Penguin Books Ltd Religion and the Decline of Magic

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWitchcraft, astrology, divination and every kind of popular magic flourished in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from the belief that a blessed amulet could prevent the assaults of the Devil to the use of the same charms to recover stolen goods. At the same time the Protestant Reformation attempted to take the magic out of religion, and scientists were developing new explanations of the universe. Keith Thomas''s classic analysis of beliefs held on every level of English society begins with the collapse of the medieval Church and ends with the changing intellectual atmosphere around 1700, when science and rationalism began to challenge the older systems of belief.Trade ReviewMonumental ... with a living treasure on each page, and probably the book that, in my whole life, I've pressed on other people most energetically. Book SynopsisWhat is the real meaning of ''an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth''? Where did the idea for the ''Jubilee 2000'' and ''Drop the Debt'' campaigns come from? And what, really, are the ''Ten Commandments''? In God, Justice, and Society, Jonathan Burnside looks at aspects of law and legality in the Bible, from the patriarchal narratives in the Hebrew Bible through to the trials of Jesus in the New Testament. He explores the nature of biblical law, legal thinking, and legal institutions by setting the biblical texts in their literary, social, and theological context.Burnside questions the biblical texts from the perspective of an academic lawyer and criminologist and asks what the biblical materials contribute to our understanding about the nature and character of law. He examines much of biblical law and narrative that has formed the basis of Western civilization, while at the same time exploring differences between biblical law and modern legal concepts and legal assumptions. The reTrade ReviewIt is a well-researched and well-argued text, which gives a detailed, and at the same time comprehensible, account of the nature of Biblical law, its interpretation and operation and the possible ways it might have shaped, challenged, and continues to challenge, modern legal approaches to a range of legal subjects. • Ritual

    Oxford University Press Inc Ritual

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRitual is part of what it means to be human. Like sports, music, and drama, ritual defines and enriches culture, putting those who practice it in touch with sources of value and meaning larger than themselves. Ritual is unavoidable, yet it holds a place in modern life that is decidedly ambiguous. What is ritual? What does it do? Is it useful? What are the various kinds of ritual? Is ritual tradition bound and conservative or innovative and transformational?Alongside description of a number of specific rites, this Very Short Introduction explores ritual from both theoretical and historical perspectives. Barry Stephenson focuses on the places where ritual touches everyday life: in politics and power; moments of transformation in the life cycle; as performance and embodiment. He also discusses the boundaries of ritual, and how and why certain behaviors have been studied as ritual while others have not. Stephenson shows how ritual is an important vehicle for group and identity formation; how it generates and transmits beliefs and values; how it can be used to exploit and oppress; and how it has served as a touchstone for thinking about cultural origins and historical change. Encompassing the breadth and depth of modern ritual studies, Barry Stephenson''s Very Short Introduction also develops a narrative of ritual''s place in social and cultural life. Book SynopsisDepressive disorders, which include major depressive disorder (unipolar depression), dysthymic disorder (chronic, mild depression), and bipolar disorder (manic-depression), can have far reaching effects on the functioning and adjustment of young people. Among both children and adolescents, depressive disorders confer an increased risk for illness and interpersonal and psychosocial difficulties that persist long after the depressive episode is resolved; in adolescents there is also an increased risk for substance abuse and suicidal behaviour. Unfortunately, these disorders often go unrecognised by families and physicians alike. Signs of depressive disorders in young people often are viewed as normal mood swings typical of a particular developmental stage. In addition, health care professionals may be reluctant to prematurely "label" a young person with a mental illness diagnosis. Yet early diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders are critical to healthy emotional, social, and behavioural development. This book presents the latest research in the field across a wide spectrum of countries.

Book SynopsisJohn Cromby is Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University, UK. Previously, he conducted research and teaching at the Universities of Nottingham and Bradford, and he has experience of working in mental health, drug addiction, and learning disability settings. His work engages with the ways that bodies and social processes come together to produce experience, including experiences of distress. In recent years this has meant exploring topics including paranoia, clinical sadness, emotion and fear of crime, and experimenting with methods of jointly analysing textual data and embodied activity. He is a former editor of the journal Subjectivity. David Harper is Reader in Clinical Psychology at the University of East London (UEL), UK. He trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Liverpool and worked as a clinical psychologist in National Health Service mental health services in the north-west of the UK for nine years. Superb, thoroughly researched and intellectually refreshing - a game changer in the field. It should be mandatory reading on every psychology course not just those dealing with mental health issues.' - Ron Roberts, Kingston University, UK 'At last, an undergraduate text that adopts a critical approach to 'Abnormal Psychology'. Psychology, Mental Health and Distress is the first of its kind, providing an accessible, engaging, and refreshing take on the standard material. Assembled by an impressive team of world-class scholars, this text extends the analysis of people's distress beyond biomedical and individualist framings, and toward a deeper exploration of the complex interplay between the body, the psych, and the social and political context. This is an important and revolutionary resource for students and scholars alike.' - Michelle Lafrance, St Thomas University, Canada 'I wish this book had been around when I was an undergraduate. Two aspects of the book are especially important. First, recognising the importance of culture in mental health, and secondly, giving a voice to mental health service users.' - Kate Bennett, University of Liverpool, UK 'In simple language and in no ambiguous terms, the authors of this book clearly bring out the limitations of current theory and research in psychiatry, abnormal and clinical psychology. The authors also go a step further to show how we can unshackle ourselves from these limitations. I whole heartedly recommend this book to both the beginning student and seasoned practitioner of mental health who is interested in helping people afflicted by mental distress.' - David Lackland Sam, University of Bergen, Norway 'An inspiring and ambitious text - a longed-for change to passive acceptances of psychiatric categories. This book is ideal for academics and students wishing to critically probe the limitations of DSM diagnoses.' - Leanne Franklin, Cardiff Metropolitan University 'The book gives an excellent introduction to the field of abnormal psychology and could be read by students, academics, service users and clinical psychologists both to understand the different causes to mental distress, but also how these problems could be best treated.' - Roger Hagen, Norwegian University of Science and Technology 'This is a book that is long overdue. So many books on psychopathology tend to be overly influenced by a biomedical and cognitive approach to understanding psychological distress, and rarely go further than that. This book takes a refreshing psychological, social and critical approach. It does not discard the importance of biological factors, but it considers in detail the various psychological and social determinants of mental health and distress. I recommend this book as a must-read for clinical psychology trainees, and for students and professionals working in the field of mental health.' - Poul Rohleder, Anglia Ruskin University, UK 'I think it is a brilliant book by what I have read so far - and it has been a long time in coming! • Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope to Depression.

New World Library Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope to Depression.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisUsed for over 8000 years as a medicine in the Amazon rainforest, ayahuasca is a powerful psychedelic with a fully formed shamanic cosmology. Central to the indigenous belief system is the plant teacher, Grandmother Ayahuasca, who communicates with people both during and after ceremonies. DMT (Dimethyltryptamine), the active ingredient in ayahuasca, is illegal in this country, listed on Schedule 1 as a dangerous drug with high potential for abuse and no medical benefits.Despite the legal risks and the unfortunate fact that ayahuasca is a powerful purgative as well as a powerful psychedelic, there are increasing numbers of people in Western countries who have experienced the medicine. This fast-growing group of people is highly educated, mature and sophisticated, often dubbed cultural creatives. Some have suffered with intractable psychiatric illnesses who, failing to find relief from Western medicine, are seeking new hope with ayahuasca. Others are psychospiritual explorers who have learned about the benefits of ayahuasca, are connected enough to the subculture to find a safe opportunity to take it and are willing to run the risk of an exotic, illegal experience.Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addictions, PTSD, and Anxiety explores how ayahuasca is being used in a Western, psychospiritual context. The underground ayahuasca community, with a level of sophistication far beyond most therapists, knows that this medicine can have an almost immediate anti-depressant effect. They know from personal experience that ayahuasca offers hope for those suffering from intractable depression, addictions, PTSD, death anxiety, and other suffering.Seemingly miraculous accounts of healing of psychiatric symptoms have appeared in the mainstream media, notably “Hell and Back” (2006) by Kira Salak, published in National Geographic Adventure — an article that according to the magazine’s editor-in-chief “received ‘20 times the reader response mail’ than any other article the magazine has published since its inception.” Some of this onslaught of interest is due to the fact that Salak enthusiastically described the immediate antidepressant benefits of ayahuasca.Listening to Ayahuasca is based on Rachel Harris’s original research, the largest study of ayahuasca use in North America, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Psychoactive Drugs. The research questionnaire was sixteen pages long with extensive open-ended questions that people answered at great length. Respondents often wrote Harris personal letters because they wanted to share even more. There is an unusual amount of enthusiasm for ayahuasca and for research about its potential benefits, not like the psychedelic drug craze of the sixties, but a mature appreciation for the healing powers of this medicine. As a research scientist Harris wanted to know: What happens in the days and weeks following the ceremony? Do people find relief from psychiatric symptoms and does that relief last? Do people change their attitudes and behaviors and do they maintain these changes? Do ayahuasca infused insights generalize into daily life? Do transcendent experiences with ayahuasca translate into a more spiritual life? People in the ayahuasca community acknowledge the importance of integration following a ceremony but very little is known about facilitating such a therapeutic process. As a therapist, Harris brings the reader into her office for an intimate glimpse into how people are using ayahuasca as part of their psychological healing and spiritual development. Her experience of working with people using ayahuasca is that the medicine is like a rocket boost along the psychospiritual path, helping people to heal from childhood and traumatic events as well as to explore spiritual states of being. Harris tells her own stories of ayahuasca ceremonies: suffering with nausea and vomiting, rising to ecstatic heights, surviving a bad trip, receiving advice from Grandmother Ayahuasca to do the research and struggling with questions about the reality of spirit realms. People in her research study describe a great lifting of depression along with improvement in their close relationships. They report eating healthier diets and reducing their alcohol intake. These results describe central issues in psychotherapy: mood, addictions, personal relationships and self-care.In contrast to these findings, therapists have had a poor track record trying to motivate people to improve their diets and other health behaviors. The most intriguing finding from the research was that 75% of the people said, “Yes” to the question: “Do you feel that you have a personal relationship with the spirit of ayahuasca?” People wrote paragraphs, enthusiastically sharing their personal experiences with this mysterious plant teacher. The author confesses that she also has a personal relationship with Grandmother Ayahuasca that continues to mystify her and for which she has no explanation.Through the author’s wide-ranging original research, as well as her personal experiences, Listening to Ayahuasca provides a balanced view into how this ancient medicine is being used to alleviate modern ills and open up pathways to spiritual realms.

Book SynopsisIf you have borderline personality disorder (BPD), you know that the intensity of your emotions can be suffocating, and can lead to self destructive behavior and relationship difficulties. Fluctuating emotions, black and white thinking, and a tendency to self-harm can make BPD especially difficult to treat. • The Globalization of Addiction

Oxford University Press The Globalization of Addiction

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis''The Globalization of Addiction'' presents a radical rethink about the nature of addiction. Scientific medicine has failed when it comes to addiction. There are no reliable methods to cure it, prevent it, or take the pain out of it. There is no durable consensus on what addiction is, what causes it, or what should be done about it. Meanwhile, it continues to increase around the world. This book argues that the cause of this failure to control addiction is that the conventional wisdom of the 19th and 20th centuries focused too single-mindedly on the afflicted individual addict. Although addiction obviously manifests itself in individual cases, its prevalence differs dramatically between societies. For example, it can be quite rare in a society for centuries, and then become common when a tribal culture is destroyed or a highly developed civilization collapses. When addiction becomes commonplace in a society, people become addicted not only to alcohol and drugs, but to a thousand other destructive pursuits: money, power, dysfunctional relationships, or video games. A social perspective on addiction does not deny individual differences in vulnerability to addiction, but it removes them from the foreground of attention, because social determinants are more powerful. This book shows that the social circumstances that spread addiction in a conquered tribe or a falling civilisation are also built into today''s globalizing free-market society. A free-market society is magnificently productive, but it subjects people to irresistible pressures towards individualism and competition, tearing rich and poor alike from the close social and spiritual ties that normally constitute human life. People adapt to their dislocation by finding the best substitutes for a sustaining social and spiritual life that they can, and addiction serves this function all too well. The book argues that the most effective response to a growing addiction problem is a social and political one, rather than an individual one. Such a solution would not put the doctors, psychologists, social workers, policemen, and priests out of work, but it would incorporate their practices in a larger social project. The project is to reshape society with enough force and imagination to enable people to find social integration and meaning in everyday life. Then great numbers of them would not need to fill their inner void with addictions.Trade ReviewAlexander's watershed study could not be more timely. Book SynopsisWhat is a grimoire? The word has a familiar ring to many people, particularly as a consequence of such popular television dramas as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. But few people are sure exactly what it means. Put simply, grimoires are books of spells that were first recorded in the Ancient Middle East and which have developed and spread across much of the Western Hemisphere and beyond over the ensuing millennia. At their most benign, they contain charms and remedies for natural and supernatural ailments and advice on contacting spirits to help find treasures and protect from evil. But at their most sinister they provide instructions on how to manipulate people for corrupt purposes and, worst of all, to call up and make a pact with the Devil. Both types have proven remarkably resilient and adaptable and retain much of their relevance and fascination to this day. But the grimoire represents much more than just magic. To understand the history of grimoires is to understand the spread of Christianity, the development of early science, the cultural influence of the print revolution, the growth of literacy, the impact of colonialism, and the expansion of western cultures across the oceans. As this book richly demonstrates, the history of grimoires illuminates many of the most important developments in European history over the last two thousand years.Trade ReviewFor anyone interested in magical writing and publication, it's essential. * Steven Moore, Fortean Times *Undoubtedly an important contribution to the field...The range of research here is, frankly astonishing. * Steven Moore, Fortean Times *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; 1. Divided into six books and consisting of some 26,000 verses, the poem was designed to convey a message of divine love and unity to the disciples of Rumi''s Sufi order, known today as the Whirling Dervishes. Like the earlier books, Book Three interweaves amusing stories with homilies to instruct pupils in mystical knowledge. It has a special focus on epistemology, illustrated with narratives that involve the consumption of food. This is the first ever verse translation of Book Three of the Masnavi. It follows the original by presenting Rumi''s most mature mystical teachings in simple and attractive rhyming couplets.

Book SynopsisMennonite German Soldiers traces the efforts of a small, pacifist, Christian religious minority in eastern Prussia-the Mennonite communities of the Vistula River basin-to preserve their exemption from military service, which was based on their religious confession of faith. Conscription was mandatory for nearly all male Prussian citizens, and the willingness to fight and die for country was essential to the ideals of a developing German national identity. In this engaging historical narrative, Mark Jantzen describes the policies of the Prussian federal and regional governments toward the Mennonites over a hundred-year period and the legal, economic, and social pressures brought to bear on the Mennonites to conform. Mennonite leaders defended the exemptions of their communities'' sons through a long history of petitions and legal pleas, and sought alternative ways, such as charitable donations, to support the state and prove their loyalty. Faced with increasingly punitive legaTrade Review“Jantzen emphasizes not only church and state dynamics but also tensions within the governing party, as well as those within the Mennonite community. The state increased its impact as the population became increasingly nationalistic. Jantzen also observes how theological developments among German Protestants influenced Mennonite pastors and thought leaders. Jantzen portrays an evolving Mennonite identity over a hundred-year period. His book makes a significant contribution to understanding the richness, diversity, and struggle in the Mennonite story.” —Mennonite Weekly Review“Mennonite German Soldiers offers a fascinating, carefully researched study of Prussian Mennonites during much of the nineteenth century. The author describes with exacting detail how persistent state and societal pressures coerced Mennonites into becoming ‘good German citizens.’ The book is organized into ten chapters, the last including observations on how profoundly the self-understanding of this Mennonite community changed, resulting in a culturally adapted Scriptural hermeneutic.” —Mennonite Brethren Herald“[A] fascinating analysis of how Prussian Mennonites adapted so thoroughly between 1772 and 1880 to German national identity and its attendant military responsibilities. . . . Jantzen deftly combines social, political, and family history along with the more traditional religious and political narratives to show us how Mennonites, as individuals, members of their communities, and family members, altered their religious identity. He also reveals the shifting attitudes and approaches taken by various levels and iterations of the Prussian government." —American Historical Review“This book deserves wide readership. The Mennonite experience in nineteenth-century Prussia/Germany is an intriguing example of the complex negotiations between a religious minority and the modern state. Jantzen’s analysis also holds valuable insights for the contemporary German Integrationsdebatte.” —German Studies Review“This is the first full-length study of a problem peculiar to Mennonites, but with implications for other minority religious groups and mainline churches: the issue of full political participation and enthusiastic military service in defense of shared national values. . . . This is a thoroughly researched work, graced by a broad view and written with a clear persuasive style that exhibits frequent poetic touches.” —The Mennonite Quarterly Review“In this engaging historical narrative, Mark Jantzen describes the policies of the Prussian federal and regional governments toward the Mennonites over a hundred-year period and the legal, economic, and social pressures brought to bear on the Mennonites to conform. . . . The public debates over their place in Prussian society shed light on a multi-confessional German past and on the dissemination of nationalist values.” —Canadian Mennonite“Jantzen’s study is highly recommended for anyone interested in Mennonite history. In addition to helping readers better understand the history of this important segment of the Mennonite past, it also sheds light on the character and identity of Mennonites from this community, who migrated to Russia and from there to North America and Latin America.” —Catholic Historical Review“With this highly informative volume, Professor Jantzen takes a major step in correcting the relative neglect, at least in English historical literature, of this period of Mennonite history in central Europe. While a number of German studies have addressed significant issues of this stressful century in German Mennonite history, none has done so with the analysis and Sitz im Leben perspective that Jantzen demonstrates.” —Journal of Mennonite Studies“In his remarkable study of Mennonites in the Prussian East, Mark Jantzen convincingly demonstrates how an examination of a seemingly marginal religious minority can make significant contributions to understanding larger historical processes, in this case those that shaped Prussia and Germany and the development of the modern state in Western Europe.” —Mennonite Life“This abundantly documented study explores the course of acculturation of the Mennonites, who from the sixteenth century on settled in the Vistula Delta and became Prussian subjects in the first partition of Poland. . . . That Jantzen’s discussion of the two literary works frames his social and political interpretation is also a welcome example of how productive it can be to combine one’s specialization with different approaches to history.” —Church History

Book SynopsisMany of us know the helpless predicament of losing control of our emotions. We may not be clinically "crazy" but instead "high reactors," experiencing overpowering feelings that knock us off balance, plunge us into depression, make us fly off the handle, or terrify us without warning. We can anticipate, understand, avoid and replace these "high reactions" by applying the methods of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT is an eclectic mix of cognitive-behavioral techniques, skills training, Zen, and existentialism, that has been honed for the treatment of the highest reactors among us--those with Borderline Personality Disorder. Author Scott Spradlin uses proven DBT techniques, worksheets and assessment exercises, to teach us to pay attention to emotions when they arise, assess our blocks to controlling them, and finally overcome these blocks and eliminate overpowering feelings. We learn what emotional triggers exist in our environments, become less judgmental about ourselves when we do experience a surge, and avoid or reduce the distress that emotions cause us. This workbook ultimately equips us to reduce the impact of painful feelings and increase the effects of positive ones so that we may tolerate life's ongoing stresses and achieve a sense of calm co-existence with our emotions.

  • The Rebirth of the Clinic: An Introduction to

Georgetown University Press The Rebirth of the Clinic: An Introduction to

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis"The Rebirth of the Clinic" begins with a bold assertion: the doctor-patient relationship is sick. Fortunately, as this engrossing book demonstrates, the damage is not irreparable. Today, patients voice their desires to be seen not just as bodies, but as whole people. Though not willing to give up scientific progress and all it has to offer, they sense the need for more. Patients want a form of medicine that can heal them in body and soul. This movement is reflected in medical school curricula, in which courses in spirituality and health care are taught alongside anatomy and physiology. But how can health care workers translate these concepts into practice? And how can they strike an appropriate balance, integrating and affirming spirituality without abandoning centuries of science or unwittingly adopting pseudoscience? Physician and philosopher Daniel Sulmasy is uniquely qualified to guide readers through this terrain. At the outset of this accessible, engaging volume, he explores the nature of illness and healing, focusing on health care's rich history as a spiritual practice and on the human dignity of the patient. Combining sound theological reflection with doses of healthy skepticism, he goes on to describe empirical research on the effects of spirituality on health, including scientific studies of the healing power of prayer, emphasizing that there are reasons beyond even promising research data to attend to the souls of patients. Finally, Sulmasy devotes special attention and compassion to the care of people at the end of life, incorporating the stories of several of his patients. Throughout, the author never strays from the theme that, for physicians, attending to the spiritual needs of patients should not be a moral option, but a moral obligation. This book is an essential resource for scholars and students of medicine and medical ethics and especially medical students and health care professionals.Trade ReviewAn insightful resource, obviously the product of intensive study, rigorous analysis, personal experience, and prayerful reflection... There is no question that any health care professional would benefit greatly from reading The Rebirth of the Clinic. Health Progress The Rebirth of the Clinic is a highly worthwhile collection ... Sulmasy's book is an eloquent call for medical practice as focused on relationships as one disease, with whole lives as much as isolated symptoms. It is a passionate call to embrace religion and spirituality as more than means to therapeutic ends... This book is vital reading for anyone interested in spirituality, health care, and the continuing presence of the sacred in the midst of the clinic. Sulmasy's work may not transform the American health care system, but it will inspire readers to think carefully about these issues. Georgetown University Press Transhumanism and Transcendence: Christian Hope

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe timeless human desire to be more beautiful, intelligent, healthy, athletic, or young has given rise in our time to technologies of human enhancement. Athletes use drugs to increase their strength or stamina; cosmetic surgery is widely used to improve physical appearance; millions of men take drugs like Viagra to enhance sexual performance. And today researchers are exploring technologies such as cell regeneration and implantable devices that interact directly with the brain. Some condemn these developments as a new kind of cheating -- not just in sports but in life itself -- promising rewards without effort and depriving us most of all of what it means to be authentic human beings. "Transhumanists," on the other hand, reject what they see as a rationalizing of human limits, as if being human means being content forever with underachieving bodies and brains. To be human, they insist, is to be restless with possibilities, always eager to transcend biological limits. As the debate grows in urgency, how should theology respond? Christian theologians recognize truth on both sides of the argument, pointing out how the yearnings of the transhumanists -- if not their technological methods -- find deep affinities in Christian belief. In this volume, Ronald Cole-Turner has joined seasoned scholars and younger, emerging voices together to bring fresh insight into the technologies that are already reshaping the future of Christian life and hope.Trade ReviewA deeply engaging and critical guide to competing arguments about being human within the contemporary context. -- Peder Jothen, St. Olaf College Religious Studies Review The diversity and quality of these contributions make the volume useful for those interested in the intersection of theological ethics and transhumanist ideals. In Doctoring the Mind, leading clinical psychologist Richard Bentall reveals the shocking truths behind the system of mental health care in the West. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewElliot R. Wolfson's new work is a masterful exposition of the phenomenology and ontology of Habad thought, particularly its bearing on messianic mysteries and consciousness. This study is an extraordinary integration of precise philology, philosophical comprehension, and the inner course of Habad theosophy as it flows through the discourses of its seven masters. Wolfson analyzes the climactic position of Rabbi Schneerson within this complex with exemplary and original insight. -- Michael Fishbane, Nathan Cummings Professor of Jewish Studies, University of Chicago Elliot R. Wolfson's dark brilliance is itself an open secret, unfolding mesmerizing rhythms of chiastic paradox. The relevance of his commentary cannot be confined to the study of a particular movement, religion, or discipline. In this philosophical meditation on a controversial strand of recent messianism, a profound historical kabbalism appears edged with a postmodern Kafkaesque irony--in the legacy of a 'future that is already present as the present that is always future.' -- Catherine Keller, Drew University, and author of Face of the Deep: A Theology of Becoming This highly original reading of Menachem Mendel Schneerson's messianic doctrine renders irrelevant much of the ongoing speculation and debate on the question of whether or not the Lubavitcher Rebbe, like the bulk of his following, believed that he was the Messiah. The book argues insightfully that beneath his well-attested endeavors to demonstrate the imminence the messianic advent, and his resort to the traditional language of Jewish messianic speculation, lays the paradoxical 'open secret' of a totally impersonal Messiah who, reflecting the nature of the infinite kabbalistic godhead itself, can be revealed in the world only by way of concealment. His advent is conceptualized as a universal expansion of spiritual consciousness, a nonevent that continuously occurs, has occurred, and will occur 'immediately, without delay, in actuality,' which effectively means beyond measurable time. -- Ada Rapoport-Albert, University College London Wolfson's spiritual quest is contagious, and the intrepid reader will brave the many difficult passages in order to follow him -- Lawrence Grossman Forward Every researcher or enlightened reader should be interested in this profound construction, in order to understand the most significant Jewish messianic phenomenon in the Jewish world of the last two generations. -- Alon Dahan H-Judaic Wolfson has not only produced an excellent study of Rabbi Mena?em Mendel Schneerson's views, but he has argued convincingly that this work will serve as a paradigm for Jewish philosophic thought. -- H.D. Book SynopsisBlaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Penseés is a collection of philosohical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in pscyhological, social, metaphysical and - above all - theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal''s analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God''s grace.Table of ContentsPensees - Blaise Pascal Translated with a Revised Introduction by A. Book SynopsisThe majority of dispensing audiologists practice in a commercial environment in which they have to sell a product, yet most receive little formal training on how to sell. Consultative Selling Skills for Audiologists outlines a specific system that blends several innovative clinical tests - such as the QuickSIN and Acceptable Noise Level test - with proven interpersonal communication strategies that enhance the audiologist's persuasiveness in a commercial working environment. Based on nearly 20 years of experience, the author shares case studies to illustrate common clinical scenarios routinely encountered in a busy dispensing practice, and how a selling system can help increase effectiveness. Whether you are a recent Au.D graduate or a seasoned hearing health care professional, this book is packed with plenty of useful, patient-centered strategies to help you excel in your clinic when you are knee-to-knee with any patient. The path to professional independence and financial security largely rests with your ability to sell.By blending the art of effective communication with innovative pre-fitting clinical tests, Consultative Selling Skills for Audiologists will provide you with the tools you need to be a more successful audiologist in a either commercial or medical environment.Trade ReviewJonathan Parsons, Consultant Clinical Scientist, Managing Director, Chime Social Enterprise, ENT & Audiology News, (2014): "...I am very glad that I read [this] as I rather enjoyed it and found it very useful from a National Health Service (NHS) dispensing perspective and as a manager of an NHS audiology service. The clue is in the title- this book is about selling hearing aids- very much in a quality way. It takes you through the journey from first contact with the patient, gathering patient history and understanding their difficulties, conducting assessment, discussing the results and closing the sale. This book is packed with resources and references current and past research...Much use is made of the 'Bright Ideas' sections in the book which are tips on practice of concise summaries of the text. This helps break up what could have been a dry text but isn't. In fact, this book manages to perform a neat trick, in that it is far from simplistic in content but easy to read. It holds the attention to the end...I would recommend this book for any professional involved in the hearing aid dispensing process, especially those embarking on a career. Whilst reading, I could not help but compare this total quality approach to that prominent in 'Any Qualified Provider'."Table of ContentsChapter 1 - The Path to Understanding the Patient, Yourself & the Business Chapter 2 - The Science of Selling Chapter 3 - You Said What?
