Holiday House Inc Follow the Money
Book SynopsisFrom mint, to pocket, to vending machine--tag along with George, a brand new quarter, and see how far a coin goes. With her signature bright, cartoony illustrations, Loreen Leedy explores American currency from the coins'' point of view. George starts his day at the U.S. Mint, but he''s soon swept away to a bank and dispensed, with a roll of his fellows, to make change at a grocery store. Again and again the quarter changes hands-- dropping into a vending machine, bouncing in a purse, slipping through a hole in someone''s pocket. At each transaction, the arithmetic is laid out to show how we add, subtract, and multiply money every day. Keen-eyed readers will notice the page numbers are represented in bills and coins, and the amounts pictured in each scene add up to the listed totals, aiding identification of different denominations of money. This funny introduction to cold hard cash also includes an author''s note about different kinds of curr

DK Show Me the Money Big Questions About Finance
Book SynopsisMoney makes the world go round, but how well do children understand finances? Show Me the Money breaks the mold of the school textbook and introduces young readers to the world of economics — from the history of money to e-commerce.Divided into sections that focus on economics, business, personal finance, and the history of trade, Show Me the Money takes technical jargon and breaks it down with easy-to-understand text, diagrams, and illustrations making a formerly dry subject interesting and relevant. Topical questions of ethics are addressed throughout, including free trade, fair trade, debt in the developing world, and the impact of business on the environment. The book also looks at personal finance from saving to pensions, and introduces key thinkers such as Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes, to take a look at the bigger picture of the global economy.Updated to be in tune with today's culture of environmental and social awareness, Show Me thTrade Review"Hall's presentation of this sometimes dull topic is remarkably vibrant." – Library Journal"We think the book, with its colorful cartoons and Lego-like illustrations of efficient people, isn't just a handy guide for tomorrow's little acquirers; its reminders could help a few adults, too." – Wall Street Journal

Hodder Education Economics for the IB Diploma
Book SynopsisDeveloped in cooperation with the International Baccalaureate®Ensure full coverage of the new syllabus with this comprehensive guide written by highly experienced authors, that explores all topics through inquiry, concepts, content and contexts and their interrelationships with each other.- Explore economics through the nine key concepts in the new course with our newly developed acronym for a deeper and more integrated understanding of the subject.- Includes new integrated subtopics of Economics of the environment and Economics of inequality and poverty which helps bring to light the global challenges facing the planet today and how these can be addressed using an Economics lens.- Apply new skills and knowledge to everyday life with examples and case studies.- Foster the attributes of the lB learner profile with explicit reference made throughout, as well as TOK links for every topic.- Prepare for the new assessment model with exam-style questions and review questions.- Avoid common mistakes and aim for the best grades with expert tips and hints.Trade ReviewI've been using the student book and it's so helpful to have this right now with the new syllabus. Both I and my students love the top tips and common mistakes sections - the common mistakes especially are really good at highlighting those points that perhaps might not get emphasized enough in class and end up as mistakes in their answers. -- Mine KanolThe Hodder textbook by Paul, Tanu and Sean is growing on my students. We like the no-nonsense approach, examples, diagrams and tips of things that are often confused (e.g: public goods and public sector). Highly recommend it! -- Samira Amin, KIS International School, Bangkok, Thailand * email *The authors have provided a bright, engaging, and well-constructed text that fully supports all IB Diploma Economists in understanding the entire syllabus, first assessment 2022. Firstly, the content is covered clearly and in the appropriate details with clear text supported by colourful diagrams and photographs. Key terms are highlighted in the margins to build the students vocabulary and support their understanding. Everything is where is should be and laid out in an exceedingly engaging way. However, the text goes further than this in supporting the student in developing their understanding of various areas of the IB Diploma. Of course, at the forefront of this is Assessment with links made between the text and how it could be assessed, Assessment Objectives (AOs) are introduced and continually referred back to. Sprinkled within the text are practise exam questions to develop students' familiarity with the different styles of assessment. The text develops in more detail by improving the students fuller understanding of the IB Diploma with connections to the Theory of Knowledge and AtL (Approaches to Teaching and Learning). It also contributes "Top Tips" and "Common Errors" thereby fully supporting the student learning and sharing the authors experience as educators and examiners. In all I feel this text makes a step forward towards being more of an holistic education tome than purely a content container. The 9 themes of the course are integrated well within the text. The authors have developed their own, WISE ChoICES, acronym which is certain to become synonymous with this course. This is referred to throughout the text to develop student conceptual understanding. One of my favourite aspects in the text is the use of Case Studies. There are a multitude of these spread throughout the book which will allow students a great way to integrate Real Life Examples into their study. The slight danger is that these may age badly over the life of the course but at this point they are exceedingly up to date and a great start. Hopefully, they will inspire students to see the connection between their study and the real world and allow them a focussed start for investigation opportunities to further develop their use of real-world examples. In summary a top text that fully supports all students, is engaging and supports the delivery of the course, and its philosophy, completely. -- Tom Brodie, IB Educator and Teacher

Chicago Review Press Henry David Thoreau for Kids: His Life and Ideas,
Book SynopsisAmerican author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau is best known for living two years along the shores of Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts, and writing about his experiences in Walden; or, Life in the Woods, as well as spending a night in jail for nonpayment of taxes, which he discussed in the influential essay “Civil Disobedience.” More than 150 years later, people are still inspired by his thoughtful words about individual rights, social justice, and nature. His detailed plant observations have even proven to be a useful record for 21st-century botanists. Henry David Thoreau for Kids chronicles the short but influential life of this remarkable American thinker. In addition to learning about Thoreau’s contributions to our culture, readers will participate in engaging, hands-on projects that bring his ideas to life. Activities include building a model of the Walden cabin, keeping a daily journal, planting a garden, baking trail-bread cakes, going on a half-day hike, and starting a rock collection. The book also includes a time line and list of resources—books, websites, and places to visit that offer even more opportunities to connect with this fascinating man.Trade Review"well organized and with plenty of grist for both minds and hands." Booklist"[Author Corinne] Smith intricately explores the various roles that Henry David Thoreau assumed throughout his lifetime."
