  • Cambridge University Press Can BRICS Dedollarize the Global Financial System

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisExisting scholarship has not systematically examined BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) as a rising power de-dollarization coalition, despite the group developing multiple de-dollarization initiatives to reduce currency risk and bypass US sanctions. To fill this gap, this study develops a ''Pathways to De-dollarization'' framework and applies it to analyze the institutional and market mechanisms that BRICS countries have created at the BRICS, sub-BRICS, and BRICS Plus levels. This framework identifies the leaders and followers of the BRICS de-dollarization coalition, assesses its robustness, and discerns how BRICS mobilizes other stakeholders. The authors employ process tracing, content analysis, semi-structured interviews, archival research, and statistical analysis of quantitative market data to analyze BRICS activities during 2009-2021. They find that BRICS'' coalitional de-dollarization initiatives have established critical infrastructure for a prospective alternative nTable of Contents1. Introduction; 2. • Cambridge University Press The Scientific Method

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe scientific method delivers prosperity, yet scientific practice has become subject to corrupting influences from within and without the scientific community. This essential reference is intended to help remedy those threats. The authors identify eight essential criteria for the practice of science and provide checklists to help avoid costly failures in scientific practice. Not only for scientists, this book is for all stakeholders of the broad enterprise of science. Science administrators, research funders, journal editors, and policymakers alike will find practical guidance on how they can encourage scientific research that produces useful discoveries. Journalists, commentators, and lawyers can turn to this text for help with assessing the validity and usefulness of scientific claims. The book provides practical guidance and makes important recommendations for reforms in science policy and science administration. The message of the book is complemented by Nobel Laureate Vernon L. Smith''s foreword, and an afterword by Terence Kealey.Trade Review'How does scientific practice differ from scientific method? What does it take to become a good scientist? How to write an excellent paper? In times where science must confront rumors and fake news and struggles with inept practices, this clearly written book is a timely and valuable resource. The authors provide how-to checklists, starting with an oath every scientist and journalist should take: to have read all the work they cite. I highly recommended this book to everyone who loves science.' Gerd Gigerenzer, Director of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy, Max Planck Institute for Human Development'From time to time, admirable human institutions lose their way and need reformation. As this important book makes clear, much contemporary science badly needs reformation. Scientists have been distracted from the honest, self-critical search for truth by careerism, ideology, and other lamentable forces. Too often ‘science’ has become well-funded propaganda for a political narrative. The book outlines what science should be, what problems contemporary science is facing, and how to fix them.' William Happer, Cyrus Fogg Bracket Professor of Physics, Emeritus, Princeton University'This compact book challenges the status quo regarding what gets produced and published in the realm of science. The authors make clear why much research contributes nothing to scientific knowledge and how this situation can be changed by requiring checklists that focus the attention of stakeholders - journal editors, funding agencies, lawyers, regulators, the media, and scientists themselves - on the essential attributes of science, especially the consideration of alternative hypotheses. A compelling manifesto for how to make investment in science produce valid and useful results.' Geoffrey Kabat, Epidemiologist and author of Hyping Health Risks'Contemporary science falls well short of its ideals for trustworthiness and usefulness. This book tells the truth, spotlighting shortcomings and corruption in scientific practice, and provides step-by-step guidance for baking integrity and value into our research and publication practices.' Denise M. Rousseau, H.J. Heinz II University Professor of Organizational Behavior and Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon UniversityTable of Contents1. Introduction; 2. Defining the scientific method; 3. Checklist for the scientific method; 4. Assessing the quality of scientific practice; 5. Scientific practice: Problem of advocacy; 6. Scientific practice: Problem of journal reviews; 7. Scientific practice: Problem of government involvement; 8. What is takes to be a good scientist; 9. How scientists can discover useful knowledge; 10. • Cambridge University Press Defence Acquisition and Procurement

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe acquisition and procurement of major weapons systems is fraught with difficulties. They tend to be delivered late, over budget and unable to meet requirements. This Element provides an economic analysis of why this happens. Market structure, demand by the military and supply by the arms firms, shapes the conduct of the agents and generates the poor performance observed. The military are trying to counter an evolving threat, subject to a budget constraint, high R&D costs and new technologies. The interaction between a government made up of warring tribes and arms firms with considerable market and political power is further complicated by a set of what economists call ''principal-agent'' problems, which are examined. While the poor performance has prompted many countries to propose reforms, the difficulty of the task and the institutional incentives faced by the actors mean that the reforms rarely solve the problem.Table of Contents1. Introduction; 2. Requirements: What weapons are needed?; 3. Price: What will the weapons cost?; 4. Sources: Where to buy the weapon?; 5. Contracts: how to buy the weapons?; 6. Buyer organisation: what are the problems?; 7. Externalities: are there spill-overs?; 8. Conclusion; References.

  • Cambridge University Press Brownian Models of Performance and Control

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDirect and to the point, this book from one of the field's leaders covers Brownian motion and stochastic calculus at the graduate level, and illustrates the use of that theory in various application domains, emphasizing business and economics. Book SynopsisOffers a well-rounded perspective on monopolization and exclusionary practices - such as predation, rebates, exclusive dealing, tying, refusal to deal - which speaks to economists, lawyers, policy-makers and practitioners. It provides dedicated technical sections, case studies, and policy discussions.Trade Review'Exclusionary Practices provides a comprehensive and coherent treatment of the most challenging and controversial area of competition policy. Astutely navigating US – EU differences, it delivers an enlightening blend of economic and legal reasoning that will be an immensely valuable resource for scholars and practitioners.' Joseph E. Harrington, Jr, Patrick T. Harker Professor, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania'Fumagalli, Motta, and Calcagno are at the forefront of the economic analysis of abuse of dominance. They have distilled their findings from over a decade of research and policy into a readable, authoritative, and insightful book. It is written by exactly the right people and comes out at an opportune moment. This superb book is a joy to read.' Tommaso Valletti, Chief Competition Economist, European Commission and Professor of Economics, Imperial College London'The growing gap between US and EU enforcement of exclusionary conduct cries out for the type of careful economic explanation supplied in this volume. Readers of every level will find the intuition, examples, cases, and models illuminating, and will come away with a better understanding of the overall debate as well as how to analyze any specific example.' Fiona Scott Morton, Theodore Nierenberg Professor of Economics, Yale School of Management'Exclusionary Practices is a superb contribution to the literature on this most complex and controversial area of competition policy. I congratulate the authors for providing a general analytic framework for the integration of economics-based reasoning into clear and administrable legal rules.' Richard Whish QC, King's College London'A bold and timely book. The authors make a robust case for evaluating exclusionary conduct using an effects-based approach and they provide the basic economic tools needed to make that approach work.' • Cambridge University Press Taming Intuition

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe success of democratic governance hinges on an electorate''s ability to reward elected officials who act faithfully and punish those who do not. Yet there is considerable variation among voters in their ability to objectively evaluate representatives'' performance. In this book the authors develop a theoretical model, the Intuitionist Model of Political Reasoning, which posits that this variation across voters is the result of individual differences in the predisposition to reflect on and to override partisan impulses. Individuals differ in partisan intuitions resulting from the strength of their attachments to parties, as well as the degree to which they are willing to engage in the cognitively taxing process of evaluating those intuitions. The balance of these forces - the strength of intuitions and the willingness to second guess one''s self - determines the extent to which individuals update their assessments of political parties and elected officials in a rational manner.Trade Review'Arceneaux and Vander Wielen's book is transformative as it explores a question that has been ignored when it comes to democratic citizenship: what happens when citizens reflect? They develop an impressive theory and use state-of-the-art methods to show that reflection fundamentally alters how citizens reason and make decisions. The book not only alters common understandings of citizens' behaviors, but also sets an agenda for the future of all research on democratic citizenship.' James N. Druckman, Payson S. Wild Professor of Political Science, Northwestern University'In this remarkable book, Arceneaux and Vander Wielen apply dual-process models of how people think to questions of how they reason about politics. They develop and refine a powerful conceptual model and then provide insightful, innovative empirical tests. I have long been looking for a book like this one that integrates recent insights about human cognition with long-standing questions about how voters think. This ambitious, thought-provoking research should be read by anyone who wants to understand the role of intuition and reflection in voter decision-making.' Daniel Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania'This book takes on one of the most important political questions of our time. Its central argument, and the evidence presented in support of it, is exciting and provocative. To date, no one has figured out how to reduce the myriad information-processing biases identified by Motivated Reasoning Theory that produce the polarization and lack of compromise plaguing our current politics. Unfortunately, giving people new and credible information in particular, and even education in general, often exacerbates these biases. The more subtle answer offered by Arceneaux and Vander Wielen is that those with the ability to coolly reflect on controversial topics can avoid making these common mistakes. Now if we can only figure out how to train people to hold such a rare combination of curiosity and cool-headedness! Taming Intuition will, at the very least, be an important voice in an important debate.' Nicholas Valentino, University of MichiganTable of Contents1. Democratic accountability and the 'rational' citizen; 2. A theory of individual differences in reflection and the intuitionist model of political reasoning; 3. Measuring individual differences in reflection; 4. Toeing the line: partisan identities and policy attitudes; 5. Throwing the rascals out: partisan identities and political evaluations; 6. • Cambridge University Press The Reasonable Robot

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAI and people do not compete on a level-playing field. Self-driving vehicles may be safer than human drivers, but laws often penalize such technology. People may provide superior customer service, but businesses are automating to reduce their taxes. AI may innovate more effectively, but an antiquated legal framework constrains inventive AI. In The Reasonable Robot, Ryan Abbott argues that the law should not discriminate between AI and human behavior and proposes a new legal principle that will ultimately improve human well-being. This work should be read by anyone interested in the rapidly evolving relationship between AI and the law.Trade Review'The Reasonable Robot provides highly original insights into one of the most important conversations of our time. Ryan Abbott brings a unique and sometimes controversial perspective to artificial intelligence as a physician, attorney, and eminent academic, but manages to present the subject in an accessible and unintimidating manner. This book is both enlightening about the future of law and artificial intelligence as well as a great read' Baron Timothy Clement-Jones, Chair of the House of Lords Artificial Intelligence Select Committee and Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence'Ryan Abbott's book cuts across all kinds of fields in an effort to teach us what the future will bring. From self-driving cars to AI doctors to robots that pay taxes, he offers a comprehensive blueprint for how the law needs to change to adapt to a world where it is machines, not people, committing torts and crimes.' Mark A. Lemley, William H. Neukom Professor, Stanford University, California'Artificial intelligence has evolved from an utopian vision to a fact of life. Thinking through how AI fits into our existing legal norms has become imperative. Ryan Abbott's book elucidates what challenges AI poses in different areas of the law and what legal principles can unleash AI's full potential for human progress. Anyone seeking insight into these questions will find this book both accessible to read and thought-provoking.' Carsten Fink, Chief Economist, World Intellectual Property Organization'The Reasonable Robot is an important work and a riveting read that provides a fascinating picture of a future that's already here. It explores profound legal and societal questions that every one of us should care deeply about, and secures Ryan's place as a leader in the field.' Corey Salsberg, Vice President, Global Head IP Affairs, Novartis'Professor Abbott's book offers a captivating analysis of the legal challenges that arise from the breathtaking proliferation of artificial intelligence in numerous areas of life, commercial relations and governmental decision-making. As 'AI' not only informs but increasingly drives and determines administrative procedures as well as policy choices, questions of liability require utmost scrutiny and must be seen in close connection with issues around agency, representation and legitimacy. In trying to understand the legal conundrum posed by robots' astonishing ascendance, this book is an excellent guide.' Peer Zumbansen, Founding Director, Transnational Law Institute, King's College London'This relatively thin book is densely packed with cross-over concepts of a large number of examples of machine generated inventions and potential legal challenges, taking various fragments of unique and high-level research from Ryan Abbott's professional life as a licensed physician, patent attorney and US professor of law as well as solicitor advocate in England and Wales.' Ursula Smartt, European Intellectual Property Review'… a lucid, jargon-free, and thorough examination of the effect AI is having on policy right now, rather than in a projected or possible future. The book will be of interest to upper secondary through postgraduate readers with some interest in AI, as well as to concerned professionals and researchers.' M. J. Moore, Choice'This work should be read by anyone interested in the rapidly evolving relationship between AI and the law.' Christian Mammen, Practice SourceTable of ContentsIntroduction. Book SynopsisThe economic impact and cost of shadow economies have become a pronounced international problem. This second edition uses new data from seventy-six developing, transition and OECD countries to give an overview on the subject and propose solutions to prevent illicit work.Trade Review'This second edition (incorporating the most recent data) is highly recommended; it is THE book on the shadow economy.' Bruno S. Frey, Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Science, University of Warwick'Shadow economy hides behind official labor and business. Boundaries between the official and unofficial economy are fuzzy and research scholars engage in lively debates about the validity of methods to estimate the size of shadow economy. This book provides an excellent theoretical frame to investigate shadow economy from a socio-economic perspective and highly relevant empirical data which allow (the reader) to draw practical conclusions for political interventions to combat growing economic crime.' 15 in stock

Book SynopsisA highly original account of why German and American intellectuals have been so strongly drawn to Max Weber's ideas. Of interest to scholars across a wide range of academic disciplines, as well as to those who simply want to understand why Weber mattered so much in the twentieth century.Trade Review'Joshua Derman's wonderful new study … attempts something that (to my knowledge, at least) has not been attempted before. His book not only provides an overview of Weber's thought, concerns, and historical context but also tells the complicated story of how his fragmentary writings were posthumously turned into the 'collected works' … The strange story of the sea change undergone by 'charisma' is alone worth the price of admission to Derman's study. Like the rest of the book it leaves one with an enhanced understanding of the contingencies, misunderstandings, and institutional vagaries that Weber encountered on his posthumous road to canonization.' Dana Villa, Perspectives on Politics'… an erudite intellectual history of Weber's reception - based on a remarkably comprehensive mastery of all of Weber's major texts and the voluminous German and American secondary literatures … Derman's history refreshes our view of Weber's entire oeuvre, highlighting the differences national, generational, ideological, and disciplinary boundaries made to Weber interpretation.' Matthew Specter, Central European History'This is a lucidly written book that anyone interested in Weber, twentieth-century intellectual history, or the way context shapes ideas will find illuminating.' Matthew Kadane, The American Historical Review'… Derman has made a fine contribution to Weber studies when it comes to understanding the reason for Weber's long life after life. For this book helps us recognize, once again, that Weber's charisma survived routinization precisely because it could not be reified despite canonization.'
