  • Green Homes and Workplaces

The Energy and Resources Institute, TERI Green Homes and Workplaces

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIf it's too hot, you switch on a fan. If it's cold, you turn on a room heater. We do this unthinkingly, and it never occurs to us that had the building itself been designed differently, neither may have been necessary. Amory Lovins's home high up in the mountains in Colorado uses no grid-supplied electricity and yet is warm enough to grow bananas and comfortable 24/7 all the year round. It all comes to wise building design. Living in a hot and dry climate? You need thick walls and shaded windows. Living along a coast? The warm and moist climate means you need ample ventilation and thin walls. These are obvious solutions but architects have more tricks up their sleeves. After having helped many buildings to being certifiably green', the authors of this book explain what sustainable buildings are and how to ensure that our homes and workplaces are not only thermally comfortable' but well-lit and well-ventilated as well. But I have no plans to build a new home or I live in a rented flat, you may say. Never mind; the book offers some useful info to you as well. For example, do not set your AC too low: approximately 27 C is good enough, and you will save much more. What sets Green Homes and Workplaces apart from other books is the simple and clear explanations of fundamentals and liberal use of illustrations.

Fagbokforlaget Utopia Revisited: Towards a Carbon-Neutral

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book summarises eight years of research, evaluation, and hands-on experience in developing Brøset as a future carbon-neutral settlement. The project has from the outset tried to tackle one of the most burning questions of our time: how to reconcile the increasingly alarming messages from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with everyday practices in modern societies. These include transport, energy, food, housing, and the general consumption of products and services following in the wake of all affluent societies. The overall vision for Brøset is to demonstrate how a new urban district can be planned in accordance with the IPCC''s 2C target and thereby show the way towards a carbon-neutral society. In order to accomplish this very ambitious goal, it is necessary for cultural, social, and physical structures to work together. Herein lies the biggest challenge of the Brøset project and other initiatives that aim to close the gap between rhetoric and reality in this field.

  • From Where Life Flows: The Local Knowledge &

Tapir Academic Press From Where Life Flows: The Local Knowledge &

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhilst a large number of foreign and state initiated water management systems have failed for various reasons, locally developed water harvesting systems have proven their viability by surviving for hundreds of years. Whilst there has to be some recognition of the geographical limits and some questions asked about the quality of these water supplies, even with these detractors accounted for these systems often remain superior to those imposed by political and private interests, not only in terms of their reliability, but also in terms of their flexibility and more equitable control. This book aims to offer a closer look at local flexible strategies for securing water resources under demanding climatic conditions and during environmental changes. The research dealt with here aims to identify a range of initiatives that have been created by and for members of indigenous communities to address such challenges, such as traditional structures for collecting run-off and rainwater. It poses the questions: How have these strategies been formed and made to operate? What positive and negative lessons can be learned from the interplay between local knowledge, subsistence strategies, and the influx of knowledge and initiatives from the outside? As well as describing the function and social significance of water harvesting systems, a further aim of this book is to highlight the wider political and economic context of local knowledge about water harvesting and its uses, and the impact of contrasting management strategies on social development in the local communities involved. Water harvesting and irrigation systems form an important part of the vast knowledge that indigenous and local populations have of their natural environment. Such knowledge is embedded within complex social organisations, and forms the basis of both formal and important non-formal social networks. Indeed, together with the management of land, the management of water resources frequently provides the basis of social institutions and relationships to which ideas of belonging and community membership are tied. Indeed, water resources, along with other natural resources, comprise not only a vital element of subsistence, but also a vital field of social and political inter-action and practice.

Tapir Academic Press GIS: The Geographic Language of Our Age

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisFew textbooks offer a comprehensive overview of geographic information systems (GIS) today. The literature common in academic circles is highly technical and pays little attention to the role GIS plays, and has played, as a tool in the planning and shaping of society and the world around us. The authors of this book feel strongly about the potential inherent in the concepts and methodologies that make up a geographic information system. Similarly, the authors are aware of the limitations of the uniformly technical and structural approach that dominates discussions about GIS in many professional circles. The authors'' ambition with this book is to guide the reader on an educational, easy-to-understand journey that introduces the concepts and methodologies that lie behind today''s geographic information systems. Their goal is thus to make GIS both more familiar and relevant to a far broader section of the professional circles who plan, organise and shape our surroundings.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe joint management of Norway and Russia in the Barents Sea has been successful in conserving the living marine resources and is a major factor contributing to the present rich fisheries in the area. The basis for this conservation success is scientific research, which, to a large extent, has been conducted through a long-lasting co-operation between Russian and Norwegian scientists that has expanded greatly over the past half century. Based on joint Russian-Norwegian authorships, this monumental book celebrates the scientific co-operation by reflecting on the historical development and the scientific methods applied, and by offering a comprehensive presentation of the vast knowledge of the Barents Sea resources and ecosystem obtained through these co-operative efforts.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisOver the last few decades, various international and cross-cultural partnerships have been established, often with impressive speed, to facilitate the protection of natural resources and the environment. However, many problems exist within these partnerships: international declarations and conventions are not binding in the same ways as national laws; the motivations behind the involvement of a country or culture are not always easy to identify and are often understood differently in different places; environmental obligations are often interpreted and implemented differently in different places; and common aims are often not mutual at all. These difficulties surrounding the establishment and implementation of workable international and cross-cultural environmental policies form the basis of this book.

  • How to Save Our World: The Ultimate Spiritual

Aspekt B.V., Uitgeverij How to Save Our World: The Ultimate Spiritual

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisMany books have been written about how we might save life on Earth. Some people believe that saving the Earth will cost 125 billion dollars while others claim that 1000 billion dollars will not be enough to achieve that goal. The solution as described in this book will not cost a penny! Indeed, all people will get the possibility for enlarging inner wisdom and material welfare. Forming a better future requires a different way of thinking, a different way of living together. That is the message of this book. On scrutinising the history of the world, one may discover a number of remarkable issues which are typical for human development. It determines the state of affairs in our present society and reveals a number of serious problems putting our entire world at risk. This situation is giving rise to a number of possible future scenarios which do not seem to be all that bright and shining. Are we going to let this happen? Does mankind want to evolve like plants and animals or do we want to show that we are intelligent creatures determined to shape our own future? Look at the positive developments in our current society and look at the results a spiritual society may offer. The spiritual society may provide different objectives and principles and might genuinely solve problems. Thus, it might be a world of love in which people strive to be in balance with our planet as well as with the universe. This ideal future might become a real world in which the term ''together'' refers to warm human values instead of purely economic ones. Your future, our world?

Based on primary research, Energy Economics and the Environment integrates a network of diverse disciplines to provide a theoretical and practical understanding of the constantly neglected challenges associated with conservation, preservation and sustainability of environment and energy. It highlights the issues and prospects in safeguarding environmental biodiversity and renewable energy efficiency, ecosystem chains and human living standards. Book SynopsisA first of its kind in India, the book addresses the fundamental questions of environmental concern and enquires into the complex patterns of human–nature interaction within the discipline of environmental history in India. This book delves into history to examine a number of critical themes, such as waterbodies and water, forests, land use, wildlife and the issue of the history of climate in India. It focuses on the methodological and historiographical aspects of environmental history and raises new questions to open up new windows leading to fresh research questions. The book argues that environmental history would serve as an important gateway to the history of the human–nature relationship, for example, exploring the role of water history would help in understanding the present context of water crisis in Indian cities. Critical Themes in Environmental History of India is a powerful reminder of the fact that in the context of Indian history it is now necessary to listen to the voice of nature more carefully.Table of ContentsForeword - Arvind P.
