Textbooks make a world of difference; good ones can act as the basis for an effective Scheme of Work while bad ones confuse teachers and students alike.I read the Hodder Education textbooks for the new 9-1 Edexcel GCSE History course with growing relief. Both the Medicine Thorough Time and Weimar and Nazi Germany books are rigorous, thorough and engaging. A great deal of care and thought has clearly gone into finding and selecting interesting primary sources and I am certain these will support a sense of period and kindle real enthusiasm in students. In the Medicine textbook, Ian Dawson's focus on his own grandfather's role in WW1 is particularly inspiring. Students sometimes struggle in history because they are unable to see the connection between events in the past and their own lives; such a personalised case study offers students a very direct link between the modern world and the subjects they study in lessons. Both textbooks make 'getting better at history' an explicit focus. Including this material is a well-judged decision as it allows students to take ownership over their own learning and empowers them to learn independently. These parts of the books will be of particular use to departments lacking experienced staff as they break down exactly what the new examinations will be testing. These books have made preparations for the new GCSE far less stressful. They have increased my confidence in planning and have made the extensive revisions to curriculum feel much more manageable. We will be using these textbooks in our department and have no qualms in recommending them to other schools. -- Head of Humanities, New College Leicester * Victoria Daniels *

I did the Opportunity and Inequality in America (1920-1973) module and found it really interesting. However, I found that my school's resources didn't give me the detail I felt that I needed to get a high grade. This book was my holy grail. There's plenty of detail, but not too much to overwhelm the reader and the photos and diagrams really helped. I felt really confident during the exam thanks to this book and from getting grade 5s in mock exams I came out with a grade 9 in the real thing! -- Amazon reviewerWhen I received my copy of Understanding the Modern World I was pleased to see that the headings are clear, the layout of the pages is effective and the content is summarised in a manner which will be accessible to students.I like the number of supporting visuals throughout the book, particularly the maps and infographics that complement the written information. I also like the Focus Tasks and Think boxes which will be nice activities for students to complete in lessons or at home.I'm pleased to see examples of practice questions supporting the text and the Assessment Focus sections at the end of the chapters are fantastic. This will really help with the teaching of exam technique. -- Student Progress Leader (Humanities), Trinity Academy HalifaxA very well thought through and insightful book. For history teachers at large, it is a stimulating book that successfully bridges the divide between theory and practice. * Teaching History *An indispensable volume for anyone who wants to stay abreast of cutting-edge research in how we learn, teach, and ultimately come to understand the past. * Sam Wineburg, Margaret Jacks Professor of Education, Stanford University, USA *Bridging the gap between academic research and practicing history teachers, this book offers a fascinating collection of teacher research reviewed and reflected upon from a number of perspectives from academia. The teacher research deals with familiar themes like causation, change and evidence, but also offers some refreshing new insights into teaching substantive concepts, big history frameworks, significance of localities and diversity – topics not often dealt with in the usual research on teaching history. The approach the editors have taken in composing this book is truly novel and results into compelling reading for anyone interested in history education at the level of school practice, teacher training or academic research. * Arie Wilschut, Professor of Social Studies Education, Faculty of Education, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands *This accessible and enjoyable collection serves as an excellent summary of the lively field of research in history education; a spur and inspiration for future practitioner research, and an invaluable guide to some of the issues which history teachers encounter on a day to day basis. Highly recommended for those entering into further study in education, heads of history departments looking for inspiration, and all classroom practitioners keen to be engaged in the ongoing discussion about history education in British schools. An invaluable companion. * Alex Ford, Senior Lecturer, Institute of Childhood and Education, Leeds Trinity University, UK *An extraordinarily rich contribution to current debates about history teaching and about teachers' use of research to inform and enhance their practice.
