    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA close look at the presidential election of 1880 reveals that Andrew Garfield's victory could have been a continuation of Lincoln's vision. This was the choice made by the American people - and, as The Last Lincoln Republican makes poignantly clear, the great opportunity forever lost when Garfield was assassinated.Trade ReviewAt last a stylish, succinct, and up-to-date biography of James Garfield and a coherent argument about what Garfield's election might have meant for the Republican Party and the United States had he lived. As Arrington argues, Garfield was a bold and strategic defender of the principles that the Republican Party had been founded upon, particularly its vision of equality. Garfield's death shortly after his inauguration was a lost opportunity and a turning point in the history of Reconstruction. With a careful eye to detail and a deep knowledge of the political system, Arrington tells this tragic story clearly and well."" - Gregory P. Downs, author of The Second American Revolution: The Civil War-Era Struggle over Cuba and the Rebirth of the American Republic

Book SynopsisArgues that presidential fundraising is an underexamined tool of modern presidential leadership and should be viewed as an instrument of presidential power akin to signing statements, executive orders, public speeches, and veto threats.Trade Review"Drawing upon a painstakingly collected data set of presidential fundraisers spanning nearly a half century, Brendan Doherty provides a comprehensive portrait of presidential fundraising in the modern era. This lucidly written and cogently argued book is the definitive scholarly account of the ‘Fundraiser-in Chief.’ An invaluable resource for researchers, teachers, and journalists, it is also a must-read for all Americans concerned with the role of money in contemporary US politics."—Richard J. Ellis, author of "The president’s time is distinctly finite, but the demand for campaign cash is apparently infinite: Brendan Doherty’s important research digs into how presidents have managed that tension over the last forty-plus years. With new data—one might say rich data!—and keen insight, Doherty explores how presidents have both responded to institutional changes in the campaign finance regime and shaped them. This book provides by far the most comprehensive evaluation of the rise of presidents’ drive for donor dollars and whether the role of fundraiser-in-chief is not only time-consuming but potentially corrupting."—Andrew Rudalevige, Thomas Brackett Reed Professor and Chair of Government, Bowdoin College"Presidential fundraising is one more aspect of the job that has developed an outsized importance. Today, an important measure of leadership is raising dollars. Brendan J. Doherty does a masterful job of tracing this development and its implications for present-day politics. • Elections

University of British Columbia Press Elections

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume, by eminent political scientist John Courtney, assesses the history and development of five “building blocks” of Canada’s electoral regime: the franchise, electoral districts, voter registration, election machinery, and plurality voting.Trade ReviewOverall, this is a very accessible volume, with well-informed and well-organised discussion of Canada’s democratic strengths and weaknesses. -- Marian Sawer * Australian Canadian Studies, Vol. 22, No. 2, 2004 & Vol. 23, No. 1, 2005 *The volume is pitched at a level that is accessible and interesting to senior undergraduate students, without compromising analytical sophistication. Elections should be required reading for students of elections and Canadian political history. -- Livianna Tossutti, Brock University * Canadian Journal of Political Science, December 2005 *Both as individual books, as well as the state goals of the Canadian Democratic Audit series, the analyses achieve what they set out to do. It is heartening to see that the state of politics is taken seriously, that there are difficult questions asked, systemic weaknesses are pointed out, and that these authors have the capacity to recommend what it is that might work better to develop a more inclusive and participatory democratic system. These books succeed in that they are moving into a territory that has a broad scope in challenging issues and institutions that set the stage for the major political categories of analysis. -- Robert Imre, University of Notre Dame, Australia * Political Studies Review, vol. 4, no 2, May 2006 *John C. Courtney is the leading scholar on the history, principles, and current practice of elections in Canada. Thus, he is the best choice to analyse the Canadian electoral system for the Canadian Democratic Audit series ... overall, Courtney’s volume is an even-handed comprehensive overview of the Canadian electoral system ... A great deal has been written about plurality voting, but few are as careful in their analysis as Courtney. -- Henry J. • Citizens

University of British Columbia Press Citizens

Book SynopsisThe first comprehensive assessment of citizen engagement in Canada, this volume raises challenging questions, not just about the interests and capabilities of Canadians as democratic citizens, but also about the performance of our democratic institutions.Trade ReviewI strongly recommend this volume to those concerned with the state of Canadian democracy, as well as to instructors of senior undergraduate and graduate courses in political behaviour. The authors turn what could have been a mundane recitation of data into a thoughtful and important reflection on the social, policy and electoral consequencesof the democratic divide. -- Livianna Tossutti, Brock University * Canadian Journal of Political Science *The first comprehensive assessment of citizen engagement in Canada, this volume raises challenging questions about the interests and capabilities of Canadians as democratic citizens, as well as the performance of our democratic institutions. It is essential reading for politicians and policy-makers, students and scholars of Canadian politics, and all those who care about the quality of Canadian democracy. * International Review of Administrative Sciences 71(4), 2005 *This is an excellent exposition of the attention Canadians pay to their politics, the information they have about it, their levels or participation, and their civic mindedness. The volume also places the information in a comparative context, measuring the data against the background afforded by such observers as Ron Inglehart and Douglas Coupland, both of whose works deal with the impact of generations on attitudes and values. This volume is part of the “Canadian Democratic Audit” series examining how well Canadian democracy is practiced at the outset of the 21st century. The product of the combined efforts of four notable Canadian academic specialists, it is also a timely effort; coming when the levels of Canadian voting are diminishing while media commentary discusses apparent public cynicism and alienation from the political process. The range of topics is wide. It deals with such group dynamics as sex, social class, education, income, etc., as well as activities at the three levels of government – federal, provincial, and municipal. This worthy addition to the series could serve as an important segment of courses in Canadian and comparative politics. Highly Recommended. -- P. Rather than a win-at-all-costs approach, Price reminds organizers of the irreplaceable importance of human connections and the consistent practice of values underlying any given social movement. • The Myth of Voter Fraud

Cornell University Press The Myth of Voter Fraud

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThrough meticulous research, Minnite finds that voter fraud is in reality a politically constructed myth intended to further complicate the voting process and reduce voter turnout.Trade ReviewMinnite argues persuasively that instances of people fraudulently voting in the US are rare. She makes a compelling case that the vast majority of non-legitimate registrations are innocent errors, that only a small number of individuals illegitimately registered actually cast ballots, and that only an even smaller number of these illegitimate ballots are counted. Using game theory, she suggests that her findings should not be surprising as the high potential costs of illegal voting would not justify the problematic gains. She then demonstrates that, although voter fraud is insignificant, the myth of voter fraud is important as a means to justify cumbersome administrative practices designed to depress turnout.... She writes engagingly and with a sense of humor. An important book. * Choice *This insightful and contemporary book focuses on a seemingly straightforward question: Is election fraud a problem in the United States? The answer, revealed in the title, is that it is not, but this conclusion is only drawn after a well-researched evaluation of the recent accusations of voter fraud. Minnite meticulously presents high-profile and widely cited cases of voter fraud, some of which continue to be widely referenced by politicians and in the news media, and shows that few cases of voter fraud have been supported with evidence. Overall, Minnite makes the case that intentional voter fraud rarely occurs in the U.S. context. Minnite provides a thorough and serious treatment of election fraud in the United States. The book is a much-needed contribution to the literature on election fraud, and will be an important resource for anyone interested in voter fraud. It also raises several debates that may be worth exploring in future research, and that relate to the degree to which the book's central arguments can be applied outside of the current U.S. context. This book is an excellent and timely contribution to the study of election fraud, and should be read by political scientists, those interested in election administration, and policymakers at the state and federal levels. The biggest strength of Minnite's book is that it persuasively argues that simplifying the electoral process in the United States should be a high priority, and is one that will significantly improve the integrity of the electoral process. I agree, and I hope that future debates consider not only what is politically feasible or what will provide short-term political gain, but what is best for the quality of U.S. elections and voter confidence in the electoral process. * Election Law Journal *

Book SynopsisAnswering a riddle in Japanese politics: Why do Japanese women turn out to vote at rates higher than men?Trade ReviewEquipped with... powerful tools, this study sheds light on how political activism quietly developed through grassroots 'women-centric networks,' which have not necessarily been well examined in political science... the author’s effort was devoted to capturing a good snapshot of local activism among women that is changing Japanese politics, which I believe was successful. -- Takeshi Iida * Japanese Journal of Political Science *There is much that I admire about this book: Martin's decision to make humble, ordinary women the point of departure for trying to figure out where a democratic resurgence is coming from in Japan; her ability to use a variety of sources, ranging from election survey data, interviews with government officials, and close knowledge of work done on grass-roots political organizing and women’s groups to her focus group discussions; her interest in trying to figure out how group interactions change people from being passive subjects to agents ready to participate in politics.... She uses unconventional approaches and makes feminist arguments for how group interaction helps ordinary Japanese women become active and independent citizens, and in doing so she helps us understand where electoral change in Japan is coming from. -- Patricia Boling * Journal of Japanese Studies *By regendering our view of the average Japanese voter, Martin has taken an arresting and thought-provoking perspective. The analysis of focus group discussions and of local efforts to change politics is revealing of how local democracy works, and anyone wanting a close look into the minds and actions of civically engaged women in Japan should definitely read this book. -- Deborah J. Book SynopsisThis book examines the history and weaknesses of the electoral college and proposes reforms that could be made to our electoral process without a constitutional amendment.Trade Review"Robert Bennett lucidly unveils the many complexities of a familiar but largely unknown institution in American life. The Electoral College is at once a process, a mystery and a dispenser of ultimate political power. It will henceforth be impossible to write knowledgeably about it without consulting this book." -- Norman Dorsen, New York University School of Law; ACLU President * 1976-1991 *"Bennett's book on the electoral college is the best book on this subject in years, if not ever...Bennett is clearly more interested in scholarship than he is in persuading the reader to one point of view about the electoral college." -- Ballot Access News"This well-timed book will appeal to experts as well as to members of the general public who are looking for a nuanced picture of Electoral College reform." -- Harvard Law Review"Doing nothing about the Electoral College system is the real and significant problem identified in this thoughtful book. Pretending that the problems of a tie or a faithless elector or a minority candidate prevailing will not arise is rather foolhardy. Thus, the value of this book is that it should stimulate informed citizens and elected officials to act on solving the problems now." -- New York Law Journal"Bennett treats a timely, important, and complex topic with consummate skill, and his analysis of the electoral college's history and contemporary functioning is full of fresh insights. His writing is so lucid, even affable, that the book is sure to be engaging to both specialists and general readers. This is a remarkable accomplishment." -- Stephen Siegel * DePaul University *"The electoral college is a disaster waiting to happen. But the brief interest kindled by the 2000 election, in which the electors chose a president who lost in the popular vote, dissipated in the face of 9/11 and other matters of more immediate concern. It is well known that the size and political power of Latinos in the United States is increasing dramatically. Book SynopsisThe book explains why certain public groups, such as Jews, lawyers, and gun-owners, develop substantially more representation than others and why certain organizations, like the National Rifle Association, become the presumed spokespersons for these groups across media and all branches of government.Trade Review"Offering an insightful explanation of why some interests are better represented than others, Matt Grossmann's The Not-So-Special Interests is destined to become one of the most important books on interest groups in this decade. His impressive collection and analysis of original data supports a conceptual framework rooted in the tradition of Truman but thoroughly modernized to engage contemporary questions. Not only does the book make a powerful argument, it's a pleasure to read as well." -- McGee Young, Assistant Professor of Political Science * Marquette University *"In The Not-So-Special Interests, Matt Grossmann's focus is resolutely on the bigger picture of organized interests in Washington, D.C., and is rigorously empirical . . . This is an extremely useful book, one that will spur debate, discussion, and certainly subsequent research." -- David S. Meyer * American Journal of Sociology *"With new ideas, new perspectives, and new data, Matt Grossmann revisits an old idea. He offers a fresh view of how major societal interests promote their ideas, seek policy advantage, and fit within the overall mosaic of American political life. Drawing upon an impressive new dataset of 1,600 advocacy organizations, Grossmann lays out how pluralism can and does become institutionalized across many venues. The Not-So-Special Interests presents an important addition to how we understand the politics of faction in the United States." -- Burdett Loomis, Professor * University of Kansas *"Grossmann's contributions of behavioral pluralism and individual pluralism should become staples for those seeking to understand organized interest behavior and influence . . . Recommended." -- R. M. Alexander * CHOICE *"The Not-So-Special Interests is an elegant and well-grounded study." -- Edward Ashbee * Journal of American Studies *"Grossmann's work is a major contribution—breathtaking in its scope and innovative in its theories of American pluralism at the dawn of the twenty first century. The book should be read by everyone concerned about whose voices really count in Washington." -- Kristin A. Goss, Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Political Science, Sanford School of Public Policy * Duke University *"In The Not-So-Special Interests, Matthew Grossmann sheds new light on one of the central questions in democratic theory and politics—who is represented? Skillfully combining information about the political attitudes and behavior of a wide range of social groups with original data about the organizations that claim to speak for them in Washington, he explains why some advocacy organizations succeed while others fail. His analyses offer new and often surprising insights about the sources and consequences of cumulative inequalities produced by interest group mobilization, power, and access." -- Dara Z. Strolovitch * Associate Professor, University of Minnesota and author of Affirmative Advocacy: Race, Class, and Gender in Interest Group Politics *"This book is one of the more-impressive theoretically constructed and empirically executed studies of the aggregation and mobilization of interests available. It is conscientiously grounded in the available research, and the database, most of it self-generated, provides comprehensiveness in relation to the universe studied, public advocacy groups in Washington, DC. This allows for an intensity of analysis that results in an original, well-executed, and significant contribution to our understanding." -- William Crotty * Political Science Quarterly *"The Not-So-Special Interests provides a refreshingly clear-eyed assessment of the landscape of interest group politics in Washington. . .Cutting through the folklore about interest groups is no small task, but blazes and impressive trail. It dispassionately devises sensible theories. It mingles real-world insights with heaps of illuminating quantitative data, most of which the author created from scratch using techniques that combin methodological rigor and common sense. The end result is a book that has important implications for the study of interest groups and for other questions in the field." -- Nicholas Carnes * American Review of Politics *

University of Pennsylvania Press Referendums and Ethnic Conflict

Book SynopsisAlthough referendums have been used for centuries to settle ethnonational conflicts, there had yet been no systematic study or generalized theory concerning their effectiveness until Matt Qvortrup's Referendums and Ethnic Conflict. Qvortrup's study filled the gap with a comparative and empirical analysis of all the referendums held on ethnic and national issues from the French Revolution to the 2012 referendum on statehood for Puerto Rico. Drawing on political theory and descriptive case studies, the scholar created typologies of referendums that are held to endorse secession, redraw disputed borders, legitimize a policy of homogenization, or otherwise manage ethnic or national differences. He considered the circumstances that compel politicians to resort to direct democracy, such as regime change, and the conditions that might exacerbate a violent response. Qvortrup offers a clear-eyed assessment of the problems raised when conflict resolution is sought through referendum as well as t

Book SynopsisElections are, and always have been, the lifeblood of American democracy. Often raucous and sharply contentious, sometimes featuring grand debates about the nation''s future, and invariably full of dramatic moments, elections offer insight into the character and historical evolution of American politics. America at the Ballot Box uses the history of presidential elections to illuminate American political democracy and its development from the early Republic to the late twentieth century. Some of the contributions in America at the Ballot Box focus on elections that resulted in dramatic political change, including Jefferson''s defeat of Adams in 1800, the 1860 election of Lincoln, and Reagan''s 1980 landslide victory. Others concentrate on contests whose importance lies more in the way they illuminate the broad, underlying processes of political change, such as the corruption controversy of Cleveland''s acrimonious election in 1884 or the advent of television adverTrade Review"An exciting collection of new research from major scholars that makes it clear why the historical study of presidential elections should be of interest to all of us." * David Greenberg, Rutgers University *

  • Electoral Capitalism

University of Pennsylvania Press Electoral Capitalism

Book SynopsisVast fortunes grew out of the party system during the Gilded Age. In New York, party leaders experimented with novel ways to accumulate capital for political competition and personal business. Partisans established banks. They drove a speculative frenzy in finance, real estate, and railroads. And they built empires that stretched from mining to steamboats, and from liquor distilleries to newspapers. Control over political property—party organizations, public charters, taxpayer subsidies, and political offices—served to form governing coalitions, and to mobilize voting blocs. In Electoral Capitalism, Jeffrey D. Broxmeyer reappraises the controversy over wealth inequality, and why this period was so combustible. As ranks of the dispossessed swelled, an outpouring of claims transformed the old spoils system into relief for the politically connected poor. A vibrant but scorned culture of petty officeholding thus emerged. By the turn of the century, an upsurge of Trade ReviewJeffrey D. Broxmeyer has made an important original contribution to our understanding of Gilded Age America… [Electoral Capitalism’s] originality and forceful larger argument—that the history of democracy in America and the history of American capitalism cannot be fully understood without grasping the fusion of both within electoral politics—make it required reading for historians of politics. The Gilded Age will never look quite the same. * Journal of American History *Overall, Electoral Capitalism gives a painstakingly researched view of New York City’s early machine politics. That view includes an extensive analysis of the lesser understood Republican organization, its ties to the national-level party system, and how its interaction with Tammany shaped both parties’ strategies and agendas. The book also skillfully sets the stage for a nuanced understanding of the Progressive Era. * Perspectives on Politics *It is heartening to welcome new work that takes Gilded Age American politics seriously. Progressive-Era political scientists and historians wrote the first draft of the history of the period’s politics...Electoral Capitalism will provide historians and political scientists the erudition and inspiration to re-think the re-organization of party politics after the Civil War. -- Paula Baker * Journal of Interdisciplinary History *Broxmeyer’s book provides a useful analytical framework that scholars can apply to interpreting corruption in our own era. * New York History *Jeffrey D. Broxmeyer makes a timely and important contribution to our understanding of electoral systems. In his bold and illuminating study, he challenges historical and empirical accounts of the electoral system through a meticulously researched analysis of politics in Gilded Age New York. * Jeffrey Selinger, Bowdoin College *Table of ContentsIntroduction The Tammany Bank Run of 1871 Chapter 1. New York University Press Trust in Black America Race Discrimination and

Book SynopsisExplicates the influence of race on black Americans' trust perceptionsTrade ReviewShayla Nunnally has written a groundbreaking study of the development of trust among Black Americans. Trust in Black America is empirically sound and theoretically sophisticated. It is a foundational study that should be read by anyone interested in race and racial politics in the United States. -- Marion Orr,co-editor of Power in the CityThis book arrives at a propitious moment. Recent partisan polarization and its racial inflections raise important empirical and normative questions about political trust and its relationship to race. With this in mind, Shayla Nunnally's Trust in Black Americaattempts to develop an account of trust that combines structuralism and methodological individualism, and in the process, she hopes to redefine our understanding of the American racial order and revise our thinking about trust. -- Michael Javen Fortner * Political Science Quarterly *This is an innovative and highly intellectual book best suited for graduate students, scholars, and those generally interested in the connections among race, politics, and psychology. -- A.R.S. Lorenz * CHOICE *Trust in Black America fills a long-overdue gap in the race and politics literature. As a concept, political trust has been around a long time, but it's seldom applied to race. But as the title suggests, Nunnally also explores the broader contours of trust, including its social and contextual variants, with stunning results. Given its focus upon trust writ large, something I'd never seen in political science--until now, Trust in Black America is a must read for anyone who cares about American politics. -- Christopher S. Parker, author of Fighting for DemocracyGiven the dramatic racial and ethnic changes in American political life in the last generation, Nunnallys work substantially expands our understanding of the varied ways in which people learn and experience politics.Trust in Black America complicates Political Sciences definition of trust with an exploration of African Americans internalization and externalization of race. This is a perfectly reasonable conceptualization except that Nunnally is the first to have done so. Her subtle and detailed framework of racial reasoning, moves the discussion of race beyond Black and White, into the layered views African Americans hold toward Latinos and Asians in the increasingly complex American population. This volume is a work of lasting significance. -- Dianne Pinderhughes, author of Black Politics after the Civil Rights RevolutionTable of ContentsPreface and Acknowledgments Part I: Understanding Race and Trust 1 Introduction: Race, Risk, and Discrimination 2 Explaining Blacks' (Dis)trust: A Th eory of Discriminative Racial-Psychological ProcessingPart II: Racial Internalization 3 Being Black in America: Racial Socialization 4 Trust No One: Navigating Race and Racism 5 Trusting Bodies, Racing Trust Part III: Racial Externalization 6 Th e Societal Context 7 Th e Political Context 8 Conclusion: In Whom Do Black Americans Trust? If so, you’d better read this book, because Ohio may well hand the keys to the White House to a lucky candidate this November, just as it has done many times. Kyle Kondik, a brilliant young analyst and rising star in the study of US politics, has made your task easy. This book is well written, richly illustrated, and bursting with gems about the Buckeye State—the center of our universe every four years.”“[Kondik] crunches election numbers into entertaining narrative about the state’s defining role in presidential elections since 1896, the latest chapter now unfolding, Donald Trump in the part of wild card.” * Akron Beacon Journal *“Kyle Kondik’s superb research marshals presidential election results, Ohio demographics and the state’s political history to explain why the Buckeye State is America’s presidential bellwether. This book is a must-have for understanding Ohio’s record of backing White House winners every four years—and what that might mean in 2016.”

Book SynopsisElection analyst Kyle Kondik examines House elections since the 1964 Supreme Court “one person, one vote” rulings to explain the Republicans' consistent advantage from their 1994 takeover to the present.Trade Review“Kyle Kondik has the rare ability to combine real-world mastery of politics with the erudition of political science research. In The Long Red Thread, he unspools a spritely and much-needed history of the last six decades of House elections as the chamber morphed from a safe and sleepy Democratic bastion to today’s cauldron of hyper-nationalized politics.” -- Walter Shapiro, staff writer for the New Republic and Roll Call columnist“Kyle Kondik is one of the brightest young stars in the firmament of election analysis, and his new book, The Long Red Thread, proves that anew. Kondik shows how Democrats lost their twentieth-century advantage in the critical process of redistricting, leaving Republicans with yet another arrow in their quiver for control of American politics. Kyle’s style, rich with colorful history and relevant detail, is sure to draw you in as he reveals some well-kept secrets of political power.” -- Larry J. Sabato, Robert Kent Gooch Professor of Politics, University of Virginia, and founder/director of the UVA Center for Politics“In The Long Red Thread, Kyle Kondik provides an in-depth analysis of an important trend that has largely been ignored by scholars: the long-term shift in competition in US House elections that has given Republicans a narrow but significant advantage. This book is a must-read for scholars and students of contemporary American electoral politics.” -- Alan Abramowitz, Emory University, author of The Great Alignment: Race, Party Transformation and the Rise of Donald Trump“The Long Red Thread presents a detailed but concise account of the evolution of district-level voting patterns in congressional elections since 1964 that, among other things, deftly exposes the electoral roots of Congress’s current susceptibility to stalemate and dysfunction. Anyone hoping to understand how American government arrived at its current unhappy state will find it illuminating.” -- Gary C. Jacobson, University of California, San Diego, author of Money in Congressional Elections, The Politics of Congressional Elections, and The Electoral Origins of Divided Government“Recounting more than a half-century of electoral history, Kyle Kondik documents how partisanship and electoral advantage can be amplified through reapportionment and redistricting practices. A crucially important story of how the House electoral map that once favored Democrats now tilts toward the GOP, The Long Red Thread is a must read for anyone seeking to understand the structures that affect electoral outcomes and determine our political futures.” -- Douglas B.
