Book SynopsisOffering a solid, research-based approach along with sound practical advice, this book equips you with the skills you need to analyse your own contexts and develop your practice, whether through formal study or alone. Badger explores teaching English as a problem-solving activity addressing three fundamental questions: what aspect of language do students needs to learn, how do they learn it, and how can teachers support this learning. This new edition includes updated references, a chapter on pragmatics, coverage of concepts such as translanguaging, CLIL, EMI, English as a lingua franca and sections on digital learning. Topics covered include: Psychological and social learning processes TESOL teaching methods and approaches Lesson planning and classroom management English teacher professional development The book also includes chapter summaries, activities for students and key readings recommendations, and online resources such as vTrade ReviewIn 16 concise chapters of very readable prose, [the book] presents an even-handed account of the field ... University lecturers and students alike should find this book accessible and useful ... There was much to enjoy, including the odd surprise; for example, a chapter on spelling — an innovative flourish and fascinating to read. * IATEFL Voices (of the first edition) *An excellent introduction to and overview of TESOL teaching along with providing a revision of TESOL theories, methodologies and strategies ... It is extensively researched with around 500 references to enable readers to extend their knowledge and skills in TESOL ... Reader-friendly. * Journal of Applied Learning & Teaching (of the first edition) *The book gives a comprehensive overview of many key areas and concepts in TESOL – learning, teaching, and assessing. Students who join a graduate TESOL programme without prior knowledge or training in language studies, linguistics, or the study of English language will find the book especially useful. -- Soe Marlar Lwin, Associate Professor in the Applied Linguistics (TESOL) Programme, Singapore University of Social Sciences, SingaporeA very valuable and accessible resource for every student-teacher and every teacher-practitioner who is wanting to take their knowledge about language, language learning and teaching to a theoretically more advanced and practically more informed level. I recommend it to my own Master’s students. * Oksana Afitska, Lecturer in TESOL, Lancaster University, UK (of the first edition) *With experience teaching English in diverse places like Malaysia, Algeria and the UK, Badger is able to explain the theories he discusses using examples from the real world of English teaching. What I like most about this book, as an English Language teacher and one who trains other teachers, is the concise chapters and the way Badger breaks down the component parts of the language. Easy to read, up to date, and easy to teach from. * Jaala Shaw, Lecturer, University of Colorado Boulder, International English Center, USA (of the first edition) *A comprehensive introduction to the field of TESOL with an attempt to integrate the three domains of language, learning and teaching within a unifying framework for teacher professional development. The jargon-free writing makes the book particularly accessible to practitioners from different cultural backgrounds across the world. * Yongcan Liu, Senior Lecturer in Second Language Education, University of Cambridge, UK (of the first edition) *The text is like a kind of toolkit with live examples for students to work on. The companion website is invaluable too. * Ayo Amuda, Senior Lecturer, University of South Wales, UK (of the first edition) *I have used this book as a core module text on MA TESOL programmes and have found it to be informative and clearly written. Students with both minimal and extensive prior knowledge or training in language studies and teaching have found it a very useful resource to support their learning. The way each chapter is organised from looking at how someone learners a particular skill or language area to the implications for teaching is excellent. This has helped my students reflect on teaching and learning of language and skills in their own TESOL contexts. -- Laura Grassick, Programme Lead for the MA in TESOL Studies, University of Leeds, UKTable of ContentsList of Figures List of Tables 1. Guilford Publications Language and Literacy Development Second Edition

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis established text--now revised and updated--reveals how spoken language skills are acquired and how they affect childrenâs later reading and writing achievement. With a unique focus on the needs of educators, the book examines the foundations of language in the developing brain. It explores the relationship of language processes to core literacy skills and probes the impact of motivational and sociocultural factors on childrenâs learning. Implications of developmental knowledge for classroom instruction are highlighted, and effective practices reviewed. Revealing vignettes, clear explanations of research, and lists of âœmain ideasâ enhance the textâs accessibility for preservice teachers. New to This Edition *Chapter on emergent literacy and the predictors of reading success. *Incorporates the latest research, including findings from key longitudinal studies. *Increased attention to English learners, low-income children, and children with disabilities. *UTrade Review"This updated second edition provides an accessible yet thorough overview of how children develop critical language and literacy skills and why these skills are so important. Particularly important is the strong review of how early development fosters skilled reading comprehension later on. Byrnes and Wasik are recognized experts who translate current research in a meaningful way to help transform readers’ understanding of the remarkable task of language and literacy acquisition in children."--Laura M. Justice, PhD, EHE Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology, The Ohio State University “Once again, Byrnes and Wasik provide an incredibly readable summary of the latest research on language and literacy development--and, at the same time, they make strong links to the implications for classroom instruction. This is a unique volume that appropriately merges the literatures on oral language and literacy skills, while successfully bridging the divide between psychology and education. It is an essential book for graduate students who plan to be teachers, for current educators and administrators, and for psychology students with applied interests. I highly recommend this volume as a course text! It is ideal for graduate-level classes on language and literacy development. My graduate students appreciate the 'relevance' portions of the chapters, which help motivate their learning; and the main ideas that frame each chapter help me to organize class discussions. The increased focus throughout on English language learners is relevant and timely. What was already an indispensable classroom text is even better in this updated second edition."--Meredith L. Rowe, EdD, Saul Zaentz Professor of Early Learning and Development, Harvard Graduate School of Education "The developmental perspective presented by Byrnes and Wasik is unique and important. The notion of 'education as a developmental mechanism' frames literacy learning as a pathway along which we need to recognize milestones and guide students accordingly. This book's message is that all students can achieve if we determine where they are and where they need to go--and offer experiences that are effective to help them get there."--Margaret G. Rowman & Littlefield Transform Teaching and Learning through Talk

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisReading and writing float on a sea of talk declared James Britton and yet in our current education system, where the pressure is on for students to pass written exams, it is all too easily left adrift. How then, as teachers and educators, can we turn the tide and harness the power of talk in our classrooms? This is not just an educational choice but rather, given students' vastly different experiences of language, a moral imperative.Amy Gaunt and Alice Stott's must-read book serves as a detailed and engaging guide to get talking in class. It blends the academic research and evidence, with first-hand classroom experiences and practical strategies to enable you to unlock the power of oracy in your classroom and equip your students with the speaking skills they need to thrive in the twenty first century. Transform Teaching and Learning Through Talk describes how to: Identify and teach good talk (and listening!)Build a classroom culture which values talkCreate meaningful and authentic contTrade ReviewEssential reading for classroom practitioners, school leaders and, I’d argue, for policy makers who might be persuaded of the core value of oracy – not a distraction, but instead the engine house of academic achievement and for developing rounded, confident individuals. Those early pioneers in the 1970s and 1980s cleared a lot of the scrubland surrounding attitudes to talk in education. They planted the seeds that, now, possibly, are beginning to burst into flower again. This book doesn’t just revisit what was made visible in those times, but stimulates and reveals new growth as well, fresh approaches that might just survive for longer this time around. * Oracy Cambridge *This is a wonderful book that provides that rare thing - absolute clarity of vision and purpose alongside practical down-to-earth examples for the classroom. Dip into this this today and by tomorrow have a range of tried and tested activities that will inspire your class to engage meaningfully in discussion, build listening skills and engage in debate. The authors are experienced highly successful teachers who generously share their strategies, resources and insights. I recommend this to you wholeheartedly. -- Professor Dame Alison Peacock, Chief Executive of the Chartered College of TeachingIn their book on oracy, Gaunt and Stott have drawn upon their experiences at School 21 to produce a timely book for teachers who want to improve the quality of talk in their classrooms. The book is bursting with ideas and practical strategies for teachers, alongside a detailed exploration of the nuances of successful talk, listening, debate, and much more. -- Alex Quigley, Senior Associate at the Education Endowment Foundation, former English teacher, author of ‘Closing the Vocabulary Gap'More than speaking, more even than a way to teach critical thinking, oracy offers hope for a generation of citizens who can understand each other and make decisions in common. Educators, parents—and anyone interested in saving the world, for that matter—should consider this book an indispensable guide. -- Jay Heinrichs, author of the New York Times bestseller, ‘Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion’Here's a book overflowing with ideas of how to make oracy come alive in the classroom. It will be welcomed by all heads of department who want to enable their children to lead fulfilled and successful lives - and do well in their exams! Although it doesn't set out explicitly to do so, it is also a 'vade mecum' for teachers wishing to make tutor periods fun and valuable. The many cogent examples of 'how-to-do-it' are drawn from classroom practice and will be gobbled up by teachers looking for practical ideas. The two authors who hail from the pioneering 'School 21' also justify the importance of oracy which strangely (given their reliance on oracy) appeals only fitfully to politicians making national policy. Yet listening and speaking are a precondition of a free and democratic society and a vital part of everybody's claim to be educated. After all until a person with a case which is just can argue it in a way which might enable it to prevail, there will continue to exist a mental form of slavery which is as real as any economic form. Teachers are pledged to destroy such slavery. This book will help them immeasurably in their vital task and should be on the shelf of every school's staff library. -- Professor Tim Brighouse, former Chief Commissioner for SchoolsHigh quality talk in classrooms is easier to describe than to put into action. This book sets out in meticulous detail the what, the why and the how of securing great quality talk in classrooms. It leaves no stone unturned, draws extensively on the research and offers examples of how high quality oracy and its cousin, listening, work in classrooms. This is a rich, carefully structured resource, and will be a boon to individual teachers and whole school communities who know the importance of strengthening this aspect of their practice. -- Mary Myatt, education advisorThis clearly written and highly informative book is just what is needed to help teachers put the teaching of spoken language skills into the curriculum - and to convince them why they should do so. It makes the evidence-based case for oracy education very well, and is full of practical, tried-and-tested classroom activities. -- Professor Neil Mercer, Director of Oracy Cambridge, University of Cambridge‘Oracy’ might be an ugly word, but this book beautifully makes the case for why it matters so much. We know from personal experience and academic research that high quality, well-taught speaking and listening approaches can form the foundation of children’s wider achievement. Here is a compellingly comprehensive range of approaches and activities to give oracy the profile it needs to make a deep whole-school impact. For anyone interested in empowering children’s learning, this book is indispensable. -- Geoff Barton, General Secretary, the Association of School & College LeadersTransforming Teaching and Learning Through Talk: the Oracy Imperative is essential reading for classroom practitioners, school leaders and, I’d argue, for policy makers who might be persuaded of the core value of oracy – not a distraction, but instead the engine house of academic achievement and for developing rounded, confident individuals. Those early pioneers in the 1970s and 1980s cleared a lot of the scrubland surrounding attitudes to talk in education. Book SynopsisFisher & Frey's answer to close and critical reading No doubt since the cave paintings of prehistoric times, humans have asked questions to make sense of the message. So what could possibly be new about posing questions about text? Plenty . . . and withTDQ, Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey reveal it all. After one quick read, you will have learned all the very best ways to use text-dependent questions as scaffolds during close reading . . . and the big understandings they can yield, especially when executed the Fisher and Frey way. But that's just for starters. Fisher and Frey also include illustrative video, actual texts and questions, examples from across content areas, and an online professional learning guide, making the two volumes of TDQ a potent professional development tool across all of K-12. The genius ofTDQis the way Fisher and Frey break down the process into four cognitive pathways that help teTrade Review"Fisher and Frey set the record straight about text-dependent questions. They demonstrate that text-dependent questions can address not only literal understanding but also understandings about what the text doesn’t say, how the text works, what the text means to and for the reader, how the text might be read in a specific discipline, and more. With specific prompts and concrete examples, Fisher and Frey show us how to use questioning as a central tool to address the Common Core State Standards." -- NELL K. DUKE"Fisher and Frey have a knack for making complex topics accessible. They write in a jargon-free style that teachers appreciate, and their use of examples and analogies helps bring ideas to life. These are qualities their readers have come to expect, and this book does not disappoint. . . . Teachers will find here an abundance of fresh, practical ideas that are easy to implement. This book deserves a ‘close read,’ and I heartily recommend it." -- MICHAEL MCKENNA"Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey are experts at linking research to educational practice. Their latest book, Text-Dependent Questions, provides teachers with the information they need to scaffold their students’ deep comprehension through four levels of questioning. I am excited to share this book with teachers and colleagues!" -- LINDA DORN"Text-Dependent Questions solidifies Fisher and Frey’s well-earned reputation as literacy experts who offer sane and nuanced interpretations of the Common Core State Standards. They remind us that close reading at its best is a social process, one involving teacher-learner interaction as well as student-to-student talk. While the recommended texts and sample questions are useful, the extended classroom examples are the true heart of the book, demonstrating how skilled practitioners flexibly devise and deploy high-quality questions to serve varied instructional purposes. " -- KELLY CHANDLER-OLCOTT"Fisher and Frey deliver another indispensable resource for teachers of adolescents across the curriculum as they strive to meet today’s more rigorous standards. Mentoring students to grow from dependence on questions provided by others to developing the capacity to "interrogate a text" themselves is fundamental to proficient reading of complex disciplinary texts. Text-Dependent Questions provides teachers with a carefully reasoned pathway for questioning a text as a requisite for close reading." -- DOUGH BUEHL, Author of Classroom Strategies for Interactive Learning"Everything about this book is genuine. From the authors’ candid appraisal of the myths surrounding close reading to their forthright recommendations for teaching it is refreshing. Fisher and Frey have been there, lived the pedagogy, and generated much of the scholarship that makes Text-Dependent Questions both compelling and unpretentious. Readers who have heard this dynamic pair speak at conferences and other professional gatherings are in for a treat; they are indisputably on the frontline when it comes to engaging others in close reading." -- DONNA ALVERMANNTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Chapter 1. Book SynopsisA new approach to training and evaluating world languages online instructors The rapid growth in online world language programs in the United States coupled with the widespread implementation of virtual teaching in response to COVID-19 have pushed the field to reconceive instruction. Virtual learning creates unique challenges for instructors, who need to ensure that their students have adequate interaction with their peers, their professor, and native speakers of the language. Even with a growing demand for online language courses, there are few tools that evaluate the training and assessment of online language instructors. In Online World Language Instruction Training and Assessment, authors Carmen King Ramírez, Barbara A. Lafford, and James E. Wermers fill that gap, providing a critical pedagogical approach to computer-assisted language learning (CALL) teacher education (CTE). By combining best CTE training and evaluation practices with assessment tools, the authors explain how teachers can integrate technology to build successful online programs. Their ecological, holistic approach addresses all facets of learning online—including pressing challenges of moving courses online, teacher training, developing core competencies and skills, instructions for assessment and self-evaluation, goal setting, and the normalization of critical CTE practices in an increasingly digital environment. The authors propose new solutions to teacher training challenges, providing extensive rubrics and tools that can equitably assess online language instructor skills, the training they receive, the assessment process they undergo, and the instruments used for instructor assessment. A list of CALL and CTE resources (available on the Press’s website) further supports readers’ successful adaptation to an everchanging learning environment.Table of ContentsIntroduction 1.
