  • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Migration, Temporality, and Capitalism: Entangled Mobilities across Global Spaces

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBringing together a range of illustrative case studies coupled with fresh theoretical insights, this volume is one of the first to address the complexities and contradictions in the relationship between migration, time, and capitalism. While temporal reckoning has long fascinated anthropologists, few studies have sought to confront how capitalism fetishizes time in the production of global inequalities—historically and in the contemporary world. As it explores how the agendas of capitalism condition migration in Europe, North America, and Oceania, this collection also examines temporality as a feature of migrants’ experiences to ultimately provide a theoretically robust and ethnographically informed investigation of migration and temporality within a framework defined by the political economy of capitalism. Table of Contents1. Temporalities and Migration: Introduction2. Chronotopes of Migration Scholarship: The Challenges of Radical Contemporaneity3. The Timescape of Post-WWII Caribbean Migration to Britain: Non contemporaneity as Challenge and Opportunity4. Time at Sea: Temporal Horizons of Rescue and Its Avoidance in the Central Mediterranean5. • Springer Nature Switzerland AG How British Rule Changed India’s Economy: The

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Palgrave Pivot revisits the topic of how British colonialism moulded work and life in India and what kind of legacy it left behind. Did British rule lead to India’s impoverishment, economic disruption and famine? Under British rule, evidence suggests there were beneficial improvements, with an eventual rise in life expectancy and an increase in wealth for some sectors of the population and economy, notably for much business and industry. Yet many poor people suffered badly, with agricultural stagnation and an underfunded government who were too small to effect general improvements. In this book Roy explains the paradoxical combination of wealth and poverty, looking at both sides of nineteenth century capitalism. Between 1850 and 1930, India was engaged in a globalization process not unlike the one it has seen since the 1990s. The difference between these two times is that much of the region was under British colonial rule during the first episode, while it was an independent nation state during the second. Roy's narrative has a contemporary relevance for emerging economies, where again globalization has unleashed extraordinary levels of capitalistic energy while leaving many livelihoods poor, stagnant, and discontented. Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction.- Chapter 2: The making of British India.- Chapter 3: The business of the cities.- Chapter 4: Unyielding land.- Chapter 5: A poor state.- Chapter 6: End of famine.- Chapter 7: A different story? The princely states.- Chapter 8: Conclusion.

  • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Emergence, Entanglement, and Political Economy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume is intended to serve as a review of the “next generation” of political economy scholars in what can be called the “Wagnerian” tradition, which traces its roots to Buchanan and De Viti De Marco in the 1930s, who argued that any decision that results from a political entity must be the product of individual decision makers operating within some framework of formal and informal rules. To treat these decisions as if they were the product of one single mind, or even simply the additive result of several decisions, is to fundamentally misunderstand and mischaracterize the dynamics of collective action. Today, Richard Wagner is among the most prominent theorists in analyzing the institutional foundations of the economy and the organization of political decision-making. In this collection of original essays, former students schooled in this tradition offer emerging insights on public choice theory, public finance, and political economy, across a range of topics from voting behavior to entrepreneurship. Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction.- Chapter 2: Emergence and Entanglement in a Theory of Political Economy.- Chapter 3: Swimming in a Tuxedo: A Systems Theory Approach to Understanding Politics.- Chapter 4: Complex and Entangled Public Policy: Here Be Dragons.- Chapter 5: Taxonomy of Entrepreneurship: A Means-Oriented Approach.- Chapter 6: From Taciturn to Talkative Political Economy.- Chapter 7: Entanglement and Perverse Spontaneous Orders.- Chapter 8: The Tax Code as an Emergent Phenomenon.- Chapter 9: Political Property Rights and Entangled Political Economy.- Chapter 10: The Fiscal Squeeze: Budgets between Fiscal Illusion, Fiscal Commons, and the Tyranny of Experts.- Index.

  • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Alternative Ideas from 10 (Almost) Forgotten

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHow should we address today’s big problems, and what we can take from icons of economics past? How would John Maynard Keynes have resolved today’s debt problem, or how would Adam Smith have assessed the European carbon emission trading market? This book applies the ideas of ten renowned economists (Marx, Minsky, Keynes, Knight, Bergmann, Veblen, Sen, Myrdal, Smith, Robinson) to real world economic problems, directly or indirectly related to the causes and consequences of the 2008 financial crisis. Each chapter presents an economist, and structures the ‘problem’, the ‘insight’ (the economist’s idea), the ‘economist’ (short bio), and two ‘practices’ offering real-world alternatives. This book presents a lively and original approach that will be of interest to economists and non-economists alike, discussing key elements of an economics for a postcapitalist economy and connecting policy insights to real-world problems of today.Table of Contents

  • Springer Nature Switzerland AG An Introduction to Latin American Economics: Understanding Theory Through History

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis textbook serves as an introduction to the major economic topics and events in Latin America’s history, from the settling of the region by indigenous Americans and then Europeans, Africans and Asians, to the economic consequences of COVID-19. Each chapter concentrates on a particular period—for example, pre-Columbian America, the 1980s debt crisis, the 21st Century decline in income inequality—and introduces the concepts needed to understand the events of that period. These concepts include theories such as Dutch Disease and Dependency Theory, policies such as import-substituting industrialization and neoliberalism, and analytical tools such as the circular flow of income and the foreign exchange market. Descriptive data are used to illustrate these concepts: for example, Latin America’s current account balance during the 1970s and 1980s shows the impact of the debt crisis, while the relationship between money supply growth and inflation in Argentina during the 1980s and 1990s shows the impact of expansionary monetary policy and convertibility. With its focus on Latin American economic history and on the key concepts for understanding that history, this book can serve as the core textbook for an introductory course on Latin American Economics, or as a complementary text for an introductory course in Latin American Studies or a social science course on Latin America.Table of ContentsChapter 1. • Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Time-Travelling Economist: Why Education, Electricity and Fertility Are Key to Escaping Poverty

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis insightful and original book explores the key issues that countries in Africa and South Asia need to address in order to escape poverty. Challenging traditional assumptions about the world’s poorest countries, the top priorities to address are identified as adult literacy, electricity for manufacturing, and the consequence of the relationship between fertility and savings. These suggestions are placed within a historical perspective, placing discussions on modern day Africa and South Asia alongside the development of East Asia, Europe, and the Americas in previous generations and centuries. The Time-Travelling Economist aims to move conversations about development beyond the resource curse or private sector failings, with a fresh focus on the policies that governments can embark on independently and affordably that will transform their future. It will be of interest to anyone interested in the future of the world’s low income countries.Trade Review“How come no one told me about this book before? … it is one of the best popular economics books of the last decade, and one of the best books on economic development period. People should talk about it more! And to be sure, that description ‘popular’ is misleading. • Springer International Publishing AG The Rise of Chinas Economy

Book SynopsisThis book gives an in-depth and up-to-date insight into China's economy from a domestic as well an international perspective. The book covers the reform trajectory and performance of China's economy since Deng Xiaoping kicked-off the reform and opening-up policy in 1978 until the current challenges and economic policies under Xi Jinping including the integration in the world economy. The analysis is based on empirical evidence and respective data. This enables the reader to take an unprejudiced look on China's political economy. The book applies fundamental economic concepts in a non-technical way to the case of China and processes the main relevant scientific and applied research to the topic. Readers gain an in-depth understanding of the second largest global economy that will shape the twenty-first centuryits past, present, and future. The book is structured into three concise chapters: the reform trajectory of China's economy since 1978, the domestic and international fundamentals of China's economy today, and the long-term challenges and respective economic policies for the future. One of the key insights of the book is that China's economy and its economic model are at a critical tipping point, after a long period of successful development from a low to a middle-income country. This includes the need for a new growth model and a renewed integration into the world economy. Both challenges pose systemic risks that could seriously impede the future development of China and its economy if not carefully managed.
