  • 5M Books Ltd Electromagnetism: Nature's Force That Shapes Our Lives

Book SynopsisThe author shows how, of the four forces of physical nature, it is the electromagnetic force that activates all of the nature around us as well as our bodies and brains. This force has been drawn upon throughout our entire evolution and plays an indispensable role in virtually all of modern technology. This book conveys the wonder of how this one force can do so much by describing how deeply embedded and intimately linked we are to earthly nature. Thus o¬ffering a refreshingly rich and encompassing perspective of our world by providing us with a deeper dimension in our reflections about our role as part of a cohesive whole. The electromagnetic workings of some of the core devices of modern technology, such as the transistor and laser are explained, along with the potential role that electromagnetism can play in our growing dependence on technology for our future evolution. Discussions on the various facets of electromagnetism are enriched by relating a number of engaging vignettes about its discoverers as well as anecdotes drawn from the author's own experience.

  • Springer Nature Switzerland Classical Field Theories

Book SynopsisThis exceptional textbook provides extensive discussions and worked exercises to accompany a field theory course at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. There are many questions that arise, both philosophical and practical, during a standard course in classical field theory that are addressed here in discussions between an advanced graduate student and her inquisitive undergrad friend. The discussion involves explicitly working out exercises and making pertinent remarks on the results and potential of the developed formalism. The book is ideal for readers who have taken or are taking the classical field theory course so that they already have a mathematical background in vector and tensor calculus and are willing to learn the basics of differential forms and exterior calculus to gain further insight into field theory formulation. The text can also be used to answer what you've always wanted to know but never dared to ask about field theory.

  • Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH Foundations of Classical and Quantum Electrodynamics

Book SynopsisThis advanced textbook covers many fundamental, traditional and new branches of electrodynamics, as well as the related fields of special relativity, quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics. The book introduces the material at different levels, oriented towards 3rd-4th year bachelor, master, and PhD students. This is so as to describe the whole complexity of physical phenomena, instead of a mosaic of disconnected data. The required mathematical background is collated in Chapter 1, while the necessary physical background is included in the main text of the corresponding chapters and also given in appendices. The content is based on teaching material tested on students over many years, and their training to apply general theory for solving scientific and engineering problems. To this aim, the book contains approximately 800 examples and problems, many of which are described in detail. Some of these problems are designed for students to work on their own with only the answers and descriptions of results, and may be solved selectively. The examples are key ingredients to the theoretical course; the user should study all of them while reading the corresponding chapters. Equally suitable as a reference for researchers specialized in science and engineering.Table of ContentsPreface XI Fundamental Constants and Frequently Used Numbers XV Basic Notation XVII 1 The Mathematical Methods of Electrodynamics 1 1.1 Vector and Tensor Algebra 1 1.2 Vector and Tensor Calculus 18 1.3 The Special Functions of Mathematical Physics 41 1.4 Answers and Solutions 71 2 Basic Concepts of Electrodynamics: The Maxwell Equations 91 2.1 Electrostatics 91 2.2 Magnetostatics 112 2.3 Maxwell's Equations. Book SynopsisMagnetism is one of the oldest and most fundamental problems of Solid State Physics although not being fully understood up to now. On the other hand it is one of the hottest topics of current research. Practically all branches of modern technological developments are based on ferromagnetism, especially what concerns information technology. The book, written in a tutorial style, starts from the fundamental features of atomic magnetism, discusses the essentially single-particle problems of dia- and paramagnetism, in order to provide the basis for the exclusively interesting collective magnetism (ferro, ferri, antiferro). Several types of exchange interactions, which take care under certain preconditions for a collective ordering of localized or itinerant permanent magnetic moments, are worked out. Under which conditions these exchange interactions are able to provoke a collective moment ordering for finite temperatures is investigated within a series of theoretical models, each of them considered for a very special class of magnetic materials. The book is written in a tutorial style appropriate for those who want to learn magnetism and eventually to do research work in this field. Numerous exercises with full solutions for testing own attempts will help to a deep understanding of the main aspects of collective ferromagnetism.Table of ContentsBasic Facts.- Atomic Magnetism.- Diamagnetism.- Paramagnetism.- Exchange Interaction.- Ising Model.- Heisenberg Model.- Hubbard Model.

    15 in stock

Book Synopsis"Quantum Theory of Magnetism" is the only book that deals with the phenomenon of magnetism from the point of view of "linear response". That is, how does a magnetic material respond when excited by a magnetic field? That field may be uniform, or spatially varying, static or time dependent. Previous editions have dealt primarily with the magnetic response. This edition incorporates the resistive response of magnetic materials as well. It also includes problems to test the reader's (or student's) comprehension. The rationale for a book on magnetism is as valid today as it was when the first two editions of Quantum Theory of Magnetism were published. Magnetic phenomena continue to be discovered with deep scientific implications and novel applications. Since the Second Edition, for example, Giant Magneto Resistance (GMR) was discovered and the new field of "spintronics" is currently expanding. Not only do these phenomena rely on the concepts presented in this book, but magnetic properties are often an important clue to our understanding of new materials (e.g., high-temperature superconductors). Their magnetic properties, studied by susceptibility measurements, nuclear magnetic resonance, neutron scattering, etc. have provided insight to the superconductivity state. This updated edition offers revised emphasis on some material as a result of recent developments and includes new material, such as an entire chapter on thin film magnetic multilayers. Researchers and students once again have access to an up-to-date classic reference on magnetism, the key characteristic of many modern materials.Table of ContentsThe Magnetic Susceptibility.- The Magnetic Hamiltonian.- The Static Susceptibility of Noninteracting Systems.- The Static Susceptibility of Interacting Systems: Local Moments.- The Static Susceptibility of Interacting Systems: Metals.- The Dynamic Susceptibility of Weakly Interacting Systems: Local Moments.- The Dynamic Susceptibility of Weakly Interacting Systems: Metals.- The Dynamic Susceptibility of Strongly Interacting Systems.- Thin Film Systems.- Neutron Scattering.

  • Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Dispersion Forces II: Many-Body Effects, Excited Atoms, Finite Temperature and Quantum Friction

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, a modern unified theory of dispersion forces on atoms and bodies is presented which covers a broad range of different aspects and scenarios. Macroscopic quantum electrodynamics is applied within the context of dispersion forces. In contrast to the normal-mode quantum electrodynamics traditionally used to study dispersion forces, the new approach allows to consider realistic material properties including absorption and is flexible enough to be applied to a broad range of geometries. Thus general properties of dispersion forces like their non-additivity and the relation between microscopic and macroscopic dispersion forces are discussed. It is demonstrated how the general results can be used to obtain dispersion forces on atoms in the presence of bodies of various shapes and materials. In particular, nontrivial magnetic properties of the bodies, bodies of irregular shapes, the role of material absorption, and dynamical forces for excited atoms are discussed. This volume 2 deals especially with quantum electrodynamics, dispersion forces, Casimir forces, asymptotic power laws, quantum friction and universal scaling laws. The book gives both the specialist and those new to the field a thorough overview over recent results in the context of dispersion forces. It provides a toolbox for studying dispersion forces in various contexts.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Approximating Casimir–Polder potentials.- Common properties of dispersion forces.- Casimir–Polder forces on excited atoms: static theory.- Casimir–Polder forces on excited atoms: dynamical approach.- Casimir–Polder forces in cavity quantum electrodynamics.- Thermal Casimir–Polder forces.- Casimir–Polder forces on moving atoms.
