  • Sedated: How Modern Capitalism Created our Mental

Atlantic Books Sedated: How Modern Capitalism Created our Mental

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA provocative and shocking look at how western society is misunderstanding and mistreating mental illness. Perfect for fans of Empire of Pain and Dope Sick.In Britain alone, more than 20% of the adult population take a psychiatric drug in any one year. This is an increase of over 500% since 1980 and the numbers continue to grow. Yet, despite this prescription epidemic, levels of mental illness of all types have actually increased in number and severity.Using a wealth of studies, interviews with experts, and detailed analysis, Dr James Davies argues that this is because we have fundamentally mischaracterised the problem. Rather than viewing most mental distress as an understandable reaction to wider societal problems, we have embraced a medical model which situates the problem solely within the sufferer and their brain. Urgent and persuasive, Sedated systematically examines why this individualistic view of mental illness has been promoted by successive governments and big business - and why it is so misplaced and dangerous.Trade ReviewSedated is a polemic of great clarity that will make you feel at once angry and reassured. * New Statesman *A wonderful, moving and truly life-changing book. Sedated is an urgent intervention for post-pandemic society, written with expertise and clarity. Warning: it will cause irritation to powerful interests who fear us all becoming better informed about the root causes of so much human suffering. * Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, former Director of Liberty *James Davies is one of the most important voices on mental health in the world. This is a beautiful and deeply sane book. Everyone who's suffering - and wants to know how to make it stop - should read it right away. * Johann Hari, author of Lost Connections *An intelligent and powerfully argued book... a rich seam of empathy runs through Davies's narrative. * The Herald *Essential and Enlightening... Davies shows how we can re-connect our personal troubles to our political contexts, and in doing so, find better ways forward * Lucy Johnstone, consultant clinical psychologist *In this game-changing polemic, James Davies leaves us in no doubt: to tackle the mental health crisis we need major social and economic reform. * Nathan Filer, author of This Book will Change Your Mind about Mental Health *A marvellous book. Critics of traditional psychiatry will relish its clear-sighted exposure of a failing system. Defenders of traditional psychiatry may well be infuriated. But everyone should read it. * Peter Kinderman, professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Liverpool *An excellent entry-point... this book is written clearly and concisely, without being patronising or watering anything down. Such a welcome departure from what I've come to expect from the genre means that Sedated will be able to reach and be read by those who need it most: all of us. * British Journal of Sports Medicine *Table of Contents1: An Economic Prelude 2: The New Culture of Proliferating Debt and Drugs 3: The New Dissatisfactions of Modern Work 4: The New Back-to-Work Psychological Therapies 5: The New Causes of Unemployment 6: Education and the Rise of New Managerialism 7: Deregulating the So-Called Chemical Cure 8: Materialism No More 9: Dehumanising Productivity 10: You Only Have Yourself to Blame 11: The Social Determinants of Distress 12: Conclusion

  • The Origin of the Virus: The hidden truths behind

Clinical Press Ltd The Origin of the Virus: The hidden truths behind

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGround-breaking, evidence-based book asks how many lives were lost because of Chinas negligence about lab-leaked SARS-CoV-2. In a disturbing reconstruction of events by two of the most reputable scientists in the world, a new book reveals for the first time how Chinese authorities and elite Wuhan scientists knew about SARS-CoV-2s menacing biological features from the start but remain silent to this day. In The Origin of the Virus (Clinical Press) Dr Steven Quay and Prof Angus Dalgleish, working with Italian reporter Paolo Barnard, show how China engaged in lies, omissions and obfuscations to cover up the laboratory origin of the virus. Had they immediately alerted the international community and policymakers of the extremely pathogenic molecular machinery present in SARS-CoV-2's genome, very large numbers of lives may have been spared, argue Quay, Dalgleish and Barnard. The authors provide a shocking account of the extreme experiments that led to the outbreak of the worst pandemic since the 1918 Spanish influenza. They broaden the censure to explain why some American and British scientists thwarted a proper investigation of the origin of COVID-19. Despite its impeccable scientific grounding the book is both a readable and gripping account that, for the first time, allows the public to partake in what lies at the heart of the many scandals surrounding the birth of the most deadly virus in modern times.Trade ReviewThe beauty of this book lies in its totally convincing narrative in a concise and entirely readable form. As a lay person with regard to medical matters I found the introductory chapter by the man who put the project together, Paolo Barnard, both fascinating and compelling, reading like a particularly enthralling story. Then the science kicks in with some hard academic research from Professor Dalgleish examining the genome of the virus and the peculiar nature of the spike proteins put there by Gain of Function studies of concern. Although impeccable in its reasoning the matters were explained in terms that are fully understandable. Then follows a nice cheeky chapter from doctor/scientist Steven Quay at the end of the book which lays out in a wonderfully logical manner how a bookie might view the odds of either zoonosis or lab-leak as the origin of the virus causing the Covid-19 pandemic .... an analysis supported by something called Bayesian statistics. I have read other books on the same matter but in my opinion this is the best .... the rival tomes are too large, filled out by journalese or just plain wrong. Once you realise that the virus has been made in a unique way such that it can attack almost any cell in the human body you begin to understand the importance of preventative measures and also become angry that the dangerous Gain of Function studies are continuing and worried that unless they are stopped the next pandemic of a novel virus will be even worse. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisNow in a significantly revised third edition featuring 60% new material, this is the authoritative clinical reference and course text on a crucial psychotherapy skill. Leading practitioners of major psychotherapies describe step by step how to construct sound case formulations and use them to guide individualized treatment. Following a standard format, chapters cover the historical background of each case formulation approach, its conceptual framework and evidence base, multicultural considerations, steps in implementation, application to treatment planning and practice, and training resources. Rich case material includes examples of completed formulations. New to This Edition *Chapters on additional models: mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, couple therapy, and thematic mapping. *Chapters on specific approaches for personality disorders, suicidality, and panic disorder. *Expanded case examples now go beyond crafting thTrade Review"Any practicing clinician knows that there is more to conducting therapy than following a manual. Yet the growing availability of treatment manuals over the past several decades has led many training programs to pay relatively less attention to individualized case formulation. Fortunately, Eells and his contributors recognize the crucial importance of case formulation in planning personalized interventions for transdiagnostic problems. The third edition of this book continues to provide a notable contribution to the field with its detailed account of how case formulation may add to the effectiveness of therapeutic intervention."--Marvin R. Goldfried, PhD, Distinguished Professor, Department of Psychology, Stony Brook University "Case formulation allows therapists to know when and how to use their clinical skills and how to evaluate whether clients have benefited. The up-to-date third edition of this excellent resource helps practitioners from all different orientations learn how to construct and use case formulations. Doctoral students and experienced clinicians alike should read this book so they can respond more effectively to the needs of their clients. It is user friendly and easy to read."--Clara E. Hill, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Maryland, College Park “Case formulation is the invisible force that guides psychotherapy--without a sound formulation, treatment is likely to be unfocused and of limited benefit. Developing a case formulation and using it to guide treatment is a skill needed by all psychotherapists, regardless of their theoretical orientation or psychotherapy style. In the third edition of this comprehensive handbook, Eells brings together other leaders in the field to approach case formulation from an array of perspectives, resulting in an effective integration of theory, evidence, and clinical practice.”--Bruce E. Wampold, PhD, ABPP, Department of Counseling Psychology (Emeritus), University of Wisconsin–Madison “This handbook is built on the cornerstones of evidence-based practice: theory, practice wisdom, the person of the client, and research. Each chapter lays out ways that clinicians can methodically engage clients while building hypotheses for treatment planning. Students and practicing clinicians can improve their practice processes and outcomes after reading this vital practice text."--Jemel P. • Cambridge University Press Stahls Essential Psychopharmacology

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLong established as the preeminent source in its field, the eagerly anticipated fifth edition of Dr Stahl''s essential textbook of psychopharmacology is here! With its use of icons and figures that form Dr Stahl''s unique ''visual language'', the book is the single most readable source of information on disease and drug mechanisms for all students and mental health professionals seeking to understand and utilize current therapeutics, and to anticipate the future for novel medications. Every aspect of the book has been updated, with the clarity of explanation that only Dr Stahl can bring. The new edition includes over 500 new or refreshed figures, an intuitive color scheme, fourteen new uses for older drugs and eighteen brand new drugs, coverage of Parkinson''s Disease Psychosis, behavioural symptoms of dementia, and mixed features in major depressive episodes, and expanded information on the medical uses of cannabis and hallucinogen assisted psychotherapy.Trade Review'The opportunity to review and comment on Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology, 5th edition, is truly a pleasure. The depth and comprehension of this edition reads like a fresh view of everything we would want to know in the area of psychopharmacology, including the integration of basic and clinical neuroscience information. The clarity as a teaching tool for any level of education and sophistication is remarkable, just as is the ease of reading and enjoying the unique set of figures and tables. The book represents a departure from the usual fare that we are offered as we delve into the mysteries of our body. In short, this 5th edition is not a simple reworking of earlier editions but really a brand new view. It represents a model for the way that we should cover other areas of neuroscience.' Ellen Frank, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine'Can you improve on a classic psychopharmacology textbook? Yes! Updated, restyled, and with enhanced illustrations, this 5th edition of Stephen Stahl's 'must have' text is comprehensive, readable, and beautifully presented.' David Castle, M.D., FRANZCP, FRCPsych, Scientific Director, Centre for Complex Interventions, Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, Toronto, Canada; and Professor, University of Toronto'This new edition of a classical textbook is superb. Unlike most other volumes on psychopharmacology, it is organized around biological mechanisms, and uses that framework to review the latest research. Another unique feature is its use of wonderfully reader-friendly illustrations, bringing to life many pathways that would otherwise be difficult for the non-specialist to understand.' Joel Paris, M.D., Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry, McGill University and Author of Nature and Nurture in Mental Disorders: A Gene-Environment Model'Psychopharmacology has always benefitted from a virtuous cycle of science informing clinical practice and clinical questions driving the science, an approach now often called 'Translational Medicine'. However, this approach does present challenges for those who wish to learn about or keep up with such a diverse, rich, and rapidly evolving knowledge base. Essential Psychopharmacology admirably meets these needs covering all relevant fields of Psychopharmacology in an expertly informed and accessible way. Previous editions have established Essential Psychopharmacology as a vital introductory and reference text for the students and practitioners of psychopharmacology and for all scientists with an interest in the field. The latest edition follows its predecessors and will undoubtedly be a vital resource for all those interested in this fascinating discipline.' Allan Young, Chair of Mood Disorders, Director of the Centre for Affective Disorders, Department of Psychological Medicine, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London'This book is a must for anyone who would like to dive into psychotropics and get a state-of-the-art knowledge in a clear, elegant, and accessible platform. Professor Stahl has managed to provide simple, yet accurate, cutting-edge concepts using creative and innovative graphics and design. In this regard, it's presenting the perfect marriage of contemporary neuroscience knowledge with outstanding accessibility. I found this book extremely useful for well-informed clinicians as well as colleagues who are starting to practice psychiatry and recommend it as an essential addition for all mental health professionals as well as for general practitioners with interest in psychiatry.' Joseph Zohar, Director of Psychiatry and the Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Clinic at the Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer, Israel and Professor of Psychiatry at Tel Aviv University, Israel'Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology is without a doubt the leading textbook on the neuroscientific basis of psychopharmacology. This 5th edition is extensively revised and updated to incorporate the latest advances in neuroscience relevant to psychopharmacology. Dr. Stahl has distilled the latest advances in neuroscience to fully revamp this edition. Dr. Stahl's talent is to make complex ideas deceptively easy to grasp. This is no small feat. He does it with pithy explanations, clear diagrams, and memorable analogies. There are many textbooks in the field, but this stands out in the clarity of explanation and cutting-edge neuroscience. True to its name, it is essential reading for psychiatrists, primary care physicians, students, and other professionals treating patients with mental illnesses. It will also be useful for trainees and neuroscientists. In short, Dr. Stahl does it again!' Oliver Howes, MRCPsych, Ph.D., DM, Professor of Molecular Psychiatry, King's College London and Imperial College London'Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology has lived up to its name as 'essential' reading for generations of psychiatrists and other professionals involved in the prescription of psychotropic medication at various levels of skill. The current edition is even more remarkable than its predecessors for its ability to provide useful and indeed essential information at multiple levels of expertise. It is remarkable that something as readable and as approachable at a very basic level can still be incredibly informative to even the most experienced and expert psychopharmacologists. This edition has done what I thought would be impossible in significantly improving on past editions and in producing something that is even more readable and informative to people with a vast range of experience.' Richard J. Porter, Professor of Psychiatry, Head of the Department Psychological Medicine and Director of the Mental Health Clinical Research Unit, University of Otago'Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology, 5th edition, is truly the preeminent textbook on the pharmacology of psychotropic drugs. It is comprehensive but very readable to both students and practitioners alike. Dr. Stahl is not only an excellent scientist but also a superb educator, providing a deep understanding of both disease states and drug mechanisms. His unique combination of visual and verbal material makes even the most complex topics approachable. This 5th edition has been extensively revised with hundreds of new or revised figures, information on 18 new medications, and dozens of other additions or changes. Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology will remain the only pharmacology textbook I recommend to my trainees.' Richard C. Shelton, Charles Byron Ireland Professor, Director, UAB Depression and Suicide Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavior Neurobiology, Director of Research, UAB Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, School of Medicine, The University of Alabama at Birmingham'Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology is a classic in the field, which is unique in providing not only excellent teaching about mechanisms of drug action through the use of attractive and innovative icons but also a sense of the actual clinical experience of tailoring therapeutic drug choices to psychiatric symptom profiles.' Trevor W. Robbins, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Cambridge'Steve Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology is a classic, used by clinicians, students, and researchers throughout the world. For clinicians it's practical, for students it's clear, and for researchers it's innovative. Stahl is an experienced clinician, and his text is filled with useful pearls. Stahl is an expert on the principles of medical education; these inform the text and figures, and contribute to their extraordinary impact. Finally, Stahl is a creative researcher, and his framework for thinking about psychiatric medications provides the field with an innovative approach. The 5th edition of the volume is timely, given ongoing work in the field, and has been thoroughly updated to reflect recent advances.' Dan Stein, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town'Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology, 5th edition, is a masterpiece of impeccable scholarship and the art of education. Signature to Dr. Stahl is this book's tremendous expanse of knowledge that provides not only the science but also clarity in understanding complex concepts of psychiatric psychopharmacology. Dr. Stahl has demonstrated yet again that he is the 'people's educator.'' Roger S. McIntyre, M.D., FRCPC, Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology, University of Toronto, Canada Head, Mood Disorders Psychopharmacology Unit and Chairman and Executive Director, Brain and Cognition Discovery Foundation (BCDF), Toronto, Canada'Since its inception, Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology has been a real treasure for those learning and teaching psychopharmacology and the neuroscience of mental disorders. As a clinician and medical teacher I have used and warmly recommended each of the four earlier editions. However, this new 5th edition is the best yet and resets the bar again for textbooks in this field. It has been extensively revised and brought completely up-to-date throughout and covers the entire field comprehensively while retaining the clarity and ease of learning it is famous for. It has been impressively updated with a new color scheme and a wealth of new figures and captions, so that the book is not only comprehensive and right up-to-date but is also a real pleasure to read and learn from.' Peter S. Talbot, M.D., FRCPsych, Consultant Psychiatrist & Honorary Senior Lecturer, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and University of Manchester'The truth is that this book has a secret: it is obviously a book on pharmacology, but it hides a second one, a book on neuroscience-based psychopathology. Going back from the receptors to the psychopathological dimensions of the disorders Stahl has his own personal style, starting with his use of the 'incipit': here he makes it clear what he is going to explain to you, and where you have to focus your attention. Concentrate! Then Steve Stahl gives you picture of the determined domain: this time animated in sequences to make you figure concretely the matter of psychopharmacology. At the end, just to make sure that you really grasped the concepts, he repeats everything in a convenient summary, which is very useful to consolidate the knowledge.' Book SynopsisIn the dark years of apartheid, a boy grew up in a household with a terrible secret: although they were all of mixed origins, they had managed to `pass as white’. Young Winston Wicomb, however, was far too dark to fit in, and had to be hidden whenever someone knocked on their door. After struggling through school and even managing to obtain an university degree, he still remained unemployed due to his skin colour. To make ends meet, he serviced cars in their backyard, but never stopped dreaming about escaping the restraints of Apartheid. Then fate intervened. While distributing pamphlets advertising his mechanical skills, he found Professor Chris Barnard stranded next to the road. He offered to help even though he had no experience with the new Mercedes the professor drove. Barnard, surprised at the success of Winston’s efforts and impulsive as ever, offered Winston a job in his research lab. It is here that Winston applied his knowledge and experience of matters mechanical to eventually produce the world’s first apparatus to transport a living heart over long distances. `Vital Remains’ tells to story of an unlikely hero, a huge risk, achievement … and love.
