Each step is illustrated by use of a sepia coloured pencil and new steps are in violet so that it is very easy to distinguish which part needs to be drawn next. There are several simple steps from first outline to the completed dragon, varying with the complexity of the animal. The first dragons only require 5-7 steps and having gained competence doing these it will then be simple following Paul's technique to draw the very complex dragons illustrated at the end of the book. 3 in stock

Book SynopsisDiscover special colouring tips and tricks to make flat illustrations appear as if they’re about to jump right off the page! Each drawing is accompanied by step-by-step instructions and techniques tailored to the specific image. You’ll also find finishing techniques for maximizing the impact of the illusion, such as how to cut out and display your artwork and which angles are best for photographing your work to capture the full effect. There are 20 fantastic pictures included for you to cut out and show off!Trade ReviewLearn how to make simple flat shapes spring to life with this colouring book with a difference. A few stokes of the pencil and a parrot takes flight, a flying carpet takes off, a secret passageway goes deep into the ground and a playful kitten breaks through the paper to wave a paw. As a keen colourist I have quite a few colouring books so it is good to find one that takes the basic idea and goes somewhere new with it. The book opens with an explanation of how to make a drawing look three dimensional by using the rules of perspective to create an optical illusion. Learn how to use colour to show shadows, work out where the light is coming from and finally cut out the right sections to enhance the effect. It sounds complicated but it is simpler than you think, and suitable for a beginner. All you need is a spectrum of coloured pencils, a good rubber and a few other basics that most homes will have like a pencil sharpener, scissors or craft knife and a ruler. No brand names are used and the picture just shows a tin with a basic set of 24 colours; great to know that you don’t need to splash out on the most expensive professional quality pencils. Each of the 20 projects has a page sized photograph of the completed image plus nine steps with photographs of the work being done. There is a key showing all the colours used (nothing unusual, just basic shades without metallics) and the first picture uses two colours to show where the shadows lie and where the light source is coming from. At the back are all the projects printed on one side of the smooth white card with a useful dotted line where you can cut it out. Would that all coloring books had these features! There are tips scattered throughout and a guide showing how to photograph your work with your cellphone, prior to posting it proudly online with a hashtag indicating the source. This book, together with a tin of pencils would make a lovely gift for somebody… if you can bear to part with it! I’d love to see more innovative coloring books like this, well done Zakka Workshop. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *

Why, she asks, write a book about the details of hedges, apple blossoms, striped couches, and keyholes--the things that fill in the background and foreground of portraits? It's clear, though, that any artist will advance his or her colored pencil technique immeasurably through this book. The use of reference photos, demonstrations of feathering vs. definite strokes and the dense vs. airy approach, and excellent 'Frequently Asked Questions' boxes all make for a significant contribution to the teaching of this style of drawing. Book SynopsisFrom the intriguing mind behind Codex Seraphinianus comes this beautifully illustrated tribute to the famed Neapolitan character Pulcinella (or Punch as he is referred to in English). This short monograph on Pulcinella is conceived as a extension of the Codex Seraphinianus, an encyclopedia filled with variations and fantasies on a theme. Pulcinellopaedia Seraphiniana contains over one hundred extraordinary graphite illustrations with scarlet accents, some of which are depicted in comic-strip style. Conceived as a musical Suite, it is divided into nine scenes with an intermission. It features the oddly surreal and globally recognized character, whose origins have been lost in the mists of the time. An ancestor of Pulcinella was certainly Maccus, the protagonist of the Atellanae Fabulae, very popular farces in ancient Rome, but it was in the early seventeenth-century that the character assumed the name and costume that we all know.Trade Review"This illustrated tribute to the famed Neapolitan character Pulcinella (or “Punch” as he is referred to in English) contains more than 100 extraordinary pencil illustrations, some of which are depicted in comic-strip style."—Publishers Weekly"It’s a very different experience from “reading” the Codex and one where the physical medium of the paper book itself is put to essential use. Me, I love the thing and have been looking at it almost nonstop since they sent me the review copy"—DangerousMinds.net
