Book SynopsisReflecting on almost three decades of postsocialist transformations, the second edition of Globalization on the Margins explores continuities and changes in Central Asian education development since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, with a particular focus on the developments that took place since the production of the first edition in 2011. Rather than viewing these transformations in isolation, the authors place their analyses within the global context by reflecting on the interaction between Soviet legacies and global education reform pressures in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This new edition, in addition to a revised introduction and a newly added conclusion, consists of four thematic sections, each reflecting a key theme in the educational life of the Central Asian states. These thematic sections, introduction and conclusion collectively update our understanding of the recent developments and challenges in education of the five Central Asian states. They, however, go beyond mere information update, so as to complicate, re-engage, re-form and re-define the margins, taking up ‘margins’ a conceptual, geographic, cultural, and geo-political construct. Notwithstanding the diversity of local and international authors, variety of theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, and conceptual lenses, the essays reveal the complexity and uncertainty of the post-socialist education transformations. Instead of portraying the transition process as the influx of Western ideas into the region, Globalization on the Margins provides new lenses to critically example education as a contested field of diverse perspectives, competing forces, and multidirectional flow of ideas, concepts, and reforms in Central Asia.

Book SynopsisThis volume demonstrates how principals influence success in 14 elementary schools across Mexico. The cases show the importance of learning in an international school leadership context to address cultural, social, and academic needs of students in their families. Characteristics of successful principals are included, in order to exemplify contemporary practices, generate positive school climate, and the best possible development of children in diverse contexts. The cases presented in this book relate to challenging and vulnerable contexts or high-needs schools. Knowledge about successful school leadership in vulnerable contexts has been highly pursued in the U.S. and abroad, especially in countries where educational disparities relate to equity and social justice. The value of school principals merit visibility with a focus on the Americas.Especially in challenging contexts, school leadership is considered a determining factor in promoting the development of children. Nonetheless, there is much to learn about contemporary school leaders, who succeed in improving schools despite societal challenges. Challenges may include increasing socioeconomic restraints, high accountability demands, and reduced resources for public education. Of note, is that a formal preparation and assignment of principals is not equitably established in Mexico, generating a high need for leaders to be prepared for this important role. By highlighting best leadership practices, practitioners and scholars can reflect about United States and Mexico educational comparisons, and observe school improvement geared towards benefitting Latinx communities in both countries.

Book SynopsisWriting is a critical skill for academic and professional success, yet it is often neglected in schools. This problem is compounded by the fact that access to opportunities is limited without the ability to write well. According to achievement data, only a quarter of students in the United States are proficient writers, indicating a significant need for improvement in writing instruction. One contributing factor to this problem is the lack of school and district leadership in writing instruction. School improvement efforts are often concentrated on reading and math, leaving writing instruction overlooked. Additionally, issues related to writer identities, self-efficacy in writing, and educator training can also impact the effectiveness of instructional leadership in this critical subject. Instructional Leadership Efforts and Evidence-Based Practices to Improve Writing Instruction, edited by Jennifer VanSlander of Columbus State University, provides within this peer-reviewed research book an exploration of evidence-based practices aimed at developing instructional leaders and enhancing student achievement in writing. It covers a broad range of topics related to writing instruction, including learning theories, conceptual models, and the latest empirical research associated with the supervision, organization, implementation, and monitoring of writing programs and instructional approaches. With its emphasis on writer identities, self-efficacy, equitable and inclusive practices, curriculum planning and implementation, assessment, instructional frameworks, and managing instructional change, this book provides educators with a comprehensive guide to improving writing instruction. It is an essential resource for educators who seek to increase the effectiveness of instructional leadership and writing instruction at the classroom, school, or district level.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMainstream educational leadership has lost much of its footing as a progressive practice. More managers than wisdom?keepers, educational leaders no longer have authority to critique the toxicities of the present and imagine alternative futures. In public schools and higher education, the neoliberal emphasis on measurable outcomes shrinks the radius of concern for what educational leaders are leading toward. There’s a planet missing in mainstream discourses of sustainability in educational leadership, and this book aims to resituate the work of teaching/leading in the place where we stand. In a period of overlapping social/environmental crises, this book takes inspiration from Robert Jensen’s call for teachers and intellectual leaders to “go apocalyptic”, i.e., to face head?on the calamities that threaten our shared future on Earth. When leadership is situated within an apocalyptic context, we are called to reflect on educational injustice and unsustainability, while envisioning more hopeful futures. The work of apocalyptic leadership, though, isn’t all about future vision; it’s also about attending to what hurts and what heals in the present moment. Intended for aspiring and practicing educational leaders in both K?12 and higher education settings, as well as scholars in the fields of social justice and sustainability, this book begins mapping and traversing the affective, spiritual, pragmatic, and organizational geography of apocalyptic leadership. Such leadership holds dear the radical belief in our shared capacity to work gracefully with the painful awareness that tremendous challenges are inevitable, and yet, we have every opportunity for inching toward a more habitable future.Table of Contents Introduction: How to Carry On? • The Great School Rethink

Harvard Educational Publishing Group The Great School Rethink

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn invigorating examination of the potential for meaningful change in education, from one of the nation's most astute observers of schooling and school improvement. In The Great School Rethink, education policy sentinel Frederick M. Hess offers a pithy and perceptive appraisal of American schooling and finds, in the uncertain period following pandemic disruption, an ideal moment to reimagine US education. Now is the time, he asserts, to ask hard questions about how schools use time and talent, how they work with parents, what they do with digital tools, and how they meet the needs of their communities. As Hess explains, to rethink is to acknowledge the realities of the education system while opening one’s mind to possibility. With characteristic verve and wit, Hess guides readers through his rethink process, a versatile and easily implemented approach to identifying issues and brainstorming possible responses. He encourages readers to explore what improvements might alleviate current pressures and frustrations, such as teacher shortages and burnout, declining student performance, and compromised learning time. Whether their goal is to achieve better student engagement, increase parent involvement, or implement personalized learning, readers will develop the mindset to ask the right questions, to fully understand the problem that’s being solved, and to evaluate the probable effectiveness of proposed solutions.Brimming with challenging questions, robust exercises, and eye-opening data, this book is a must-read for education professionals, parent advocates, and anyone passionate about the future of American education.Trade Review“Both practical and provocative, this is the essential book for every educational leader asking, 'What now?'"—Jillian Balow, Virginia superintendent of education“Rick Hess is at it again. Once again, he’s challenging his readers to question their assumptions about education and how schools work. In this new book, he calls for us to use the disruptions created by the pandemic as an opportunity to rethink what we are doing in our schools. His call for schools to be more humane, challenging, and exhilarating resonates with me, and I’m sure it will appeal to a wide variety of parents and educators who are tired of the status quo and are ready for something better. Rather than offering a set of recipes or prescriptions for change, he wisely poses questions to reinforce his call for rethinking what we’re doing in the name of education to the nation’s children. Timely, provocative, and without any of the jargon of typical books on school reform, Hess offers a lot for us to think about in this important new book.”—Pedro Noguera, Emery Stoops and Joyce King Stoops Dean, Rossier School of Education, University of Southern California “This is not a book filled with lists of things to do. Instead, it gives a thoughtful roadmap on where to focus and how to approach some of the biggest and most important challenges we face in public education. In typical Hess fashion, it’s provocative, disruptive, and will challenge the notion of what it means to actually rethink and act boldly for our kids.”—Penny Schwinn, Tennessee commissioner of education“With the pandemic receding, school leaders, teachers, policy makers and others have an opportunity to improve the American education landscape significantly for millions of students. In The Great School Rethink, Hess explores key issues of time, teacher talent, choice, and cultivating relationships with parents with an eye toward helping education leaders change for the future by getting focused on the present. For leaders looking for where to start, the answer is ‘right here.’”—Derrell Bradford, president, 50CAN

Book SynopsisPathways to Excellence: Developing and Cultivating Leaders for the Classroom and Beyond examines how leadership and layers of leaders are developed and cultivated from the classroom to the boardroom. A wide body of research exists that focuses on specific educational leadership development and training programs. Evidence of being ready to lead upon program completion and performance post preparation is less available. Scant attention has been paid to programs that prepare leaders in different layers of an organization to not only become individually high performing but to also work collaboratively to create great schools. The book contends that the principal cannot effectively lead a school alone - other key players are critical. The editors have cast a wide net of respected contributors from various levels of organizational school leadership and specialties including traditional schools, charter schools, teacher education, district level leadership, special education, master teacher leadership, university and college level leadership. Implications for theory and practice will be discussed as it relates to leadership development and preparation of key players and constituents.Table of ContentsAbout the Authors. Copyright page. Book SynopsisResearching Practices Across and Within Diverse Educational Sites explores the role of educational research in uncertain, risky times. Researching practices and their consequences transpire unpredictably, depending on how we set about to understand these practices. The authors consider the unknowns in research action, and what promises researchers can keep to their communities as they embark on research action together. The authors examine how researching practices come to be constituted within and across cultural sites through consideration of the onto-epistemological bases of research action, broadly understood as “doing, through knowing and being”. Theoretical arguments and empirical examples of the in-situ development of research practices in Australia, Canada, Finland and Norway are provided, arising from reflection upon and dialogue about researching practices with particular groups. Within each chapter, the authors reflect on how knowledge production is influenced by how they go about their researching practices and who or what they regard as knowledge holders. These examples enable readers to reflect on their researching practices in different educational settings.Table of ContentsForeword; Stephen Kemmis Chapter 1. Book SynopsisWith the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly escalating higher education’s move online, this timely Handbook presents holistic conceptualisations of digital higher education which consider change at personal, pedagogic, and organisational levels. One principle of effective management of change is its potential to empower the individuals and organizations, its power to create and operate win/win situations. Book SynopsisContemporary Campus Life’s analysis of managerialism as a cause of academentia is partly framed by exigencies imposed by the Covid 19 pandemic. Keyan Tomaselli’s argument is that the virus has brought about an ecological correction that affects all human and animal kinds, one that management theory can learn from. Tomaselli’s very easy to read critique of market-driven neoliberalism is offered as a metaphor to analyse the excesses, contradictions and obstructions in contemporary university governance. With incisive satirical humour, Tomaselli delves into the quirks of university administrative systems and how these affects lived relations within sections of the academy, in teaching and research practice, science and reasoning.Trade Review“Arguably South Africa’s most perceptive cultural studies scholar, Keyan Tomaselli takes the academic reader on a decidedly uncomfortable, insightful, and entertaining ride through the managerial university to show us, barefaced, what we have become. You laugh and you cry. You squirm with discomfort and you nod in agreement. In the mindless pursuit of efficiency, productivity, and measurement, we have lost sight of the broader purposes of education and the intrinsic value of academic work. In this unusual book, the dour account of the social theorist is replaced with the cutting analysis of the satirist. In the process, Tomaselli has produced one of the best available satires of academic life.” - Jonathan Jansen, President of the Academy of Science of South Africa. “A witty, engaging critique of the impact of unfettered managerialism and the havoc it has wrought in South African academic institutions.” —Mbongeni Malaba, Bulletin of the National Library of South Africa “Thoroughly enjoyable.... Tomaselli’s most exquisite book offers extremely valuable insights into the working conditions of a South African academic experiencing the slow but steady rise of neoliberalism and managerialism.” — Thomas Klikauer and Meg Young, Australian Universities’ Review

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Viability of Organizations Vol. 3: Designing

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe design process for organizational structures sometimes resembles a random walk, especially when it is embedded in an arena of competing personal interests and power games. Many organizations still lack clear guidance and are therefore seeking a rigorous, nuanced, and impartial methodology for the design and development of their organizational structures, processes and behavioral repertoire. The Viable System Model (VSM) can help: by identifying the essential design principles and parameters that need to be considered, and which can be used to enhance an organization’s effectiveness, adaptability, cohesion and overall viability. This book, the third volume in a set of three, connects the VSM to the world of the standard organizational chart. It offers readers a new perspective on corporate functions and their contributions to the organization as a whole. Further, it shows them how the VSM can be used to develop viable organizational structures, following a detailed step-by-step approach. Lastly, it explains the vital processes, behaviors, and attitudes that need to be developed in order to make organizations truly viable.Readers will find solutions to, and guidelines on, many critical organizational design issues, e.g. designing job profiles; correctly mapping synergistically (“centrally”) operating units in the organizational chart; outsourcing processes; and handling matrix situations; as well as designing and implementing organizational change processes."This compendium is a most welcome contribution to Organizational Cybernetics. Lassl provides a detailed analytical and insightful perspective on the currently most powerful organization theory, which is a key to mastering complexity: the Viable System Model. The author also finds new, creative ways of showing the practitioner how to make the model work. If you apply it properly, you can reap huge benefits: the viability of your organization and a prosperous future."Prof. em. Dr. Markus Schwaninger, University of St. Gallen"There is nothing more practical than a good theory" (K. Lewin). This is exactly what Lassl’s books exemplify and prove. By advancing the VSM-based organizational theory and providing ample application-related examples, these books allow the readers to look at their organizations and management from a new perspective, and provides them with the knowledge to trigger and implement practical organizational changes.I have been able to draw upon many cutting-edge examples from Lassl’s books for my lectures on the VSM, which have repeatedly convinced students of its value and enabled them to gain an in-depth understanding of the VSM. Particularly Lassl’s elaborations on variety management and on the axiom of requisite vertical eigen-variety are cornerstones for every organizational design project, for value-oriented management, and for the overall viability of the organization. I highly recommend the book to all managers looking for ideas for future-oriented design of organizations and of value creation."Prof. Dr. Matthias Müller-Wiegand, Vice President Department Business and Law, Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln/University of Applied Sciences Table of ContentsPart I: Building the Bridge.- Part II: Designing Organizational (Chart) Structures.- Part III: Implementation.

Based on extensive interview data from 2012-2016, the authors demonstrate that the fundamental ethos underpinning the school’s improvement is a desire to meet the needs of young people in disadvantaged communities in order to equip them with the skills to allow them to transcend their situation. The authors posit that this school embodies the ‘comprehensive ideal’ of secondary education in England: that education should not be disadvantaged by background, and that the state should provide free and high quality education for all. • University and School Collaborations during a Pandemic: Sustaining Educational Opportunity and Reinventing Education

Book SynopsisBased on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as “ivory towers” being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach. Trade Review“The book’s main strength lies in the expertise of diverse contributors from various universities and private institutions. … The book will be of value to students, teachers, educational institutions, and policymakers who want to understand developments in education during and after the pandemic, and how universities were involved in it. This book reminds us that overcoming educational problems during the pandemic could not be achieved alone but required collaboration between all parties concerned in maintaining education in a crisis.” (Tanzilal Wanda Rizki, Educational Review, Vol. 74 (3), 2022) Table of ContentsChapter 1.
