  • Assessment in Music Education Oxford Music

Oxford University Press Assessment in Music Education Oxford Music

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAssessment in schools has become a hotly debated issue in education. In the wake of political pressures for accountability, educators have sought to defend the principle that assessment should serve the interests of learners and learning. With the aim of improving learning and raising standards, this book presents a case for formative assessment, day-by-day, rather than summative assessment at the end of key stages. The author draws on and discusses the practical application of a range of theoretical and philosophical research, encouraging a holistic approach and focused teacher-intervention. The book provides material for reflection as well as practical tips, and is suitable for instrumental and classroom teachers (at all levels, but particularly 11-18), and the academic community.Trade ReviewEven before I picked this book up, I knew it was going to be a good one . . . Fautley makes it come alive. It is not just the quality of the writing and the humour. He shows us why it matters and what a difference good assessment can make to young people - and that I find interesting . . . What is so good about this book is that Fautley not only outlines the problems but also suggests solutions . . . Throughout this clearly written, highly readable book two central areas of concern emerge. One is that the most important role for assessment is to help students 'get better' at music. The other is that any practical solutions offered have to fit in with the reality of a workforce which is currently working at full stretch. It is these two priorities that make this book so important. If God hadn't wanted us to sort out assessment in music education, he wouldn't have given us Martin Fautley. * David Ashworth, www.teachingmusic.org.uk, May 2010 *Assessment in Music Education provides a very welcome 'bible' for understanding every aspect of assessment in music education . . . In general the writing style is accessible - a real achievement with such a multi-faceted and complex topic. In the more theoretical sections, Fautley makes a real effort to simplify concepts to communicate them effectively to his readers . . . Assessment in Music Education is a well-referenced compendium of information on all aspects of the topic. Whether or not the present government decides to continue the current emphasis on assessment in the cloassroom, this will remain a standard work in the field. * Bette Gray-Fow, Classroom Music, Autumn 2010 *Fautley has a genius for the visual model when summing up the discourse of assessment . . . Not the formulaic version of formative assessment which often permeates UK schooling, but that which is based upon a rich dialogue between pupils and teachers . . . Music education has been in need of a serious treatise on assessment for some time now, and this accessible and rigorous book fits the bill. After reading it no music educator has an excuse for not engaging with effective assessment practice or not having strategies that go beyond learning objectives, levelling and setting targets. Here Fautley draws out a myriad of possibilities from simple ideas supported with a sound theoretical underpinning. This book will be important to teachers of all types in all contexts as well as teacher educators, policymakers, academics, head teachers and those providing continuing professional development. Look forward to the next volume! * Chris Philpott, Music Education Research, August 2012 *Assessment in Music Education provides a detailed but very readable exploration of the theory and practice of assessment in the classroom, largely at Key Stage 3 . . . It is the most thoughtful exposition I know of teaching and learning in the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum, even if its conclusion is that, 'At present, it is not entirely clear what progression in music learning entails'. * James Garnett, Music Teacher magazine, May 2010 *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisFor decades we've been studying, experimenting with, and wrangling over different approaches to improving public education, and there's still little consensus on what works, and what to do. The one thing people seem to agree on, however, is that schools need to be held accountable--we need to know whether what they're doing is actually working. But what does that mean in practice? High-stakes tests. Lots of them. And that has become a major problem. Daniel Koretz, one of the nation's foremost experts on educational testing, argues in The Testing Charade that the whole idea of test-based accountability has failed--it has increasingly become an end in itself, harming students and corrupting the very ideals of teaching. In this powerful polemic, built on unimpeachable evidence and rooted in decades of experience with educational testing, Koretz calls out high-stakes testing as a sham, a false idol that is ripe for manipulation and shows little evidence of leading to educational improvemeTrade Review"In his new book, Daniel Koretz, an eminent testing expert at Harvard University, has skillfully dissected the multiple negative consequences of the education reforms of the 2000s."--Diane Ravitch "New Republic " "A stunningly good, meticulously researched perspective."--Nancy Flanagan "Ed Week, Best of the Year " Praise for Daniel Koretz's Measuring Up "The best explanation of standardized testing." --Diane Ravitch, New York Review of Books "Dan Koretz, a distinguished academic, turns out to be a wonderful storyteller and a gifted writer as well. Combining the latest data and moving stories of people caught up in the accountability frenzy, Koretz demonstrates that high-stakes testing has corrupted instruction, led educators to cut corners and even cheat, and produced sham increases in scores, while yielding precious little in the way of real improvements in student learning. The Testing Charade is accessible, riveting, and spot-on. Please put this important book on your must read list."--John Merrow, author of Addicted to Reform "A scathing critique. . . . What is significant about this book is the thorough and relentless critique by a testing expert who carefully and sometimes technically dissects the evidence."--National Education Policy Center "Written in an authoritative but conversational tone that smoothly communicates both educational theory and real-world examples, The Testing Charade offers a trenchant look at one of our societal pillars."--Civil Engineering "A vivid and disturbing account of pervasive design problems in test-driven accountability systems, pernicious effects of high-stakes testing, and the extremes to which accountability testing has taken us. . . . In addition to being highly readable, engaging, and accessible to a broad, nontechnical audience, The TestingCharade is lucid, measured in tone, well argued, and amply documented. Koretz makes a powerful case that our test-based accountability policies are seriously misguided. His reminders throughout that testing per se is not the problem and his repeated calls for studies of better alternatives make his case all the more compelling. In the final third of the book, he begins to chart a better way forward. The ideas here are well worth attending to."--American Journal of Education

Book SynopsisThis book explores assessment practices that offer an enlightening and enabling view of all learners. Following the demise of national curriculum levels, the book embraces a unique opportunity to change how children are assessed. Rather than simply replacing the old structure with a new one, it focuses instead on enabling children to learn in meaningful ways so that assessment becomes a tool for improvement rather than judgment by building on two influential research studies, Learning without Limits (Hart et al 2004) and Creating Learning without Limits (Swann et al 2012). Inspired by a relentless focus on every childâs capacity to learn, the book explores what can be achieved when we remove limits on learning. Book SynopsisThis book offers fresh perspectives on the challenges of assessment and feedback in higher education. A must-read for university leaders, academics, and educational developers, it asks âwhat ifâ questions to unlock some of the systemic problems of assessment and feedback. It shifts the debate to focus on studentsâ experience at a programme level, introducing a different way of thinking about assessment and feedback, and advancing the value of theories of alienation and engagement. Based on the âTransforming the Experience of Students through Assessmentâ (TESTA) project, the book discusses a method for understanding the impact of assessment and feedback on student learning. Drawing on evidence from TESTA, it provides practical insights about changing programme assessment patterns to foster student agency and engagement. The book gives impetus to changing the design assessment and feedback, inviting academics, educational leaders, and students into more transparent, open, and shared decision-making about assessment and feedback beyond the module level. This key title is designed to support academics and educational leaders to making sustainable and systemic improvements to the pedagogy of assessment. It expands on good principles, practices, and theories about how students learn from assessment and feedback by paying attention to a programme level perspective of the student experience.Table of ContentsForeword Acknowledgements Part I: TESTA’s research and change process Introduction: Why another book on assessment and feedback? Chapters introduce a shared language of learning and move through seven key components: cognition, communication, creativity, control, compassion, co-ordination and the curriculum. Key features include: A framework for the holistic assessment of skills and attributes that contribute to accessing the curriculum, and a framework for intervention that is additional to, or different from, the differentiated curriculum A unique strengths-based progress tracker that establishes a baseline to inform intervention and determine progress over time A photocopiable and downloadable programme of materials, trialled and tested in both priTrade ReviewThe structured format and simple, non-jargon, language is a real strength of this book. It doesn’t just focus on what the child can’t do, but instead ensures the assessors are actively looking for the child’s strengths too, something that can often be overlooked when a child presents with SEND. The 7 distinct areas are all linked by the letter ‘C’ making them memorable. The Tracker also generates a quantifiable number, so the impact of additional support can be measured. Nadine Avenal, SEND Lead,Sapientia Education Trust We are just starting to use Judith's "7 C's" and can already see that it has immense potential for tracking and measuring progress in areas that cannot be tracked using traditional methods. I think it will be very helpful in allowing us to support the child in their wider personal development and will allow for a more individualised and collaborative approach. Cherie Pointon, SENCO, Dell Primary School The 7C's are just wonderful! The material is so great! Hannah Powley, St Nicholas Priory We are just beginning to explore the 7 C’s and attempting to pull it in to our own support plans. It’s great because it allows us to use it as its own support plan but is also incredibly adaptable meaning we are able to transfer it to our own support system. It has been such a valuable tool to enable staff to broaden their language around the children’s barriers to learning and enabled us to be specific in the support that we implement. It supports the children in understanding their barriers and ensures that they are part of the process when planning their next steps and allows them to take the ownership of their progress. The 7 C’s has also provided us with a clear baseline for our children and enables us to demonstrate those smaller more specific steps of progress related directly to their area of focus.
