Simon & Schuster How Dogs Think

Book SynopsisOur understanding of how dogs think is littered with common misconceptions about the extent of their intellect and how they make sense of the world around them. How Dogs Think unravels the mystery of what a dog can understand and how much dogs can learn. World-renowned dog expert Stanley Coren explores the thought processes of dogs, describes how dogs solve problems, explains the depths and limits of their thinking and examines the kind of concepts which dogs can and cannot deal with. Along with practical advice for people who want to improve their dog''s learning ability and working intelligence, How Dogs Think will answer such questions as: Do dogs have a notion of time? To what extent do dogs understand what you say? How sharp are their senses? What do they see and hear? Do dogs have a sense of music, humour, empathy, guilt or love? Do they learn by observation the way that people do? How much can they remember? Do dogs have ESP or the ability to predict earthquakes, and is it true

  • The Invention of the Modern Dog

Johns Hopkins University Press The Invention of the Modern Dog

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe story of the thoroughly Victorian origins of dog breeds. For centuries, different types of dogs were bred around the world for work, sport, or companionship. But it was not until Victorian times that breeders started to produce discrete, differentiated, standardized breeds. In The Invention of the Modern Dog, Michael Worboys, Julie-Marie Strange, and Neil Pemberton explore when, where, why, and how Victorians invented the modern way of ordering and breeding dogs. Though talk of breed was common before this period in the context of livestock, the modern idea of a dog breed defined in terms of shape, size, coat, and color arose during the Victorian period in response to a burgeoning competitive dog show culture. The authors explain how breeders, exhibitors, and showmen borrowed ideas of inheritance and pure blood, as well as breeding practices of livestock, horse, poultry and other fancy breeders, and applied them to a species that was long thought about solely in terms of work andTrade ReviewCharles Darwin, Charles Dickens and P. T. Barnum walk into a pub . . . a classic comic set-up that can only lead to one punch line: The Invention of the Modern Dog. This chronicle—by science historians Michael Worboys and Neil Pemberton and historian Julie-Marie Strange—charts the confluence of biology, class, and popular entertainment that resulted in an unprecedented burst of nineteenth-century canine breeding. That tumult, they argue, stares out at us today from the eyes of our dogs.—NatureReveals how the Victorians invented the modern way of ordering and breeding man's best friend.—The Sunday PostIn The Invention of the Modern Dog, the authors show how our modern attitudes to breeds have been shaped by Victorian cultural ideals. The book makes for a fascinating read for anyone interested in the origins of today's dog breeds.—Pets MagazineWorboys, Strange and Pemberton have produced a magnificent book . . . a wonderfully lively text that traces the sources of our own obsession with doggy design and offers a gentle warning about what is at stake when we fiddle too far.—The GuardianHighly entertaining and plentifully illustrated.—Times Literary SupplementTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction Part I. 1800-1873Chapter 1. Pen & Sword Books Ltd Dogs: Working Origins and Traditional Tasks

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWith his signature hands-on style, Mike Loades experiences what it is like to handle various dogs engaged in their traditional tasks. These adventures take him to the Jordanian desert, where he shares the saddle of his camel with a Saluki and to the green hills of Wales, where he works cattle with a Corgi. He mushes Huskies in Alaska, drives carriages with Dalmatians and flies falcons with spaniels. Each encounter not only highlights the bond between humans and dogs, it also frames that connection in its historical context. Different types of dogs appear the way they do because, at some stage in their development, they were bred selectively for a specialist job. The author takes key types on a walk through history. Along the way he explores the methods and practices of their original occupations. He delves into when, where and why they were first bred as the types we recognize today. The fascinating and engaging text is supported by over 250 stunning colour photographs of dogs in action. It results in an illuminating journey through many cultures and time periods. This book is a personal and heartfelt tribute to the enduring partnership between humans and dogs.

  • Poppy in the Wild: A Lost Dog, Fifteen Hundred

Pegasus Books Poppy in the Wild: A Lost Dog, Fifteen Hundred

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom the #1 New York TImes bestselling author of The Dog Lived (And So WIll I) comes a tale of love and devotion defying all the oddsAfter losing her beloved beagle Daphne to lymphoma, author Teresa Rhyne launches herself into fostering other dogs in need, including Poppy, a small, frightened beagle rescued from the China dog meat trade. The elation of rescue quickly turns to hysteria when Poppy breaks free from a potential adopter during a torrential thunderstorm and disappears into a rugged, mountainous, 1,500 acre wilderness park, bordered by a busy road. In the quest to find Poppy, Teresa will work with rescue specialists, volunteers, psychics, a Native American who communes with owls, helpful neighbors, decidedly unhelpful strangers, a howling woman, the police, crushing dead ends, glimmers of hope, and her own emotional and physical limits as she sits in the wind and rain in the wilderness park for hours each dusk and dawn with bags of roasted chicken and her dirty socks, the human lure for a terrified beagle and packs of less terrified coyotes. Meanwhile, Poppy encounters heavy rains, a homeless encampment, the Sheriff and his wife, a series of strangers, speeding traffic, hawks, and, ultimately, a world of people willing to do anything to protect rather than harm her. Through an unexpected late night encounter, Poppy is finally caught. After her time in the wild, a surprisingly transformed Poppy reunites with Teresa. Now newly confident and brave Poppy is ready to be welcomed into her forever home.Trade Review“Teresa J. Rhyne is the best kind of person, a dog person. In this beautiful, honestly told memoir, she leads us through an adventure that will inspire any dog lover. A life-affirming read, or as any dog would say if they could speak, ‘a real treat!’" -- W. Bruce Cameron, #1 New York Times and #1 USA Today bestselling author of A Dog's Purpose"Teresa Rhyne's books about dogs always leave the heart feeling warm, but this one also leaves the soul feeling especially full. Poppy in the Wild is about far more than the usual bond between a person and a pup. It's ultimately a lesson in the true meaning of the word commitment, and a story about the very best of humanity in a time of crisis." -- Kim Kavin, author of THE DOG MERCHANTS"If I come back in another life, I want to return as one of Teresa Rhyne's beloved beagles so I can bask in her love and devotion and dedication. This is a love story first and foremost, but it's also an invaluable resource about waht to do (and what not to do) if your four-legged companion goes missing." -- Peter Zheutlin, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of RESCUE ROAD and THE DOG WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN"Delightful. Teresa's writing is imbued with humor. Poppy in the Wild is a wonderful, heartwarming read. You will love meeting Teresa and will want to take her out for a drink. Maybe you will even want to adopt a beagle. But, as she points out, there are countless dogs and cats in need of foster homes and adoptive families. There’s even one waiting for a home near you." -- Pamela Kramer * Book Reporter *"A heartfelt story that highlights the powerful bond that can exist between humans and animals, while reminding readers how emotinoally rewarding the self-less act of rescuing dogs from shelters and other bad circumstances can be." -- Joel McGee, Former Animal Planet Development Executive and Executive Producer of the CBS TV Show, "Lucky Dog""For anyone who loves dogs as much as Rhyne and thinks sharing a bed with a beagle is heaven, this often tender story will hold great appeal...A highly detailed account that will be most appreciated by those who enjoyed Rhyne’s first two books." * Kirkus Reviews *"Rhyne is a quirky narrator and an overwhelming passion for dogs, especially beagles. As she records Poppy’s adventures, she also shares valuable information on finding lost pets. Dog lovers will root for this tiny beagle and her devoted seeker." * Booklist *"Poppy will have you laughing out loud.” * Cellar Door Books *

Book SynopsisKac Young never imagined that after a lifetime as a 'cat person' she would fall in love with, and adopt, a tiny rescue dog called Talulah. She loved other people's dogs, but "I never had time and they smell funny, lick your makeup off and pee on your new shoes." All that changed when she met Talulah during a trip out with friends and just had to take her home to a house in the forest in California, shared with her partner and six cats and visited by deer, squirrels and skunks. The stories of life as a first-time adopter describe Kac's progression from slightly shell-shocked beginner to savvy, adoring dog guardian.Right from the start, Kac consulted behaviourist Lisa Tenzin-Dolma on all things dog-related, and Lisa's observations and guidance on a wide range of subjects follow Kac's stories, so that those with little experience of living with a dog can get started on the right foot and paw and build a loving, trusting relationship.Entertaining and informative, this book will appeal to both new and seasoned dog guardians.Trade ReviewVery well written paperback basically about a cat lady acquiring a dog! Written by mac Young, whose steep learning curve consisted of becoming a good doggy Mom to Talulah, a small rescue dog. The book takes the reader through rescue centres and how to find the right dog for you, this is achieved in a super true story form in how Talulah settles in and necessities such as toilet training, travel, feeding, other pets... in this case six cats! Chapters follow with Talulah making appearances in photos throughout. I love the last paragraph as I think it is so important. 'Have fun with your dogs, and make the most of every moment. Drink in his love and devotion and offer the same in return.' I think sometimes our daily lives take over and we forget our most devoted friends have such a short time with us. Both entertaining and informative, this book is totally delightful and a wonderful read for dog owners new and old. Full of information and beautiful photos and a true story shared. - Dog Training Weekly. When Kac Young adopted a rescue dog called Talulah she consulted Lisa Tenzin-Dolma on all things dog-related. The Supposedly Enlightened Person Guide To Raising A Dog is irresistible. Pick up Talulah today!- Geelong Obedience Dog Club. This soft backed book of some 128 pages and over 20 chapters I have read at least three times before commencing this review and, as someone who has been involved in the subject for a lifetime, learned something new each time I read it. I found it fascinating and am convinced that anyone, irrespective of experience, has a new dog, no matter whether puppy of adult, will find it an extremely helpful guide. I found each chapter- no matter how short- interesting and instructive. I was learning without realising it! I am convinced that anyone who acquires a new dog, mongrel or pedigree, will benefit from these chapters whatever the reader's experience. I am sure it is not a book that will be lest gathering dust on the shelf but will be referred to time and time again. Buy it, read it and be educated and entertained. Whatever your experience I am sure you will not regret the decision. - Trevor Turner. In addition to the reading lists of dog enthusiasts, "The Supposedly Enlightened Person's Guide to Raising a Dog" is very highly recommended for community library pet/wildlife collections. - Midwest Book Review. This charming book is a must have for any first time dog owner. It is so easy to read, honest, and packed full of brilliant advice. Unlike some dog books that just give you the information you need in a somewhat boring and sterile way, this book is created by two skilled teachers, the best kind of teachers, the teachers you don't realise are instructing you because they make it fun, a story, a journey. What they don't do is make it seem that adopting a dog or buying a puppy is easy with no drama. When bringing a dogs onto your home and life there is always adjustments to be made by both sides; it is how you manage those shifts that is important. Kac was lucky enough to have one of the best mentors I know, in Lisa's gentle, non-judgemental guidance and Talulah and Truffle thrived on Kac's compassionate approach and Lisa's common-sense instructions. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is the inspiring story of Lily, a puppy born with a rare disability. Lily was only four minutes old, nursing at her mother's side; already milk was pouring out of her nose and mouth, soaking her and everything around her. Receiving so little nourishment, she wasn't thriving, and within weeks she had a respiratory infection. Euthanasia was compassionately suggested to spare her further distress - even if she lived at all. Against all the odds, however, her owner decided that this sweet little puppy should have a chance at life. Laura weaned Lily early, letting her lick puppy mousse from her fingertip. A month later, she was hand-feeding Lily pieces of water-soaked puppy kibble one at a time during frequent feeds, but still the puppy choked with almost every swallow. Eventually, Lily was diagnosed with a swallowing disability ... extremely rare ... and incurable. Amazingly, Lily has survived against the odds due to the creative and intensive management of her condition. Her story may give hope to others, and inspire them not to give up their animals who may have life-threatening conditions. Lily even became a Pets As Therapy dog, and helps in schools and residential care homes - she truly is a working miracle.Trade ReviewLovely, lovely story not only about a stunning dog, but also about the shear determination of her owner to help her survive when most others would have given up. The book is a story from when the litter are first born, and is written step by step through the intensive car and steep learning curve on how to look after limit and for her to live. Lily's owner writes of all the trails and tribulations that have been agent through and that they are still going through in order for Lily to thrive. This moving and truly incredible story can only inspire others whose dogs are facing life-threatening conditions. Lily is unable to survive without help to feed and drink, however her owner's intensive and dedicated management of her incredibly rare disability is astonishing. An amazing paperback to read, which I didn't put down once started! Lovely photos as well. Well worth it. - Dog Training Weekly. This soft back of some 70 pages including a very useful index I found fascinating. I re-read the book on three occasions, learning something new each time. Well written and beautifully illustrated with over 30 colours photographs of Lily, the Golden Retriever star of the book. A very careful description of Lily's problems gives the background and shows just how dedicated her owner was in first of all noticing her problems with suckling then feeding and drinking. The sled to an incredible effort which resulted in this puppy growing to adulthood and training as a Pets as Therapy dog. Subsequent chapters lead the reader through Lily's everyday life, not a page of which I found boring. In my view the book is well worth every penny. - Trevor Turner. This book is about breeder ethics. It's a new way of seeing inter species relationships. It's a sharing of transcendent moments of healing and of inspiration of self and others. Despite being advised to put Lily down, Laura endured and was richly rewarded. This lives of Lily, Pilot and Laura are interwoven into a glowing tapestry of caring - not just for dogs, but for the society around them. - Geelong Obedience Dog Club. It's a heartwarming tale of a woman who devoted her life to giving the lovely Lily a chance at life, despite a condition that requires three very careful feedings a day and watching to be sure food isn't found on the sly during walks. A single careless moment along with some counter-surfing could turn into disaster for a dog unable to swallow correctly. Laura admits at the end of the book she never intended to have a second dog. She had gotten Pilot as a puppy just four months after her husband's death from cancer. But now she can't imagine life without having both dogs who helped during her bereavement. It shows that despite the challenge, the reward is always greater and that other animals born with genetic disorders may live full lives if only given the opportunity. - Association of Professional Dog Trainers. This book is a moving and powerful story about Lily, a dog who was born unable to survive unaided ... This book is also an inspiration to others not to give up on animals with life-threatening conditions.Edition DogTable of ContentsChapter 1: Puppy Time Chapter 2: A Trio in Trouble Chapter 3: Survival Tactics Chapter 4: Diagnosis Chapter 5: Lessons for Life Chapter 6: Big Brother Bentley Chapter 7: One in 5,639 (Out of About 8.5 Million) Chapter 8: Not Her Final Chapter

Book SynopsisThere are many books that celebrate our canine friends, but few so colourfully and evocatively demonstrate the sheer enjoyment they experience just from being a dog. The photographs in this book are not about the bond between us and our canine companions, the results of dog training, or the ever-expanding canine wardrobe. Rather, the focus is on how dogs behave when they are freed from everyday constraints, and can indulge their natural instincts. The unsung heroes here are the owners, who, after ensuring that their beloved best friend would be safe, let him or her run free to interact with others for the photoshoot. The resultant images showcase pure doggie delight - as the expressions on the dogs' faces demonstrate! Whether chasing balls or other dogs, mud-bathing, swimming, or rolling, this is a joyous celebration of dogs simply enjoying themselves!Trade ReviewWow, what a wonderful book. A hardback from publisher Hubble & Hattie stuffed full of beautiful photo's of dogs playing and having fun. On every page there is a beautiful quality photo, but not a standard pet portrait, but dogs jumping into water, splashing and shaking their heads, rolling in mud and playing chase. Vibrant stunning pictures which demonstrate a dog's total commitment to having a wonderful life. Cheryl Murphy, the author, is a professional photographer and has done many formal studio shoots of people's pets in her work, but wanted to explore some natural behaviour and photograph this in an uninhibited environment. This excellent quality publication would be a superb gift for a budding pet photographer and dog lover as well. - Dog Training Weekly. The dogs in this photography book aren't posing, they're simply enjoying life. Pictured during playtime, they haven't a care in the world and this project celebrates their natural zest for life and individual personalities. Inspired by her late Golden Retriever, Tilly, photographer and author Cheryl Murphy decided to explore photographing dogs in a natural environment with no constraints on their behaviour. Having been a dog owner for many years, she's well aware of the individual traits and characteristics our pets have. This book makes for an ideal gift and coffee table read to flick through. There are plenty of pictures to giggle over, and Cheryl's dog Nellie's facial expressions are particularly hilarious. - Dogs Monthly. Thanks to the indisputable growth of Instagram and Snapchat, together with our unwavering devotion to pursuing all things cute and canine, it's difficult to pick up your smartphone without drowning in waves of Pugs in pirate outfits or Bulldogs in bikinis. And so the latest publication from ethical publishers Hubble and Hattie makes a refreshing and welcome change. The book contains 97 pages of full colour photographs, and there's not an uncomfortable animal in sight. Images of Chihuahuas in teacups have been replaced with wonderful pictures which demonstrate the natural beauty and fun-loving spirit of our canine companions. Author Cheryl Murphy, a professional photographer, was keen to capture this spirit, which is so often suppressed; how often do we truly let our dogs behave like dogs? Moreover, how often do we actually stop and appreciate the wonders of their body language and the incredible variation between breeds? Book SynopsisMost books about dogs talk about the history of various breeds, and are filled with useful training advice, yet we learn almost nothing about how dogs think and feel. Dogs are considered to be easily trained creatures of instinct, but this attitude falls short of the mark. It doesn't take into consideration that dogs are thinking, feeling beings; individuals, just as we are, with different personalities, strengths and weaknesses, and distinct emotional lives. The aim of this book is to have dog owners get to know their companions from a different perspective, through simple routines and games that can be carried out at home. Owners will learn about - and see for themselves - the mental abilities that their dog possesses, and understand their dog.

This book is an educational tool box of ideas for those who believe in dogs and people merging together and gaining wisdom and strength from each other. - Geelong Obedience Dog Club. It's a well known fact that dog owners tend to be healthier and happier than people who don't own dogs. In fact, dogs have the ability to change people's lives for the better. Hounds Who Heal is the charming new book by Chris Kent who founded the K9 Project, an organisation that helps disadvantaged and troubled youngsters. Chris started her career working as a probation officer. During this time she also found the time to re-home an assortment of rescue dogs with the help of her husband Kevin. The K9 Project was created after Chris cared for Miles aged 15 who had spent his life in and out of the care system. Miles was certainly a challenge, displaying aggressive behaviour and generally throwing his weight around. However, Miles was shocked when he saw Ruby, a Staffie-cross, bully several other dogs owned by Chris. Watching this act of over-excited dog play helped Miles understand the effects of bullying and he resolved to change his own behaviour. And so the K9 Project was born. Throughout this book we discover just how many young lives have been enriched by the healing power of dogs. The book also includes some lovely photos of both the dos and youngster who have benefited from the amazing work of Chris and the K9 Project. Hounds Who Heal is a lovely read, and shows us just how special the bond between humans and dogs really is. - Pet Owners Association. Every so often, there is a book that you find so enjoyable and enthralling that you don't want it to come to an end. This book is definitely one of those! Chris Kent eloquently tells the story of how the K9 Project came to be. This unique venture has seen Chris and her family of rescue dogs help to turn around the lives of those struggling on life's joinery. The story of how the K9 Project developed and its continued success is both uplifting and inspirational, told in Chris' warm and engaging style. There are chapters devoted to the dogs themselves, as well as to the people they have helped. The canine star of the project, Cassie, has her own chapter, and Chris' love and admiration for each of the dogs stones through. They each have their own unique and sometimes sad stories – as do the people who have found their lives transformed thanks to the work of Chris and her amazing canine therapists!
