  • Quickthorn Connecting Threads

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisConnecting Threads brings together twelve textile projects completed between 1981 and 2024. Each one acts as a social history document, providing tactile evidence of often untold stories of people on the margins, unexamined histories and overlooked places, all through stitch. The resulting work is both personal and political. It ranges from tiny colorful hand embroidered fragments recording everyday life in South London and Yorkshire, to monumental, site-specific banners made with construction workers in the north of England. As a collection it describes the author?s life in stitch and details how an artist-embroiderer works and thinks creatively, how projects are managed and take shape and some of the hurdles encountered in socially engaged practice. The projects described in this book encompass themes of identity and belonging, health and wellbeing, sustainability, community cohesion and social inequality, offering sensory testaments of life today. Unusually, in a career that has garnered international recognition, Setterington remains modest, committed to the next collaboration, the sharing of textile languages, the rituals of ordinary life.

  • Tapestry Weaving

    Search Press Ltd Tapestry Weaving

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisKirsten Glasbrook demonstrates the ancient art of tapestry weaving using wool yarn, fine linen and cotton on simple rectangular frames with notches, or purpose-built looms for larger tapestries. She shows step by step how to weave gorgeous tapestries, from choosing colours and winding warps through to creating images and finishing off with tassels and beads. Readers will learn how to create horizontal and diagonal lines, curves, motifs, shading, outlines, borders and more. There is a gallery of beautiful finished works to inspire everyone from beginners to experienced weavers. This best-selling title has been re-issued to inspire a whole new generation.Trade ReviewWhen modern crafters think of tapestry weaving, they often think of the large-scale medieval tapestries that hang in museums or historical landmarks, but the history of tapestry stretches back much further, to ancient Egypt and other world cultures. In her introduction to tapestry weaving, Glasbrook provides an overview of basic loom setup, weaving techniques, and tapestry design in the form of a sampler project featuring abstract designs. Unlike other forms of weaving, tapestry weaving does not require an expensive loom—one can be made from a simple frame or even stiff cardboard. Glasbrook covers loom preparation, including winding the warp and warping the loom, selection of warp and weft yarn, and techniques for weaving a variety of patterns via a small sampler project. A gallery of Glasbrook’s work, along with tips and techniques for weaving similar projects, follows. VERDICT Tapestry isn’t generally covered in beginner weaving books, and there’s plenty of information here to get novices started with this fascinating and ancient craft. * Library Journal USA *Tapestry Weaving by Kirsten Glasbrook provides a logical and systematic approach to the craft. The book explains the weaving of woolen cloths, linen and cotton on simple rectangular frames with notches, or specially built looms for bigger work. The book explains many techniques, which are accompanied by step by step photographs such as such as deformation of weft lines, vertical appertures, diagonal shapes and curves. The book is suitable for beginners, but will also inspire experienced weavers too. * Textiel Plus *

Book SynopsisThe Royal School of Needlework (RSN) is recognized internationally as a centre of excellence for embroidery, and Goldwork is the fourth title in a series of books showcasing the RSN’s techniques and contemporary flair. Author Emi Nimura is a Graduate Apprentice and expert teacher with the RSN; she provides the reader with a thorough grounding in goldwork stitches and techniques, three beautiful projects and numerous inspiring finished pieces. The book features an introduction to the RSN and its prestigious heritage. It reveals the history and context of goldwork, the materials and tools that are used, and provides clear, highly illustrated instructions that will allow the reader to achieve the technical expertise that goldwork demands. In addition, there are numerous examples of Emi's exquisite work throughout the book, together with a varied range of finished works by other embroiderers that showcases the diversity of goldwork design in both a traditional and a contemporary context.Trade ReviewFrom the UK's own centre of excellence for embroidery, the Royal School of Needlework, and the brilliant Emi Nimura, comes one of the RSN's latest library additions: Goldwork. Delve into the history and evolution of this majestic craft and give it a go yourself with Emi's three incredible projects. Make light work of getting to grips with the gorgeous technique under Emi's expert guidance every step of the way. -- Love Embroidery * Love Embroidery *This is a book for those times when you want to know you're in safe hands, to be shown the right way. Here every aspect of goldwork is carefully broken down and thoroughly explained: techniques, materials, equipment. It's a book that demystifies the skills involved in achieving professional results. It aims to build knowledge page-by-page and give you the confidence to create ornate and opulent work for yourself. * Stitch Magazine *My friends tell me that if I was stranded on a desert island I would be very happy as long as I had goldwork materials with me. If you ignore the fact that the threads would tarnish quickly, my friends are probably right. Some excellent books are already available on metal thread embroidery, and this is not the first one that has been released under the RSN banner or by embroiderers closely associated with the RSN. I wasn't sure where this new book "Techniques, Projects & Pure Inspiration: Goldwork" by Emi Nimura would fit in, however it's a beautiful book with a unique perspective on this technique. The author studied textile design and was a beaded jewellery artist before becoming an Apprentice at the Royal School of Needlework, and is now the co-ordinator and tutor of RSN classes in Japan. Although her beautiful embroidery, in a variety of techniques, has appeared in books by other embroiderers, this is her first book as author. The format and introduction are fairly standard for a book associated with the RSN. Following the introduction and a short history of goldwork, there are sections on Materials and Tools, the various options for how to set up your frame and a section called Inspiration and Design, which covers topics such as order of work, design transfer and how to make a velvet board. Each section contains clear pictures and detailed instructions. The next part of the book is devoted to techniques. All the expected things are included, but I love that instead of just showing a technique, all in the same metal thread or of different threads of the same colour, the author has given examples of combining differently coloured threads and combining them with beads. She mixed chips with beads and French knots. The examples really do make you feel like experimenting. In the project part of the book you begin to really see the full extent of the author's skills. Her designs are visually stunning, beautifully presented and really bring together the beaded jewellery designer and embroiderer. There is a series of little brooch designs, a corsage of autumn leaves and an acorn embellishment for a purse; all with templates, photographs, and clearly written instructions. This is goldwork that is not just to be framed on the wall but something you can proudly wear. My favourite is the jewel-like corsage of autumn leaves. It is just beautiful; combining silver, gold and copper with beads and rhinestones as well as wooden beads wrapped in metal threads that would normally be associated with stumpwork. Completing the book are pictures from the RSN collection as well as pieces from other embroiderers. So while this book is similar to other books on goldwork - it stands out because of its beautiful designs, giving the traditional technique a new twist. I hope we see more book from this very talented lady. -- Rosie McKeller * Book Threads *Brought to you by the Royal School of Needlework, this unique read showcases the ins-and-outs of goldwork stitching. Inside you'll find the history of this impressive technique, the materials and tools that are used, and finally detailed step-by-step instructions to allow the reader to achieve the expertise this method demands. She is a very generous person, detailing every step needed to create these pieces for ourselves, and a bonus is that she is in the UK, so there isn't the usual frustration of not being able to acquire supplies - for the most part. Yet another bonus is that her publisher has not given in to the latest trend of grey text and pale, barely there illustrations, as seems de rigeur in some contemporary textile books. If you are a fan of Priscilla's work, you will not be disappointed. And if you aren't - why aren't you? -- Lynsey Adams * Amazon Customer Review *We learn to use a variety of mixed media in this practical guide. Plain papers and fabrics are transformed through colour, texture, mark making, free-motion embroidery and hand stitching. Book SynopsisWhether you are a beginner or more experienced, any stitching project, no matter how simple, can be enhanced by a well-chosen colour palette, however, many people are nervous or even scared of colour. Textile designer Karen Barbé regularly teaches embroidery workshops and knows first-hand the fears and frustrations of beginners - as well as accomplished crafters - when starting a new project. Karen makes choosing and creating colour palettes a fun and enjoyable part of the design process. Colour Confident Stitching is divided into three parts: Understanding Colour; Feeling Colour and Stitching with Colour. The first two sections guide the reader through colour theory as well as choosing and using colour more instinctively. Stitching with Colour includes five stiching projects that will encourage the reader to explore colour and build confidence through exercise and experiment. All colours are referenced to DMC floss colours. Inspirational photographs are accompanied by stitching illustrations and step-by-step photographs for the colour choosing process as well as stitching projects. Trade Review"Equal parts embroidery reference and palette theory, this book shows you to train the eye towards more fulfilling stitching choices. From pink spoons to melon sherbets, it's a practical approach to colour chemistry." * Dressmaker *"Barbé has assembled an accessible primer to color theory, useful not only to embroiders but to any fiber artists working with color." * Library Journal *"It is a pleasure to review this fabulous new book...analysis of color palettes and how to develop them is very inspiring. I think it might make you happy, too! The book is called Colour Confident Stitching by Karen Barbé. It’s…good. In fact, it’s Really Good. The book is primarily a book on colour theory and grouping and choosing colours. That said, it’s not a complicated technical book on the scientific side of colour theory. It’s a very practical book, it’s easy to understand, easy to read, and eye-opening.” * www.needlenthread.com *“If you are anything like me, you’ll know the feeling of rifling through your yarn collection . . . not quite sure what is going to work. Book SynopsisPacked with colour and style, this gorgeous and inspiring new book from Scottish artist Moy Mackay delves deep into the world of felt painting. The book includes an introduction to Moy’s use of colour and texture, as well as a useful section detailing what inspires her and how she forms these initial ideas into a composition. There are 4 easy-to-follow but inspiring step-by-step projects, along with extensive galleries of Moy’s vibrant work. Unlike the broad range of her previous book, the focus here is flowers – in still life, in the landscape and as botanical portraits – and the book includes an in-depth techniques section on creating a range of different flower and leaf shapes, so that the reader can go on to produce their own unique masterpieces. "Moy's passionate use of colour and the deep texture created by felting are what draw me to her work. I also like the way that she concentrates on her surroundings for her subject matter – her work is very free."-Kaffe FassettTrade ReviewNovember 2014 Subtitled ‘Creating Floral Works Using Fleece, Fibres and Threads’. Moy Mackay’s ‘felt paintings’ are works of art. This book contains many images of her work. You can discover how to create a ‘felt painting’ with the four step-by-step projects. See the in-depth techniques used, learn what equipment is needed, be inspired and discover how to add detail with machine or hand stitching. Marvellous colourful and imaginative work. Highly recommended. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *December 2014 Moy Mackay’s previous book ‘Art in Felt and Stitch’ (reviewed in WOW in September 2012) looked at felting a variety of subjects. In this follow-on book, flowers are the focus. From the outset, the author sets out her more unconventional approach to felting. Using felt fibres to ‘paint’ a picture, she talks of how to use these and other silks and threads to include as much detail as possible. She also uses scissors as an integral part of her process to achieve clear lines and angles. She takes us through the felting techniques from placement of fibres, wet felting, followed by needle felting and then embellishing through stitch. As a book geared towards flowers, the different flower forms are explored and felting techniques explained to achieve the shape and look of flowers as diverse as daisies, thistles and lavender. This is a particularly good section, providing enough different shapes for the reader to be able to tackle most flowers. The author’s reworking of a Victorian-style flower study is a work of art before it’s felted, and to see the project explained from start to finish puts the different stages into context. The book covers three main areas of flowers in art and adapts them to felting. In addition to the ‘Victorian Study’, there are ‘Flowers in Still Life’ and ‘Flowers in Landscape’. Each of these contains a sample project, fully illustrated with step-by-step instructions and photographs, together with a large variety of finished pieces for each section. This is a very bright and colourful book, full of beautiful felted pieces that show you how to felt flowers in a variety of artistic styles. * Workshop On The Web *February 2015 Textile artist Moy Mackay's book Art in Felt and Stitch was a huge success, and this follow-up volume delves a little deeper into her methods and inspirations, Moy's paintings are a vivid fusion of felting and stitching techniques with fine art; what really sings from these pages is the tremendous sense of energy her work contains, and this is an exuberance that extends to the reader. When you see what the author achieves with carding felt and hand stitching, you can't help but want to give these methods a try yourself. With a complete lack of any kind of pretension, Moy helps the reader construct their own works of art with ease, breaking down her techniques in a very understandable way, and encouraging experimentation. The images and illustrations are sumptuous, and the book provides a rich seam of inspiration which anybody with even a vaguely creative notion will want to follow. Whether you're looking for something different to do in between heavy quilting projects, or want to supplement your existing skill set, then you should give this book a try; its dreamlike images and good advice will stay with you. * Popular Patchwork *April 2015 Moy's 'felt paintings' blend traditional felting techniques using fleece, threads and fibres with hand and free-machine embroidery to create dynamic, tactile images. Colour guru Kaffe Fassett describes Moy's style as 'very free' with a 'passionate use of colour and deep texture'. As Kaffe says, Moy 'concentrates on her surroundings for her subject matter'. Indeed, in this especially, Moy's fine art training shines through. Flowers are not outlined and separated from their backgrounds, but interpreted as part of their environment whether in their natural habitat or in bouquet form in a still-life. Although outlines and details may be emphasised by stitch, the flowers are always completely integrated with the ground. In 'Summer Meadow', for example, suggestions of individual blooms are created using additional stitch in the foreground, diminishing subtly in size and quantity tumbling around a house at the picture's centre. The landscape is then interpreted more loosely, the horizon and skyscape melding as naturally as if real. Full-page images of Moy's jewel-like pictures are invitingly textural, encouraging further experimentation. Full instructions are given for creating both individual flower forms and landscapes. Introductory chapters cover not only basic techniques and materials but are also a guide to developing your own design style. * Stitch *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials and equipment 10 Inspiration 22 Colour 30 Adding texture and detail 36 Techniques 40 Essential flower forms 64 Leaves 82 Flower study 86 Flowers in still life 94 Flowers in the landscape 112 Index 128

The birds all have optional ribbon hangers for display.Trade ReviewWhether or not you make your own felt or just enjoy stitching, the twenty different birds featured in this book might appeal as characters with a folksy feel. In designing the projects the author, Corinne Lapierre, has combined her love of felt, folk embroidery and birds. The first part of the book lists the necessary materials, tools and equipment required before moving on to the basic techniques for making the birds. This is followed by instructions for the embroidery stitches used in each project. Throughout this section the author adds a series of tips to help the maker work through the different techniques smoothly. The second part of the book concentrates on the different bird projects. For each bird there is a list of the materials and equipment required followed by step-by-step instructions for making. Cutting templates are also provided at the end of the book. The author points out that the birds themselves are relatively easy to make, but their characters are defined by the colours and embroidery stitches used. The information provided throughout the book is clearly presented and well illustrated. Each fun project should be achievable for anyone with a basic knowledge of stitch and embroidery. * Journal of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *This book is a delight from cover to cover. It starts by explaining what items are needed to complete the projects and then goes on, in simple terms, to talk about techniques from drawing templates to cutting out the felt, to embellishing with hand sewn embroidery. These stitches are clearly explained at the beginning of the book in easy to follow instructions and photos. There are even simple instructions for making birds feet. Once this has all be laid out for you, there follows 20 easy to make colourful birds which are so pleasing to the eye! I particularly like the use of sequins on the pigeon to add texture and shimmer. All of the templates needed to complete the projects are at the back of the book, these can easily be copied or traced as they are so simple. All in all, a lovely book! -- Shirley Marriott * Customer review *A great little book. Every process is clearly described, with beautiful photos and diagrams. Perfect for experienced and beginners alike. The patterns are clear and easy to follow. The birds are beautiful - I love the robin - that will be the one I will make first. All of the templates to make each bird, are at the back of the book, and they can be easily traced, or scanned so that you don't need to damage such a lovely book. -- Sue Rowland * Customer review *What a superb book, the techniques section is very informative and will certainly be a great help for me, a novice embroiderer. The illustrations are bright and clear, fantastic photography. At the back of the book you will find the templates for each of the projects. I can’t wait to make my first bird, which I think will be the peacock. -- Sandra Dennis * Customer review *Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a beautiful book full of lovely birds to create. The techniques are clear with lots of pictures and step-by-step instructions to follow for the basic creating, then each bird has its own instructions that are easy to follow. I would recommend to anyone who wanted to have a go. The clear photographs and instructions are just so easy to follow. This book would be a lovely present and you could give the person a few felt squares, some thread and let them start creating right away!! Love it!! -- Moyra Blayney * Customer review *Received my book today the projects are lovely and more importantly achievable. I love the fact that the project is all hand stitched. My nieces and I have already picked which ones we are going to do and are off out to get our materials this afternoon. These projects are going to provide many happy sewing hours for us and some great little gifts which we plan to give away as random acts of kindness. Search Press have produced yet another fab book. -- Wendy Burt * Customer review *The square format of this beautiful book makes it feel different and inside it is filled with the enthusiasm of the author for her felt birds. There are twenty very attractive birds to make. Each of them a pleasing mix of well chosen felt colours and embroidery stitches. Techniques and stitches used are illustrated with excellent photographs and easy to follow instructions. The hand drawn illustrations add a personal touch to the book. Full size templates are included for each project. This is a book to make you smile. A clever use of simple embroidery stitches such as fly, seed, chain and French knots are used effectively to give each of the birds their individual characters. I very much liked the proud peacock, a pheasant with attitude and the trendy flamingo. Making felt birds is not my usual thing but I could be tempted by my favourite, the hen, whose comforting shape and embroidery really epitomises 'folk art'. -- Carol Winter * SEW Region Magazine (June 2019) * Time for a book review! And today’s book review is all about fun! Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a new book packed full of – you guessed it! – folk embroidered felt birds! And they’re delightful! If you love birds (I love birds) and you like the look of folk embroidery, and you like working with felt to make three dimensional objects, then you need to add this book to your library. It’s one of those books that just makes me happy when I flip through it. Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a project book. The projects are small, three-dimensional birds made from felt, stuffed and embroidered. The cover is the seller for me. I know, I know! Don’t judge a book by its cover and all that. But really – a flamingo AND a puffin? With those legs? And those feet? I see this book being perfect for those who like to make. The birds are perfect for whimsical ornaments and delightful gifts. What a great way to pass on a bit of cheer to a friend on a birthday – or out of the blue for no reason at all! The book features a fairly vast array of projects focusing on twenty different types of birds, which are all recognizable. From the humble robin, to the pheasant and flamingo, the parrot, the toucan, the gentle dove and the flamboyant peacock, the gangly stork, the majestic swan, the hen, the goose, the owl, the gull and goldfinch – they’re all there, waiting for you to bring them to life! Like any good project book, Folk Embroidered Felt Birds begins with a section on materials. There’s nothing too out of the ordinary here – felt (the author recommends a wool / viscose blend); embroidery floss; wire (for legs), filling, ribbon, sequins, wire tape, and other very regular stuff. From materials and tools, we move into techniques: transferring the template designs to felt, to sewing, filling, stuffing, making legs and feet, appliqué, and all the techniques necessary for creating a three dimensional bird. Every aspect of instruction is presented in very clear, step-by-step photos with text. The text is succinct quite minimal; it’s very precise and easy to follow. And of course, there’s a selection of embroidery stitch instructions with step-by-step photos as well. And then – the projects! For each project, you’ll find a list of tools and supplies required to make the bird, along with a list of the templates to use from the back of the book. The templates in the back of the book are clean line drawings of the different bird parts, that you trace and cut out for patterns. Along with the materials and templates lists, you’ll find a page of instructions that take you through constructing the bird, referring to the techniques covered at the beginning of the book. The projects in the book are all darling! And the instructions are excellent and very accessible. If you enjoy making things and you like birds, folk art, and felt, this book would be right up your alley! I’m pretty sure it will put a smile on your face! See the full review here. -- Mary Corbet * Mary Corbet's Needle n Thread *Anybody who cut their sewing teeth on felt will enjoy this book; inside it are twenty folk art style birds to make up and display. If, like me you have loved working with felt since early childhood you will probably want to dive in but if you are new to it read the first section of the book before picking up a needle. This will tell you what type of felt to use (a mix of viscose and wool sold on the author’s website) and how to work with it, do several embroidery stitches, sew up the patterns and make the wire legs and feet. When you have the basics sorted you can progress to the patterns. Each one features a page-sized photograph of the bird in a suitable setting, a list of materials, tools and templates and written instructions. These usually come with a simple diagram or two, but unless you are a total beginner you won’t have problems making them up. The first section lays it all out very clearly with staged photographs, including some excellent ones for the embroidery stitches which are so good I wish there was a whole book of them! I think the family pet could learn how to embroider with these…the birds themselves are mostly those familiar to UK residents including robin, blue tit, heron, swan, peacock, hen, goose, herring gull and owl. A few exotics are included such as a flamingo, toucan and parrot, and many are suitable for certain occasions such as Christmas (robin and dove) Easter (hen and goose) and new baby (stork). At the front is a handy double page spread showing all the birds for easy choice, and at the back are all the templates life size. No sewing machine is required for these projects, and all are ideal quick makes for somebody who knows a few basics but is not confident enough for larger projects including older children (be careful with that wire though). Anybody in more need of something easier can go to the author’s website and buy kits of some of these birds as well as lots of other creatures and Christmas decorations. Bundles of wool/viscose felt and kits are available from www.corinnelapierre.com -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Tweet, Tweet You're guranteed to love Corinne Lapierre's latest book, Folk Embroidered Felt Birds! The getting started section easily breaks down the tools and materials and eases you into starting wonderfully. Clear photos with concise text, I think this is perfect for a true beginner to embroidery. I think if you are familiar with cross stitch this could be a natural progression as you will be used to evenweave and linen fabrics. The charts look clear and easy to follow and the construction instructions are also concise and efficient. I do like how this book is simple and straight to the point, it would be welcoming to a beginner as it is a very user friendly book. I would have liked to learn a little more about the origins of this technique but that could be the geek in me. -- Sarah Gage * Amazon *This is a great guide to a fresh and adaptable embroidery style that is suitable for beginners and established crafters alike. Based on traditional Japanese motifs, Sashiko embroidery can take on the look of Japanese, Scandinavian, European contemporary or many other decor trends, and this book gives examples of how you can incorporate that with your choice of colour or embellishment placement. The book starts with beautifully photographed projects, and all of them are small and simple - less intimidating than many other embroidery project books! The book then goes in to materials and techniques, and as you would expect from a Search Press book there are lots of clear photographs and diagrams to help explain everything. The book finishes with diagrams, charts and explanations of how to create the projects in the front of the book, and these would be easily adaptable to other things - I plan on using some of the charts to add an extra something to some face masks I have. -- Natalia Forrest * Amazon *I am fascinated by Sashiko embroidery and pattern darning in general so this book is ideal as it develops both those ideas. There are nearly 40 small projects to work through involving a variety of finished objects. Most of these are really small, like buttons and brooches, but there are also more involved projects like purses and a handbag. The projects give no indication of time required or skill level but the very clear pictures give an indication of the complexity involved. All the projects are clearly photographed at the front of the book and the instructions to make these projects are in a separate section at the back of the book. In between these two sections there is information on the tools and materials needed to produce the items included in the book. Each project also clearly states what is needed to make that item. As an introduction to an embroidery technique I thought this was well thought out with some very interesting projects that wouldn't take too long to finish and would help you develop your skills and interest level in this type of work. If you like working small projects this is a book I would recommend. -- Chris Jones * Amazon *Kogin is a style of Japanese sashiko embroidery with a geometric appearance. Simple and timeless, its clean lines and basic elegance is sure to appeal to modern tastes. You can use it to adorn so many things too, from tiny pins to pictures. It doesn’t take long to learn this straightforward but attractive type of embroidery, and there are plenty of smaller projects here that make up quickly. A lot of them are also of practical rather than decorative use, so you can make attractive buttons, hair ties, Christmas decorations, purses, bags and pincushions. Like all the books I have seen that originated in Japan this one follows a particular layout. At the front are photographs of all the projects, followed by the instructions and patterns. This means you get to whet your appetite by looking at many pages of colourful photographs. There is a short list of tools and materials, then a useful guide on how to prepare the thread and fabric, read the charts, work the stitches and get the tension right. The projects start simply with the smallest projects such as pins and hair ties, and progress through to the larger, more complex pieces. You don’t need to be an experienced embroiderer to tackle kogin work but some knowledge of making up projects and doing things like working with button kits, purse frames and zippers is a good idea. This is a lovely book suitable for anybody with a bit of stitching experience. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *This book is aimed at all kinds of expertise levels from beginners to long term kogin enthusiasts. I think there would be inspiration in it for sewing enthusiasts of all levels. The book is by Boutique-Sha. They have produced quite a few books with Search Press and are a craft and lifestyle publisher in Japan who have written hundreds of publications and had them translated into English. The content is great. It teaches you the skills you will need, explains the tools and techniques, and provides 25 inspiring projects you can make. The projects vary from little framed pictures to larger sewing projects like pouches and purses so there is a fab range of items to make no matter what your skill level. I imagine you would start (as I did) with a small project but return to this book again and again to make more items as your skills grow. The photography is really good quality in this book. There are lots of detailed clear photos in the hints and tips sections to explain the techniques, and the photography to show you the finished projects is really nicely set up too. The section which shows you how to make each project uses illustrations instead of photography and these are really well done too. To me the book works well because it covers such a wide variety of experience levels. A beginner could pick it up (like I did) and be really happy learning a great new skill, but an experienced person could also pick it up and find plenty of useful tips and lovely projects. This is a really great book. It has something for beginners, lots for experienced kogin lovers, small projects, big projects, it’s a really well thought out selection of skills and projects. I was a total newbie to the art of kogin and it taught me a great new skill which I think is beautiful. The projects use techniques which date back hundreds of years and make it somehow look traditional or vintage but modern too. As I said at the start, I thought the best way to review the book was to teach myself a new skill from it. So, I did. I decided to use the sample project pattern to make a piece to insert in a handbag mirror frame I had. I think it turned out really well, which is totally credit to this book. -- Jo Burgess * www.mrxstitch.com *Discover the art of kogin, a style of traditional Japanese sashiko embroidery with modern appeal. Filled with inspiring ideas, every embroiderer will love this craft. -- Tracy Shephard * Amazon *Modern Kogin is a new book from Boutique-Sha, a Japanese publisher of magazines and books on craft techniques and lifestyle, and Search Press. It introduces the Japanese embroidery technique which originated in the Edo period as a functional method of repairing and reinforcing fabrics. Kogin uses counted stitching techniques and careful placement of parallel lines to create striking geometric patterns which can be used to adorn a wide variety of objects. After a brief introduction to the technique and its history, Modern Kogin presents the projects covered in the book, from small brooches and hair ties to more complicated pieces including bags and pouches. While the items themselves are generally simple in their construction, requiring only a small amount of knowledge in order to finish the stitching into a completed object, the patterns are intricate and beautiful from the beginning although deceptively simple to stitch. Kogin embroidery may look complicated, but each piece is made up of nothing more than simple straight lines. While the work is simple, the effect is striking, especially when using bold colours against white fabric. The patterns include instructions alongside detailed explanation of how Kogin is worked, including tips and tricks to keep your stitches neat and the order in which to work them followed by step-by-step instruction for each project, including help on making up items such as bags, purses and biscornu pincushions. Modern Kogin is a perfect introduction for a beginner, providing help and assistance in completing the projects to a high standard and avoiding the pitfalls often experienced by those new to the form. -- Gemma Bridges * The SEW Region Magazine - Book Threads *Table of ContentsButterfly Brooches Square Brooches Scarf Pins Circle & Oval Brooches Geometric Patter Barrettes Button Hair Ties Memento Box Kogin Hoop Art Coffee Bean Sampler Floral Sampler Holiday Ornaments Elegant Ornaments Snowflake Pin Cushion Argyle Pin Cushion House Coasters Pot Holder Square Coasters Placemat Bookmarks Framed Brooches Classic Coin Purse Gusset Pouch Zippered Pouches Multipurpose Pouch Kogin Purse Tools & Materials Getting Started Stitching Kogin Sample Project Project Instructions

Book SynopsisWritten by expert shibori teacher Jane Callender, this beautiful, practical book is packed with both traditional and inventive stitch-resist techniques, a complete dyeing guide and an inspirational gallery of Jane’s work. This book contains all the information a beginner will need to get started - including tips on dyeing in small spaces and a guide to all the necessary health and safety considerations - but is also packed with innovative techniques and inspiring designs that will appeal to the experienced textile artist. The book is broken into three sections. The first shows you all the key stitch-resist techniques you need - from the basics right through to creating intricate designs – and all are clearly explained with photography and illustrations. Learn how to create a range of different shibori styles, oversew, make circles and other shapes, use grids, double needles, stencils and caps, bind fabrics, work with machine stitch, use fabric buffers and incorporate appliqué. The second section shows you how to use motifs to create pattern: learn how to create and position designs, including traditional arrangements such as Karamatsu and Tatewaku, create composite designs and get tips on how to plan your own patterns. Finally, the book contains a complete guide to dyeing – it contains recipes, tips and advice so that you can get the very best from every dye bath you make. Learn how to dye with both natural and synthetic indigo, in organic and synthetic vats. Also choose from a wide range of natural dyes, iron rust and dazzling Procion dyes, which can be used in combination or alone for amazing effects. Trade ReviewJane Callender is possessed of a unique talent. Since she was a student at West Surrey College of Art and Design, she has dedicated herself to the subtle arts of shibori and indigo dyeing. She is an acknowledged master of her craft. Her innovative award-winning work, admired both for its artistry and high level of technique, has been widely exhibited. A patient and accomplished teacher with all the necessary technical skills at her fingertips, she lectures and conducts workshops across the globe and through her website ‘Callishibori’ supplies shibori materials and tools to a worldwide audience. Well known as the author of the seminal 2000 Pattern Combinations, she has now written this superlative book. Clear, concise, instructive and inspiring, it is destined to be an essential manual and classic work of reference for both beginners and advanced practitioners for many years to come. -- John Gillow * Customer Review *For anyone who has ever pulled up and dyed a simple stitched resist, the beauty and complexity of Jane Callender's work is awe-inspiring. In this generous book, she shares, with great detail, her mastery of shibori techniques and dyeing. Attention to detail makes this an excellent guide for all levels. An introduction explains shibori as the interaction between compressed cloth and dye. The section entitled "Shibori Tradition", along with additional pages throughout the book, reveal the history of shibori worldwide and how politics, economics, and fashion affected design, including particular techniques developed by significant Japanese masters in modern times. The "Techniques" section proceeds from the simplest to more complex stitched patterns and shows the power of simple motifs in repeat. Even complex techniques are made clear with step-by-step photos and illustrations. Only a few indigo photos are perhaps too dark to be easily discernible. Some 100 pages are devoted to cloth preparation and process for specific techniques. Even the most experienced practitioner will learn something new about stitching on a single layer, on folded or pleated cloth, or combined methods such as capping and oversewing. Developing a motif by filling in larger shapes encourages creativity. Techniques not usually associated with stitch resist, such as clamp resist and binding or capping to a core, increase our understanding of the possibilities. Suggestions on dip dyeing for variety in some patterns and buffers for clean edges and to prevent knots from pulling through are invaluable. Degumming silk and even working on synthetic fabrics for interesting dimensional results without dyeing is explained. Japanese stitch names are used throughout. The sections on "Pattern" and "Dyes" will set the novice on the right path. Although many examples are dyed in traditional indigo, which is particularly well suited to resist dyeing, mordanted natural dyes, tannins and fiber reactive dyes enliven the book. There are excellent didactic chapters at the end of the book on these dyes. Indigo in particular is well explained. Callender acknowledges the dye experts she has learned from: Michelle Kwon of maiwa, french dye chemist Michel Garcia, and her compatriot author Jenny Balford Paul. The chapters devoted to discharge and dyeing whet the appetite for further exploration. The reader is encouraged to innovate and adapt traditional patterns according to her own artistic creativity. The author provides excellent sections on working with a grid and planning ahead for complex interactions between small pattern motifs. Other valuable tips are highlighted throughout. Callender's book should be read through with care and referred back to often when planning a new project. In this age of searchable documents on line, references to useful pages on particular techniques are appreciated. Finally, the gallery of Callender's own inspiring artwork shows what true mastery of craft can produce. This is an excellent companion to Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada's two earlier seminal books on shibori. Callender's book is a must have for all textile schools, shibori dyers and surface design artists. -- Barbara Shapiro * Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot *Autumn 2017 The author is very well known as both a tutor and textile artist, and this book certianly met my high expectations. Starting with an explanation of the process and an overview of worldwide shibori traditions, the text moves seamlessly through a full description of procedures, starting with methods of scouring fabrics for dyeing, knots and stiching variations. The very clearly illustrated and numerous step-by-step methods, generally referred to by their traditional terminology, are illustrated with photographs of the results. Design advice is provided throughout, so that you don't just master techniques, but learn to use them as effectively as possible. Chapters towards the end of the book are devoted to dyeing firstly, with indigo (including the natural organic vat), then -more unusually for shibori using natural dyes, iron and finally cold water fibre reactive dyes. Unusually this book is very suitable for both beginners and more advanced dyers. For the former, the text is logically organised and clear enough to be viewed as a complete self-teaching guide, but even for those with some experience there are likely to be some new ideas to try. If you have never tried shibori before, the stunning photographs will inevitably tempt you in. Highly recommended. * Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers *A comprehensive resource for shibori. The book is divided into three sections: Techniques, Pattern and Dyeing with how-to instructions and photographs. To my knowledge this is the most comprehensive book on shibori. Develop motifs for unique textiles. Indigo recipes and ones for other dyes too, ensure a range a colours. Suitable for the beginner with challenges for every level. Illustrated throughout with some of the most remarkable examples of shibori outside Japan. Learn about shibori tradition, preparation, process, pattern, folds and more. Mogume is my favourite technique. I found Jane's work years ago, and my jaw still drops at her amazing achievements. I just want to work through this book from beginning to end and over and over again. Absolutely essential for anyone interested in dyeing, stitching and shibori. Simply wonderful, demonstrating the true art of shibori. * Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Jane Callender has written the most marvellous book, 'Stitched Shibori', in encyclopaedic detail. Exploring the art of Shibori, in particular reference to stitched pieces and the pattern they create, this book exhaustively covers everything. It consists of three sections – Technique, Pattern and Dyeing. In Technique, there are 35 different approaches to stitching fabric. Many different stitches and patterns are explored, whether stitching on a single or double layer, how space between stitches can change a pattern, curve, pleat or binding. There are variations within each choice, producing multitudes of photographs of all the different effects achieved by changing the smallest detail. It is quite mind-boggling! If you want to work on stitched Shibori techniques, there can’t be many places where you can find all the answers. Pattern is a short section but teaches how to create the different patterns and stencils. You can see how combining techniques creates an infinite number of patterns – if you thought the first section was overwhelming, suddenly the world of Shibori opens up more widely. The Dyes section is extensively recipe-laden with many different Shibori dyes and how to create them. * Workshop on the web *May 2017 Shibori is a technique with its roots in Africa, China, and Japan. I’ve seen some pieces that are as intricate and delicate as a snowflake and as such I’ve rather filed this technique in the box marked ‘advanced’ i.e. not for me. Jane is a highly respected Shibori artist, teacher and speaker and so used to breaking down the technicalities of this centuries-old tradition into practical steps. The book is laid out intelligently, starting with the process of sewing in a single line of straight stitch with clear illustrations and photos showing the results that can be achieved. You can progress quite quickly by introducing more lines and layers or with folds and curves. Finished patterns can quickly become quite kaleidoscopic and for anyone interested in designing their own fabrics this could possibly get quite addictive. I was particularly drawn to the chapter on Wrapped Pattern, which combines stitching on the fold with binding the cloth around a cylinder for its more unpredictable results (but that’s me all over: living on the edge!). As with any technique involving dyes, you’ve got to have a certain amount of space to experiment and be comfortable handling chemicals. There are safety guidelines and recipes for all manner of dyes, both natural and synthetic, at the back of the book and some amazing colour combinations can be achieved with practice. Marigolds at the ready! * Popular Patchwork *Issue 40 Stitched Shibori is the Japanese art of immersing textiles in a dye bath and creating pattern using a range of stitched resist techniques (think tye-dyeing but on another level!). In this practical and beautiful guide , renowned expert Jane Callender showcases techniques, patterns and dyes in three comprehensive sections. Complete with full instructions, illustrations, photographs, designs, tips and advice, her guide features ideas for using grids, folding, pleating, motifs and stencils (plus other techniques) to create beautiful designs. It includes due recipes and useful advice on which fabrics to use. We believe it is a wonderful handbook for beginners and experienced textile artists alike. * Reloved *Shibori is a resist dye technique often associated with indigo. In its most basic form, stitches and/or pleats are applied to cloth before dyeing to create undyed, neutral marks or areas of pattern. Jane Callender, as Jenny Balfour-Paul explains in her foreward, is one of the few British shibori practitioners whose work can be considered a match to the foremost Japanese artists and in this book, the author brings to bear more than three decades of expert knowledge in this ancient craft. Callender wastes no time delving into every aspect of creating patterns using stitch resist. She begins with a brief introduction to shibori, before explaining the basics of preparation, tying knots, pulling threads and simple stitch arrangements. In pages 22-122 she explains all the key stitch-resist techniques needed – how various lengths, directions and rhythms of hand and machine stitch produce different marks. When combined with folds, pleats, binding, capping, wrapping, appliqué or multiple layers, the possibilities are endless. A second chapter reveals how to create intricate patterns. Finally she provides tuition and recipes for natural and synthetic indigo dyeing, as well as natural dyes and throughout, the instructions are explained clearly with helpful diagrams and photographs. Jane Callender has condensed a lifetime of practical expertise to create what can be best described as the shibori’s artist’s ‘best friend’, packed with both traditional and inventive stitch-resist techniques, designs and inspiration, including examples of her own work. Readers of this book will not be disappointed – both beginners and experienced makers will benefit from this guide, which at this price provides incredible value for a reference book you will return to again and again. * Embroidery Magazine *This is a lovely book, with a new technique I haven't tried before. I must admit I am more of a knitter and crocheter than stithcer, but the running stitch technique is easy to master, and the effects are amazing! What interested me most about the book was the section on natural dyeing (with yarn in mind!), and I found the step by step instructions really interesting and easy to follow. I have already ordered some indigo and alum, and intend to go foraging for some other natural products to continue this experiment! I honestly don't know how much shibori stitching I can see in my future, but I can see this book being pored over with regards to the fantastic dye section -- Natasha Field * Customer Review *At its simplest, shibori is the art of folding and pleating fabric, so distorting it before immersion in the dyebath. But it is so much more than that and eminent artist Jane Callender, who has devoted her working life to the art of shibori and indigo dyeing, presents, what will surely become, without doubt, a reference work for future generations of devotees of the craft. The book is divided into three sections – technique, pattern and dyeing, each meticulously explored with both lavish photography and highly detailed diagrams and explanations. A huge range of different stitch techniques are illustrated, used to create a myriad of specific designs and effects, together with the recipes for indigo and fibre-reactive dyes. This is an invaluable and inspiring resource book for both the beginner and the more experienced – highly recommended. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *A beautifully presented book, with lots of information on the history of Shibori.Lovely projects, though not for the complete beginner to embroidery. The techniques are very clearly explained and illustrated , with step by step instruction,Definately a book i will use and reuse multiple times -- Jane Johnson * Customer Review *At first glance I thought this was going to be a little too technical and difficult for a beginner but I was so wrong. There is a section on the fascinating history of the craft, lots of different stitches to try and also details on how to make your own dye recipes. You are guided through each step with diagrams and photos which makes it very easy to follow. Its a very comprehensive book on this subject and I would recommend it to an enthusiastic beginner right through to the more accomplished crafter. -- Karen Painter * Customer Review *March 17 Master the art of Japanese stitch-resist dyeing through both traditional and more innovative techniques of stitching and staining fabric. This book guides you through the process starting with detailed explainations of how to create patterns with stitches and offering helpful photos of each finished effect. It contains all the information you need to get started, while its inspiring content ensures that it will remain a fruitful resource as you become an experiened textile artist. * Sew *A very technical book, which is also very informative. I would recommend it to students genuinely interested in Shibori and dyeing techniques. There is lots of imagery to inspire and whet the appetite. Written in a somewhat prescriptive manner which helps students to learn the techniques precisely and leaving room for further exploration. As always, excellent photography by Paul Bricknell adds value. Jane Callender brings her many years experience with this technique to bear in a way that will enable much learning to take place, for students of little or no experience and also for those in the know! I love the recipe charts, these make it all much easier to digest. -- Valerie Hughes * Customer Review *This book is a very informative & inspiring guide to the Japanese art of Shibori. It is well illustrated both with photos & diagrams. The results are stunning but the book guides you through the processes so that you feel good results are achievable even for a beginner. Shibori does not need a lot of specialist equipment & I think anyone with an interest in textiles would find this a very useful addition to their bookshelf -- Nicola Urmenyi * Customer Review *Although on first look the book looks very complicated however after reading the book the instructions are very clear and precise with handy little tips -- Jennifer Brain * Customer Review *Very informative book with lots of photos to guide you through this embroidery craft, I'm looking forward to trying this out for the first time! -- Donna Hall * Customer Review *Very comprehensive book on many aspects of this craft. This is the latest way of wearing your art in miniature, and the invention of the book’s author. Visit her website www.dandelyne.com for everything you need (if you are in Australia) plus stockists for those in other countries. One look at the glorious array of colourfully stitched mini hoops on the cover and I was sold. Wearable art is my passion and I am always on the lookout for the latest thing. This book tells you what you need to know, starting with lists of what you need (basic needlecraft supplies) to suggestions for fabrics, threads and “fun bits”. The next section shows you how to assemble the hoops when completed, some basic embroidery stitches, how to transfer designs and other essentials. The page of tips and tricks are useful, and throughout the author has written her book in a friendly, chatty style which is accessible and a lot more fun than bald instructions. I particularly like the page showing one simple design (a heart) and nine different ways it could be worked. There are over sixty different patterns in here and they are divided into sections for ease of use. Start with that simple heart, then progress to more embellished designs for feathers, flowers and houses. Stitch a family portrait using simple shapes (easier than it sounds and very effective), use lace, sequins and beads, stitch your own drawing, work a design that flows out of the hoop and couch down thicker threads. Elsewhere are abstracts, traditional florals and even pet portraits. Some of this can be done using the author’s “spray and print” technique which utilises a printer, some spray adhesive and a picture file on the computer. This book is full of fun, modern embroidery ideas and is a lot of fun; even beginners can master it and the designs can be as easy or complex as you wish. A great new innovation. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Frame it, Wear it, Look Awesome.
