I loved reading Alice’s book'' Grace Victory''Such an honest and inspiring book'' Leanne Hainsby———''For anyone who has thought that being thinner would make them happier, this book is for you''In 2017, Alice Liveing, known as Clean Eating Alice, was the UK’s leading personal trainer. She had over half a million Instagram followers, counted celebrities amongst her clients, appeared on the cover of Women’s Health and was recognised as the embodiment of health. But this was the furthest thing from the truth as, in reality, Alice’s life was being controlled by sustained periods of disordered eating and an addiction to exercise. In Give Me Strength, Alice shares her story in full for the first time; what led to her darkest moments of restriction; the ultimatum that forced her to change; and how she overcame those demons to find true health, happiness and find peace with her body.Revealing the four questions she asks herself before working out, Why, What, When and How, Alice shows how us how we can all move in a way that prioritises how we feel over how we look - and ditch the idea that being thinner will make us happier, for good.

Book SynopsisThe ultimate guide to dissemination and implementation research for public health, medicine, and the social sciencesIn the past twenty years, dissemination and implementation (D&I) research has sought to narrow the gap between the discovery of new knowledge and its application in public health, mental health, and health care settings. The challenges of moving research to practice and policy are universal, and future progress calls for collaborative partnerships and cross-country research. The fundamental tenet of D&I research-taking what we know about improving health and putting it into practice-must be the highest priority. Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health is the definitive roadmap to effecting change in health and science from today''s leading D&I researchers. With insights from around the globe, these scholars collectively address key issues in the field including how to evaluate evidence based on effective interventions, how to design an appropriate study, and hTrade ReviewThe third edition of Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health is comprehensive, relevant, insightful, and practical. It addresses one of the greatest challenges across health and many other fields—the persistent gap between evidence and its implementation to benefit people and the planet. This new edition builds upon the outstanding foundation of earlier editions, with an even stronger focus on equity and global settings. It is a must-read book. * Barbara K. Rimer, DrPH, Alumni Distinguished Professor and Dean Emerita, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill *This third edition arrives at the right time for scholars and all others committed to implementing effective strategies into health practice and policy. Book SynopsisTrade Review"A work distinguished by deep scholarship, clear exposition and comprehensive coverage. . . . A smooth narrative covering nearly five centuries of Jesuit history in just over 800 pages. . . . The Jesuits is the best single-authored book on the subject I have seen."---Ronnie Hsia, Times Literary Supplement"This is a magisterial book, massive in its compass, its erudition, and its attention to detail. The history of the Jesuit order has usually been written by one of the members of the Society of Jesus, and yet here is a book of amazing scholarship, written by an outsider and, arguably, all the better for that; for the author brings a freshness of outlook to his task."---Lavinia Byrne, Church Times""[A] comprehensive history. . . . A remarkably fair assessment of the complex history of the Jesuits."---Peter Davidson, Literary Review"A comprehensive and unbiased history of the Society of Jesus. . . . Friedrich doesn’t shy away from controversial topics (such as the Jesuits’ roles in colonization and American slavery), nor does he attempt to either apologize for or demonize the people who are his object of study." * Christian Century *"A fast-paced and richly researched history. . . . Friedrich’s sweeping chronicle has much to offer." * Publishers Weekly *"However scholarly this magnum opus is, it can be read and enjoyed by anyone interested in the topic. The translation from the German original, published in 2016, is exceptionally gratifying."---Cornelius Michael Buckley, S.J., Catholic World Report"Friedrich tells this story with an exceptional command of a wide variety of sources in several languages. He’s assisted by John Noel Dillon in a graceful and very readable English translation. The result is a book that will be of benefit not only to scholars, but also to general readers."---Timothy Walch, Catholic News Service"A fine accomplishment. . . . Friedrich writes in a clear and organized manner that makes for something of a ‘page turner’ experience; whereas some histories of the Jesuits sacrifice readability for density of detail, Friedrich achieves a good balance."---Doug Jones, Jesuit Post"[An] immensely readable history of the order that will appeal to an audience beyond the Catholic tradition."---Thomas Filbin, Arts Fuse

Book SynopsisAmong the first books to focus on physician engagement during a Lean effort, Sustaining Lean in Healthcare: Developing and Engaging Physician Leadership explains how to ensure ongoing physician participation long after the consultant leaves. Dr. Michael Nelson, an early adopter of Lean in healthcare, explains how to use these synergic tools to achieve consistently high levels of quality and clinical care outcomes. The book begins with a Lean primer that provides a firm foundation in essential Lean conceptsincluding value stream maps, 6S, Kanban, Heijunka, and Gemba Walks. Next, it examines how to create a physician engagement plan and covers the specific responsibilities of physician leadership through the Lean transformation. Explaining what to look for when judging success, it provides numerous examples that demonstrate how to sustain success over the long term.Complete with tips for spotting the danger signs that might indicate yTrade ReviewA super overview of Lean process improvement for any healthcare leader. A focused approach to Lean that will engage the physician audience. The book will be an excellent one as preassignment reading for a Leadership Development Institute that focuses on Lean and for the organization getting ready to embark on a Lean journey, particularly if they want greater physician engagement. ... It could be particularly effective if used as a book club format for physician leaders in an organization as a way of energizing them. The book has good follow-up exercises that demonstrate key points. Dr. Nelson has researched the material thoroughly. The book has very specific medical practice and hospital examples. ... Outstanding... I highly recommend this book. —Lynne Cunningham, Senior Coach, The Studer GroupOver the past two decades Lean Operations has made several significant runs in healthcare. The first attempts, with a few notable exceptions, lost momentum and were not sustainable because the incentives always seem to be misaligned. In this book, Dr. Nelson draws on his forty years of medical practice and his experience as an early adopter of Lean for healthcare, to identify a crucial piece to aligning healthcare organizations for success; Physician Engagement. It’s my experience that Lean methods work on processes in all industries, but nowhere is the human element more critical to their success than healthcare, and no one role is more critical than the Physician. Healthcare executives and clinicians will appreciate and learn from Dr. Nelson’s insight.—Robert Iversen, Director, Accenture Management ConsultingOf the many books written about Lean journeys, Mike Nelson’s book offers a unique perspective. A physician himself, Mike focuses on the role he and his colleagues can play in creating and sustaining a Lean environment. He speaks from first-hand experience, having taken his own Lean journey and playing a key role in the quality aspect of a highly successful ValuMetrix® Services Lean engagement. His book clearly illustrates a fact that is all-too-often often overlooked – physicians must be included in any Lean engagement, since they are true enablers of change and are critical to sustaining the transformation. Instead of writing another how-to book, Mike has taken the opportunity to provide insights that are sure to help any healthcare organization sustain the impact of its Lean engagement.—Rick Malik, Worldwide Director, ValuMetrix® Services, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Nelson does Lean healthcare a service as a physician and Lean practitioner focusing on engaging the physician. In this valuable resource, Nelson stresses and supplies guidance regarding the role of physician champion, and senior management’s responsibilities to the Lean initiative. As importantly, he provides realistic estimates of timelines for projects, expected satisfaction, quality, and financial paybacks, as well as for the time commitments required for Lean healthcare initiatives to become durable successes.—David Mann, PhD, Principal, David Mann Lean ConsultingNelson’s great service in this book is to approach Lean healthcare from the practitioner’s perspective and provide a very valuable and thoughtful approach which simplifies and organizes the steps needed to effectively and successfully take advantage of the significant contributions Lean management can make to their practices with the minimum expenditure of time and financial resources.—Edward D. Martin, MD, Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Martin Blanck & Associates, Inc.Over the years, I have read a number of books on Lean implementation. Dr Nelson's approach is clear, practical, easy to read and prescriptive. Efficient use of resources and time are some of the most important directives for leaders to survive in these reforming times. Lean has become a critical predictor of successful systems going forward. Sustaining Lean in Healthcare is the book to get this done. Well done, Dr. Nelson. I learned a ton.—Stephen C. Book SynopsisMercy in Action explores Pope Francisâs remarkable efforts to renew catholic social teaching. The book examines what he has said, done, and written on six critical issuesâeconomic inequality, worker justice, the environment, family life, refugees, and peacemakingâand highlights both continuity and change in Catholic social teaching.Trade ReviewMassaro masterfully explores and explains what Pope Francis has added to Catholic social teaching and how he also builds on previous social teaching by popes such as Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI. . . . One is unlikely to find a more cogent, comprehensive, sympathetic yet sometimes critical, well-written, and exhaustive treatment of Francis’s social teaching than that found in M.’s book. * Theological Studies *Thomas Massaro, SJ, is one of the world's great experts, and great explainers, of the church’s social teaching. As a Jesuit, he is also someone with a deep knowledge of what lies behind Pope Francis's words and deeds—especially as they relate to issues of economic justice, labor, ecology, family life, advocacy for the marginalized, and peacemaking. Father Massaro's tremendous knowledge of Catholic social teaching together with his profound appreciation for Jesuit spirituality have combined to make a superb book. It's accessible, inviting and, most of all, wise. -- James Martin, SJ, author of In Good Company and The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) EverythingCatholic social teaching has a long and noble tradition, but it needs a rebooting in our fractious and backsliding era. Thomas Massaro brilliantly shows how Pope Francis takes that teaching to an entirely new level, drawing on the power of ‘trickle-up’ wisdom and commitment, not just pronouncements from above. Book SynopsisSmallpox, yellow fever, malaria, and polio, fearful diseases that once beset Americans, are now largely, just unhappy history. Yet from our confrontations with these past plagues come lessons that inform today's struggles to understand and remedy problems like HIV/AIDS, coronary heart disease, and Ebola infection. American Plagues weaves stories of encounters with epidemics over our history with lessons that aid our present understanding of health and disease. Doctors and clergy, writers and newsmen, public health institutions, and even an entire town relate their personal experiences with various outbreaks and the ways they were identified, contained, and treated. The stories are filled with ambition and accomplishment, jealousy and disappointment, public spirit and self-interest, egotism and modesty. Some episodes lead to vital discoveries. Others were unproductive. Yet each proved instructive and expanded our abilities to gather and process information in ways that improve medicinTrade ReviewThe term plague is no longer limited to bacterial or viral infections, but is expanding to include heart disease and cancer in this updated edition of a popular textbook. Gehlbach, dean emeritus of the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, leads a thoroughly engrossing exploration of American medical history across 12 chapters, which range from a Boston smallpox outbreak in 1721 to a measles outbreak at Disneyland in 2014. Gehlbach describes how devastating epidemic diseases have been encountered, misunderstood, understood, and then conquered (smallpox, yellow fever, tuberculosis, polio) or ameliorated (heart disease, AIDS). He also addresses the deadly new problem of multiply antibiotic-resistant infections as well as contemporary medicine’s disastrous bête noire: the anti-vaccine movement. In addition to lauding fine accounts of the great historical studies (the Framingham study of heart disease, the Wynder and Graham study of lung cancer), Gehlbach warns that plenty of research turns up nonsense, and he delivers a painless primer on how to tell good studies from bad. Readers will have little trouble understanding his explanations of bias, contamination, true positives versus false positives, and meta-analysis. Gehlbach’s book is often assigned reading for college-level public health classes, and all textbooks should be as entertaining. * Publishers Weekly, Starred Review *Gehlbach provides a vivid picture of life in the United States as extraordinary health events occurred throughout history. Beginning his discourse with the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia in 1793, the author describes the scenes in a manner that pulls the reader into the setting, so that he or she can experience the gravity of each episode. The author serves as a ‘health detective’ by exploring the environment, events, and players involved within 11 significant health events, which include more modern scenarios (HIV/AIDS, health-related infections, the recent outbreak of measles, and the misunderstanding of vaccinations). The author recognizes the importance of public health surveillance and data analysis, and chronicles the development of epidemiology, which had an essential impact on health-related proceedings. In addition to a descriptive, insightful narrative, the author uses extensive references and frequent illustrations. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers. * CHOICE *American Plagues: Lessons from Our Battles with Disease is not just a useful text book for any public health or medical student, it is a useful read for anyone wishing to have a better understanding of public health in America and how we have learned to address plagues and epidemics over the years. * Herald and Review *The updated version of his 2005 volume, American Plagues: Lessons from Our Battles with Disease, succeeds admirably. It conveys Gehlbach’s infectious enthusiasm for his subject so effectively that general readers will also relish the historical detective’s account of medical mysteries stretching back to the founding of the nation…. Gehlbach’s updated edition includes chapters on fresh patterns of infectious disease and their spread, sometimes by the very health care providers and in hospitals dedicated to battling such diseases, a circumstance first identified 170 years ago by Dr. Oliver Wendell Homes…. Gehlbach’s considerable narrative skills are exceeded only by his mastery of how American medicine and public health have progressed incrementally, always ‘gaining from experience.’ * Bulletin of the History of Medicine *This new edition of American Plagues: Lessons from Our Battles with Disease is most welcome. Ten years ago I was impressed with how history and clinical medicine was masterfully woven together by Stephen Gehlbach into a coherent narrative that worked remarkably well in the classroom. This edition is no different. More than just a reprinting, this updated version has new chapters on the problem of infections bred by the very professions charged with combating them and the current wave of dangerous misinformation regarding vaccines. Having taught courses in the medical humanities for some twenty years, I can say with confidence that this is one of the best instructional texts I’ve ever used, a verdict rendered not just by me but by my students who used it. Even beyond the classroom, American Plagues has lessons for us all, demonstrating that history and clinical practice are inextricably tied together. This book should be on the shelf of every academic library. -- Michael A. Flannery, Professor and Assistant Dean for Special and Historical Collections, UAB Libraries, University of Alabama at BirminghamStephen Gehlbach's book provides a remarkable insight into how we came to understand the critical importance of public health measures as major determinants of disease incidence and mortality. While the book is nominally about the spread of infectious disease, it is really far more than that. Its rich trove of historical anecdotes reveals how we developed our current insights in the origins of diverse diseases and the biological processes that allowed them to flourish in human populations. The ultimate benefit from these stories come from the clear lessons they teach about disease prevention, revealing how reductions in disease incidence will lead inevitably to corresponding reductions in disease-related mortality. In fact, disease prevention has been increasingly pushed off-stage in recent decades, yielding ever more frequently to reports of dramatic advances in medical treatment. However, with every passing year, it becomes increasingly clear that major reductions in various diseases and the mortality that they cause will only come from preventing them rather than treating them once they have been diagnosed. This critical lesson is taught time and again in this highly readable and entertaining tour of the origins of the science of public health. -- Robert Weinberg, PhD, Daniel K. Ludwig Professor for Cancer Research,Whitehead Institute, Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyDr. Stephen Gehlbach has written an eminently readable and scholarly epilogue to his book of ten years ago then entitled American Plagues: Lessons from Our Battles with Disease. This updated version captures many of the more modern plagues afflicting populations world-wide and complements rather than replaces the earlier volume. Those interested in medical history will surely want to peruse this current volume. -- John D. Hamilton, MD, Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Duke University; author of the History of Infectious Diseases at Duke in the 20th CenturyIntrigued by the mysteries of medicine Gehlbach brings to life detective stories of American epidemics from the smallpox outbreak in Boston of 1721 to the Disneyland measles eruption in the 21st century. He takes us to the successes and shortcomings as physicians grappled with causes and cures and battled both the diseases and each other as epidemics raged and differences of opinion counterbalanced each other leaving the layman to ponder. Written with wit and wisdom, peppered with historical vignettes and humorous tales of eccentric physicians, along the way, the readers, both health professionals and laymen grasp the progression of the scientific method and the significance of epidemiology. -- N. Lynn Eckhert, MD, Dr PH, Senior Lecturer; Harvard Medical SchoolI recommend the revised edition of Stephen H. Gehlbach’s American Plagues. Gehlbach’s work has long been a staple text for me to familiarize my students with the history of infectious disease control in my introduction to American Medicine Courses. This new edition updates the chapter on AIDS and other parts while adding two excellent and necessary chapters: one on hospital-borne infections; and one on the consequences of misplaced and ill-informed fears about contagion and disease causation. Gehlbach’s analysis of the consequences of the anti-vaccination movement and the challenge of Ebola transmission in America will provoke excellent discussion in the classroom about the need for evidence and theories of disease. Students of public health or the history of medicine will also find the italicized terminology sprinkled throughout the historical vignettes very valuable for learning basic principles of epidemiology, clinical science, and public health. These features and this book will be of great utility to teachers for that reason as well. I strongly commend this new edition. -- Stephen Inrig, PhD, MSCS, Director, Interdisciplinary Healthcare Research; Director, Health Policy and Management Graduate Program; Mount Saint Mary's University, Los AngelesStephen Gehlbach masterfully tells the fascinating stories of major American disease outbreaks over almost three centuries. Each narrative illuminates the passion and intellect needed to solve the epidemic, both infectious and chronic. The historical context and clearly presented data evidence grab the reader. What better way to learn epidemiology than by following the steps, one by one, of resolving these public health threats. This book is a superb addition for public health students, undergraduate and graduate. As well, it is very good read. -- Harrison C. Book SynopsisThe problem of how to understand and to treat masochism has plagued the vast majority of clinicians. The Clinical Problem of Masochism, edited by Deanna Holtzman, PhD, and Nancy Kulish, PhD, focuses on the common and difficult clinical problems posed by masochistic patients who are spread throughout all diagnostic categories. Foremost psychoanalytic clinicians in the field from various theoretical backgrounds demonstrate their approaches to working clinically with these problems. Each expert provides detailed clinical examples, making their approaches and suggestions come alive. This volume, unique in its varied clinical and practical focus, offers therapists of all theoretical persuasions ideas on how to think about and help individuals suffering from masochistic difficulties.Trade ReviewMasochism is explored by contemporary psychoanalytic thinkers in a nuanced and complex fashion. Clinicians will find many ideas about the meaning and function of masochism relevant to their work with patients. The book is filled with case studies that provide helpful examples of interventions that can free patient-clinician pairs from treatment impasses. -- Judy L. Kantrowitz, PhD, Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, Harvard Medical SchoolIn a wonderful edited array of richly illuminating essays, based on their long term workshop at APsaA, Holtzman and Kulish have updated “masochism”—this common but baroque pursuit of psychic pain. They show clinically modern expansions and variants of the original Freudian formulations, and new re-interpretations. Significant writers and clinicians here apply the current wide range of psychoanalytic theories—ego psychological and developmental, self psychology, relational, object relational, attachment and affect regulation, and Kleinian. The result is a substantial and helpful read. All clinicians and teachers will benefit from the thinking in these searching and often challenging clinical examples -- Rosemary H. Balsam M.D., Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis; Yale Medical School; author of WOMEN'S BODIES IN PSYCHOANALYSISThe term masochism brings to mind some of the most difficult theoretical problems, and some of the most troublesome clinical dilemmas, in psychoanalysis. Some people actively seek pain, suffering, and humiliation. Who are they? How did they come to these strategies? What are their clinical manifestations? How can we understand them? How can we help them? Deanna Holtzman and Nancy Kulish have assembled the foremost thinkers in the field—ego psychology, object relations, Kleinian, self-psychology, developmentalist—to explore these questions, offer illustrations of their clinical work, and provide support for practitioners who experience the pain of working with these suffering patients. Book SynopsisCollects the correspondence of a leader of the Northern Rebellion of 1569 who became a prominent figure in the English Catholic exile community.Lady Anne Percy (1536-1591), Countess of Northumberland, rode with rebel forces, leading small parties of men independently, and intercepting post between Queen Elizabeth and the Regent of Scotland.
