    1 in stock

Book Synopsis"A reader's first impression on leafing through this book is of the large number of graphs and diagrams, used to illustrate shapes of distributions...and to show real data examples in various ways. A closer reading reveals a nice mix of theory and applications, with the copious graphical illustrations alluded to. Such a mixture is of course dear to the heart of the applied probabilist/statistician, and should impress even the most ardent theorists." --MATHEMATICAL REVIEWSTrade ReviewFrom the reviews: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN STATISTICAL ASSOCIATION "…excellent, comprehensive treatise on the subject of extremal events modeling. The authors have responded well to the demands of extreme value practitioners for such a text. Although it was clearly and admittedly motivated by practical questions of workers in finance, insurance, and reinsurance, [the book] contains the mathematical rigor and generality that will interest the extreme value theoretician…An understanding of modes of convergence, specifically weak convergence, is essential to fully appreciate the text, but the authors’ intuitive writing style makes most of the basic ideas accessible even to the uninitiated…The authors do an excellent job of organizing these topics and also provide a very useful 20-page ‘Reader Guidelines’ section…[the book] makes an excellent contribution to unifying important concepts in extreme value theory and modeling of extremal events. Aside from its obvious use as a reference for practitioners and theoreticians alike, this text may be used to teach a graduate-level course in mathematical finance or a special topics course in stochastic processes with or without a financial emphasis…As the authors point out this may not be the kind of book that you want to tackle form cover to cover initially, but it is my bet you will eventually discover that you have done just that as you repeatedly reference this hefty volume throughout the years." MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS/MATHSCINET DATABASE "A reader's first impression on leafing through this book is of the large number of graphs and diagrams, used to illustrate shapes of distributions, to plot sample paths of various processes and to show real data examples in various ways. A closer reading reveals a nice mix of theory and applications, with the copious graphical illustrations alluded to. Such a mixture is of course dear to the heart of the applied probabilist/statistician, and should impress even the most ardent theorists with the range of applications of the subject. While there are a number of books available which cover most of the topics herein, I know of none which presents such a range of theory and applications of extremal processes in one volume, at a level easily understood by users of the methodology. I highly recommend the book to all who work in the area, or in related areas. (...) The combination of skills and expertise of the three authors of this book is impressive. Their reading covers not only the traditional and classical works in the area but a great deal of the modern development, too. (They give 646 references to books and articles in the literature.) Their book concludes with copious appendices setting out the basic probability theory and some of the regular variation theory required for understanding the rest of the development. In summary, this is a worthwhile book in an extremely important area." SIAM REVIEWS "(...) This book impresses me as being exceptionally well written, scholarly beyond question, more than a little daunting, and likely to become a classic in its field."KWANTITIEWE METHODEN "The book is the first in the area that strikes a proper balance between mathematical rigor and scope (...) and the statistically-oriented applications for the practitioner."EXTREMES "(...) the indispensable starting point for anyone interested in contemporary applications and extensions of classical EVT." MATHEMATICS TODAY "This is an encyclopedic handbook of theory and statistical praxis, of great value to actuaries and statisticians in the fields concerned, which gives an up to date picture of this fast developing field, and at the same time a useful and well motivated text book for those who need a guide for entering the area without getting lost either in pure theory or messy practice."ASTIN BULLETIN "Given the nature of the subject (...) the book is easy to read.(...) The narrative style is marvellous, invariably connecting theoretical concepts to the real world objects they are supposed to describe, (...)." RISKBOOK.COM "There are a number of texts available on Extreme Value Theory (EVT). This is the essential one to read. It is authoritative and extremely well written…A nice feature of Embrechts et al is an opening 20-page ‘reader guideline’ that gives an overview of the material before the start of the main text." • Spatial Econometrics: Methods and Models

Springer Spatial Econometrics: Methods and Models

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSpatial econometrics deals with spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity, critical aspects of the data used by regional scientists. These characteristics may cause standard econometric techniques to become inappropriate. In this book, I combine several recent research results to construct a comprehensive approach to the incorporation of spatial effects in econometrics. My primary focus is to demonstrate how these spatial effects can be considered as special cases of general frameworks in standard econometrics, and to outline how they necessitate a separate set of methods and techniques, encompassed within the field of spatial econometrics. My viewpoint differs from that taken in the discussion of spatial autocorrelation in spatial statistics - e.g., most recently by Cliff and Ord (1981) and Upton and Fingleton (1985) - in that I am mostly concerned with the relevance of spatial effects on model specification, estimation and other inference, in what I caIl a model-driven approach, as opposed to a data-driven approach in spatial statistics. I attempt to combine a rigorous econometric perspective with a comprehensive treatment of methodological issues in spatial analysis.Trade Review`This book is a very useful and significant contribution to the spatial analysis literature ... Book SynopsisThe United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is a founding member of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development, which is an international, multi-stakeholder initiative to improve the availability and quality of ICT data and indicators. One of its key achievements is the development of a core list of ICT indicators for the production of internationally comparable statistics. This list was first endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission at its 38th session in March 2007 and has since been updated regularly. The Commission encouraged countries to use that list in their data collection programmes; a first version of the Manual for the Production of Statistics on the Information Economy was published at the end of 2007. An updated version was published in 2009. The current edition, entitled Manual for the Production of Statistics on the Digital Economy, was prepared to reflect the many changes that have taken place in the past decade in terms of access and use of ICTs. Compared to earlier versions, it expands the coverage of the measurement of e-commerce, trade in ICT services and trade in ICT-enabled (or digitally delivered) services. It contains more model questionnaires and reflects the most recent revisions of the Partnership's list of core ICT indicators. The Manual is intended to guide statisticians from developing countries through all the steps involved in the production and dissemination of statistics related to e-commerce and the digital economy

United Nations State of commodity dependence 2023

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA country is export commodity-dependent (from now on 'commodity dependent') when its exports are heavily concentrated on primary commodities. The source of commodity dependence can be linked to different persistent or even structural conditions of a country such as its resource endowment and factor composition, institutionality, geographic situation, history and others. In this document, we follow past UNCTAD practice by considering UNCTAD member States to be commodity dependent if more than 60 per cent of its merchandise export value comes from commodities. It is important to monitor and analyze the evolution of commodity dependence, as the latter can have negative implications for a country's welfare and development. This document is divided into two parts. The first one is dedicated to identifying and characterizing commodity-dependent countries, as well as discussing the recent evolution of commodity prices, commodity export value and the net asset position of these countries. The second part is dedicated to country-specific commodity dependence profiles that also include important economic and social statistics

  • The Mahalanobis Growth Model: A Macrodynamics

Springer Verlag, Singapore The Mahalanobis Growth Model: A Macrodynamics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides an analytical and computational approach to solving and simulating the Mahalanobis model and the papers surrounding it. The book comes up, perhaps for the first time, with a holistic examination of an important growth model that emerged out of India in the 1950s. It contains detailed derivations of the Mahalanobis model and the several critiques and extensions surrounding it with an organized synthesis of the main results. Computationally, the book simulates the model and its many variants, thus making it accessible to a wider audience. Advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the fields of Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics will gain immensely from understanding both the mathematical aspects as well as the computational aspects of the Mahalanobis model. In the absence of a single 'go-to' source on all aspects of the model -- analytical and computational -- this book is a definitive volume on the Mahalanobis model that has all the derivations of all the papers surrounding the model, its dissents and critiques, and extensions as in the wage goods model suggested by Vakil and Brahmananda. Trade Review“The book The Mahalanobis Growth Model: A Macrodynamics Approach by Ghate, Gopalakrishnan, and Grover (G3) is a labor of love, a fitting intellectual tribute to PCM’s growth models, which too were labors of love designed to concretize ideals of development planning for India’s Five-Year Plans. … Indian economics undergraduates will read this book, work through the math, digest the economic intuition, and come away with a sense of awe for PCM. They will come to appreciate … .” (Joydeep Bhattacharya, Indian Economic Review, Vol. 58 (1), 2023)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Overview of the 2 Sector Mahalanobis Model- Simulations in Matlab Chapter 2: Critiques of the 2 Sector Mahalanobis Model - The Bronfenbrenner Critique - The Ezekiel Critique - The Bettelheim Critique - The JBS Haldane Critique - The Raj and Sen Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 3: A Stochastic Version of the 2 Sector Mahalanobis Model - Outline of the Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 4: Open Economy Extensions of the 2-sector Mahalanobis Model - The Harris Model - The Ezekiel Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 5: Overview of the 4 Sector Mahalanobis Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 6: Critiques of the 4 Sector Mahalanobis Model - The Komiya Critique - Observations by Tsuru - The Shenoy Dissent - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 7: The Wage Good Model - An Analytical Framework – The Brahmananda and Vakil Model – by MJ Manohar Rao - Simulations in Matlab

Book SynopsisThis book gives a detailed mathematical and statistical analysis of the cointegrated vector autoregresive model. This model had gained popularity because it can at the same time capture the short-run dynamic properties as well as the long-run equilibrium behaviour of many non-stationary time series. It also allows relevant economic questions to be formulated in a consistent statistical framework.Part I of the book is planned so that it can be used by those who want to apply the methods without going into too much detail about the probability theory. The main emphasis is on the derivation of estimators and test statistics through a consistent use of the Guassian likelihood function. It is shown that many different models can be formulated within the framework of the autoregressive model and the interpretation of these models is discussed in detail. In particular, models involving restrictions on the cointegration vectors and the adjustment coefficients are discussed, as well as the role
