Suzeteo Enterprises It Can't Happen Here
Book SynopsisIt Can''t Happen Here. Are we so sure? Many would suggest that it certainly could happen ''here,'' which is precisely the point that Sinclair Lewis was making when he wrote this book in 1935. This, incidentally, was still a few years before the worst fears would unfold in Germany, giving the book a somewhat prophetic flair. Based on the American Democrat, Huey Long, it has been, despite that, often been associated with ''right wing'' movements. This is ironic, as only a few years later it would be the Democrat FDR that would put American-Japanese citizens into concentration camps using ''emergency powers,'' much as the book''s protagonist, Berzelius Windrip, was portrayed as doing, after beating FDR in 1936. In case you miss the irony: the real-life FDR actually did what the fictional Windrip was portrayed as doing! The long history of abandoning civil rights using emergency powers was reprised more recently during the COVID pandemic, when Western nations and individual US states, ostensibly ''democracies,'' nonetheless invoked emergency powers to enact all sorts of authoritarian measures. Thus, when pondering whether or not ''it can happen here'' (which all assume it can) we are perhaps left with a more intriguing question: Why hasn''t it happened here? And then, once this has been answered, work to ensure that the factors that have prevented a full-blown authoritarian regime from materializing in the United States are retained and strengthened.

Vintage Publishing Animal Farm
Book SynopsisTHE AUTHORATITIVE TEXT "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. "Mr Jones, the owner of Manor Farm, is a lazy drunk. The animals decide to overthrow him in a revolution that will allow them to run the farm, liberating themselves and creating a new life of equality and freedom. But they have underestimated the pigs. Napoleon and Snowball form an elite and take control for themselves, and the tyranny of the farmer is replaced with another kind of control leaving the animals again subject to a ruthless and cruel authority. Imagined only as Orwell could, this powerful fable is instilled with humour and an underlying urgency that makes this one of the most prescient warnings ever written. And as the drumbeat of rebellion gets ever closer Brea must make the fatal choice between love and loyalty while Hanna has to find a way to make peace with the past.USA Today bestselling author Judy Leigh writing as Elena Collins, brings you this heart-breaking and unforgettable timeslip novel, perfect for fans of Barbara Erskine, Diana Gabaldon and Louise Douglas.Praise for Elena Collins:'Very highly recommended.’ Louise Douglas'The Lady of The Loch held me spellbound from the first page to the last. With two storylines beautifully woven together to create a seamless tale of love, loss, betrayal and, above all, hope, it’s a must-read. Collins’s detailed knowledge of the period trickles through the tale wrapping the reader in a vivid shifting world as it moves between the 14th century and present day. Cleverly researched and exquisitely written, The Lady of The Loch is a timeless story of hope, family and love. I loved it.' Alexandra WalshWhat readers are saying about Elena Collins:'Loved this book, didn't want it to end well worth 5 stars. I will definitely read more books by this author.I love the duel story line and this author writes a lot like my other favorite author Barbara Erskine.''I really enjoyed The Witches Tree also written by Elena Collins ... and The Lady of the Loch was just simply amazing! The characters will stay with me for a long time..and that's a sign of a great book!''This was fabulous, I couldn’t put it down, read in two days and was so sorry that I’d finished it! Loved her first book but this was something else, I was totally gripped, beautiful story and I actually felt like I was back in 1307, best book I’ve read in a long time, hope I don’t have to wait too long for the next one.''This was such an evocative and atmospheric story, it was truly engrossing to the point that on a very sleepless night I ended up reading until 4am to finish the book, because I was thinking about it so much! I loved being whisked away to Scotland in 1307, and enjoyed the way the story came full circle in the present day.'

Book SynopsisTo uncover the truth, you must risk everythingWhen Carey Tews retired from Les Coureurs - the clandestine organisation of high-risk smugglers - she swore she'd never go back. Her cover in Hungary was blown, and even if she could have returned, she wouldn't. That is, until an old friend and lover is found dead in mysterious circumstances.Back for one last job in a Europe fractured into a hundred tiny principalities, with civil unrest and political instability the norm, she must navigate local authorities, rogue operatives and Russian spies. What she doesn't know is that the investigation will take her to places she couldn't even imagine. Trade Review‘A spellbinding novel of intrigue and paranoia.’ -- The Guardian * The Guardian *Europe in Autumn is the work of a consummate storyteller and combines great characters, a cracking central idea, and a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Excellent.--Eric Brown, author of Helix‘High-octane thrills, mind-twisting concepts, smart and engaging storytelling.’ -- Locus * Locus *"Dave Hutchinson's Europe in Autumn, presents a near-future Europe fractured into hundreds of nations or "polities", each with its own strictly controlled border. The Les Coureurs des Bois is a shady organisation which delivers packages, and sometimes people, across these borders. Estonian chef Rudi, working in Krakow when the novel opens, is drawn into the organisation and finds himself embroiled in ever more complex situations. Hutchinson draws a convincing picture of a fragmented continent - he's especially good at describing the industrial wasteland of the former Poland - as Rudi finds his life under threat. Unable to trust anyone, especially Les Coureurs, Rudi attempts to work out who wants him dead, and why. The author's authoritative prose, intimate knowledge of eastern Europe, and his fusion of Kafka with Len Deighton, combine to create a spellbinding novel of intrigue and paranoia." -- The Guardian‘An awesome concoction of sci-fi and spies.’ -- Tor.com * Tor.com *A clever, complicated tale of dirty tricks, spies and politics * The Guardian *

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC We Are Satellites
Book SynopsisFrom award-winning author Sarah Pinsker comes a novel about one family and the technology that divides them. Get one – or get left behind. Val and Julie just want what's best for their kids, David and Sophie. So when David comes home from school begging for a new brain implant to help with his studies, they're torn. Julie grew up poor and knows what it's like to be the only kid in school without the new technology, but Val is terrified by the risks and the implications. Soon, everyone at Julie's work has the implant and she's struggling to keep pace. It's clear that she'll have to get one too if she's not to be left behind. Before long, Val and Sophie are the only two in the family without the device, and part of an ever-shrinking minority in their town. With government subsidies and no apparent downside, why would anyone refuse? But Sophie can't shake the feeling that something sinister is going on behind the scenes and she's going to do whatever it takes to find out – even if it pits her against a powerful tech company and the people she loves most.Trade ReviewPinsker's newest is a carefully crafted sci-fi web stretched over an intensely human core... Issues of discrimination, ableism, transparency, and more weave together to create an intricately told cautionary tale' * Booklist (starred review) *A fascinating novel that explores how technologies can transform family dynamics * BuzzFeed *Pinsker's meticulous research and melodious prose bring readers to the heart of a family and the challenges of societal expectations, technology, and the desire to advance without fully understanding the consequences * Library Journal (starred review) *A compassionate, richly textured look at how one ordinary family deals with the next wave in productivity technology... Best of all, the novel's futuristic premise feels as realistic and lived-in as its characters' love for one another' -- Annalee NewitzA deeply empathetic story of a family struggling with everyday impossibilities. We Are Satellites will drill a tiny – entirely painless – aperture in the side of your skull, snake its way inside, and rewire how you think about the lines between yourself, technology, and those we love -- Bob ProehlThis is science fiction as domestic slice of life; a gripping, believable immersion in the day after tomorrow * Guardian *A book that poses interesting questions and does it with great poise itself. Wonderfully written with a realistic feeling family at the centre * SF Book Review *A smart, sensitive unpacking of the personal, political and social assumptions that go into the development and promotion of new devices. It's all the more powerful for being painfully ordinary, down to Val blaming herself for not resisting a technology she knows will harm her family * The Times *Watching these intriguing and imperfect family members finding a way to bring their orbits together is what We Are Satellites is really about. It's such a deeply humane portrait of a family that it barely needs its SF at all – even though the SF provides an unnervingly credible hint of what challenges families might face in the not-too-distant future, if we aren't quite there already * Locus Magazine *Very clever... SF which examines the effects of a particular change on a society has a long history and this book is an outstanding, intelligent addition to that category. If there is any justice, it should be appearing in future Award lists. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of this author's work' * Birmingham SF Group *A slow-burning novel... This is a book about technology with a very human core. It's a quietly compelling novel that will leave you looking at your relationship with technology with a fresh pair of eyes (but not bionic ones)' -- Geek Dad
