Book SynopsisThe story of the search for p53--the most important gene in medicine. All of us have lurking in our DNA a most remarkable gene: it is known simply as p53 and its job is to protect us from cancer. p53: The Gene that Cracked the Cancer Code tells the story of the discovery of the gene and of medical science''s mission to unravel its mysteries and get to the heart of what happens in our cells when they turn cancerous. When all is well, this gene constantly scans our cells to ensure that when they grow and divide as part of the routine maintenance of our bodies, they do so without mishap. If a cell makes a mistake in copying its DNA during the process of division, p53 stops it in its tracks, sending in the repair team before allowing the cell to carry on dividing. Cancer cannot develop unless p53 itself is damaged or handicapped by some other fault in the system. Not surprisingly, p53 is the most studied single gene in history. • How the Immune System Works

John Wiley and Sons Ltd How the Immune System Works

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisTable of ContentsAcknowledgments viii How to Use This Book ix This book is neither a comprehensive text nor an exam-review tool. It is an overview of the immune system, designed to give anyone who is learning immunology a feel for how the system fits together. About the Companion Website x Lecture 1 An Overview 1 The immune system is a “team effort,” involving many different players who work together to provide a powerful defense against invaders. Focusing on one player at a time makes it hard to understand the game. Here we view the action from the grandstand to get a wide-angle picture of what the immune system is all about. Lecture 2 The Innate Immune System 12 The innate immune system is a “hard-wired” defense that has evolved over millions of years to recognize pathogens that commonly infect humans. It provides a rapid and powerful response against “everyday” invaders. Lecture 3 B Cells and Antibodies 26 B cells and the antibodies they produce are part of the adaptive immune system – a system that protects us against pathogens both common and rare. Lecture 4 The Magic of Antigen Presentation 40 T cells, another weapon of the adaptive immune system, only recognize invaders that are properly presented by specialized antigen presenting cells. This feature keeps T cells focused on the types of attackers they can defend against. Lecture 5 T Cell Activation 52 Before they can spring into action, T cells must be activated. This requirement helps insure that only useful weapons will be mobilized. Lecture 6 T Cells at Work 60 Once they have been activated, helper T cells orchestrate the immune response, and killer T cells destroy infected cells. Lecture 7 Secondary Lymphoid Organs and Lymphocyte Trafficking 69 B and T lymphocytes travel through secondary lymphoid organs looking for the intruders they can defend against. Once activated in the secondary lymphoid organs, B and T cells are dispatched to the particular areas of the body where they can be most useful. Lecture 8 Restraining the Immune System 82 The powerful weapons of the immune system must be restrained lest they become overly exuberant. In addition, once an invader has been defeated, the immune system must be “reset” to prepare for future attacks. Lecture 9 Self Tolerance and MHC Restriction 86 T cells must be “tested” to be sure they focus on appropriately presented antigens, and B and T lymphocytes must be screened to eliminate those which might attack our own bodies. Lecture 10 Immunological Memory 97 The innate immune system remembers pathogens which have been attacking humans for millions of years. In contrast, B and T cells remember pathogens we have encountered during our lifetime. Memory B and T lymphocytes respond more quickly and effectively to a subsequent attack by the same invader. Lecture 11 The Intestinal Immune System 103 The human intestines are home to trillions of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. How the immune system deals with these potentially dangerous intestinal residents, which frequently invade the tissues surrounding the intestines, is a hot topic in immunology. Lecture 12 The Immune System Gone Wrong 110 The immune system usually does a good job of defending us. Sometimes, however, mistakes are made. Two examples of the “immune system gone wrong” are allergies and autoimmunity. Lecture 13 Immunodeficiency 119 Serious disease may result when our immune system does not operate at full strength. Humans who are infected with HIV-1 have profoundly impaired immune systems. Lecture 14 Vaccines 125 Vaccines safely mimic a microbial attack so that our immune system will be primed and ready for a future challenge by the same pathogen. Lecture 15 Cancer and the Immune System 132 The human immune system is not very good at defending us against cancer. Indeed, there is a built-in conflict between the need to minimize the chance that its weapons will attack our own bodies and the need to destroy cancer cells. Lecture 16 Immunotherapy 139 Physicians are “borrowing” some of the weapons of the immune system and using them to treat disease. Lecture 17 COVID-19 and the Immune System 146 The COVID-19 pandemic has given immunologists a “laboratory” to study the immune response to respiratory viral infections. The COVID-19 vaccine program has resulted in major advances in vaccine design, including the mRNA vaccine platform. Glossary 154 Here are definitions of some of the terms that immunologists use – but which “normal” people wouldn’t. Acronyms and Abbreviations 158 Immunologists are big on acronyms and abbreviations, but they can drive you crazy. So I’ve made a list to which you can refer. Index 159

Book SynopsisThe 5th and final volume in a masterwork for students of herbalism and practicing herbalists Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals is a five-volume set that serves as a comprehensive, practical reference manual for herbalists, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Dr. Jill Stansbury draws on her decades of clinical experience and her extensive research to provide an unparalleled range of herbal formulas. Organized by body system, each volume includes hundreds of formulas to treat common health conditions, as well as formulas that address specific energetic or symptomatic presentations. For each formula, Dr. Stansbury briefly explains how the selected herbs address the specific condition. Sidebars and user-friendly lists help readers quickly choose which herbs are best for specific presentations and detail traditional uses of both Western and traditional Asian formulas and herbs that are readily available in the United States. Volume 5 focuses on autoimmune and allergic conditions including allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, hives, and food sensitivities. A chapter on ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and throat includes herbal therapies for eye infections, glaucoma, and other eye conditions; sinus infections, colds, and sore throats; and tooth decay and oral infections. A chapter on the musculoskeletal system covers common conditions such as sore muscles and bruising as well as chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and osteoporosis. Each chapter includes a materia medica section that describes individual herbs with tips on their properties, modes of action, and the specific symptoms each plant best addresses. These formularies are also a tutorial for budding herbalists on the sophisticated art of fine-tuning an herbal formula for the constitution and overall health condition of an individual patient, rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all treatment for a basic diagnosis. The text aims to teach by example, helping clinicians develop their own intuition and ability to create effective herbal formulas. Previous volumes include Digestion and Elimination (Volume 1), Circulation and Respiration (Volume 2), Endocrinology (Volume 3), and Neurology, Psychiatry, and Pain Management (Volume 4).Trade Review“Jill Stansbury’s Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals reflect not only the maturity of contemporary biomedical herbal medicine but also the mastery gained from years of clinical practice. Throughout the text, a thoughtful integration of traditional context is blended with science-principled herbalism. This therapeutic guide allows the clinician and patient to experience the best of what medical herbalism has to offer in a way that is relevant to healthcare today. If you practice herbal medicine, or want to dive in deeply with a master in the field, these books will be in a prized place on your shelves.”—Bevin Clare, professor, Maryland University of Integrative Health; president, American Herbalists Guild“Over the five volumes of Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Jill Stansbury has shown us what a remarkable practitioner she is, presenting nuanced therapeutic protocols for a wide array of conditions that exemplify cutting edge medical knowledge and are firmly rooted in a deep understanding of plants and traditional herbalism. Amazingly, all of this is done in a highly accessible manner that conveys the personal knowledge that Jill has gained over decades of practice. There is, quite frankly, nothing else like it, and no one else like Jill.”—jim mcdonald, herbalist and founder, herbcraft.org“There are many herb books, but few address the fine points of clinical herbal prescribing. To remedy this deficiency, Dr. Jill Stansbury, ND, has written perhaps the best herbal formulary since the days of the renowned Eclectic physicians. . . . Each section and page clearly shows the skill, experience, and expertise of the author and will help even the seasoned naturopathic physician or herbalist improve their clinical practice and success in treating their patients.”—David Winston, RH (AHG), dean, David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies; founder, Herbal Therapeutics Research Library“Fabulous! This book is an outstanding resource. Dr. Jill Stansbury, one of the most respected herbalists and naturopathic doctors of our time, has created an up-to-date formulary that combines the best of traditional formulas with modern research and her own extensive clinical experience.”—Rosemary Gladstar, herbalist; founder, Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals is a gift to all healthcare practitioners seeking to heal their patients through a natural medicine approach. The expertise of Dr. Stansbury is extraordinary. This text is not a simple guide; it is a fascinating educational read and treatment formulary that is practical and evidence-based.”—Mimi Guarneri, MD, president, Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals is an essential reference set for all practitioners who use, or aspire to use, botanical medicine. The coverage is comprehensive, from the first volume on digestion and elimination through to this ultimate volume on immune, EENT, and musculoskeletal conditions. I appreciate as well the book’s opening chapter on the art of formulation, which provides an excellent description of how to best address the precise presentation of a patient, rather than a general diagnosis or condition. Thank you Dr. Stansbury for providing this much needed reference!”—Linnea Wardwell, cofounder, Herbal Educational Services, BotanicalMedicine.org“Accomplished naturopathic physician Dr. Jill Stansbury brings her vast clinical experience, deep knowledge, commitment, and passion for herbs to this exciting modern-day formulary. There is no other formulary as comprehensive or as accessible to the clinician; this book truly fills an empty space in the list of current herbal clinical education publications.”—Dr. Mary Bove, ND, author of Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants“Jill Stansbury is a quintessential medicine woman in today’s world. Her rich experience as a clinician and professor of naturopathic medicine is palpable, and she writes with a compassionate knowing that the mental health field so keenly deserves. She grounds this formulary through her deep respect and dedication to indigenous wisdom that she has experienced and supported through her work in the Peruvian Amazon as well as with other wisdom keepers. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals are the texts my clinic students have been waiting for.”—Kat Maier, author of Energetic Herbalism, director, Sacred Plant Traditions“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume I is simply the best text available for the modern clinical practice of Western herbal medicine. It’s likely to become an instant classic and essential book for any student of herbal medicine, as well as seasoned practitioners.”—Christopher Hobbs, PhD, LAc, fourth-generation herbalist“Esteemed clinical herbalist and naturopathic physician Jill Stansbury shares thirty years of experience with botanical medicines from all over the globe in this incredibly helpful text, which is part guidebook, part materia medica, and part recipe-based formulary, laced with an enthusiastic appreciation of all things herbal. It will no doubt be a frequently referenced text in the library of any herbal practitioner.”—Timothy Miller, ND, MAc, LAc, RA; founder, Naturopathic CE“Dr. Stansbury is a prescient, loving steward of the Standing Green Nation. Deeply loved by herbalists globally, her mentoring and clinical mastery powerfully manifest in this set of formularies. It is at once classic, complete, and enduring, offering herbal medicine savvy and deep research through articulate narratives and formulations for many conditions. The volumes themselves are beautiful objects whose rich content and elegant design are exemplary and respectful of this hard-earned, cumulative wisdom.”—David J. Schleich, PhD, president emeritus, National University of Natural Medicine“Dr. Jill Stansbury’s Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals is a formidable accomplishment and historic contribution to the rapidly developing field of botanical medicine. Herbal Formularies is practical and immediately usable for anyone interested in the applications of herbal medicine. Its depth will satisfy senior clinicians, academic researchers, and medical educators, while its accessibility will greatly further the education of students and the serious lay person.”—David Crow, LAc, founder, Floracopeia Aromatic Treasures“Reading Dr. Stansbury’s formulary has quickly supported us in updating and filling in gaps in our dispensary stock to better serve our customers. I believe this book will similarly inform the dispensing practices of practitioners of all experience levels. Previous efforts have been predominately geared toward licensed acupuncturists or naturopathic physicians, but these volumes will speak to a broader, dynamic audience. This book offers mature templates for improvisation to treat a myriad of complex health conditions with botanical medicines.”—Benjamin Zappin, LAc, herbalist; cofounder, Five Flavors Herbs“Formulation is one of the key elements of a clinical herbalist’s practice. It is also an aspect that intimidates many practitioners, especially those newer to herbal medicine. Jill Stansbury’s book is a valuable guide to formulation that will lend a strong guiding hand for herbalists of all skill levels. Her language is clear, instructive, and easy to read. She gives multiple examples drawn from her extensive practice, and her explanations offer direction for working with individual patients.”—7Song, director, Northeast School of Botanical Medicine; director, Holistic Medicine, Ithaca Free Clinic

  • The Jewish Annotated New Testament

Oxford University Press Inc The Jewish Annotated New Testament

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst published in 2011, The Jewish Annotated New Testament was a groundbreaking work, bringing the New Testament''s Jewish background to the attention of students, clergy, and general readers. In this new edition, eighty Jewish scholars bring together unparalleled scholarship to shed new light on the text. This thoroughly revised and greatly expanded second edition brings even more helpful information and new insights to the study of the New Testament. Introductions to each New Testament book, containing guidance for reading and specific information about how the book relates to the Judaism of the period, have been revised and augmented, and in some cases newly written. Annotations on the text--some revised, some new to this edition--provide verse-by-verse commentary. The thirty essays from the first edition are thoroughly updated, and there are twenty-four new essays, on topics such as Mary in Jewish Tradition,, Christology, and Messianic Judaism. For Christian readers The Jewish Annotated New Testament offers a window into the first-century world of Judaism from which the New Testament springs. There are explanations of Jewish concepts such as food laws and rabbinic argumentation. It also provides a much-needed corrective to many centuries of Christian misunderstandings of the Jewish religion. For Jewish readers, this volume provides the chance to encounter the New Testament--a text of vast importance in Western European and American culture--with no religious agenda and with guidance from Jewish experts in theology, history, and Jewish and Christian thought. It also explains Christian practices, such as the Eucharist. The Jewish Annotated New Testament, Second Edition is an essential volume that places the New Testament writings in a context that will enlighten readers of any faith or none.Trade ReviewThis annotated version of their New Testament forces Christian readers to rethink some of their perceptions about New Testament texts, together with their presuppositions and prejudices. All those who teach the New Testament and who preach from its pages would do well to ponder Amy-Jill Levine's survey, Bearing False Witness: Common Errors Made about Early Judaism. * Christoph Stenschke, Neotestamentica *Any reader who wishes to study the text of the New Testament from a scholarly perspective will find plenty of engaging, illuminating readings guaranteed to make it worth their while...Highly recommended. * Jenny Webb, Association for Mormon Letters *Praise for the first edition: "A magnificent achievement... The Jewish Annotated New Testament is a marvelously bounteous compilation." * Commonweal *An admirable piece of scholarship... Much contemporary writing on Scripture is faddish or tendentious. This book is a disciplined work of clarification and illumination. * Marilynne Robinson, Wall Street Journal *Table of ContentsThe New Testament Gospels and Acts - Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Zvi Brettler The Gospel According to Matthew - Introduction and Annotations by Aaron M. • The Nature of Fear

Harvard University Press The Nature of Fear

Book SynopsisAnimal behavior expert Daniel T. Blumstein delves into the evolutionary origins and diverse ecological contexts of fear. Fear protects organisms from threats, but at a cost in health and productivity. The various species manage these costs differently, providing lessons for humans as we seek to benefit from fear without succumbing to panic.Trade ReviewClearly, The Nature of Fear is a book for this moment. Dread is all around, manifold and constant during the coronavirus pandemic, of course. But a particular theme of our escalating anxieties comes to the fore with Blumstein’s book in hand: the fear of belonging to nature…As the pandemic brings into focus our biological fragility, the time seems apt to examine the nature of human fear through the lens of, well, nature. * The Atlantic *A revelatory and masterful work by the world’s authority on fear in animal societies. Blumstein focuses the lenses of animal behavior and evolution on very human anxieties and fears. The result is a beautifully written book rich in crucial insights, with salience for scientists, students, policy makers, and every human being navigating their way through our sometimes frightening world. -- Barbara Natterson-Horowitz, coauthor of Wildhood and ZoobiquityBlumstein has studied fear in the animal kingdom for more than 30 years. In this highly readable book, he explains how related insights can help us do everything from composing scary music to managing biodiversity and imposing effective public health measures…Embrace your fears, and give it a read! * BBC Wildlife *The Nature of Fear’s main province is the fluttering pulse-rates of the broader animal kingdom, and that makes for mind-changing reading. -- Steve Donoghue * Open Letters Review *This terrific book is a reminder that when we are afraid, we are not alone. Lizards have fear. Mice have fear. Marmots have fear. This feeling is ancient, and for many millions of years, it has guided animals’ actions. If you want to understand the roots of fear, and also make more sense of your own life, read this book. -- Rob Dunn, author of Never Home AloneBlumstein shows us how fear can be a positive force. When equipped with the knowledge of fear’s origin, we have a blueprint for conquering it. Informed by animals and evolution, The Nature of Fear is a biological thriller that everyone needs to read. -- Brian Hare, coauthor of The Genius of DogsIn this lively and informative book, Blumstein takes the study of fear from the laboratory into the wild to emphasize the costs and benefits of fear responses and their evolution. This novel approach has much to offer as we try to understand the origin of our own fears. -- Guy Beauchamp, author of Animal Vigilance: Monitoring Predators and CompetitorsIn this fascinating book, Daniel Blumstein explores the causes and consequences of fear for human and nonhuman animals, providing important insights into the ways that we all recognize and cope with risks in the course of our daily lives. -- Tim Clutton-Brock, author of Mammal SocietiesThe feature making this project most compelling is the thesis that fear can be chronic, inappropriate, and very costly…An enjoyable book. -- James Chadwick Johnson * Quarterly Review of Biology *In this slim but packed book, Daniel Blumstein explores many facets of an emotion all animals feel: fear in all its different faces, broadening the discussion in ways that will challenge readers to re-examine the values of a trauma nobody likes. -- Steve Donoghue * Open Letters Review *

Book SynopsisSince Mondors times in the forties of the last century there was no other book in surgery to be written so easy and witty Boris D. Savchuk, World Journal of Surgery This, the fifth edition of Scheins Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery, builds on the reputation of the four previous editions. Already a worldwide benchmark, translated into half a dozen languages, this book guides surgeons logically through the minefields of assessment and management of acute surgical abdominal conditions. Tyro and experienced surgeons alike will benefit from the distilled wisdom contained in these pages. The direct, no-nonsense style gives clear guidance while at the same time providing amusing (or saddening) insights into our collective surgical psyche. Old chapters were revised or rewritten and new chapters have been added, including a completely new colorectal section with its new co-editor. Finally, in an attempt to rejuvenate the book, Danny took over the helm while the aging Moshe was pushed down the line Selected reviews and comments from readers of the previous edition What to say, perhaps the most appropriate medical book ever written. This is written with short punchy chapters making it a very difficult book to put down. By the end I was a total enthusiast this is a text like no other I read Unreservedly recommended to old and young alike. A Must Have Book. I am about to end my chief year in general surgery residency my copy of the first edition shows the wear of half a dozen total read throughs and probably hundreds of referencings... Simply perfect. The best choice in surgery for trainees! It makes the more difficult surgery areas very easy to understand. I recommend it to all surgeons. One of the best books I have read in my life! Must read for all docs out there. But the moral of the book is that if scientific rigorousness (protocols, guidelines, evidence-based) and common sense are at odds, follow common sense.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Ratgeber Polyneuropathie und Restless Legs: Leben

(Dorit Zimmerman, in: Homöopathie Zeitschrift, Heft 4, 2022)Table of Contents
