Book SynopsisOne day in the distant future, Thor, the Norse god of thunder, is destined to battle the giant snake that threatens to devour the world. Until then, mortals of Middle Earth look to Thor and his magic hammer for protection from evil. In this third volume of the Secrets of the Ancient Gods series, Thor takes time from his duties to lead readers through the mythological Norse realms, those mysterious worlds that are home to gods, giants, elves, and monsters. He also delves into the age of the Vikings and reveals how they lived and what they believed. Using Thor as her humorous narrator, author Vicky Alvear Shecter provides a well-researched and unconventional nonfiction introduction to Norse mythology. Includes a glossary, bibliography, and index.Trade Review"Mortals, do you dare follow the god of "strength and weather and mighty muscles" on a tour through Norse mythology?...Larson's dark, operatic tableaux of melodramatically posed figures clad in outsized headgear and geometrically patterned cloaks add a comically Wagnerian tone... Return trips are definitely in the offing." --Kirkus Reviews "In this third entry in the Secrets of the Ancient Gods series... Shecter assumes the rough-and-tumble voice of "everyone's 'good-buddy' god," Thor, introducing more than a dozen myths and the gods central to them... Larson's delicately etched pen-and-ink illustrations have a creepy, Goreyesque edge... Extensive character descriptions, source notes, and a glossary round out this entertainingly informal introduction to Norse legends." --Publishers Weekly

  • The Feminist Revolution: A Story of the Three

Skyhorse Publishing The Feminist Revolution: A Story of the Three

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisToday, feminism is as important as ever. Betty Friedan’s musings, “to take the actions needed to bring women into the mainstream of American society, now; full equality for women, in fully equal partnership with men,” still hold fervently true in current society. Young readers still fighting for equality today need to know how the movement began years ago, with such basics as the right to vote, the right to birth control, and the right to equal employment. Leading historian Jules Archer’s account offers fascinating biographies of Susan B. Anthony, Margaret Sanger, and Betty Friedan, with a full background of the political organizations they worked for and against.Forty-four percent of general American history books do not even mention the struggle for women’s suffrage, and 65 percent fail to record the name of Susan B. Anthony. Even more young readers have never heard the names of Margaret Sanger and Betty Friedan. As far as most of these books are concerned, women are invisible in American history. But these women dared to defy convention, at great personal risk, for the cause of sexual and gender equality. Their stories must be remembered. With a new foreword by feminist author Naomi Wolf, The Feminist Revolution relies heavily on letters, diaries, and other personal forms of communication to tell the story of women’s rights in this country. Part of Sky Pony Press’s revitalization of the Jules Archer History for Young Readers, series, this book is a must-read introduction to the Feminist Revolution for all young adults.Trade Review“Archer gives the history an exciting flourish.” —Kirkus Reviews“The historical impact of these women’s lives is deftly presented through captivating narrative.” —Publishers Weekly“In a clear and lively style consistent with the lives being described, Archer gives brief biographies of Susan B. Book SynopsisWith expert storytelling skills, historian Jules Archer recounts the complete story of Watergate, from that first fateful predawn Saturday morning—June 18, 1972—when night watchman Frank Willis discovered “burglars” inside the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee to President Richard Nixon’s disgraced resignation two years later. This story dives into the cover-ups, the payoffs, the blackmailing, the scapegoats, and Nixon’s impending impeachment, conviction, and removal from office. As suspenseful as any detective story, Archer unveils the scandal of a president trying to steal an election that was already his.More than eighty-five historic black-and-white photographs record the events, and Archer’s thoughtful questions and conclusions leave readers with much-needed cause for hope. Part of Sky Pony Press’s revitalized Jules Archer History for Young Readers series, with a new foreword by Roger Stone, Watergate strives to give young readers the whole truth about this moment in history, which will enable young people to form intelligent judgments essential to being a part of a functioning democracy.Trade Review“Will be useful to those who never could make their way through the Presidential Transcripts.” —Kirkus Reviews“The first attempt at a comprehensive account of Watergate for young citizens....A tough-minded, skillful distillation of the Watergate events.” —The New York Times Book Review“The present tense gives a sense of immediacy and urgency to the narrative, and the account is liberally laced with pertinent and cogent quotations....valuable.” —School Library Journal“Will be useful to those who never could make their way through the Presidential Transcripts.” —Kirkus Reviews“The first attempt at a comprehensive account of Watergate for young citizens....A tough-minded, skillful distillation of the Watergate events.” —The New York Times Book Review“The present tense gives a sense of immediacy and urgency to the narrative, and the account is liberally laced with pertinent and cogent quotations....valuable.” —School Library Journal

Skyhorse Publishing Treason in America: Disloyalty Versus Dissent

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisTreason can be defined as “the breach of the allegiance which a person owes to the state under whose protection he lives.” But what exactly does it mean to be guilty of a “breach of the allegiance” owed to your country? In a country that guarantees freedom of speech and dissent tp all citizens, the extent to which dissent becomes unlawful may not always be clear. Treason is punishable by the death penalty, underscoring the importance of the question: How do we go about proving that someone is indeed an enemy of his country—a traitor? In this book, renowned historian Jules Archer explores different cases of treason throughout our history, while encouraging young readers to really question the definition of treason and how it should be treated. He asks readers to consider the similarities between disloyalty and dissent and ultimately urges this generation to take it into their own hands to redefine American duties and liberties for our time.

  • A Teacher's Guide to Land of Hope: An Invitation

Encounter Books,USA A Teacher's Guide to Land of Hope: An Invitation

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis Teachers’ Guide to Wilfred McClay’s Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story will be an invaluable aid to classroom teachers who use Land of Hope as a textbook for courses in United States history. McClay has coauthored the Guide with John McBride, a master teacher with over thirty years of secondary and collegiate teaching experience. The result is an exceptionally rich and useful resource for the enhancement of the classroom experience. Each chapter of Land of Hope has a five-part treatment: a short summation of the chapter’s contents, a lengthy set of questions and answers about the text of the chapter, materials that can be deployed in testing or used to sharpen classroom discussion; a set of short objective tests, suitable for quizzes and exams; a primary-source document for class study and analysis; and questions and answers to accompany the document. In addition, there are special units to assist teachers in the giving special coverage to the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Origins of the Two-Party System. Like Land of Hope itself, these materials are designed to help students come away from the study of the American past with a coherent sense of the larger story, and a sense of history as a profoundly reflective activity, one that goes to the depth of our humanity.Trade ReviewPraise for Land of Hope:“At a time of severe partisanship that has infected many accounts of our nation’s past, this brilliant new history, Land of Hope, written in lucid and often lyrical prose, is much needed. It is accurate, honest, and free of the unhistorical condescension so often paid to the people of America’s past. This generous but not uncritical story of our nation’s history ought to be read by every American. It explains and justifies the right kind of patriotism.”— Gordon S. Wood, author of Friends Divided: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson“Those who are acquainted with Wilfred McClay’s writing will not be surprised that Land of Hope, his latest book, is a lucid and engaging account of the ‘great American story.’ McClay is a charming storyteller—and a first-rate scholar and appreciator of America’s political and cultural development.”— Michael Barone, resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, senior political analyst at the Washington Examiner, and coauthor of The Almanac of American Politics“We’ve long needed a readable text that truly tells the American story, neither hiding the serious injustices in our history nor soft-pedaling our nation’s extraordinary achievements. Such a text cannot be a mere compilation of facts, and it certainly could not be written by someone lacking a deep understanding and appreciation of America’s constitutional ideals and institutions. Bringing his impressive skills as a political theorist, historian, and writer to bear, Wilfred McClay has supplied the need.”— Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University“In a time when America seems pulled in opposite directions, Wilfred McClay has written a necessary book—the most balanced, nuanced history of the United States I have read in the past fifty years.”— Daniel Henninger, deputy editor, editorial page, The Wall Street Journal“Too many recent historians have tried to rewrite America’s history as a tale of squalor and exploitation. Wilfred McClay tells it like it is: as a story of hope.”— Glenn Harlan Reynolds, Beauchamp Brogan Distinguished Professor of Law, University of Tennessee“No one has told the story of America with greater balance or better prose than Wilfred McClay. Land of Hope is a history book that you will not be able to put down. From the moment that ‘natives’ first crossed here over the Bering Strait, to the founding of America’s great experiment in republican government, to the horror and triumph of the Civil War, and to the stirring election of Barack Obama, McClay’s account will capture your attention while offering an unforgettable education.”— James W. Ceaser, Professor of Politics, University of Virginia“I wish Land of Hope had been there when I was teaching U.S. history. It is history as literature—broad, detailed, compassionate—and it can help anyone who wants to know where we came from and how we got here. Professor McClay has made a welcome gift to the history of our country.”— Will Fitzhugh, Founder, The Concord Review

Book SynopsisWhen we published Land of Hope in May of 2019, we had an immediate response from teachers and students that (1) they loved the book, and (2) they would need ancillary materials to aid them in the use of the book for classroom instruction. We jumped right on that, and produced a Teacher's Guide, which appeared in spring of 2020, and we're now following up with a Student Workbook, which is completely coordinated with the Teacher's Guide, featuring study questions (which can also be used for testing by teachers), objective exercises (matching, identification, temporal ordering), primary-source documents and accompanying study questions, a section of map exercises which include in-text outline maps for student use, as well as back-of-the-book resources such as reference tables for the British monarchy, the American presidency, and a list of suggestive questions that are suitable for extended essays or term papers. It is the perfect resource for both classroom teaching, home education, and hybrid versions of both.Trade ReviewPraise for Land of Hope:“At a time of severe partisanship that has infected many accounts of our nation’s past, this brilliant new history, Land of Hope, written in lucid and often lyrical prose, is much needed. Professor McClay has made a welcome gift to the history of our country.” — Will Fitzhugh, Founder, The Concord Review “This is the most cheerful and inspiring history of America written so far this century. Where most historians emphasize fragmentation and oppression, McClay makes the case for a unified national story characterized by optimism and achievement. Without downplaying dismaying episodes, past and present, he shows how they have been offset by the American pursuit of reform, revival, and improvement. Old heroes like George Washington are restored to their rightful place. America is far from perfect, McClay admits, but it is genuinely dedicated to the ideals of equality and democracy, and there is much to be proud of. I can imagine schools and colleges assigning this book with a sense of gratitude and confidence.” — Patrick Allitt, Cahoon Family Professor of American History, Emory University “In Land of Hope, Bill McClay succeeds at multitasking. He has written not only a learned and readable history of the United States, from Columbus to Trump, with balance and integrity but has provided an insightful primer on the meaning of citizenship itself. McClay reminds us that although history holds no easy lessons, its honest practice proves indispensable in preventing the future from proceeding in darkness. Those entrusted with teaching young minds about the discipline of history as well as history will find in this volume much to fortify them.” — Robert Paquette, Professor of History and President, The Alexander Hamilton Institute “This book is the antidote to abysmal levels of historical knowledge our high school graduates possess. History bores them; the textbooks are dreary; lessons play up guilt and identity politics. It turns them off. They want powerful tales and momentous events, genuine heroes and villains, too—an accurate but stirring rendition of the past. This is Bill McClay’s Land of Hope, a superb historian’s version of the American story, in lively prose spiced with keen analysis and compelling drama. Every school that assigns this book will see students’ eyes brighten when the Civil War comes up, the Progressive Era, the Depression, civil rights . . . The kids want an authentic, meaningful heritage, a usable past. McClay makes it real.” — Mark Bauerlein, author of The Dumbest Generation “Land of Hope is in every way a remarkable piece of work, clearly written and as balanced and fair-minded as any American history you will ever read. Land of Hope operates on the assumption that the past remains a necessary part of us, something we must both understand and learn from. It refuses the all-too-common view that we today are simply superior to our own history, a history that amounts to little more than a grab bag of chicanery, venality, and self-interest. Instead, it is an attempt to lay out the political history of our nation, the dilemmas we faced, the choices we made, and the ideas that shaped and reshaped our American creed.” — John Agresto, Professor of Political Science, former President of St. John’s College, and author of Rediscovering America “Wilfred McClay has written more than a textbook. His affirmative, even-handed review of American history, institutions, and character is refreshing, and comes none too soon, when so many accounts are merely trying to settle scores. Beautifully written and fair minded, Land of Hope ranks among finest surveys of the nation’s past.” — Gilbert T. Sewall

  • Sparta's Sicilian Proxy War: The Grand Strategy

Encounter Books,USA Sparta's Sicilian Proxy War: The Grand Strategy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe great expedition to Sicily described in the sixth and seventh books of Thucydides’ history can be depicted in a variety of ways. By some, it has been thoughtfully treated as an example of overreaching on the part of the Athenians. By others, it has been singled out as a sterling example of patriotism, courage, and grit on the part of the Syracusans. Never until now, however, has anyone examined this conflict from a Spartan perspective – despite the fact that Lacedaemon was the war’s principal beneficiary and that her intervention with the dispatch of a single Spartiate turned the tide and decided the outcome. In Sparta’s Sicilian Proxy War, Paul Rahe first outlines the struggle’s origins and traces its progress early on, then examines the reasons for Sparta’s intervention, analyzes the consequences, and retells the story of Athens’ ignominious defeat. Rarely in human history has a political community gained so much at so little cost through the efforts of a single man.Trade ReviewPaul Rahe successfully evokes the expeditionary war against Syracuse, while uncovering the Spartan grand strategy that led to Athenian failures.—Edward N. Luttwak, Author of The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire and The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire In his latest installment of Spartan history, Paul Rahe demonstrates how adroit Spartan grand strategy brought about the Athenian catastrophe on Sicily. Rahe combines mastery of classical sources, secondary work in a multiplicity of languages, wide reading in modern strategic doctrines, and a rare combination of scholarly acumen and common sense, to offer another masterful volume in one of the great projects of modern classical scholarship. —Victor Davis Hanson, Author of A War Like No Other Paul Rahe has written a superb account of Sparta’s attempt to prevent Athens from conquering Syracuse in 415-413. Drawing skillfully from Thucydides’ brilliant campaign narrative, Rahe has lucidly and cogently described what he has dubbed Sparta’s Proxy War. Once again, he expertly presents this campaign from the point of view of the Spartans. It is a great achievement, and a welcome one. —Robert B. Strassler, Editor of the Landmark Series of Ancient HistoriansThe fifth installment in Paul Rahe’s erudite study of classical Lacedaemon recounts how Sparta used proxy war and her enemy’s own hubris to inflict a mortal injury on mighty Athens. Long acclaimed for their prowess in battle, Rahe shows that the Spartans were also cunning strategists and problem-solvers fit to rank with history’s finest. An indispensable addition to the ‘school of statesmanship’ with applications for the present day. —A. Wess Mitchell, former Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, and author of The Grand Strategy of the Habsburg Empire Paul Rahe offers a compelling account of Sparta’s strategy to frustrate Athens’s conquest of Sicily during the Peloponnesian War. The annihilation of the Athenian invading forces, Rahe shows, turned on Sparta’s leadership and support for its proxies. This examination of a past proxy war resonates with our own troubled times, as today’s great powers struggle for international mastery while avoiding direct clashes of arms.—John Maurer, Alfred Thayer Mahan Distinguished Professor of Sea Power and Grand Strategy, US Naval War College The winners are said to write history. Yet the Sicilian Expedition is typically described from the defeated Athenians’ viewpoint. Paul Rahe portrays its disastrous war of choice as a massively successful Spartan proxy war, when Sparta’s small investment in Sicilian proxies yielded a huge payoff against its primary adversary, Athens. The lesson: sustaining someone else’s fight has a much higher potential return on investment than joining the fight directly. Bad news for Putin. —S.C.M. Paine, William S Sims University Professor of History and Grand Strategy, US Naval War College Is there more to be learned and are there new lessons to be drawn from Sparta’s war against Athens nearly 2,500 years ago? Yes, and they are set forth with crisp clarity and in sparkling prose by Paul Rahe in Sparta’s Sicilian Proxy War, his latest analysis of classical Sparta’s successful grand strategy against Athens. His analysis has much to teach both classics specialists and newcomers to the field about ancient Greece—and our world today.—Michael Barone, author of Shaping Our Nation Paul Rahe has outdone himself again. A learned study of Sparta’s proxy war against Athens in Sicily—replete with historical analysis and wise observations on grand strategy. It should be on the bookshelves of every strategist and statesman.—Jakub Grygiel, Professor of Politics, The Catholic University of America, and former Senior Advisor in the Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of StateTable of ContentsCONTENTSList of Maps xiIntroduction xiiiPrologue: Sparta’s Enduring Strategic Dilemma 3Part One: A Single Spartiate 49Chapter One: Greece’s Wild West 55Chapter Two: A Venture Ill-Advised 78Chapter Three: Philosophy, Sophistry, Impiety,Sacrilege, and Faction 110Part Two: War by Proxy 143Chapter Four: Syracusa Besieged 165Chapter Five: Dancing in the Dark 189Chapter Six: The Flashing Sword of Retribution 217Epilogue: Sparta’s Third Attic War 241Appendix: The Case for Grand Strategy 250List of Abbreviations and Short Titles 263Notes 267Author’s Note and Acknowledgements 351Index 355

Book SynopsisWe examine Hart’s peripatetic career as teacher, editor, journalist, lecturer, and public philosopher. It is biographical as well as an intellectual history of a fascinating character and prolific author. Our goal is to resurrect Hart's intellectual life in order to more deeply understand the significant isuues he not only confronted, but endured These issues primarily include academic freedom and humanizing education, with their direct links to community organizing and Danish folk schools-themes that run throughout the book. Instead of seeing Hart’s intellectual life as a cautionary tale against forceful criticism, we offer a view consistent with Hart: we should embrace the “full and frank” sense of academic freedom in order to demonstrate a truly democratic mode of associated living in universities and civic communities. Respecting different views should not mean mollifying critique. The opposite, in fact, is in keeping with our view of the open exchange of ideas characteristic of free societies and legitimate institutions of higher education. Other theme of significance in this book include the status of the social foundations in teacher education, social welfare, pacifism, community organizing, the broader purpose of schools and universities in the U.S., and Hart's commitment to adult education via Danish folk schools and rural community living. The politics of teacher education are legion, and this was no less so when Hart began his career in the early twentieth century. Debates were had about the degree to which normal schools, as two?year teacher training sites, should broaden their technical scope to include the liberal arts. This is the distinction between teacher training and teacher education. Those in favor of classroom management and efficient controls or methods for dispensing curriculum faced criticism from those who thought schools should be embryotic spaces for individual and democratic growth. Hart was clearly on the side of individual and democratic growth and this meant, in part, less order, less routine, and less bureaucratic imposition of standards from bureaucratic hierarchies. Positively, it meant engaging in debates that challenge students to think differently than they have ever thought before. As we show in the following pages, Hart was enormously successful at challenging ideas...and many people would rather not be challenged. As we noticed above, this position results in demonstrating a ""full and frank"" enactment of academic freedom.
