinema censorship and explore how Hollywood responded to censorial constraints on screen content in a changing cultural and industrial landscape.Trade ReviewAlthough most introductory textbooks touch upon the broader subject, with a short gloss of the Production Code Administration (PCA), there’s never been a handy guide or a more thorough treatment until now, with Sheri Chinen Biesen’s expertly researched, amply illustrated, and wonderfully concise primer Film Censorship: Regulating America’s Screen. . . . The History Press Ltd Alastair Sim
Book SynopsisAlastair Sim was an enigmatic character both on and off the screen. His idiosyncratic style of acting in films such as The Belles of St Trinian''s endeared him to a cinema-going audience desperate to escape the day-to-day dreariness of an invasive, bureaucratic post-war Britain. In private, he was a curiously contradictory character, prejudiced and yet tolerant, thoughtful but sometimes inconsiderate. To examine the life of this extraordinary man, this biography contains original contributions from around thirty actors and actresses, including Sir Ian McKellen and Ronnie Corbett. It is supported by extensive research, including interviews with the playwright Christopher Fry, the television producer John Howard Davies and actors who appeared on stage with Alastair as far back as the 1940s. This book also explores Alastair''s life outside of films, including his marriage to Naomi Sim (whom he first met when she was twelve), his career as an elocution teacher, his extensive work on stage (including his theatrical endeavours with James Bridie), his championship of youth and his stalwart refusal to sign autographs.Alastair Sim offers a rare and fascinating insight into the life of one of Britain''s most respected and best-loved actors.

Harvard University Press Wagner and the Erotic Impulse
Book SynopsisRichard Wagner (1813-1883) was better known in the nineteenth century for his provocative musical eroticism. This title studies the composer and his works, showing how Wagner's obsession with sexuality prefigured the composition of operas such as "Tannhauser", "Die Walkure", "Tristan und Isolde", and "Parsifal".Trade ReviewBy shifting our attention from Wagner's politics to his erotics, Dreyfus enriches our understanding of all the major Wagner operas, as well as of the composer himself. This book will transform Wagner studies and the study of music and sexuality. -- Karol Berger, Stanford UniversityDreyfus's searching study of Wagner's sexuality – one with distinctively feminized and fetishistic qualities – penetrates to the core of both the man and the artist. His achievement is that he not only tells us more about the nature of Wagner's eroticism per se, but also makes clear how this substantively affected the music he wrote. An important contribution that brilliantly illuminates some crepuscular zones of the Wagner phenomenon. -- Barry Millington, Editor of the Wagner JournalLaurence Dreyfus has written an immensely important book about the importance of the erotic in Wagner's life and work. The exploration of the fascinating and contradictory subject is both profound and witty. This is a must-read for anyone interested in Wagner's music. -- Vladimir Jurowski, Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic OrchestraA fascinating study of a distinct dimension of Wagner's life and art. -- Larry Lipkis * Library Journal *The Nazis have cast a long, retrospective shadow over Wagner, but as Laurence Dreyfus argues in Wagner and the Erotic Impulse, what scandalized (and delighted) 19th-century listeners to Wagner's music was not its politics but its unbridled sensuality. Dreyfus explores the aesthetic and biographical issues (including the composer's fondness for wearing women's silk lingerie) with admirable clarity, laying bare an aspect of the composer that is both central and often strangely ignored. -- Adam Lively * Sunday Times *Even in this supposedly liberal era Wagner's detractors still wag fingers at his love-life...As this ground-breaking new study suggests, it's the erotic yearnings so central to his great works that remain arresting. -- Michael Scott Rohan * BBC Music *Revelatory. -- Alex Ross * New Yorker *[Dreyfus] has produced a scholarly yet eminently readable volume that will bewitch any opera-lover. Like a benign magician--like Wagner himself, perhaps--Dreyfus conjures up a vivid array of characters and allows them to reveal their innermost thoughts through their own words and deeds. Nietzche and Schopenhauer are there, as are Baudelaire, Bulow, Heine, D'Annunzio, Thomas Mann, Krafft-Ebing and Henry James. -- Daniel Snowman * Opera *At this point, the only good reason to add to the mountains of Wagner scholarship is to add another peak, which is precisely what Laurence Dreyfus has done in Wagner and the Erotic Impulse...The payoff for following him through his 250-page argument is that Wagner's music sounds deeper, richer and better than ever...Dreyfus' greatest achievement, a great deal of it pioneering, is in his investigation of Wagner's eroticism in the music itself. It's the hardest kind of work a writer about music can do, and Dreyfus does it with rare insight and imagination, and in language as accessible to the interested lay reader as it would be to fellow scholars...Wagner and the Erotic Impulse tears the roof off Wagner scholarship. The artistic cosmos it finds inside is a vastly more vital and compelling place. -- Tim Pfaff * Bay Area Reporter *[Dreyfus's] persuasive contention is that this music is not only erotic to our ears and understanding, but that it was interpreted as such from the very start. Furthermore, he shows that the explicit connections of eroticism with music long predate the nineteenth century, going back at least as far as the terpsichorean tradition of the sixteenth century. Dreyfus impressively manages to argue that music can be interpreted as expressly erotic without getting himself entangled in the complexities of whether music can in general be assigned particular interpretation. -- Bernard O'Donoghue * Times Literary Supplement *Dreyfus' book is an excellent account of what is by any measure a crucial aspect of Wagner's extraordinary art. -- Bradley Winterton * Taipei Times *This is an altogether unusual portrait of the composer, one resting on a platform of brazen sexuality. Dreyfus posits Eros both as a prism through which to access Wagner's biography and oeuvre anew, and as the impulse driving the latter into existence...The hazards attendant on a study of Eros are offset by the strength of Dreyfus's argument. He elevates the erotic to a central paradigm for Wagner: its force is thematised in Tannhäuser, Tristan and Parsifal, documented throughout Wagner's writings, and substantiated by contemporary discourse, both passionate espousal and disgust. But as the author later explains, erotic impulse is also fundamental to the experience of music...Telling details are often the gems in any history, and this book is richly studded...Dreyfus's command of sources is impressive; all are newly translated, their contextual breadth forming a latter-day answer to Greenblatt's so-called new historicism...A rich study, saturated with insight, fresh perspective and delivered with panache. The virtuosity of Dreyfus's readings is often dazzling, if challenging to a more mainstream approach to Wagner...Yet Dreyfus's strategy of bringing historical voices to the fore allows him to open up broader hermeneutic horizons with ease...So thought-provoking is this study in its claims that it will surely give impetus to further scholarly work on erotics, as an historical nodal point both for Wagner reception, and perhaps for music more broadly. -- David Trippett * Cambridge Opera Journal *Nietzsche's posthumous fragment [on the ardours of music for Tristan und Isolde] is one of many examples which Laurence Dreyfus cites in his book to prove that it wasn't Richard Wagner's broadsides against "Judaism" but rather his connection to eroticism and sexuality which enraged contemporaries. Dreyfus notes rightly that the relationships between what Nietzsche termed Wagner's "morbid sexuality," the treatment of Eros in his music dramas, and its reception at the time has thus far been treated only hesitantly in Wagner scholarship. Wagner and the Erotic Impulse tries to fill this gap, and Dreyfus, to come directly to the point, doesn't shy away from naming "the actual word for the ardours of the music in Tristan." That this musicologist (and virtuoso on the viola da gamba) who teaches at Magdalen College Oxford also exhibits a downright off-the-cuff and refreshingly irreverent handling of Wagner and the subject of eroticism is certainly surprising...That music should be able to simulate (or even stimulate) desire because it lacks an erotic object, and that by "purely musical" means should be able to represent tension, impulses, arousal and deliverance ought to enlighten every Wagner-listener. And how the tender love motive in the first scene of Die Walküre has risen to a wild mania at the end of the first act is conveyed to the listener, if not consciously, then certainly unconsciously. One can confidently subscribe to Dreyfus's conclusion that Wagner's erotics had decidedly more significant artistic consequences than did his anti-Semitism...[Dreyfus] must be credited with having treated a noteworthy theme without striking wrong notes. -- Wolfgang Fuhrmann * Wagner Spectrum *

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Improvisation: Methods and Techniques for Music
Book SynopsisImprovisation plays a key role in the toolbox of the music therapist. Tony Wigram's practical and comprehensive guide and online content will prove indispensable to students, teachers, therapists and musicians as a book of musical techniques and therapeutic methods. Beginning with an overview of developing, teaching and analysing the skills of improvisation, Wigram describes techniques ranging from warming up to mirroring, rhythmic grounding, containing and holding. With specific sections on piano improvisation, chordal and 2-, 3- and 4- note improvisation are covered, in addition to advanced skills such as frameworking and transitions. Wigram also includes techniques for thematic improvisation, group improvisation and outlines methods for analysing and reporting improvisational processes. Notated examples allow readers to try out techniques and progress as they read, with audio examples on the accompanying online content adding another dimension to the structure and guidance provided for all levels of music student and therapist.Trade ReviewIn conclusion, this is an impressive book, essential for its exceptional thoroughness and readability as well as for being the only book of its kind. It will be invaluable as a training manual for professional courses, and may also raise other health professionals' awareness of the complex and scientifically grounded skills deployed by a profession so often obliged to defend its research base against accusations of a lack of scientific rigour from those with too narrow a vision of evidence based medicine. -- British Journal of Music Therapy, John Strange, former Chair of the APMTThe book's prose is clear and always user friendly. Wigram's approach is also profoundly practical, requiring the reader to work on the methods outlined, moving "backwards as well as forwards" so as to revise, integrate and develop them in ways specific to the needs of particular working contexts. The book is both accessible and profoundly practical. Moreover, whilst written for a music therapy audience, it warrants a much wider readership, including musicians that play in hospitals or in hospices who may not necessarily be formally qualified as music therapists'. -- British Journal of Music EducationTony Wigram is an experienced improviser, who has written a book to help others to attain the necessary musical and clinical skills to learn to improvise and to effectively use improvisation in their music therapy sessions. As I begun reading, I felt that Wigram was speaking to my experience. He spoke to and normalized my fears of failure and my inner voice of self-criticism. His intention with this book is to dispel the myth that improvisation is "a gift granted to the chosen few" (p.19) and he asserts that "the potential to 'join in' with a musical experience through improvising is inborn and present in everyone" (p.19). It is really designed for music therapy students and clinicians. It is geared towards both beginning and experienced pianists and includes the use of other instruments. It begins at a very basic level and progresses to very complex skills. The chapters that I found most valuable as an educator of undergraduate music therapy students were the chapters on musical techniques (Chapter 3), basic therapeutic methods and skills (Chapter 4), advanced therapeutic methods (Chapter 5), transitions (Chapter 6), and group improvisation (Chapter 8). All of these techniques are well explained, masterfully illustrated in the audio and notated example provided, and are further reinforced with readily accessible yet challenging exercises. Throughout, Wigram provides helpful guidelines in terms of strategies with which to experiment. Improvisation: Methods and Techniques for Music Therapy Clinicians, Educators, and Students is a must for all undergraduate music therapy students. This book provides a systematic approach for novice improvisers and as such is a wonderful teaching aid for those who have been reluctant to teach it in their program. This book also covers more complex skills and therefore I also highly recommended it for graduate students, clinicians, and people with improvisation experience. -- Music Therapy PerspectivesA comprehensive representation of the current international knowledge and practical experiences of music therapeutic interventions, which describes a systematic procedure on different instruments for teachers, students and clinical practitioners, and offers a lot of practical material to aid the development of a personal repertoire of music therapeutic interventions... [Wigram] is the authority to write a book on this topic. -- Musiktherapeutische UmschauThis bountiful text by experienced musician and researcher Tony Wigram is destined to become a standard on the shelves of music therapists globally. Packed full of ideas and examples, it breaks down the "doing" of improvisation into simple and straightforward sections...A bible for music therapists who use and teach improvisation - I highly recommend it. -- Australian Journal of Music TherapyA unique and excellent book of didactics for music therapy academic education, involving the systematisation (and "quantification") of music therapy procedures with a focus of improvisation, and of a Meta methodology of improvisation - especially in music therapy dyad work. While it could be considered first of all as a tutor for students and educators, it is also designed for clinicians to help develop more improvisation skills. As such, it is a handbook of improvisation for clinical practice, to develop more sensitivity to musical material, and to learn a very useful assessment and indication perspective into improvisation as an intervention. -- Nordic Journal of Music TherapyTable of ContentsForeword, Professor Kenneth Bruscia. 1. De Gruyter Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner as Music
Book SynopsisThe music reviews of Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner are central documents of 19th-century German musical culture. This book takes a closer look at the way these texts were written and explores the significant contributions Schumann and Wagner made to the discourse of musical appraisal. To that effect, the author raises fundamental questions that have thus far remained unaddressed: What textual features characterize the critical writings? How do Schumann and Wagner understand their roles as critics of music? And in what way do they reach out to the reader? Rather than understanding these critical writings exclusively as a gateway to the compositions and musical aesthetics of Schumann and Wagner, this book analyzes the texts through the lens of pragmatics, narratology and discourse analysis. Using this interdisciplinary perspective, the author proposes to understand Schumann and Wagner within the broader medial and discursive context of German ‘Kritik’. He challenges the dominant narrative that brands Schumann and Wagner as elitist Romantic critics, demonstrating instead that they actively encourage their readers to form their own judgements. This volume is an indispensable resource for scholars of German literature, periodicals and music alike.

Book SynopsisThe first photographic celebration of the most famous recording studio in the world with a foreword by Sir George Martin.Trade ReviewLucid and lavishly illustrated—a fine gift for pop and music history buffs. Appropriately ambitious biography of the recording studio that gave the world the Beatles’ eponymous swan song—but also, lest it be forgotten, the works of Helen Shapiro and Vanessa-Mae. Helen and Vanessa who? It helps to be a music geek, if not of a certain age, to appreciate the depths of BBC music critic Lawrence’s history of Abbey Road studios, which has been online for nearly nine decades now. For those who are not such geeks, then the basic bits of essential knowledge, all to be found in his pages, are these: The studio was built in the heart of St. John’s Wood, “London’s first garden suburb,” in a refitted Georgian mansion, and in those august surroundings was inaugurated under the baton of none other than Edward Elgar, he of “Pomp and Circumstance” fame. It was also a sonic laboratory, a place to test not only gear to help King George VI work through his stutter (the stuff of the hit movie The King’s Speech) but also the stereophonic, aurally deceptive goodies that would be put to use in the psychedelic era under the tutelage of good Sir George Martin. Before all that, though, Abbey Road had to make the transition from stuffy classical facility to pop wonderland. If you knew that the first pop hit to emerge from Abbey Road was “Cowpuncher’s Cantata” in 1952, then you will not need or profit from Lawrence’s considerable labors, but if you did not—or did not know that Pink Floyd, Radiohead and even Mel Gibson recorded here—then this book is certainly worthy of time and exploration. One might quibble with some of his assessments (Was Jeff Beck’s Truth really a forerunner of metal? Were the Hollies really just another cover band?), but Lawrence makes up for it with plenty of fine factual writing, especially on the technological side. Lucid and lavishly illustrated—a fine gift for pop and music history buffs. * Kirkus *The book is as captivating as the story it tells [...] The book is pure quality from start to finish – from the production, to the design, to the layout and content [...] For fans of music, for musicians, and for cultural historians, this book is definitely a must-have! -- Donna Jackson * British Beatles Fan Club *Abbey Road: The Best Studio in the World is an incredible documentation of cultural history for anyone who values music and how it's made. -- Anita Awbi * PRS for Music *This is the kind of book you dip into for a few minutes and emerge from two hours later – the text always informative, the photographs fresh as yesterday... -- Steven Carroll * The Sydney Morning Herald *Abbey Road is a big book worth lifting. * Rick Librarian *

Book SynopsisDaniel Defoe was born in London in 1660. He worked briefly as a hosiery merchant, then as an intelligence agent and political writer. His writings resulted in his imprisonment on several occasions, and earned him powerful friends and enemies. During his lifetime Defoe wrote over two hundred and fifty books, pamphlets and journals and travelled widely in both Europe and the British Isles. Among his most famous works are Robinson Crusoe (1719), Moll Flanders (1722) and A Journal of the Plague Year (1722). Though Defoe was nearly sixty before he began writing fiction, his work is so fundamental to the development of the novel that he is often cited as the first true English novelist. He is also regarded as a founding father of modern journalism and one of the earliest travel writers. Taylor & Francis Major Label Mastering
Book SynopsisMajor Label Mastering: Professional Mastering Process distills 25 years of mastering experience at Capitol Records into practical understandings and reliable systems. Containing unparalleled insights, this book reveals the mastering tricks and techniques used by Evren Göknar at one of the world's most notable record labels.Beginning with the requisite competencies every Mastering Engineer must develop, Major Label Mastering delves into the particulars of the mastering studio, as well as fundamental mastering tools. Included among these tools is The Five Step Mastering Process, a rigorously tested system that equips the practitioner to successfully and confidently master a project to exacting standards of audio fidelity. Covering all bases, the book discusses both macro and micro considerations: from mindset approach and connecting with clients down to detailed guidelines for processing audio, advanced methods, and audio restoration. Each chapter ends with exerciTrade Review"Absolutely essential for anyone seriously considering any aspect of mastering as their passion or career choice […] this is an under-the-hood approach which anyone involved in mastering can use to understand the entire process." - Greg Calbi, Sterling Sound"One of the first songs that Evren mastered for me was a very open, old-school sounding, Ray Charles-esque type of song. He suggested using one of the classic Capitol Records echo chambers on the mix. My first thought was, 'thats insane!', but my second thought was, 'thats cool!, let’s do it!' I realized very quickly that I was working with a very creative, open-minded Mastering Guru, who was going to take my mixes to a new level of creativity. Since then, Evren has mastered well over 800 songs for me. In addition to the great sounding final master, what I value about Evren is that he understands the importance of building the relationship between the Mixer and Mastering Engineer. Over the years my mixes have evolved and improved based on what I've learned from Evren and his creative approach, techniques and ideas that he has added to my mixes. It's as if we're on the same football team and I pass him the ball around the 30 yard line so to speak, and Evren runs it in the rest of the way for the goal! Now he has put his techniques and creative approach to Mastering in writing. This book is a must-have for any aspiring student or professional alike seeking a better understanding of the fine art of Mastering!"Bill Appleberry, Producer, Mixer (The Voice, The Wallflowers, Operator, Puddle Of Mudd, Stone Temple Pilots)"This is great. Evren is one of the best mastering engineers in the world and he's written a book about his craft." - David Holley, Group Managing Director Wise Music Group (Former Managing Director Abbey Road Studios, Former SVP EMI Music)''Mastering is often considered a mysterious black art, but while there is certainly a lot of artistry involved Evren Göknar’s book, published in April 2020 (Routledge/Focal Press), dispels the mystery in a very readable and understandable way. For anyone with an interest in mastering, either for DIY projects or as a potential career path, Evren has crammed a lot of really helpful information and very practical advice into this book, along with very sensible and constructive guides to developing and honing the core skills, techniques and approaches that make a good mastering engineer. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on developing and honing listening skills. It’s well worth adding to the book shelf.'' Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Beyond the Bottom Line
Book SynopsisThis is the first collection of original critical essays devoted to exploring the misunderstood, neglected and frequently caricatured role played by the film producer. The editors'' introduction provides a conceptual and methodological overview, arguing that the producer''s complex and multifaceted role is crucial to a film''s success or failure. The collection is divided into three sections where detailed individual essays explore a broad range of contrasting producers working in different historical, geographical, generic and industrial contexts. Rather than suggest there is a single type of producer, the collection analyses the rich variety of roles producers play, providing fascinating and informative insights into how the film industry actually works. This groundbreaking collection challenges several of the conventional orthodoxies of film studies, providing a new approach that will become required reading for scholars and students.Trade ReviewThis will prove an invaluable book, both to students and to those wishing to learn more about the film and media industries. Its spread is broad, making comparisons between different countries, practices and genres, and yet its intellectual focus is precise and well-conceived. The work of the producer has received scant attention in the past, and this important book rectifies that, and in a thorough, sophisticated and approachable way. Not to be missed. * Sue Harper, Emeritus Professor of Film History, University of Portsmouth, UK *A pioneering and timely volume emphasizing historical and transnational perspectives, Beyond the Bottom Line brings the myths and realities of the producer’s many roles into clear focus. Offering well developed case studies and conceptual clarification, the contributors deepen and extend the ongoing conversation about practitioner’s agency in thoughtful and productive ways. * Mette Hjort, Chair Professor of Visual Studies, Lingnan University, Hong Kong *This long-overdue scholarly collection represents an important step forward in the study of the role of the movie producer. Beyond the Bottom Line is a welcome addition to the burgeoning literature of production and industry studies. Its broad range of critical case studies will be a valuable resource to researchers and students alike. * Julian Hoxter, Screenwriting Coordinator, San Francisco State University, USA, and editor of Screenwriting *Table of ContentsTable of Contents List of Illustrations Notes on Contributors Acknowledgements 1. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Writing the Horror Movie
Book SynopsisTales of horror have always been with us, from Biblical times to the Gothic novel to successful modern day authors and screenwriters. Though the genre is often maligned, it is huge in popularity and its resilience is undeniable. Marc Blake and Sara Bailey offer a detailed analysis of the horror genre, including its subgenres, tropes and the specific requirements of the horror screenplay. Tracing the development of the horror film from its beginnings in German Expressionism, the authors engage in a readable style that will appeal to anyone with a genuine interest in the form and the mechanics of the genre. This book examines the success of Universal Studio's franchises of the 30s to the Serial Killer, the Slasher film, Asian Horror, the Supernatural, Horror Vérité and current developments in the field, including 3D and remakes. It also includes step-by-step writing exercises and interviews with seasoned writers/directors/ producers discussing budget restrictions, screenplay form and Trade ReviewThe truth is that the screenplay is a bastard form of literature. It is not a play nor book nor movie, and not just simply a blueprint for a film. All movies, regardless of genre, depend on the screenplay. However it is the director who makes the movie by realizing the printed words of the script on film. I have seen mediocre screenplays made into very good films. And I have seen excellent screenplays made into bad movies by incompetent directors. Again, it's important for people to understand that the screenplays essential role in film making is the same regardless of the genre of the film. --John Landis, 2012Writing the Horror Movie is written in particular for anyone interested in writing a screenplay for a horror film, and in seeing that screenplay turned into reality. But it's also full of fascinating nuggets of analysis and useful information more generally for scholars, students and fans of the genre - whether this is musing on the aesthetics of disgust, offering nifty psychological profiles of major horror monsters, or advice on how to exploit your film and turn it into a lucrative franchise. Two dismembered thumbs up for Marc Blake and Sara Bailey! -- Darryl Jones, Professor, School of English, Trinity College Dublin, IrelandA lucid, well-structured and thought-provoking introduction that ranges widely across the genre. Intelligent and perceptive throughout. Recommended for aspiring writers and critics. -- George Green, Senior Lecturer, Department of English and Creative Writing, Lancaster University, UKCo-authors Marc Blake and Sara Bailey have penned a magnum opus entitled Writing The Horror Movie, which aims to do exactly what it says on the tin. Every little piece of useful advice can be found in this book, from analysing the history of on-screen horror to defining the types of sub-genres to what tropes can usually be found in any scary movie....They seem to have put their utmost into making this book for the casual film lover and have come out shining with a witty, knowledgeable book to call their own. Quite simply, Writing The Horror Movie as written by Marc Blake and Sara Bailey is a must-read for any hardcore horror fans, and definitely worth checking out for many film fans in general. -- Jack Martin * Film Feeder *There are hundreds of books about screenwriting, but precious few aimed at the would-be horror film author; this volume is a noteworthy addition to the literature. Both Blake and Bailey have written horror films and teach the process at Southampton Solent University, UK. This volume covers horror films from the world over and is packed with examples. The breadth of the films noted makes this book almost a course in horror history. Through each chapter on structuring the screenplay, the reader is led through the succession of tropes: unease, dread, terror, horror, and finally disgust. The style is engaging, but the authors make no bones about the effort involved in all aspects of filmmaking – a fact reiterated in the appendix of interviews with writers, directors, and a producer. There are chapters on the international market; the ins and outs of the prequel, sequel, and franchise; and the trick of blending or crossing genre lines. The writing exercises are comprehensive, but beginners might profit from sharing their attmepts with a trusted reader. The volume includes a 425-item filmography and a tightly focused bibliography. A solid resource for film buffs and budding screenwriters. Summing Up: recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; two-year program students; general readers. -- D. A. Fonthill Media Ltd Status Quo Song by Song
Book SynopsisAfter their initial inception as a schoolboy band named The Scorpions in 1962, and following a number of band name and personnel changes, Status Quo eventually hit the charts in 1968 with the massive hit single `Pictures of Matchstick Men’. However, it wasn’t until they ditched their psychedelic duds and took on the denim, accompanied by a radical gear-shift from teenage-friendly pop to out-and-out electric boogie that they came into their own, defining the rock music genre for many throughout the 1970s. A raft of hugely successful albums followed that are still held in awe by an army of loyal fans; the release of `Piledriver’ in 1972 heralded a purple patch in which twelve consecutive long-players charted in the UK top 10. The classic `Frantic Four’ lineup of Rossi, Parfitt, Lancaster and Coghlan started to disintegrate in 1981 and eventually imploded after Live Aid in 1985. Although Quo have gone on to post over sixty UK chart hits in no less than six separate decades, this publication focuses on those days of glory, song by song from their earliest recordings until the demise of the classic line-up.

The notes are particularly admirable, and the translations of the letters and other documents impeccable”– Arnold McMillin, The Slavonic and East European ReviewWinner of the Outstanding Academic Title for 2018 award sponsored by Choice"We are now at home with much that was once taboo about Tchaikovsky—his tsarist loyalties, his homosexuality, how he died. But the Sentimentalism of his letters, its emotional register, still startles the modern reader. This revealing collection helps us see that how one writes letters is only a small part of who one is."—Caryl Emerson, Princeton University“This collection of finely translated letters, documents, and musical mementos moves Tchaikovsky considerably beyond the vapid biographical clichés of yesteryear. Turns out, the genius was also a human being —funny, coarse, germaphobic, borderline alcoholic, with great friends and supportive siblings. Gay? Fine by them.”—Simon Morrison, Princeton University"This indispensable volume, containing copious unpublished private correspondence, allows us to gain an unparalleled insight into Tchaikovsky as a human being, and thus move beyond the clichés surrounding the composer’s biography." —Rosamund Bartlett, author of Tolstoy: A Russian Life
