Zu jedem Hauptabschnitt gehört eine grüne Marke, die am Rand der Buchseiten in gleicher Höhe wieder kehrt. Dadurch lassen sich die Hauptabschnitte leicht auffinden. Die weitere Untergliederung ist jeweils auf der ersten Seite jedes Hauptabschnittes an gegeben. Will man sich umfassend über ein bestimmtes Sachgebiet informieren, so sind dazu oftmals mehrere Stichworte erforderlich. Auf entsprechende Seiten wird bei solchen Stichworten durch einen schräg stehenden Pfeil (/') hingewiesen.
