Book SynopsisPart of a series of exciting and luxurious Flame Tree Notebooks. Combining high-quality production with magnificent fine art, the covers are printed on foil in five colours, embossed then foil stamped. And they're powerfully practical: a pocket at the back for receipts and scraps, two bookmarks and a solid magnetic side flap. These are perfect for personal use and make a dazzling gift. This example is based on Leonardo da Vinci's 'Detail of the Head of the Virgin'. Painter, draughtsman, architect, military engineer, musician, scientific researcher, designer: Leonardo da Vinci was all these and more, and through his drawings we find the most direct access to his genius. The Head of the Virgin uses delicate shading and subtle gradations in red and black chalks. The approach, known as the sfumato technique, creates this realistic and beautiful image.

D Giles Ltd Lines of Discovery: 225 Years of American Drawing
Book SynopsisLines of Discovery: Four Centuries of American Drawing presents a major new thematic and chronological catalogue survey of the Columbus Museum's most significant holdings of drawings and works on paper, including examples in graphite, charcoal, monotype and pastel. At the heart of the Columbus Museum's collection, and of this volume, is the work of a remarkable individual, Dr. Phillip L. Brewer, who has amassed a truly significant collection of American works on paper both in terms of its depth and breadth. For the first time this volume presents nearly 200 of these master drawings, 120 of the most important of which are grouped into six chapters, illustrated in full colour, and accompanied by extended catalogue entries written by leading experts. A further 79 works are presented as colour and mono thumbnails interspersed amongst the images of the key works. Included are images by Copley, West and Cole that date from the earliest years of American nationhood; works by Oscar Bluemner, Arthur Dove and Morton Schamberg which herald the advent of modernism; while others by Hans Hoffmann, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Blanche Lazzell and Rico Lebrun confirm its continued presence through such varied expressions as social realism, surrealism and abstraction. While artists like Milton Avery, Jack Beal, Paul Cadmus, Philip Evergood, Nancy Grossman, and Louise Nevelson explore the strength and beauty of the human form, James Valerio and Andrew Wyeth document the changing faces of the natural world. Together these works, and Lines of Discovery, offer a comprehensive survey of the history of American art. AUTHOR: Stephen C.Wicks is curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Columbus Museum. Charles T. Butler is director of the Columbus Museum. Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr. is John Moors Cabot Curator of American Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. 155 colour & 80 b/w illustrations

HENI Publishing JENA Dusseldorf
Book SynopsisIn JENA Düsseldorf, first published in 2011, we follow Sabine Moritz and her artistic development, which began in 1989 at Offenbach University of Art and Design and continued in 1991 at the fine arts academy Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Following the publication of Lobeda in 2010, a collection of homogenous early drawings, the pictures featured in JENA Düsseldorf have greater diversity in terms of content and form reflecting Moritz steady progression as an artist. Moritz brings scenes to life with vibrant colours and experimental brushstrokes creating a range of textures and atmospheres in a variety of medium including oil, acrylic, charcoal and colour pencil. The repertoire of architectural motifs is expanded to include places of remembrance in the GDR, sculptures in public spaces and the typology of ‘empty places’. Some of the motifs from Lobeda reappear and are altered, drawing attention to the dynamic aspect of the process of recollection. The book also features a conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist in which Moritz talks about her personal life, her memories and makes reference to specific works. The modest and compact book, packed with over 200 colour illustrations, shows by way of example her search for an artistic position on her route from Jena to Düsseldorf.

Hatje Cantz Italian Architectural Drawings from the Cronstedt
Book SynopsisThis catalogue presents the first comprehensive study of the Italian architectural drawings in the Cronstedt Collection in the Nationalmuseum Stockholm, discussing 181 drawings dating from around 1570 to around 1620. Among them are works by Francesco da Volterra, Carlo Maderno and other Roman architects, executed for churches, chapels, palaces, gardens, and fountains—many constituting primary and almost unknown sources for late Mannerist and early Baroque architecture. Also included are plans and architectural details by French draughtsmen, meticulously documenting ancient monuments, as well as buildings by the Renaissance masters Bramante, Antonio da Sangallo, Michelangelo, and Vignola. Italian Architectural Drawings proposes new attributions in the light of recent scholarship, based on close examination of the drawings’ material (paper, medium, technique, mounting). Comparative illustrations and a photographic catalogue of the watermarks complete the volume..

Hatje Cantz Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt (Bilingual edition): Nichts
Book SynopsisEmployed as an office manager in the former GDR, and working as a self-taught artist, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt used her typewriter to create patterns and abstract compositions with characters and letters at the junction of Concrete Poetry, Dada, and Minimal Art. Her linguistic explorations that she developed further into collages later on, are often based on ambiguity. Published on the occasion of the large retrospective at MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam, NICHTS NEUES explores her typewritings, prints, collages, and paintings in thematic episodes. Although Wolf-Rehfeldt discontinued her artistic practice after the fall of the Berlin Wall, her art has lost none of its relevance. In a poetic, idiosyncratic, and often humorous way, the nonconformist artist explored themes such as environmental issues, intellectual freedom, community, and communication. Her sometimes subtle, sometimes more literal play with words, meanings, and forms continue to reveal the unexpected.

Hirmer Verlag Andy Warhol: Drag & Draw: The Unknown Fifties
Book SynopsisThis book highlights two series of little known drawings from the 1950's, drawings where Andy Warhol first explored the controversial and for him deeply personal subject of drag. His oeuvre during the first decade of his career, before he became the god father of Pop, has proven to be enormously influential on his life's work but remains little known. In 1953, Warhol created two unique series of drawings, quite different from his commissioned work. In one series, he developed an ensemble of spirited wome n that were derived from photographs of stage divas and — of men in drag. He delved deeper into the art of dressing as the opposite sex with his second series, a set of portraits of men posing in high and low drag. This book considers Warhol's work and its d ebt to newly discovered photographs that his friend, photographer Otto Fenn, staged explicitly for Warhol’s purpose. Drag & Draw sheds light on New York's secret gay and drag scenes during the repressive 1950s

Hirmer Verlag Ann Wolff: The Early Drawings - Frühe Zeichnungen
Book SynopsisThe German-Swedish artist Ann Wolff is a pioneer of the studio glass movement in Europe. Born in Lübeck in 1937, she has achieved international fame for her sculptures which mainly use the material glass, but she has always drawn as well. This volume now presents a collection based on a selection of sixty hitherto unpublished drawings from the 1980s. The works, executed in pencil on paper, focus on a female figure seen in reflections and duplications, sometimes surreal and whimsical in connection with animals and intermediate beings, and sometimes with a man or a child: dream worlds, pictures of the subconscious, often inspired by fairy tales. The pictures unfold their narrative potential as investigations of the female self in the social milieu of an age characterised by feminist movements and discussions regarding the relationship between the sexes.

Hirmer Verlag Jürgen Schilling: Nature as Landscape
Book SynopsisFor the past forty years, Jurgen Schilling (b. 1954) has been drawing the landscape of southern France. The art historian Wilhelm Schlink has accompanied his career from the beginning as a friend and collaborative thinker. Schlink describes in lively manner the artist’s approaches and reflections, especially against the background of the current debate about contemporary interpretations of the landscape. Since the 1970s Jurgen Schilling has found inspiration in the rough countryside between the Mediterranean, the Corbieres and the Minervois, where the natural elements can be experienced at first hand. Based on his studies of art history and philosophy relating to the broad field of landscape representation, he has created an oeuvre driven by the imperative of doing justice to events and experiences. Schilling uses in his work the raw materials and pigments found on location. A first retrospective of his work was held in Carcassonne in 2012.
