  • Palaeography for Family and Local Historians

The History Press Ltd Palaeography for Family and Local Historians

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFamily and Local Historians frequently encounter the challenge posed by the writing, and sometimes the translation, of the records which might most enable them to make further progress with their research. Many pamphlets, booklets and even books have been produced over the past century to help with old handwriting and abbreviations, but this new work, written by an author who has for years run courses on the subject, is the most practical and comprehensive yet for family and local historians. Based on some fifty facsimile reproductions of documents of graduated difficulty, culled from many useful sources, it provides transcripts, and translations where appropriate, together with advice on methods of transcribing. The alphabet, with commentary, of the numerous types of letter to be found in the examples (many being in the secretary and court hands which so often cause problems), and illustrations of forms of abbreviation will greatly help to unravel the difficulties of reading. Many documents before 1733 were written in Latin and the author includes an outline of the differences between classical and medieval usage and a vocabulary to cover the section in Latin. There are examples, from the 1400s to the 1700s, of a wide range of hands found in the most usual categories of record used by family historians, such as parish registers, wills and court rolls, and in many others which disclose helpful information on families and localities. Those who use this book will not need to be persuaded of the great enjoyment to be derived from pursuing research into family or local history and the pleasures of piecing together evidence to throw new light on old times. They may also find great enjoyment in the deciphering of documents, the means to that end. For the solitary searcher or a member of a class or local society, this will be the standard work upon which to rely for many decades to come.

Book SynopsisWho invented the ''House of Windsor'' as a royal name? Who founded Westminster Abbey? Which king had twenty-one illegitimate children? David Halliam answers all these questions and more. Here is a continuous history of the English monarchy, showing how the nine dynasties rose and fell. The book describes the most memorable features of the life and times of each king or queen - from Egbert, crowned in 802 and considered the first king of England, to Queen Elizabeth II - as well as recording the extraordinary lives of their queens, consorts, mistresses and bastard children. It also tells the story of the Saxons, describes what has happened to the monarchs'' mortal remains, and relates many lively incidents of royal history that rarely appear in the text books.Read of the saintly Edward the Confessor, who is believed to have refused to consummate his marriage; of the rumbustious Henry VIII, given to beheading those who displeased him; of the ''little gentleman in black velvet'', who caused the death of William III; and of Queen Victoria''s strange servant, the ''Munshi'', Queen Emma, who endured a trial by ordeal; and Anne Boleyn, widely suspected of being a witch.A complete list of the monarchs'' reigns and a genealogical table showing the royal descent down thirty-seven generations from Egbert to Elizabeth II adds to the volume''s reference value.

    MIT Press Ltd Letterlocking

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe rich history of a centuries-old document security technology?folding and securing a letter into its own envelope for delivery?and a comprehensive guide to learning how to make your own locked letters. Before the invention of the gummed envelope in the 1830s, how did people secure their private letters? The answer is letterlocking?the ingenious process of securing a letter using a combination of folds, tucks, slits, or adhesives such as sealing wax, so that it becomes its own envelope. This almost entirely forgotten practice, used by historical figures ranging from Elizabeth I and her spies to Japanese samurai lords, was an everyday activity for centuries, across cultures, borders, and social classes. In Letterlocking, Jana Dambrogio and Daniel Starza Smith, experts who have pioneered the field over the last ten years, tell the fascinating story of letterlocking within epistolary history, drawing on real historical examples from all over the world.Fully illustrated with more than 300 images and diagrams, including a dictionary of sixty technical terms and concepts, Letterlocking describes the essential precepts of the practice and provides sources of practical support needed for beginner and advanced users of letterlocking. The authors also advocate for the understanding of letterlocking and for its inclusion in a range of intellectual and cultural research, from conservation science and archival databases to historical television shows. By the end of the book, readers will learn how to make locked letters, study letters that may have been locked, and categorize those letters using systems the authors developed while studying more than 250,000 historic letters.Letterlocking is accompanied by a website, freely accessible scholarly articles, and instructional videos and diagrams, as well as foldable tear-out sheets with instructions on how to fold and lock models of extant historical letters.

  • An Encyclopaedia of World Bridges

Pen & Sword Books Ltd An Encyclopaedia of World Bridges

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBridges are one of the most important artefacts constructed by man, the structures having had an incalculable effect on the development of trade and civilisation throughout the world. Their construction has led to continuing advances in civil engineering technology, leading to bigger spans and the use of new materials. Their failures, too, whether from an inadequate understanding of engineering principles or as a result of natural catastrophes or warfare, have often caused immense hardship as a result of lost lives or broken communications. In this book, a sister publication to his earlier An Encyclopaedia of British Bridges (Pen & Sword 2019), David McFetrich gives brief descriptions of some 1200 bridges from more than 170 countries around the world. They represent a wide range of different types of structure (such as beam, cantilever, stayed and suspension bridges). Although some of the pictures are of extremely well-known structures, many are not so widely recognisable and a separate section of the book includes more than seventy lists of bridges with distinctly unusual characteristics in their design, usage and history.

  • Food and Faith in Christian Culture

Columbia University Press Food and Faith in Christian Culture

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis excellent collection of essays shows the remarkable variety of ways in which food and meals have served to create and express identity for Christians. From the Middle Ages to the present, and from the Reformation to Orthodoxy to evangelicalism, contributors explore the diversity and the ubiquity of food's connection to faith. -- The Revd Canon Andrew McGowan, Trinity College, The University of Melbourne Ken Albala and Trudy Eden serve a delightful potpourri of thought-provoking and insightful essays. Widely separated in time and space, they are held together by common themes, such as bodily health, fasting, and commensality, and are peopled by a wild array of monks, noblemen, adventurers, bishops, vegetarians, medical professionals, Maoris, and missionaries, to name just a few. This much needed collection deserves to be widely read by anyone interested in food, history, and religion. Well-done! -- Andrew F. Smith Eating History: Thirty Turning Points in the Making of American Cuisine Altogether, the essays are topical, well written, and stimulating. They nicely capture the diversity, nuance, and complexity surrounding the place and role of dietary practices in Christian culture. -- Raymond A. • The Oxford Encyclopedia of Global Perspectives on

Oxford University Press Inc The Oxford Encyclopedia of Global Perspectives on

Book SynopsisIn this increasingly regulated, but contested, climate, teacher education has become a field of study separate from the study of learning or teaching itself. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Global Perspectives on Teacher Education includes new articles on innovative, grounded, and theory-based work being done by established global scholars who are interrogating educational issues related to teacher education. A major aim of the project is to pave the way for scholars to learn from each other, recognizing not only similarities but also differences in perspectives, and in doing so, encourage those working in teacher education to create more sustainable, focused, and collaborative approaches to the merging of theory and practice. The Encyclopedia is international in scope and encompasses the breadth of significant scholarship in the field of teacher education from both well-known and emerging scholars. Comprehensive in nature, it includes new foundational essays on the most pressing issues impacting teacher education and includes analytic essays from across the globe. Topics include a balance of critical, historical, psychological, and sociological perspectives. Written with both early-career and more experienced scholars in mind, the collection provides international perspectives on crucial topics such as social justice and equity in teacher education, and features a number of scholars from Indigenous communities and the Global South. As teacher education is increasingly held responsible for everything from falling PISA rankings, widening achievement gaps, and lower student outcomes to even poverty itself, this volume is particularly timely in its collection of the most significant thinking and research in the field.Trade ReviewI would synthesize the book's benefits into two main categories: perspectives and availability. In terms of the perspectives, the book provides the reader with an assortment of views on teacher education; some are innovative and inspiring, some are combined and synthesized, and some are updated and newly developed from canonical works. As for availability, all collected works appear online as part of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Education, which makes access convenient. * Yang Gao, Dalian Maritime University, Journal of International Students *Table of ContentsAgency in Teacher Education Applying Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) in the Practice of Teacher Education in the United States Art-Informed Pedagogies in the Preparation of Teachers Blended Learning in Teacher Education Bourdieu and Education Community-based Experiential Learning in Teacher Education Community-Engaged Teacher Preparation Complexity Theory and Teacher Education Conceptions and Models of Teacher Education Concepts of Care in Teacher Education Core Reflection Approach in Teacher Education 'Crisis' in Teacher Education, The Critical Media Literacy in Teacher Education, Theory, and Practice Culturally Responsive Classroom Management Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in Teacher Education Deleuze and Guattari and Teacher Education Early Childhood Teacher Education in Global Perspective Educating Teachers for High-Poverty Schools Education and Activism Emotion and Teacher Education Ethnographic Inquiry in Teacher Education Exploration of Evolving Approaches to Teacher Identity Revealed in Literature on Teaching from 2010 to 2018, An Gender and Sexual Diversity in Teacher Education Global Orientations, Local Challenges, and Promises in Initial Teacher Education Globalization, Digital Technology, and Teacher Education in the United States Heuristic Inquiry in Teacher Education Impact of Educational Neoliberalism on Teachers in Singapore, The Indigenous Australian Studies, Indigenist Standpoint Pedagogy, and Student Resistance Indigenous Teacher Education in Canada and Aotearoa New Zealand Influence of Pedagogical Entrepreneurship in Teacher Education, The Influence of Teacher Education on Teacher Beliefs, The Inquiry-Based Learning and its Enhancement of the Practice of Teaching John Dewey and Teacher Education Learner Engagement in Teacher Education Longitudinal Study of Teachers Mentoring in Teacher Education, The Role of Online Networks in Teacher Education Performance-Based Assessment in Preparing Teachers Postcolonial Theory in Teacher Education Preparing Assessment-Literate Teachers Preparing Pre-service Teachers for Rural Schools Preparing Teachers for Collaborative Classrooms Professional Experience for International Students within the Australian Teacher Education Context Professionalizing Teacher Education Accountability Real-Time Coaching for Pre-Service Teachers Research on Racism in Teacher Education in the United States Reviews of Teachers' Beliefs School Based Pre-service (Initial) Teacher Training Programs in the United States of America and the United Kingdom School-Based Professional Development Programs for Beginning Teachers Simple and Complex Views of Teacher Development Simulation as a Strategy in Teacher Education Spiritual Development and Preparation of Teachers Standards and Benchmarks in Teacher Training Programs Status of Teachers, The Status, Content, and Evaluation of Lesson Study in Japan on Teacher Professional Development Systemic Functional Linguistics in Teacher Education Teacher Education and Inclusion in the Asia-Pacific Region Teacher Education and Inclusivity Teacher Education and Lesson Study Teacher Education and Refugee Students Teacher Education and the Global Impact of Teach For All Teacher Education and Whiteness and Whiteness in Teacher Education in the United States Teacher Education for Bi/Multilingual Students Teacher Education for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in the United States Teacher Education in Australia Teacher Education in Finland and Future Directions Teacher Education in Germany Teacher Education in México Teacher Education in New Zealand Teacher Education in Russia Teacher Education in Singapore Teacher Education Reform in the Asia-Pacific Region Teacher Education Research Teacher Identity Research and Development Teacher Leadership and Professionality Teacher Preparation for Physical Education in an Increasingly Sedentary World in Singapore Teacher Quality in Singapore Teacher Research in Teacher Education Teacher Training for the Transformation of Schools and Communities Teachers' Knowledge for the Digital Age Theories of Generative Change in Teacher Education Transforming Teacher Education in South Africa Translanguaging in Educating Teachers of Language-Minoritized Students Trauma-Informed Practice for Pre-service Teachers Well-being and the Preparation of Teachers

  • A Dictionary of Creation Myths

Book SynopsisGod made Heaven, and then, after measuring the space underneath with a ball of thread, he began to form the earth. A mole asked to help, and God gave him the thread to hold while he wove the patterns of the earth. Sometimes the mole would let out too much thread, and finally the earth grew too large for the space under heaven. The mole was so upset that he hid under the earth. God sent the bee to look for him; he wanted the mole''s advice on what to do about the mistake. The bee found the mole and he just laughed at the idea of advising God. The bee, however, hid in a flower and overheard the mole mumbling to himself about what he would do if he were God. ''Iwould squeeze the earth,'' he said. ''That would make mountains and valleys and make it smaller at the same time.'' When the bee heard this, he went directly to God and told him. God did what the mole had said, and everything fit fine. The myth of Rumanian Creation in which God weaves the earth from a ball of thread is just one theTrade ReviewAs a quick tool of reference, the book is likely to render valuable service. * The Journal of Indo-European Studies *

  • The FWord

Oxford University Press Inc The FWord

Book SynopsisIn a thoroughly updated edition of The F-Word, Jesse Sheidlower offers a rich, revealing look at the f-bomb and its illimitable uses. Since the fifteenth century, no other word has been adapted, interpreted, euphemized, censored, and shouted with as much ardor or force, with many notorious examples from throughout history, from the satiric sixteenth-century poetry to more recent uses.Trade Review"Sheidlower's 'The F Word' has provided inordinate delight and distraction from my normal working day."--The New Yorker "It wasn't so long ago that the dear old F-bomb was barely uttered outside of private conversation, let alone written into literature or film or television. Here to educate you on its illustrious lineage--not to mention its present and future--is The F Word, a handsome, concise and erudite history of the term."--Very Short List "Funny, yet surprisingly informative... The F Word is an encyclopedia for all things, well, f***ed."--Entertainment Weekly "God bless lexicographers, you know? The F-Word is no thin bathroom book, either, but a meticulously researched 320-page hardcover reference tome, robust enough to sit alongside the OED." --SF Weekly "The F Word is a gem in its lexicographical expertise and its scholarly explication. There will be nothing better, at least until Jesse Sheidlower produces a fourth edition."--Jonathon Green, editor of Chambers Slang Dictionary "A thoroughgoing exploration of the most celebrated verb/noun/adjective/adverb/interjection/infix in English, with ample citations of its use over the past five and a half centuries."--John McIntyre, You Don't Say blog "Sheidlower's introduction undertakes a swift and no-nonsense debunking of some common myths about the word...This is vulgarity at its most erudite."--Inside Higher Ed "The detailed lexicon of the word's many uses and compounds is fascinating."--Milwaukee Shepherd Express "Investigat[es] every possible combination, situation, and divagation in which the most notorious expletive in English can be found. For a word that can't be printed in most newspapers, it's certainly leading a rich, full life." --Erin McKean, Boston Globe "A must for anyone interested in the most notorious of English obscenities. This is not one of those pro forma 'revisions' that correct a few errors, toss in a few added items, and add a new preface; the text of the dictionary is twice as large as the second edition, over a hundred new words and senses have been added, and it now aims to cover the entire English-speaking world. This book makes me proud to be a part of a civilization that could produce such a thing." --Stephen Dodson, The Millions

Each of the five model publishers agreed to treat the book as a real project accepted for publication and to compile a log of procedures they followed. These logs include correspondence, budgets, forms, layouts, and specifications, providing an insider's look at the path a manuscript takes through the various departments of each press, from editorial to marketing.
