Nova Science Publishers Inc Progress in Economics Research: Volume 39
Book SynopsisThis compilation begins by discussing the connection between perceived employability and job insecurity on psychological health and job-related outcome variables. A study testing this correlation is presented, with results suggesting that perceived employability and job insecurity facilitates the effects of self-efficacy on psychological health, job satisfaction, and dedication. Additionally, research on productivity growth in 55 major Australian urban water utilities over a four-year period is described. In this study, productivity growth was broken-down into technical efficiency and technological change by way of Malmquist indices. Later, price dynamics are investigated to determine market integration, market efficiency and spatial arbitrage. Based on empirical investigations, several policy implications are derived in terms of efficacy and effectiveness of policy measures, or interventions on trade policies. The authors provide a review of federal-level regulation of the U.S. interstate natural gas pipeline industry, placing modern rules and regulations into their appropriate historical context by reviewing the evolution of gas pipeline regulation over the course of the 20th Century. The authors also examine the question of the creation of global government and global currency, especially analyzing the current unstable financial system and the threat of war resulting from unstable intergovernmental relationships. The use of global currency is imagined under the surveillance of a Global Central Bank, which would consist of representatives of national governments with voting rights determined by the share of national GNP in total gross product in the community of participating nations. A paper exploring restaurant bankruptcy in the U.S. between 1980 and 2014 is included, with the goal of developing a bankruptcy prediction model and explaining that restaurateurs should be more cautious in selecting their operation types to aid in financial stability. The active relationship between economic growth, inflation, stock market development, and globalization is studied using the panel VAR methodology, with the objective of determining the behavior of certain variables and observing how these elements interact with one another. Another paper studies whether or not the financial market of China is integrated with the financial market of the U.S., with its data converted into cumulative partial sums by using a software component created by the authors in Octave language. By estimating the asymmetric generalized impulse response functions, the authors suggest that these financial markets are linked interactively when the markets are falling. A final paper is presented investigating the nature of dependence between stock prices and exchange rate in Nigeria from January of 2000 to December of 2015. Overall, the evidence indicates the dominance of the portfolio balance effect, with stock prices leading the exchange rate. This leads the authors to determine that stabilizing the stock market is imperative for exchange rate management to minimize the transmission of systemic risk and contagion between both markets.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Progress in Economics Research. Volume 40
Book SynopsisThis compilation explores the unique form of Dutch government taken at the time, and its relationship with trade policy successes of the most prosperous semi-gubernatorial body of the early modern period the Dutch East India Company (VOC). By examining the unique form of government taken by the Dutch Republic, the authors work out the nature of the relationship between the Dutch polity and the VOC, attempting to discern the link between the successes of the company and government policies. Afterwards, the authors analyse the main contributions of scientific literature so as to demonstrate that tourism, although having certain limitations as an instrument of economic development in some countries, may be an interesting tool for the improvement of a populations living conditions under specific circumstances. This book compiles the world''s main tourist destinations according to the growth of the economic performance of the tourist activity and of the tourist and economic development experienced during the last decade. With this objective, the authors combine information from a set of tourist and economic indicators for the main 45 tourist destinations over the period between 2000 and 2010. Destinations are ranked with respect to their average growth rate over the sample period. A paper is included which focuses on competitiveness research and examines the nature of tourism to provide a rationale for a Tourism Destination Competitiveness (TDC) model specific to tourism by evaluating the literature on the meaning of competitiveness and different perspectives of the concept. An assessment of the main arguments for and against comparative advantage and competitive advantage aids in building a better understanding on tourism flows on the basis of an integrated TDC model. Afterwards, the export structure and export performance of Macedonian economy is analysed, as a less developed transitional CEE country, in order to identify the main export opportunities for future economic growth by applying new structural economics and product space theory. In order to better inform related resource allocation and policy-level decisions, as well as to generate a rationale for continued support for health and development programs in Papua New Guinea, the book examines a range of related development constraints and develops a series of recommendations for their resolution based on smart intervention design, with a specific focus on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) components. Lastly, this collection examines the effect of financial development on economic growth conditions at the level of institutional quality for a panel of 21 Sub-Saharan African countries in the period of 1986-2010. This evidence suggest the existing institutions has not enhanced the finance-growth relationship in the region.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Alaska: Economic, Environmental, and Social
Book SynopsisThe authors begin this collection by linking human and ecological systems research to analyze resource management decisions for Alaskas first submerged aquatic invasive plant, Elodea spp.. A case study is presented which may aid other countries in management of elodea by outlining steps for future policy-making, with the goal of retaining the ecological integrity and economic value of Alaskas vast freshwater resources. Next, the authors use the De Martonne aridity index and the UNEP Index to determine the humidity of Alaskas Prince William Sound. The indices for climate variability indicate higher humidity in the western sides and lower humidity in the eastern sides. These results highlight the spatial distribution of the climate variables in Prince William Sound from southcentral Alaska. Following this, the Bering Glacier in South Alaska is analyzed for its size resultant from complexities of geographical position, accumulation area, and climate conditions. The results of the analysis illustrate the high variation of the Bering Glacier movements in response to climate change. The concluding chapter examines the beginning of orderly social policy in Russian America in 1784, when well-known merchant G.I. Shelikhov founded the first permanent Russian settlement on Kodiak Island off the southern coast of Alaska. A certain impetus to social policy was created by the monopoly Russian-American Company after their coming to power in Russian colonies of naval officers in 1818. The Russian-American Company abolished slavery, increased payments for furs, supplied natives with food during hunger strikes, and conducted mass vaccinations. Thus, the life of the Aleuts and dependent Eskimos slowly but gradually improved.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Bangladesh: Economic, Political and Social Issues
Book SynopsisBangladesh as an independent country started its journey just over forty-seven years ago. The country is full of possibilities and challenges. Bangladesh: Economic, Political and Social Issues has been organized around the economic, political and social opportunities and challenges of present Bangladesh. This book is the culmination of twelve chapters by twenty-four authors. Their extensive investigation reveals a lot about the social, political and economic context of Bangladesh. Since its inception, the Bangladesh economy is largely dependent on the agricultural sector. A good number of authors in this book cover the issue of agricultural sustainability, its achievements, challenges and potentials as well as its extension system. It also reveals the role of women in the agricultural economy. The book draws the present political state of Bangladesh in relation to its historical background. The clientelism, corruption, extremism, secularism and government system of Bangladesh has been discussed widely by another group of authors. The technological wave of the global civilization of the twenty-first century is surging in Bangladesh with industrial growth and development. The historical roles of farmers, fishers and other marginal groups are going through a harsh transformation. This book covers the changing social and economic structure of these communities. In recent years, like any other country of the world the climate of Bangladesh has changed a lot. Many adaptation interventions have been undertaken to mitigate the problem. These adaptation interventions and participatory forest (PF) management programs have been included in this book. It also moves on to the gender issue in agriculture, where a dominant Muslim normative order is prevalent as well as the considerable amount of violence faced by women.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Progress in Economics Research: Volume 41
Book SynopsisThis compilation opens with an address of the way in which economic growth in Malaysia largely relies on external market conditions, despite the fact that Malaysia successfully shifted from an agriculturally-based economy to one that is manufacturing-based. Thus, the authors present an in-depth discussion of economic growth and human capital development plans and their impacts on the labor market in Malaysia. Next, the authors offer an original justification for a new generation of regional economic policy for contemporary Ukraine through proper gradual representation of its basic elements. The logic and reshaping principles of forming an internal circuit of regional economic policy modernization are presented, along with ways to reconcile the interests of the national and regional levels when revising a regional policy and more. The French economy from 2010 to 2017 is reviewed, particularly covering the areas of industry, agriculture, the services sector and international trade. Also covered are employment trends and the labour market reforms over this period. Following this, the authors examine the impact of new technologies on office employment, particularly on clerical jobs, in Mexico. Drawing on recent research on the evolution of job offers published by a leading Mexican newspaper, the authors are able to conclude that office jobs are no longer defined by traditional skills but by multitasking ability. This collection goes on to discuss how the advancement of information technology, in conjunction with the popularity of mobile payment, has facilitated a drastic growth of e-commerce retail business around the globe in the past decade. In order to focus on core business processes such as product development and promotion, e-retailers commonly outsource the logistics and distribution aspects of e-commerce business to third-party logistics service providers. The objective of the following chapter is to determine the contribution of inequality of opportunities to the distribution of accessibility to basic education between 2001 and 2007 in Cameroon. The results lead the authors to recommend a reinforcement of policies such as the abolition of tuition fees, the organization of awareness campaigns for the under-educated and the distribution of scholarships to girls and vulnerable children. The authors suggest that a closer look at recent overlapping generations models (with renewable resources that are costly to harvest) lends support to the view of classical economists who took the existence of the stationary state of a competitive market economy for granted.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Thailand: Environmental Resources and Related
Book SynopsisThailand has been recognized as having rich natural resources, the natural capital to support the countrys economic development and the livelihood of Thai people. Tapping on its vast fertile area, the country has been one of the players in global food production for last four decades. However, these achievements have also had negative consequences on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and human health both in rural and urban areas. Nova Science Publishers Inc American Merchant Ships and Sailors
Book SynopsisIn all times and ages, the deeds of the men who sail the deep as its policemen or its soldiery have rightfully been sung in praise, but there are triumphs to be won by sea and by land greater than those of war, dangers to be braved more menacing than the odds of battle. The daily life of those who go down to the sea in ships is one of constant battle, and the whaler caught in the ice-pack is in more direful case than the blockaded cruiser. The captain of the ocean liner, guiding through a dense fog his colossal craft freighted with two thousand human lives, has on his mind a weightier load of responsibility than the admiral of the fleet. This book, originally published in 1902, is a timeless tribute and historically significant chronicle of the high courage, the reckless daring, and oftentimes the noble self-sacrifice of those who use the seven seas to extend the markets of the world, to bring nations nearer together, to advance science, and to cement the world into one great interdependent whole.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Progress in Economics Research: Volume 42
Book SynopsisIn relation to the perspectives of World Trade Organization members, Progress in Economics Research. Volume 42 examines key policy requirements involved in developing countries participation in future global e-commerce. This is based on a policy analysis of World Trade Organization e-commerce policies using grounded theory tools of deep-level inquiry. The authors go on to evaluate economic competitiveness in China, and its position as a global player in comparison with other World Trade Organization members using the Data Envelopment Analysis method. The dynamics behind socioeconomic inequality in Kenya are examined based on a reinterpretation of previously published works and existing data. In terms of political approaches to economic planning, Kenya has moved from the centralized statist approach in 1963 to a district focus strategy in the 1980s; an era of devolved funding from the 1990s and, since 2010, a devolved governance structure. Data from social sectors is highlighted to illustrate trends.Later, to assess the relationship between development paths and institutions in the Republics of the former Soviet Union, the authors build an index of development based on World Bank data. They consider the impact of governance on economic growth through a new index, also created from World Bank data. Also in relation to the former Soviet Union, the authors demonstrate that exemptions from taxation can be arbitrarily denied by fiscal authorities under invented pretexts. A stockholder and investor should know that, even in the course of simple transactions, he or she can encounter decisions of authorities contradictory to the law, misquoting of the legal codes by civil servants in their correspondence, backdating of official letters and embezzlement of registered letters. The closing chapter studies the Spanish fishing and processing sector of anchovy, analyzing its trade balance and prices for preparation to characterize the current situation of this sector at the national level. Production and economic performance are analyzed in the local, European and global context to define trends affecting the management of this species.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Russia's Policy in the Caspian Region
Book SynopsisThis book investigates the policy of Russia on the Caspian and in the nearby territories from old times to the beginning of the present millennium, thus, spanning several centuries. The book also discusses the motivations of the rulers of Rus', Moscow State, Russian Empire, the USSR and later on, Russia that pursued active foreign policy targeted to extension of the geopolitical influence and strengthening of the economic presence in the near-Caspian territories and on the Caspian Sea proper. The main stages of formation of the Russian foreign policy are studied. The causes underlying the rivalry of Russia with Persia and Turkey, Central Asian Khanates and European states for the leading positions on the Caspian are analysed. The authors describe the mechanisms used by Russia in its foreign policy with regard to the established political and economic conditions. Much attention is focused on the analysis of Russia's foreign policy in the Caspian region after disintegration of the USSR when the situation on the Caspian had changed drastically. Formerly there were two Caspian states -- USSR and Iran, but now three new independent states appeared (ie: Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan) which immediately became the focus of interest of non-regional states and leading oil and gas companies. This book describes how the policy of Russia has been changing in the face of a new geopolitical situation in the Caspian region. The approaches of Russia to addressing the regional problems, first of all, the international legal status of the Caspian Sea, hydrocarbon production and transportation, militarisation and ecology, etc. are analysed. All these factors urged Russia to develop new approaches towards the Caspian region. The book investigates the effect of the foreign policy of new Caspian states, the USA, EU and China on the Caspian policy of Russia. The complicated geopolitical situation on the Caspian and unceasing attention to its hydrocarbon resources force Russia to keep a close watch on the Caspian region that remains the main vector of the Russian foreign policy.Trade ReviewConsidering the specifics of the geographical and geopolitical location of the Caspian region, the features of the Russia policy there are revealed. There is a rich concentration of mineral and natural resources in the Caspian region, and new transport routes are actively operating. New routes can be realized there as well. All these factors are fully reflected in this book. - Dr Igor S. Zonn, Professor at The Moscow Sergei Witte University, MoscowThe book reflects the policy of Russia in the Caspian in the scientific field. The author convincingly showed that Russias efforts in that area have played a significant role in developing common approaches to environmental safety, and protection of the biodiversity of the Caspian Sea. - Dr Andrey G. Kostianoy, Professor at the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, MoscowThe monograph is not the authors first work devoted to Russian politics in the Caspian. In his book, the author explores the issues of the energy policy of Russia in the Caspian region, the features of its cooperation with the Caspian countries. The greatest interest presents the last part of the book, which reveals the current stage of the Caspian policy of Russia. Particularly, it demonstrates how Russia has managed to retain its influence as the most important transit country for Caspian oil and gas. Thanks to Russias efforts, a compromise approach in adopting the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea in August 2018 was developed. - Dr Mark A. We provide everything from the definition of Qualitative Economics (QE) to the use of it in our daily lives, which includes everything we do daily from families, relatives and friends to work, vacations and hobbies.Trade ReviewWhether one agrees or not with the thesis, this is a book well worth reading. Above all, Woody understands the economics, costs, financing and ROI (both economically and environmentally) that are needed to turn vision into reality. His work in creating qualitative economics has done a lot to change economics from a field of study into a science, especially as it relates to our energy needs and uses. What does clean energy mean, for example? He demonstrates that there is no clean coal and that natural gas is not truly clean either. These words, terms and numbers must be defined, examined and used to reverse the destruction of the earth, water and air. That is what this book is about and what Woody has brought into the mainstream conversation with his work on Circular Economics. This book provides cases and ways to make our planet, and its economy, green and sustainable for the long term. Our lives and our childrens lives depend upon learning new ways to see the world and taking action based on this knowledge NOW." -- Terry Tamminen, Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, Executive Director of the FoundationTable of ContentsFor more information, please visit our website at:https://novapublishers.com/shop/qualitative-and-quantitative-economics-q2e-making-economics-into-a-science/

Nova Science Publishers Inc Neoliberalism: Perspectives, History and
Book SynopsisThere are various ways to understand neo-liberalism, including through the economy, politics, education, and globalisation. In this book these topics will play a role in articulating the much-debated issue of the widening gaps between the rich and the poor, the left and the right, democracy and autocracy, and the educated and left behind. The subsequent study uses data on neoliberal discourses and practices in higher educational institutions in Ghana in order to situate neoliberalism in a historical framework, as well as examine its perception in universities. The closing chapter explores the possibility of transitioning from isolated monoliths of oligopolies into an ecosystem of a modular economy that is based on small or medium, competitive, community friendly and flexible enterprises.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Cuba: Policy, Restrictions and Embassy Injuries
Book SynopsisSince the early 1960s, when the United States imposed a trade embargo on Cuba, the centerpiece of U.S. policy toward Cuba has consisted of economic sanctions aimed at isolating the government. Chapter 1 reviews the U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Obama and Trump Administrations. Chapter 2 examines U.S. policy toward Cuba in the 116th Congress. Chapter 3 provides information on legislative provisions restricting relations with Cuba. It Restrictions on travel and remittances to Cuba have constituted a key and often contentious component in U.S. efforts to isolate Cuba's communist government since the early 1960s. Chapter 4 examines developments in U.S. policy restricting travel and remittances to Cuba, current permissible travel and U.S. diplomats and their families in Havana, Cuba, were affected by incidents that were associated with injuries, including hearing loss and brain damage. State has reported that over 20 U.S. diplomats and family members in Havana have suffered from medical conditions believed to be connected to the incidents, which began in late 2016 and have continued. By law, State is generally required to convene an ARB within 60 days of incidents that result in serious injury at, or related to, a U.S. mission abroad, but the Secretary of State can determine that a 60 day extension is necessary. Chapter 5 examines the extent to which State's ARB policy ensures that M/PRI is made aware of incidents that may meet the ARB statute criteria. Chapter 6 is the statement of Brian M. Mazanec concerning the injuries to U.S. personnel in Cuba. Chapter 7 reports on the U.S. response to injuries of U.S. Embassy personnel in Havana, Cuba On August 31, 2016, as part of a shift in U.S. policy toward Cuba, air carriers resumed scheduled commercial flights between the United States and Cuba, a route previously only open to public and private charter carrier operations. Chapter 8 examines (1) the extent to which TSA followed its standard operating procedures when assessing aviation security at Cuban airports in fiscal years 2012 through 2017; (2) the results of TSA's Cuban airport assessments in fiscal years 2012 through 2017; and (3) the results of TSA's air carrier inspections for Cuba in fiscal years 2016 -- when commercial scheduled air service between the United States and Cuba resumed -- and 2017.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Afghanistan: Legislation, Post-Taliban Governance
Book SynopsisFor nearly two decades, Congress has shaped the U.S. approach to Afghanistan and the ongoing conflict there. Chapter 1 provides a summary of legislative proposals considered in the 115th Congress that relate to U.S. policy in Afghanistan. As reported in chapter 2, the United States, partner countries, and the Afghan government are attempting to reverse recent gains made by the resilient Taliban-led insurgency since the December 2014 transition to a smaller international mission consisting primarily of training and advising the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF). The Trump Administration is reportedly considering proposals to deploy additional ground forces to Afghanistan and somewhat broaden their mission. These forces would likely be part of the Resolute Support Mission (RSM), the ongoing NATO mission to train and support Afghan security forces as explained in chapter 3. Chapter 4 provides background information for Congress on the levels of Department of Defense (DOD) troop and contractor personnel deployed in support of prior and ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chapter 5 addresses (1) what has been reported about ANDSF capabilities and capability gaps and (2) the extent to which DOD has information about the ANDSF's ability to operate and maintain U.S.-purchased equipment.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Israel and Palestine: Background, U.S Relations
Book SynopsisSince Israel's founding in 1948, successive U.S. Presidents and many Members of Congress have demonstrated a commitment to Israel's security and to close U.S.-Israel cooperation. Strong bilateral ties influence U.S. policy in the Middle East, and Congress provides active oversight of the executive branch's actions. Israel is a leading recipient of U.S. foreign aid and a frequent purchaser of major U.S. weapons systems. The Palestinians are an Arab people whose origins are in present-day Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Congress pays close attention -- through legislation and oversight -- to the Palestinians' ongoing conflict with Israel. The current structure of Palestinian governing entities dates to 1994. In that year, Israel agreed with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to permit a Palestinian Authority (PA) to exercise limited rule over Gaza and specified areas of the West Bank, subject to overarching Israeli military administration that dates back to the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Israel's political impasse with the Palestinians continues. Israel has militarily occupied the West Bank since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, with the PA exercising limited self-rule in some areas since the mid-1990s. The Trump Administration's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December 2017 and its relocation of the U.S. embassy there in May 2018 were greeted warmly by Israel but rejected by Palestinians and many other international actors.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Palestine: Past and Present
Book SynopsisThe volume traces the evolution of Palestine-Israel conflict through several historically-informed and roughly chronological, yet overlapping, investigations examining, inter alia: the effects of the First World War and the efforts of the Zionist movement culminating in the establishment of the State of Israel and the expulsion of over 700,000 Palestinians from the territories therein in 1947-48; missed opportunities for peace from 1967 to 1990 by reference to official policy documents; the revitalisation of Palestinian nationalism through the PLO after the 1967 war and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in 1994; the competing rise and evolution of Islamic nationalism in Palestine, predominantly embodied by the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas; attempts at Palestinian institution-building contextualised by the profound influence of international donors and Israel; and the ongoing evolution of the relationship between Hamas and Israel. The final chapter canvases some of the rapidly evolving issues that have arisen over the last few years, including upheavals caused by the election of the Trump administration in the United States, and the periodic and ongoing conflicts between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The volume will be of interest to both scholars and the general public wishing to understand the historical and present drivers of the conflict in the Holy Land.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Asian Countries: Economic, Political and Social
Book SynopsisOver the last four decades, Asian countries have experienced a substantial increase in their global competitiveness. While some of this is due to their economic activity, politics are also a contributing factor. Technological advances, particularly concerning the internet and social media, have also contributed, as have many other factors. We expect information and communication technology led by the development of the internet to make the transformation of knowledge easier and more efficient, thus contributing to faster economic growth worldwide. Sound macroeconomic policy and political conditions facilitate this process. Many Asian countries have learned from the experience of the Asian Crisis of 1987 when the Thai baht lost its value due to a shortage of reserves by the Central bank of Thailand, and capital outflow spread throughout the region. Asian countries now know that to avoid such a run on foreign currencies, they must hold enough reserves to support their own currency. Sound fiscal and monetary policies, as well as an exchange rate policy combined with an efficient banking system, are required to enhance the reserve policy. Another requirement for the effectiveness of macroeconomic policies is desirable political conditions to enhance international confidence in these countries. Strong political stability requires sound rules, laws, and democratic institutions that must be transparent. Granting excessive power to any one ruler has proved to lead to corruption which is an impediment to growth. This book addresses the issues above by providing theoretical and empirical evidence using data from some countries in Asia.Table of ContentsPreface; Competitiveness and Economic Growth in the Digital Economy of Asian Countries; Experimental Democracy: Lessons from Sri Lanka; Pakistan-United States Commodity Trade and Asymmetric S-Curve: Evidence from 41 Industries; Bank Efficiency across Asian Countries; On the Macroeconomic Linkages to Explain Chinas Internationalization of the Renminbi as Trade Settlement Currency; The Development Performance of Bangladesh: A Development Surprise or the Outcome of Democratic Transition?; An Economic Overview of India; Philippine International Reserve Demand and Monetary Disequilibrium: The Case of an Emerging Open Economy with Flexible Exchange Rates and Labor Exports; Does Disaggregated Political Risk in Asia and Other Countries Act as a Deterrent to Bilateral Trade Flow in the Globe?
