  • Nuclear Planetary Science: Planetary Science

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Nuclear Planetary Science: Planetary Science

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNuclear planetary science has come to play an important role in our understanding of the origin and evolution of the planetary bodies in our solar system. A newly established branch of planetary science, its study aids in humankind's exploration of the present states of the structures of various planetary bodies (including the Earth), their atmospheres and their satellites, as well as small celestial bodies (e.g. asteroids), through direct observation. Knowing the elemental composition of the planetary bodies is essential in order to understand the formation and evolution of planetary bodies — just as important as it is to know the mass, radius, density and orbit of the celestial body.Suitable for students and specialists interested in the much wider field of Earth and Planetary Science, topics related to the planets and asteroids in the solar system are dealt with in this book. Techniques related to nuclear planetary science's nuclear cosmochemical and geological methods are also covered in this book.

  • Going Underground: The Science And History Of

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Going Underground: The Science And History Of

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book follows the historical trail by which humanity has determined the shape and internal structure of the Earth. It is a story that bears on aspects of the history of science, the history of philosophy and the history of mathematics. At the heart of the narrative is the important philosophical practice of performing thought experiments — that is, the art of considering an idealized experiment in the mind. This powerful technique has been used by all the great historical practitioners of science and mathematics, and this book looks specifically at the long history of considering what would happen if an object could be dropped into a tunnel that cuts all the way through the Earth's interior. Indeed, the story begins with a historical whodunit, tracing back through the historical literature the origins of what is now a classic, textbook problem in simple harmonic motion.

  • Mine Waste Management in China: Recent Development

Springer Verlag, Singapore Mine Waste Management in China: Recent Development

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book introduces recent development of technologies for mine waste management in China. For hard rock mines, the main mine wastes are tailings, and the tailings can be disposed above-ground and/or underground. The technology of consolidated tailings stockpile (CTS) that disposes tailings above-ground is introduced, and the application of this technology is also demonstrated. Besides, the technology of cemented tailings (or paste) backfill (CTB or CPB) which deals with tailings underground is also discussed. The properties of CTB materials and the utilization of CTB technology are described and analyzed. For coal mines, the main mine wastes are coal gangue and fly ash. The technology of cemented coal gangue-fly ash backfill (CGFB) that manages coal mine waste underground is presented. The THMC coupling properties of CGFB materials are investigated, which can contribute to a better design of stable, durable and environmentally friendly CGFB mixtures. The application of CGFB technology in a coal mine is also presented. This book, which systematically reviews and discusses the development of mine waste management technologies in China, is expected to provide readers comprehensive information about mine waste management.Table of ContentsTraditional Treatment of Mine Waste.- Solutions for Surface Disposal of Mine Tailings.- Case Study of Surface Consolidated Tailings Stockpile.- Case Study of Surface Cemented Tailings Discharge.- Solutions for Underground Placement of Mine Tailings.- Properties of Cemented Tailings Backfill.- Case Study of Cemented Tailings Backfill.- Solutions for Underground Placement of Coal Mine Waste.- Properties of Cemented Coal Gangue-Fly Ash Backfill.- Case Study of Cemented Coal Gangue-Fly Ash Backfill.

  • Earth As A Cradle For Life, The: The Origin,

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Earth As A Cradle For Life, The: The Origin,

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Earth as a Cradle for Life aims to fill the gap between readers who have a strong and informed scientific interest in the environment (but no access to the journal literature), and their desire for a basic understanding of the environment. It provides a comprehensive account, and requires no advanced mathematical skills. It will also satisfy a need for a textbook on fundamental science for students in tertiary environmental science courses that may otherwise neglect the underlying basis of their subject. The Earth as a Cradle takes a step back from common perceptions of the environment, and presents a new fundamental perspective. It draws attention to observations that have been neglected or discounted for reasons the authors found invalid, and which allow a more coherent account of the environment than is possible without them.Misunderstandings about the environment are common, even in the scientific community. They arise in part from the multi-disciplinary nature of the subject and the difficulty in keeping all relevant observations in mind and assessing their validity. These misunderstandings are often consequences of the band-wagon effect: when an idea is reinforced by repeated quotation and becomes difficult to contradict even when it is in obvious conflict with observations. This is especially so in a subject with strong media interest and conflicting commercial interests — and Cradle sweeps these considerations aside and presents a new environmental scenario. This book draws on several decades of research by the authors on fundamental Earth science, and presents probing insights on environmental questions that are not widely recognized — even in the professional community. For this reason it will become a landmark in the environmental science and Earth science literature.Table of ContentsPhysical and Astronomical Foundations: "The Age of the Earth as an Abode Fitted for Life" (Lord Kelvin, 1899); Rotation, Tides and the Moon; The Variable Sun and Other Astronomical Effects; The Magnetic Field; The Evolving Earth: Internal Heat and the Evolution of the Earth; The Oceans; Planetary Atmospheres and the Appearance of Free Oxygen; Thermal Balance, the Greenhouse Effect and Sea Level; Environmental Crises and Mass Extinctions of Species; Stability of the Environment; Inorganic Mineral Deposits as Products of an Evolving Environment; Fossil Fuels, Buried Carbon and Photosynthetic Oxygen; Human Influences: Effects of Fossil Fuel Use; A Comparison of Human Energy Use with Natural Dissipations; The Cradle is Rocking; A Summary of Salient Conclusions.

  • Horizons in Earth Science Research. Volume 24

Nova Science Publishers Inc Horizons in Earth Science Research. Volume 24

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume includes six chapters in earth science research. Chapter One explores the importance of thermodynamics and systems theory in terms of understanding the evolution, ecology and sustainability of the Biosphere. Chapter Two presents new data on variations of the ?13C and ?15N values in natural plant species and in the rhizosphere soil. Based on experimental results, this chapter also tries to better understand the large and often unexplained variability of the C and N isotope ratios in the environment. Chapter Three details the energy and trace elements of bioaccumulation with the biomass of miscanthus grown on different kinds of technosols. Chapter Four provides characteristics of a khondalitic aquifer. Chapter Five discusses a numerical simulation of the tsunami generated by a potential collapse and submarine landslide in La Palma (Canary Islands) after the September 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption. This chapter also compares the eruption to the Late Bronze Age eruption of Santorini. Lastly, Chapter Six examines the upper cretaceous succession of the Zagros basin.
