Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG The Evolution of Industrial Districts: Changing Governance, Innovation and Internationalisation of Local Capitalism in Italy
Book SynopsisItalian industrial districts (IDs) recently attracted international attention because their performance during the last few decades contradicted the alleged weakness of industrial structures based on SMEs in "traditional" sectors. The book analyses some developments taking place in Italian IDs and local systems of production that can represent a new stage of evolution for the backbone of the Italian economy. Based on the extensive use of original databases three main trajectories of change in IDs are presented. The first trajectory is the increasing role of "groups" of manufacturing SMEs arising from mergers and acquisitions as well as spin-off growth processes at the "family firms" level. The second one is the consolidation of innovation capabilities in IDs. And the third one is the internationalisation process of Italian IDs through both trade and foreign direct investment. The essays suggest that Italian IDs are again evolving by coherent adaptations which will have, however, uncertain outcomes.Table of ContentsThe structural evolution of industrial districts and adaptive competitive advantages.- I. Theoretical Perspectives.- Regional governance and economic development: A European perspective.- Italian industrial districts: Facts and theories.- Modelling the structure and evolution of industrial districts.- II. Presses Interuniversitaires Europeennes Innovation Networks and Clusters: The Knowledge
Book SynopsisIn Economics, networks are increasingly used to describe the many links created between independent companies, as well as between them and other institutions (universities, banks, venture capital, etc.). In the current global and knowledge-based economy, they can be characterised as knowledge factories and knowledge boosters. They feed the internal processes of innovation (collaborative innovation) or the external processes of innovation, created by the propagation effects that come from inter-firm collaboration. The book explains how innovation networks are at the origin of the production of new knowledge that will be transformed and used in common as well as in separated production processes. This characteristic of networks as knowledge factories gives incentives to further investment in the production of knowledge and ensures the cumulativeness of the innovation process. Some of the authors clearly take a territorial point of view and study how clusters (in different parts of the world: Europe, Eastern Asia and North America) propelled by the quality of the innovation networks they enclose, can be characterised as knowledge pools into which the local actors will be able to draw to reinforce their individual and collective competitiveness. This book also includes analyses of the quality of the networks built within clusters, which may help their identification.

United Nations Industrial development report 2020:
Book SynopsisThe emergence and diffusion of advanced digital production (ADP) technologies clustered around the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) is radically altering the nature of manufacturing production, increasingly blurring the boundaries between physical and digital production systems. The significant requirements of ADP technologies are opening questions on whether industrialization is still a feasible or even a desirable strategy to achieve economic development. This publication contributes to this debate by presenting fresh analytical and empirical evidence on the future of industrialization in the context of a technological paradigm shift. According to the report, it is by engaging with industrialization that countries can build and strengthen the skills and capabilities needed to compete and succeed within the new technological paradigm.

United Nations Industrial development report 2022: the future of
Book SynopsisThe global economy cannot fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic unless internationally coordinated actions are taken, and the industrial sector must be central to these efforts. The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated that manufacturing remains the backbone of our economies. Yet, it also shows the vulnerability of our production systems to sudden shocks. For recovery to take hold, it is critical to understand how the pandemic has affected the sector, and the prospects for the future of industrialization as economies worldwide continue to rebound and recover. The Industrial Development Report 2022 contributes to this discussion by providing evidence at the country, industry, and firm level and documents the impacts of the crisis, by examining the drivers of resilience and vulnerability in those same contexts. The main finding of this report is that industrial capabilities are a key driver of resilience. The industrial sector provides employment and income generation opportunities across the globe. During the pandemic, the sector ensured continuous access to essential goods and services for populations all over the world, including food, medical equipment, and pharmaceutical products. Indeed, this report reveals that countries with stronger manufacturing capabilities and more diversified industrial sectors have weathered both the economic and the sanitary impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic better than their peers. Findings documented in the report strongly reaffirm the centrality of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and foster innovation), which is at the core of UNIDO's mandate, to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Springer Scientists as Entrepreneurs: Organizational Performance in Scientist-Started New Ventures
Book Synopsis"When you are doing something that is a brand new adventure, breaking new ground, whether it is something like a techno logical breakthrough or simply a way of living that is not what the community can help you with, there is always the danger of too much enthusiasm, of neglecting certain mechan ical details. Then you fall off. 'A danger path this is. ' When you follow the path of your desire and enthusiasm and emotion, keep your mind in control, and don't let it pull you compulsively into disaster. " Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth Through ten years of working with and observing scientists in the bio medical fields, I have found Joseph Campbell's words to be especially applicable to the scientist who decides to embark on an entrepreneurial journey. Joseph Campbell was not a student of entrepreneurship. His scholarship was contained in a series of comprehensive studies of mythology, the captivating stories of mankind's search over the ages for truth, meaning and significance. Still, his advice here contains many of the essential ingredients of successful science-based venturing: the charting of new ground socially, technological breakthroughs, enthusiasm and emotion balanced by careful reasoning, and finally, awareness of the danger of neglecting details. Coming from such a different philosophical and occupational culture into entrepreneurship and business, the scientist faces extraordinary challenges although the rewards of putting together a successful company can be equally satisfying.Table of ContentsI Introduction, Research and Methodology.- 1. Springer Verlag, Singapore Workers and Margins: Grasping Erasures and
Book SynopsisThis book focuses on informal workers and margins and seeks to advance the discourse on the concepts of ‘work’, ‘workers’ and ‘margins’. By largely focusing on informal, non-formal and non-industrial sector workers where unionism, collective bargaining, and labour laws have little influence, the book promotes approaches to understanding alternate worker politics and organising practices. As such, it presents an alternative to conventional approaches to understanding workers in management and organisation studies. The book draws attention to the mechanisms of erasure implicit in disciplinary and governmental practices that allow the worker to remain invisible. By making the worker visible, it seeks to go beyond economistic and psychological approaches to work(ing) to understand the worker as a human being, with all the complexity, vulnerability and agency that status implies. Further, it seeks to go beyond worker victimhood to gather narratives of workers’ worlds and the possibility of alternate worlds. The contributing authors bring together diverse perspectives from fields including industrial relations, environment, displacement, collective action, livelihoods, rural development, MSMEs, organisational behaviour and entrepreneurship to present a textured and multidimensional view of workers and their worlds.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Workers and Margins: Grasping Erasures and Possibilities within Management Studies.- Section 1: Conceptual Aspects on Workers and Margins.- Chapter 2: Skill Formation and Precarious Labour: The Role of Industrial Training Institutes in India 1950-2018.- Chapter 3: Labor Beyond the Labor Market: Interrogating Marginality.- Chapter 4: Representation of Worker Marginalization and Quest for Livelihood Justice.- Chapter 5: Death of the Artisan: An Indigenous View on Marginalisation.- Section 2: Being Marginal.- Chapter 6: The Literary Worlds of Workers: Narratives of Art from the Margins.- Chapter 7: The Cosmos of Public Sector Township: Democracy as an Intellectual Culture.- Chapter 8: Marginality and its Contestations: A Case of Mining Affected in Goa.- Chapter 9: The Anti-power of the Marginalised: A postcolonial Perspective.- Chapter 10: Occupational Prestige and Informal Work: Women Domestic Workers in India.- Section 3: Surviving Marginalisation.- Chapter 11: Putting the Marginalised out of the Margins: Role of Mobilisation, Collectivisation and Livelihood Interventions.- Chapter 12: Getting Marginalised and Surviving.- Chapter 13: Leather Artisans-Workers and Global Value Chains: Protecting Autonomy, Enacting Dissent.- Chapter 14: CSO, Livelihoods and Margins.

Springer Verlag, Singapore The Efficiency and Creativity of Product
Book SynopsisThis is the first book that comprehensively describes the history of the game software industry in Japan. A major objective here is to identify the key determinants of the emergence of the business, the maturing of the market, and the changes brought about by innovations, based on the history of the Japanese industry. To date, similar books have focused only on particular topics of the game software industry, such as the success of Nintendo and Sony and the uniqueness of the Japanese industry. There are no books that interpret the development process of this industry from the point of view of innovation. To fully understand the business and derive insightful lessons from it, however, requires a careful and thorough examination of its development process. Currently, many companies aim to improve efficiency by using information and communications technology (ICT), but it is difficult to maintain a balance between the pursuit of efficiency and the encouragement of creativity. In the case of Japan’s game software industry, firms have pursued higher efficiency in product development to build competitive advantage, resulting in a low rate of radical innovation and causing the slow growth of the industry. In certain situations, the development activities that target the creation of new products may, in themselves, hinder the creation of truly new products. This book conceptualizes this phenomenon as a “development productivity dilemma” and clarifies the mechanisms behind it. The dilemma, like the productivity dilemma in the manufacturing industry, evokes a certain innovation pattern and prevents potential growth. Understanding the lessons from the game software business presented in this book, managers, researchers, and policymakers can gain insight into the mechanisms leading to industrial maturity and clues to avoid the development productivity dilemma.Table of ContentsCh1. A fundamental dilemma: efficiency versus creativity.- Ch2. Analytical framework and the research design: Innovation pattern and evolution of industry.- Ch3. The origins of the game software business in Japan: the movement till 1970’s.- Ch4. Creating New Demand: the start-up of the new industry in early 1980s.- Ch5. Springer Verlag, Singapore Political Economy of Malaysia’s Industrial Policy: Institutional Capacity and the Automotive Industry
Book SynopsisThis book examines the national automotive policy in Malaysia to help readers gain an understanding of the country’s industrial policy-making processes. Addressing a gap in analysis of the political economy of the national automotive policy, the research presented combines the new institutional theory and the developmental state approach to provide new insights into elite policymakers’ measures to shield domestic automotive enterprises from pro-market reforms. The formation of the national car project marks a turning point for Malaysia's industrial development as a country, which it envisions will lead to it becoming a major player in the global automotive market. However, the domestic institutional factors embedded in ethno-economic interests and patronage constrain national car-makers, limiting their potential to grow, and instead causing a slowdown in the industry.Allowing readers to understand the background to Malaysia’s heavy industrialisation programme and the birth of its national car projects, this book critically discusses the significance of institutional context in policy outcomes, and highlights how institutions and policies have impact growth or decline. It is a valuable resource relevant to analysts, researchers and students who are interested in the political economy of the national industrial policy and automotive industry in Malaysia and beyond.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Theoretical framework.- Malaysia automotive policy and industrial policy.- The political economy of the national car project.- Political economy analysis of the national automotive industry.- Conclusion.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Inclusive Value Chains: A Pathway Out Of Poverty
Book Synopsis“Modern” integrated value chains need not necessarily exclude the smallest producers as this book aims to explain in detail by case studies. The issue is particularly topical in India, where modern retailing has come to the scene only recently and the majority of whose population are still small farmers and artisans. Following a brief introduction to the problem, 14 case studies from India are presented to illustrate how it is being solved in practice. The book also discusses the impact of organized retailing on small-scale traders, and finally analyses the case studies for an overview, with conclusions and learnings drawn from them. Academic Studies Press The Coming of New Industrial Society: Reloaded
Book SynopsisThe book explores the effect of modern technological shifts on human society, showing that technologies are undergoing accelerating qualitative changes that open up new opportunities for personal development and satisfaction of wants and, simultaneously, engender risks associated with growing opportunities of human interference with nature and technogenic stress on the environment. Based on the study of cutting-edge technologies and resulting socioeconomic shifts, Bodrunov’s analysis outlines the shape of the civilizational crisis we face. It can only be overcome by founding a new industrial society of the second generation (if we consider the new industrial state described by J. K. Galbraith as the first generation) reliant on knowledge intensive material production and the gradual removal of humans from immediate material production.Trade Review“Sergey Bodrunov’s lively book addresses one of the most controversial consequences of liberal globalization—the deindustrialisation of the advanced capitalist states. Following the line of thinking of writers such as Clark Kerr and J.K. Galbraith, Bodrunov insists on the revival of industrialization and in doing so he makes advances on earlier theorizing. He insists that the development of civilization calls for a higher level of material production predicated on human knowledge and he anticipates much of current theorizing about the effects of artificial intelligence. In a provocative discussion, predicated on the experience of post-socialist Russia, he calls for positive economic policies to enhance the capabilities of modern economies to advance to higher levels of industrial development. The book will appeal to readers seeking solutions to modern economic problems through state coordination.”— David Lane, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Cambridge, UK“As Marx, Veblen and John Kenneth Galbraith understood, human society co-evolves with its material and technological conditions, which fact has grave implications for those seduced by financialization or the post-industrial mirage. In The Coming New Industrial State: Reloaded, Sergey Bodrunov gives a fair—and sometimes harsh—portrait of modern Russia's fall into dependence on outside technologies, machines, and components. He advocates a path forward for Russia at the technical frontiers, with a mixed economy rooted in ‘an authentic culture’ without which, he writes, ‘there can be no effective industrial development.’ The war and sanctions may now catapult this analysis to the forefront.”— James K. Galbraith, The University of Texas at Austin, Member, Free Economic Society and Foreign Member, Russian Academy of Sciences“Sergey Bodrunov’s work is a major contribution to human knowledge, rooted both in his practical experience in Russian industry and government, and in revival of interest in the most profound issues in the philosophy of thought. It deserves the attention of everyone with an interest in innovation. But beyond that, anyone concerned with the rising challenge of new technologies should read it. At the center of The Coming New Industrial State lies the following proposition: until now, technology has driven society. The ‘information economy’ calls for a different relationship; it is society that must drive technology. Innovation, therefore, henceforth constitutes social innovation; a different way of organizing society. Bodronov not only poses the question, but provides much-needed answers.”— Alan Freeman, Geopolitical Economy Research Group, University of ManitobaTable of ContentsIntroductionPart One: Material Production and Industry: Technology, Labor, and ProductChapter 1: Production and Its Product: The Industrial Mode of ProductionChapter 2: The Service Industry, Material Production, and Their Correlation in the Modern EconomyPart Two: The Russian Economic System and (De)industrializationChapter 3: Industrialization of the Economy as a Factor of Social Development; The Phenomenon of Modern DeindustrializationChapter 4: Industrial Development in Russia: Lessons from the PastChapter 5: The Deindustrialization of Russia and the Challenges of ReindustrializationChapter 6: Techno-Economic Paradigms and the Renewal of the Russian Economy: The Political-Economic AspectChapter 7: The Russian Economic System: The Future of High-Tech Industrial ProductionPart Three: The New Industrial State v.2Chapter 8: The New Industrial State of the Twentieth CenturyChapter 9: The New Industrial State v.2: The Parameters of its GenesisPart Four: Reindustrialization, Import Substitution, and Active Industrial PolicyChapter 10: Technological Leadership and National SecurityChapter 11: Innovative Economic Development: Into NIS.2Chapter 12: Industrial Policy as a Tool of Reindustrialization and Import SubstitutionChapter 13: Imperatives, Opportunities, and Challenges of ReindustrializationChapter 14: The Revival of Production, Science, and Education: The Primary Priority of Modern Industrial PolicyChapter 15: NIS.2 as a Social SystemConclusion

Academic Studies Press Noonomy: The Trajectory of Global Transformation
Book SynopsisNoonomy explores the effect of modern technological shifts on human society. The author shows that technologies are about to undergo qualitative changes which will create new opportunities for personal development and the satisfaction of wants and, simultaneously, engender risks associated with growth opportunities of human interference with nature and technogenic stress on the environment. Based on the study of cutting-edge technologies and resulting socioeconomic shifts, Bodrunov makes the conclusion about the upcoming civilizational crisis. The crisis can be overcome through the formation of a new industrial society of the second generation reliant on knowledge-intensive material production and gradual removal of humans from immediate material production processes. These two trends can fully develop only subject to the transition from the current socioeconomic formation to a non-economic one–the noonomy.Table of ContentsForewordTo the Reader: A Door to the FutureThinkers Who Have Contributed to the Study of the Interconnections between Technological and Social Development Step One: Grasping RealityStep Two: Into the World of New TechnologiesStep Three: To the Threshold of Technological RevolutionStep Four: The New Industrial Society’s Second GenerationStep Five: Civilization at a CrossroadsStep Six: Nooindustrial ProductionStep Seven: Culture as an Economic ImperativeStep Eight: From Economy to NoonomyConclusion: The Path Towards Nootranformation

Information Age Publishing Managerial Practice Issues in Strategy and
Book SynopsisThe field of strategy science has grown in both the diversity of issues it addresses and the increasingly interdisciplinary approaches it adopts in understanding the nature and significance of problems that are continuously emerging in the world of human endeavor. These newer kinds of challenges and opportunities arise in all forms of organizations, encompassing private and public enterprises, and with strategies that experiment with breaking the traditional molds and contours. The field of strategy science is also, perhaps inevitably, being impacted by the proliferation of hybrid organizations such as strategic alliances, the upsurge of approaches that go beyond the customary emphasis on competitiveness and profit making, and the intermixing of time-honored categories of activities such as business, industry, commerce, trade, government, the professions, and so on. The blurring of the boundaries between various areas and types of human activities points to a need for academic research to address the consequential developments in strategic issues. Hence, research and thinking about the nature of issues to be tackled by strategy science should also cultivate requisite variety in issues recognized for research inquiry, including the conceptual foundations of strategy and strategy making, and the examination of the critical roles of strategy makers, strategic thinking, time and temporalities, business and other goal choices, diversity in organizing modes for strategy implementation, and the complexities of managing strategy, to name a few. This book series on Research in Strategy Science aims to provide an outlet for ideas and issues that publications in the field do not provide, either expressly or adequately, especially as regards the comprehensive coverage deserved by certain emerging areas of interest. The topics of the volumes in the series will keep in view this objective to expand the research areas and theoretical approaches routinely found in strategy science, the better to permit expanded and expansive treatments of promising issues that may not sufficiently align with the usual research coverage of publications in the field.Managerial Practice Issues in Strategy and Organization contains contributions by leading scholars on significant issues relating to managerial practices in the field of strategy science research. The 11 chapters in this volume cover the topics of Big Science collaborations, open innovations in pharmaceutical companies, complementary roles and relative optimism of company CEOs, CFOs, and Board Chairs, business modelling, management of uncertainty, meta-management practices, proximity in innovation networks, institutional logics in alliances, and using technology in teaching. The chapters collectively present a wide-ranging review of the noteworthy research perspectives on the managerial practice issues in strategy and organization.
