Harvard University Press Basic Income
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewA meticulously comprehensive, frequently persuasive accounting of [universal basic income’s] superiority by measures economic, philosophical, and pragmatic. -- Nathan Heller * New Yorker *Basic Income provides a rigorous analysis of the many arguments for and against a universal basic income, offering a road map for future researchers who wish to examine policy alternatives. -- Marc Levinson * Wall Street Journal *Although their goal is utopian, Van Parijs and Vanderborght aim to infuse it with economic and political realism…What Van Parijs and Vanderborght bring to this topic is a deep understanding, an enduring passion, and a disarming optimism. -- Steven Pearlstein * Washington Post *Van Parijs and Vanderborght go deep, focusing exclusively on a universal guaranteed income and examining a range of philosophical, practical and political arguments for and against it. In considered, often enlightening, prose, they delve into John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin and Amartya Sen. They look at a number of alternative schemes; they discuss various objections to guaranteed income programs, including those over cost, free riding, and the possibility of diminished incentives. -- Akash Kapur * Financial Times *Van Parijs and Vanderborght have done the discussion of a universal basic income a great service. They have set forth, clearly and comprehensively, what is probably the best case to be made today for this form of economic and social policy. -- Benjamin M. Friedman * New York Review of Books *What matters—what will lift the heart of every reader of Basic Income—is that Van Parijs and Vanderborght have enlisted the rigor and scruple of first-rate social science in the service of a generous social vision that is at least as old as Saint Ambrose and as up-to-date as Pope Francis. Our sensible and humane descendants—they are bound to be sensible or humane, since humanity would otherwise have long since succumbed to nuclear or environmental catastrophe—will doubtless wonder, with the easy impatience of posterity, what we were waiting for. They may, in fairness to us, decide that we were waiting for books like this. -- George Scialabba * Commonweal *Provid[es] argument after argument as to why [basic income’s] introduction would be ‘economically clever’ and why it is the next logical step to take in a long history of social policies aimed at reducing poverty and inequality. Their proposals are not only clear but also extremely pragmatic…The value of this book is that, more comprehensively than any other study yet, it explains why an obligation-free income for all would be so beneficial, and it also charts how this could be incrementally attained. -- Danny Dorling * Times Higher Education *The book is likely to become a primer on core debates, such as the scheme’s overall feasibility, but its most striking aspect is how the authors make their argument. They justify a basic income not as a tool with which to address inequality, but rather as an ‘instrument of freedom.’ -- Aaron Reeves * Nature *Will be essential for the ongoing debate. -- Ben Collyer * New Scientist *The West is awash these days in populist movements that cloak repressive and inegalitarian agendas. In these troubled times, an unconditional basic income is a beacon: a workable proposal that furthers freedom and equality for all. In this book, two modern pioneers of the UBI make the moral and practical case for endowing everyone with the resources to shape a life of their own choosing. -- Anne Alstott, Yale UniversityThis is a major contribution to the effort to design a realistic program for achieving social justice in the twenty-first century. -- Bruce Ackerman, Yale UniversityThe idea of a universal basic income has been around for quite a while, but has the time for it finally arrived? This superb, closely argued book makes the case for the affirmative answer. While the authors do not hide their sympathies, they approach their subject with a philosopher’s care for ethical justification, a historian’s focus on the antecedents, an economist’s concern for incentives, an empiricist’s respect for evidence, and a practitioner’s attention to feasibility. -- Dani Rodrik, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard UniversityIn this important introduction to the ‘basic income’ initiative—an economic proposal that may radically transform the nature of the modern economy and society—two leading social scientists examine the ethics and economics of the proposed move. This is essential reading for anyone interested in the problems of deprivation and unfreedom that survive even in the richest countries in the world. The remedial reasoning presented by Van Parijs and Vanderborght is powerful as well as highly engaging—a brilliant book. -- Amartya Sen, Harvard UniversityThe concrete proposal for reducing economic inequality makes it a good complement to Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century. This work, while certainly controversial to some readers, is a sober and well-argued study of the basic income concept. -- Lawrence Maxted * Library Journal *Van Parijs and Vanderborght…make a sturdy ethical and philosophical argument for the provision of universal basic income… This thorough, thoughtful study will undoubtedly become a much-cited landmark work on its subject. * Publishers Weekly *At once an intellectual paean to the ideal of a universal basic income, an attempt to win over those who might be skeptical or undecided, and a plea for pragmatism to its supporters. -- David Hearne * Economic Record *

Manchester University Press Casino Capitalism: With an Introduction by
Book SynopsisOriginally released by Basil Blackwell in 1986, and then re-released by Manchester University Press in 1998, Casino capitalism is a cutting-edge discussion of international financial markets, the way they behave and the power they wield. It examines money's power for good as well as its terrible disruptive, destructive power for evil. Money is seen as being far too important to leave to bankers and economists to do with as they think best. The raison d'être of Casino Capitalism is to expose the development of a financial system that has increasingly escaped the calming influences of democratic control. This new edition includes a powerful new introduction provided by Matthew Watson that puts the book it in its proper historical context, as well as identifying its relevance for the modern world. It will have a wide reaching audience, appealing both to academics and students of economics and globalization as well as the general reader with interests in capitalism and economic history.Table of ContentsIntroduction – Matthew Watson1. MIT Press Ltd Complexity and Evolution
Book SynopsisAn exploration of how approaches that draw on evolutionary theory and complexity science can advance our understanding of economics. Two widely heralded yet contested approaches to economics have emerged in recent years: one emphasizes evolutionary theory in terms of individuals and institutions; the other views economies as complex adaptive systems. In this book, leading scholars examine these two bodies of theory, exploring their possible impact on economics. Relevant concepts from evolutionary theory drawn on by the contributors include the distinction between proximate and ultimate causation, multilevel selection, cultural change as an evolutionary process, and human psychology as a product of gene-culture coevolution. Applicable ideas from complexity theory include self-organization, fractals, chaos theory, sensitive dependence, basins of attraction, and path dependence. The contributors discuss a synthesis of complexity and evolutionary approaches and the challeng

Farrar, Straus & Giroux Inc Milton Friedman
Book SynopsisAn Economist Best Book of 2023 One of The New York Times? 33 Nonfiction Books to Read This Fall Named a most anticipated fall book by the Chicago Tribune and Bloomberg Finalist for the 2024 Hayek Book Prize?Wherever you sit on the political spectrum, there?s a lot to learn from this book. More than a biography of one controversial person, it?s an intellectual history of twentieth-century economic thought.? ?Greg Rosalesky, NPR?s Planet Money The first full biography of America?s most renowned economist.Milton Friedman was, alongside John Maynard Keynes, the most influential economist of the twentieth century. His work was instrumental in the turn toward free markets that defined the 1980s, and his full-throated defenses of capitalism and freedom resonated with audiences around the world. It?s no wonder the last decades of the twentieth century have been called ?the Age of Friedman??or that analysts have sought to hold him responsible for both the rising prosperity and the social ills of recent times. In Milton Friedman, the first full biography to employ archival sources, the historian Jennifer Burns tells Friedman?s extraordinary story with the nuance it deserves. She provides lucid and lively context for his groundbreaking work on everything from why dentists earn less than doctors, to the vital importance of the money supply, to inflation and the limits of government planning and stimulus. She traces Friedman?s long-standing collaborations with women, including the economist Anna Schwartz; his complex relationships with powerful figures such as the Federal Reserve chairman Arthur Burns and the Treasury secretary George Shultz; and his direct interventions in policymaking at the highest levels. Most of all, Burns explores Friedman?s key role in creating a new economic vision and a modern American conservatism. The result is a revelatory biography of America?s first neoliberal?and perhaps its last great conservative.

Liberty Fund Inc Tyranny Unmasked
Book SynopsisJohn Taylor of Caroline (1753-1824) was one of the foremost philosophers of the States'' rights Jeffersonians of the early national period. In keeping with his lifelong mission as a minority man, John Taylor wrote Tyranny Unmasked not only to assault the protective tariff and the mercantilist policies of the times but also to examine general principles in relation to commerce, political economy, and a free government. Originally published in 1822, it is the only major work of Taylor''s that has never before been reprinted. As an early discussion of the principles of governmental power and their relationship to political economy and liberty, Tyranny Unmasked is an important primary source in the study of American history and political thought.

Liberty Fund Inc Morals of Markets Related Essays
Book SynopsisAlthough the market economy is not as unpopular now as when Acton wrote THE MORALS OF MARKETS, the morality of buying and selling has long bothered man''s conscience. Defenses of capitalism often establish its efficiency or rely on a that is the way human nature is anyway argument. This book asserts that a free market is a necessary condition for the pursuit of moral excellence. Its analysis of the relation between capitalism and moral virtue has not been superseded. The demise of Marxism and the moral bankruptcy of socialism throughout the world do not end the debate over capitalism. Acton''s book is distinctive in discussing the ''morals of markets'' in a way that forms an essential addition -- often missing -- to the case to be made for free markets.

Liberty Fund Inc Externalities Public Expenditure Theory
Book SynopsisIn his foreword, Geoffrey Brennan states, The papers in this volume represent a coherent set of pieces focused on aspects of public-expenditure theory and constitute all of Buchanan''s papers in this area. Buchanan''s work on the subject of what governments should do and his insistence on Knut Wicksell''s ideal that taxation and public expenditure be integrated topics have contributed significantly to the current thinking of most economists on the topic. Geoffrey Brennan summarises Buchanan''s central themes in this way, There are two messages that emerge from this work: one is that a proper sense of the extent of market failure, rather than its mere presence, is relevant in all cases; the other is that ''correcting'' for such market failure is often a complex multidimensional business not captured by direct public provision at zero price and not necessarily involving expansion of market output. The twenty-nine papers represented in this volume are grouped into these major subject cate

Book SynopsisThis final volume (save for the Index) in Liberty Fund''s ''The Collected Works of James M Buchanan'' acquaints us most intimately with the man himself. Included are essays and short pieces that shed light on Buchanan''s view of the world. Ranging from personal reflections on the art and science of economics, to restatements of his central themes and reminiscences of his encounters and collaborations with other great thinkers, this volume presents James Buchanan as a multidimensional human being, not just as a great economic and political thinker. The thirty-three pieces collected in IDEAS, PERSONS, AND EVENTS are grouped into these categories: autobiographical and personal reflections; reflections on fellow political economists; political economy in the post-socialist century; reform without romance. As Hartmut Kliemt states in his foreword, The personal and the theoretical are often inseparably intertwined in the essays of this volume... As a case in point, consider James Buchanan''s account of his relationship to Frank Knight. This account not only sheds some interesting light on the personal element in the development of science, it also offers some new perspectives on the concept of the ''relatively absolute absolutes'', which has been so central to Buchanan''s thinking in general.

Book SynopsisLiberty Fund is proud to present, in two volumes, ''The Collected Works of Armen A Alchian'', bringing together Alchian''s most influential essays, articles, editorials, and lectures to provide a comprehensive record of his thinking on a broad range of topics in economics. As various and as specific as some of this collection''s topics are, they are unified, as editor Daniel K Benjamin writes, by both a coherent methodology for doing economics, and a view of the world that celebrates the importance of individual liberty. Benjamin goes on to state that, in Alchian''s view, the purpose of theory is never theory in and of itself; it is instead to help individuals understand the world around them.

Manne is one of the founding scholars of law and economics as a discipline. This three-volume collection includes articles, reviews, and books from more than four decades, featuring Wall Street in Transition, which redefined the commonly held view of the corporate firm. Volume 2, Insider Trading, uses Manne''s ground-breaking Insider Trading and the Stock Market as a framework for many of Manne''s innovative contributions to the field, as well as a fresh context for understanding the complex world of corporate law and securities regulation. Volume 3, Liberty and Freedom in the Economic Ordering of Society, includes selections exploring Manne''s thoughts on corporate social responsibility, on the regulation of capital markets and securities offerings, especially as examined in Wall Street in Transition, on the role of the modern university, and on the relationship among law, regulation, and the free market.

Book SynopsisJosiah Tucker (17131799) was one of the foremost thinkers of eighteenth-century England in the fields of economics, international relations, political theory, and imperialism. He shared the opinion, prevalent in his day, that Great Britain was underpopulated and observed with regret the immigration to America, believing that the colonies brought Britain no benefits. He thought instead that colonies were too costly to be beneficial, and, as early as 1749, he asserted that the American colonies would seek independence as soon as they no longer needed Great Britains assistance. He is one of the few men in England who consistently wrote and preached that the separation of the colonies would spell the ruin of England. Born of Welsh peasant stock in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, Tucker was educated at St. Johns College, Oxford, and became a curate and rector successively at St. Stephens Church in Bristol. This led him to take considerable interest in politics and trade, as Bristol was second o

Book SynopsisE G West brings to life Adam Smith''s first years in the bustling Scottish seaport of Kirkcaldy (and recounts Smith''s brief kidnapping, as a baby, by gypsies). We follow young Smith as a student, watch his thought develop as Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow, and enjoy with him the hospitality of David Hume, the Parisian literary salons, Johnson, Burke, Gibbon, and other giants of the era. West gives us a masterful summary of ''The Wealth of Nations''. Even more significant, West restores to eminence an earlier work of Smith''s, ''The Theory of Moral Sentiments''. If The Wealth of Nations had never been written, he asserts, this previous work would have earned for him a prominent place in intellectual history. West takes particular delight in using ''The Theory of Moral Sentiments'' to rebut Marx''s assumptions about laissez-faire capitalism.
