Springer International Publishing AG Stochastic Analysis for Finance with Simulations
Book SynopsisThis book is an introduction to stochastic analysis and quantitative finance; it includes both theoretical and computational methods. Topics covered are stochastic calculus, option pricing, optimal portfolio investment, and interest rate models. Also included are simulations of stochastic phenomena, numerical solutions of the Black–Scholes–Merton equation, Monte Carlo methods, and time series. Basic measure theory is used as a tool to describe probabilistic phenomena. The level of familiarity with computer programming is kept to a minimum. To make the book accessible to a wider audience, some background mathematical facts are included in the first part of the book and also in the appendices. This work attempts to bridge the gap between mathematics and finance by using diagrams, graphs and simulations in addition to rigorous theoretical exposition. Simulations are not only used as the computational method in quantitative finance, but they can also facilitate an intuitive and deeper understanding of theoretical concepts. Stochastic Analysis for Finance with Simulations is designed for readers who want to have a deeper understanding of the delicate theory of quantitative finance by doing computer simulations in addition to theoretical study. It will particularly appeal to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and business, but not excluding practitioners in finance industry. Trade Review“This book gives an introduction to financial mathematics. It presents also some background of mathematical facts necessary for understanding modern finance. … For the reader convenience, the book contains a detailed contents, a list of figures, a list of tables, a list of simulations, a list of acronyms and a list of used symbols.” (Jacek Jakubowski, zbMATH 1409.91002, 2019)“This excellent textbook is addressed to undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and finance who want to study the main tools of stochastic calculus and its application to quantitative finance. Also, it can be used as a reference book for practitioners and professionals from the financial industry who want a better understanding of the theoretical aspects of stochastic calculus, and how it can be used in the pricing of financial derivatives.” (Carlos Vázquez Cendón, Mathematical Reviews, August, 2017)Table of Contents

University of Minnesota Press Take Back the Economy
Book SynopsisTrade Review"Take Back the Economy is the single most farsighted and practical work enlightening us on the path to a steady transition toward a genuine postcapitalist world. It is based on the presupposition that reorienting the economy means much more than the control of production—it means reinventing ourselves, our communities, and our world in profound ways. Out of this act of ‘reframing’ there emerges a novel understanding of work, enterprise, market, property, even finance. In this wonderful new work in the tradition of Gibson-Graham, students, activists, movements, and communities will find a toolkit for ethical and effective action any time, any place."—Arturo Escobar, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill"Take Back the Economy is a valuable, engaged accessible and very clear addition to the Community Economics Collective oeuvre, and I hope it will be read widely and--more importantly--change the world."—Antipode"Readable, practical, radical."—Sociology"A most exquisitely conducted study into the not-for-profit or other side of organisations. Little, Brown & Company Valley of Genius: The Uncensored History of
Book SynopsisRarely has one economy asserted itself as swiftly--and as aggressively--as the entity we now know as Silicon Valley. Built with a seemingly permanent culture of reinvention, Silicon Valley does not fight change; it embraces it, and now powers the American economy and global innovation. So how did this omnipotent and ever-morphing place come to be? It was not by planning. It was, like many an empire before it, part luck, part timing, and part ambition. And part pure, unbridled genius...Drawing on over two hundred in-depth interviews, VALLEY OF GENIUS takes readers from the dawn of the personal computer and the internet, through the heyday of the web, up to the very moment when our current technological reality was invented. The book interweaves stories of invention and betrayal, overnight success and underground exploits, to tell the story of Silicon Valley like it has never been told before. These are the stories that Valley insiders tell each other: the tall tales that are all, improbably, true.

Oxford University Press Inc Market Liquidity
Book SynopsisThe way in which securities are traded is very different from the idealized picture of a frictionless and self-equilibrating market offered by the typical finance textbook. In Market Liquidity, Thierry Foucault, Marco Pagano, and Ailsa Röell offer a more accurate take on the liquidity of securities markets, its determinants, and its effects. They start from the assumption that not everyone is present at all times simultaneously on the market, and that even the limited number of participants who are have quite diverse information about the security''s fundamentals. As a result, the order flow is a complex mix of information and noise, and a consensus price only emerges gradually over time as the trading process evolves and the participants interpret the actions of other traders. Thus, a security''s actual transaction price may deviate from its fundamental value, as it would be assessed by a fully informed set of investors. Market Liquidity takes these deviations seriously, and explains why and how they emerge in the trading process and are eventually eliminated. Drawing on the analytical tools and empirical methods from a well-defined field within financial economics--market microstructure--the authors confront many striking phenomena in securities markets, from liquidity changes over time to temporary deviations from asset fair values. In the fully revised second edition of Market Liquidity, Foucault, Pagano, and Röell bring readers up to speed on recent changes in market structures and financial regulation. New chapters cover the relationship between financial instability and market liquidity, as well as the role and effects of algorithmic and high-frequency trading. Including new illustrative examples of market malfunction and novel insights from recent research on security markets, Market Liquidity provides a comprehensive and authoritative account on market microstructure. To access the companion website, which includes student and instructor resources, please visit https://global.oup.com/us/companion.websites/9780199936243/

Developing a general framework summarizing the leadership and management cycle in natural resources for practitioners, the book provides a synthesis of leadership theory and practice stemming from the personal and spiritual values of work, and the key principle of aligning organizational resources and actions with stated intentions. It discusses the somewhat unique context of natural resources, comprised of private and public goods and services and complex societal values. Key strategies that enable natural resource professionals to be leaders at all stages and positions in their career, including vision and sustainability, proficient human resources management, fairness and merit, and transparency and openness are analyzed. Case studies of famous natural resource leaders and activists, including Ding Darling, David ATrade Review"This book offers a comprehensive review of the leadership and management literature. In addition, it tells the story of leaders, including the author, who have given their lives to caring for and protecting the natural resources that we all hold in common. We owe them all a debt of gratitude."Peter Block, Organization Development Consultant, Author, The Empowered Manager"Fred Cubbage is as frank, as he is knowledgeable. A great book to become better prepared for jumping into leadership challenges wherever you are in your career!" Max Krott, Professor for Forest and Nature Conservation Policy, Georg-August University of Göttingen, Germany"In this book, Dr. Cubbage has provides a valuable collection of principles and perspectives on leadership in natural resources that have not existed before. First, it is the confluence of two scholarly rivers, one being key principles from iconic management gurus and the other being key philosophies of iconic conservation leaders. Second, it details his personal applications of these principles and philosophies through his life as an honored practitioner, manager and leader in natural resources and in several contexts. In this way, his book is also a rare glimpse into the real-world trials and travails of an everyday leader who chose to step into the arena in the finest tradition of Teddy Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot." Tom Davidson, Forester, MBA, MS Organizational Development, Leadership Nature"In times like today, times of great change, natural resource practitioners must cultivate — intentionally grow — their personal abilities to lead people and manage resources well. Highly effective skills to lead and manage well are needed now more than ever in natural resource-related professions. I highly recommend this book for that personal cultivation and growth, but I recommend the book specifically for facilitated, small group or class discussions. The insights provided are best internalized by facilitated discussions followed by personal reflection, which is high octane fuel for personal growth in this essential field."Steve Bullard, former forestry professor, department chair, and dean, and recently retired as provost, Stephen F. Austin State UniversityFred Cubbage provides a thoughtful examination of organizational management as well as his own examples of leadership applications in forestry and natural resources. Fred has succinctly highlighted honest cases of challenges that other conscientious natural resource professionals are likely to encounter during their career, as well as pitfalls and rewards associated with their leadership. I highly recommend it." — Ed Catmull, cofounder, Pixar; retired President, Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios; and coauthor, Creativity, Inc."Culture change does not come from a wish or a prayer. Emerald Publishing Limited Delivering Entrepreneurship Education in Africa:
Book SynopsisEntrepreneurship education is crucial for economic development. However, its current focus on Western pedagogy raises concerns about its relevance in Africa. The lack of African-oriented definitions of entrepreneurship education may be connected to the limited interest in entrepreneurship as a career in the region. Unlike developed countries, where entrepreneurship drives innovative industries, African entrepreneurship is often driven by survivalist intentions. This raises questions about how entrepreneurship in Africa contributes to the economy without promoting creative innovation. Given these factors, evaluating the role of entrepreneurship education in this context is essential. Delivering Entrepreneurship Education in Africa brings together a collection of academic studies that offer an in-depth analysis of the current state of entrepreneurship education in Africa. The chapter authors engage discussions on how to make entrepreneurship education an attractive field of study for African students. The chapters critique the current teaching styles of entrepreneurship and suggests creative ways of improving entrepreneurship pedagogy while offering approaches to make it an attractive field of study. De Gruyter The Market Mind Hypothesis: Understanding Markets
Book Synopsis What is economics’ missing link? Recent economic crises have had a devastating impact on society. Worryingly, they gravely risked a collapse of the financial system. These crises also painfully revealed economics’ blind spots. Crucially, economics is not an innocent bystander but central to the problem. In this pioneering book, Patrick Schotanus explains that economics’ mechanical worldview is the ontological error which leads to flawed thinking and faulty practices. The Market Mind Hypothesis (MMH) thus calls it "mechanical economics": it not only erroneously views but also dangerously treats the economy as a machine, the market as an automaton, and its agents as robots. Inspired by heterodox economic and leading cognitive thinkers, this book offers an alternative paradigm. Central to MMH’s psychophysical worldview is the fact that consumers, investors, and other participants are conscious beings and that their minds’ extension makes consciousness a reality in markets, exemplified by market mood. Specifically, denial of the complex mind~matter exchanges as the essence of markets means the extended mind~body problem is economics’ elephant in the room. The book argues that if mechanical economics is the answer, we have been asking the wrong questions. Moreover, we will not solve our economic predicaments by doubling down on the assumption of rationality, nor by identifying yet another behavioural bias. Instead, scholars and students of economics and finance as well as finance practitioners need to investigate—through cognitive economics—the deep links between markets and minds to better understand both. With a foreword by investment strategist Russell Napier, an intermezzo by neuroscientist and complexity pioneer Scott Kelso, and an afterword by 4E cognition philosopher Julian Kiverstein.

Island Press The Economics of Sustainable Food: Smart Policies
Book SynopsisThe current industrial food system comes at a tremendous economic cost. Dealing with malnutrition, diseases, and environmental degradation costs trillions of dollars, but because that price tag does not show up at the grocery store, it is too often ignored by economists and policymakers. The Economics of Sustainable Food details the true cost of food and illustrates how to transform our broken system, alleviating its severe financial and human burden. The key is smart macroeconomic policy that moves us toward regenerative agriculture and sustainable, healthy diets. The book’s multidisciplinary team of authors lay out detailed fiscal and trade policies, as well as structural reforms, to achieve those goals. Chapters discuss strategies ranging from taxes and spending to education, labour market, health care, and pension reforms, alongside regulation in cases where market incentives are unlikely to work or to work fast enough. The authors carefully consider the different needs of more and less advanced economies, balancing economic development and sustainability goals. Case studies showcase successful strategies from around the world, such as distributing climate resilient grains through subsidised food programmes, taxing foods with a high carbon footprint, and providing schools with matching funds to purchase local produce. In the years ahead, few issues will be more important for individual prosperity and the global economy than the way we produce our food and what food we eat. This roadmap for reform is an invaluable resource to help global policymakers improve countless lives.Table of ContentsPreface, Nicoletta Batini Chapter 1. Book SynopsisPerhaps nowhere else has literature been as conscious a collective endeavor as in China, and China''s survival over three thousand years may owe more to its literary traditions than to its political history. This Very Short Introduction tells the story of Chinese literature from antiquity to the present, focusing on the key role literary culture played in supporting social and political concerns. Embracing traditional Chinese understandings of literature as encompassing history and philosophy as well as poetry and poetics, storytelling, drama, and the novel, Sabina Knight discusses the philosophical foundations of literary culture as well as literature''s power to address historical trauma and cultivate moral and sensual passions. From ancient historical records through the modernization and globalization of Chinese literature, Knight draws on lively examples to underscore the close relationship between ethics and aesthetics, as well as the diversity of Chinese thought. Knight also illuminates the role of elite patronage; the ways literature has served the interests of specific groups; and questions of canonization, language, nationalism, and cross-cultural understanding. The book includes Chinese characters for names, titles, and key terms. Book SynopsisA growing number of states are regulating the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of domestic multinational corporations relating to overseas subsidiaries and suppliers. In this book, Jette Steen Knudsen and Jeremy Moon offer a new framework for analysing government-CSR relations: direct and indirect policies for CSR. Arguing that existing research on CSR regulation fails to address the growing role of the state in shaping the international practices of multinational corporations, the authors provide insight into the CSR issues that are addressed by government policies. Drawing on case studies, they analyse three key examples of CSR: non-financial reporting, ethical trade and tax transparency in extractive industries. In doing so, they propose a new research agenda of government and CSR that is relevant to scholars and graduate students in CSR, sustainability, political economy and economic sociology, as well as policymakers and consultants in international development and trade.Trade Review'You think government is irrelevant for corporate social responsibility? Think again! Based on penetrating case studies, Knudsen and Moon carefully unpick the ways in which national governments facilitate and shape corporate social responsibility to achieve their policy goals at home and abroad. In so doing, they shed new light on general debates about the interaction of public and private authority in global governance and the role of the state in a globalized world. Excellent book!' Philipp Genschel, European University Institute, Florence'It has now been established that CSR, generally defined as companies' voluntary social and environmental initiatives that go beyond legal requirements is a core part of any company's competitive strategy. This book written by two political scientists examines a critical yet neglected piece of this complex puzzle, the role of governments in CSR. In particular, the authors effectively argue and show fascinating evidence that governments structure the opportunities for CSR and act as agents to encourage and exploit CSR for public policy purposes such as by directing public policies to support international CSR organizations. This book is relevant to anyone interested in stakeholder management, CSR, governance and sustainability.' Ruth V. Aguilera, Northeastern University, MassachusettsTable of Contents1.
