The University of Chicago Press Telling About Society Chicago Guides to Writing
Book SynopsisExplores the unconventional ways we communicate what we know about society to others. This book explores the many ways knowledge about society can be shared and interpreted through different forms of telling such as fiction, films, photographs, maps, mathematical models - many of which remain outside the boundaries of conventional social science.Trade Review"Telling About Society should carry a warning label: 'Do not start reading unless you're prepared to spend the next few hours having your horizons broadened and your understanding of social sciences deepened. Further, prepare to abandon any belief that insight and originality are incompatible with clarity, accessibility, and plain good writing.' This book will immediately take its place on my shelves and my students' reading lists alongside Becker's Tricks of the Trade as an indispensable introduction to thinking about social science theory and research." - Larry Gross, professor and director, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California"

Princeton University Press One Day in the Life of the English Language
Book SynopsisGenerations of student writers have been subjected to usage handbooks that proclaim, "This is the correct form. Learn it"--books that lay out a grammar, but don't inspire students to use it. By contrast, this antihandbook handbook, presenting some three hundred sentences drawn from the printed works of a single, typical day in the life of the languTrade ReviewOne of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2016 "This little volume has several things going for it: it's compact, bound in the style of an industrial manual, so it can take a lot of punishment."--Mary Norris, Times Literary Supplement "Cioffi effectively employs a fast-paced narrative style that readers will find entertaining and insightful."--Teaching Matters Monthly "The work is accessible, fun to read, and packed with helpful information on almost every page. It will appeal to a wide audience--not only those who love grammar but also those who do not."--Library Journal "For readers at any level who are seeking to improve their written English, One Day in the Life of the English Language helps to make grammar relatable and rewarding... A creative alternative for students of all ages."--Sarah Powell, Reference Reviews "Cioffi has created a different kind of grammar handbook, one that not only lays out the 'rules' of Standard English but also makes readers more sensitive to language and so better able to communicate ideas... He used the material in this book in a freshman composition course, to good effect, and readers will find that this clever book sharpens their awareness."--ChoiceTable of ContentsPreface xi Navigation Tips xix Introduction The Starting Idea: You and Your Audience 1 Preview of the Following Pages 7 December 29, 2008, as History 10 Two Disclaimers 20 On Using Sentences from the Real World 23 Formal Usage-Its Rules and Value 31 "If you don't have grammar, you don't have sense" 40 1Actants, Actions, Ongoing States: Nouns, Verbs, and the Sentences They Form Why Learn the Parts of Speech? 45 Fundamentals 49 Fine Tuning 56 Deep Focus 71 2Words That Modify and Orient: Adjectives, Adverbs, Conjunctions, Prepositions, Articles, Interjections The Power of Small Words Well Deployed 88 Adjectives 89 Adverbs 99 Conjunctions 114 Prepositions 123 Articles 128 Interjections 133 3Who Is He/She? Boydell & Brewer Ltd The AngloSaxon Chronicle 7. MS E
Book SynopsisPart of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Collaborative Series, which now includes editions of the main texts through from A to F.This volume offers a new edition of the E-text of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, commonly known as the Peterborough Chronicle. The E-text is of enormous importance in Chronicle studies: in its early part it is the best representativeof the Northern Recension of the Chronicle; in continuing up to the second half of the twelfth century, its span is by far the longest of all the versions. Even more than other versions of the Chronicle, it reflects transitions ofvital interest to historians, linguists, and literary scholars. The E-text has not been edited in its entirety, except as a facsimile, for over a century. This semi-diplomatic edition offers a readable text with modern punctuation and capitalization. The interpolated material relating to Peterborough is clearly distinguished from the rest of the text. Indices of personal names, people-names, and place-names follow the text itself. The Introduction includes an account of the manuscript and a linguistic analysis of the E-text. The E-text cannot of course be studied in isolation. This volume is part of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Collaborative Series and with its publicationthe Series now includes editions of the main texts through from A to F. A substantial section of the Introduction to the volume is devoted to a detailed discussion of E's complex textual relationships with the other versions of the Chronicle, and also with other relevant documents such as Peterborough Charters and twelfth-century Latin chronicles. Dr SUSAN IRVINE is Senior Lecturer in the Department of English, University College, London.Trade ReviewLikely to become the new standard edition of the E text. * BULLETIN CODICOLOGIQUE (SCRIPTORIUM) *This new edition is a work of impressive scholarship and destined to become indispensable. * EARLY MEDIEVAL EUROPE *Impressive, and it is likely that it will become the principal edition of E for some decades to come. [...] Irvine's scholarship, always so modestly presented, is meticulous, erudite and accessible, and the volume a major contribution to literary and textual studies. * THE MEDIEVAL REVIEW *Should prove useful to teachers of Anglo-Saxon language and history. * MEDIUM AEVUM *
