  • Aesthetics in Digital Photography

ISTE Ltd and John Wiley & Sons Inc Aesthetics in Digital Photography

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAutomatically evaluating the aesthetic qualities of a photograph is a current challenge for artificial intelligence technologies, yet it is also an opportunity to open up new economic and social possibilities. Aesthetics in Digital Photography presents theories developed over the last 25 centuries by philosophers and art critics, who have sometimes been governed by the objectivity of perception, and other times, of course, by the subjectivity of human judgement. It explores the advances that have been made in neuro-aesthetics and their current limitations. In the field of photography, this book puts aesthetic hypotheses up against experimental verification, and then critically examines attempts to "scientifically" measure this beauty. Special attention is paid to artificial intelligence techniques, taking advantage of machine learning methods and large databases.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Image and Gaze xi Chapter 1 The Legacy of Philosophers 1 1.1. • Road to Repeal

The Lilliput Press Ltd Road to Repeal

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRoad to Repeal: 50 Years of Struggle in Ireland for Contraception and Abortion opens in 1970 when the Irish Women's Liberation Movement burst onto the streets and screens of a society bewildered by women demanding equal status in the home and in the workplace. It tracks the bitter backlash to their successes that culminated in the Eighth Amendment's fixture in the Irish Constitution in 1983. Over five decades, Road to Repeal describes and depicts individual tragedy, referendums, court cases, the actions of a misogynist Church and State. It shines a light on the journey of thousands of women and girls who braved stigma and hardship, often travelling alone and anonymously for medical treatment they were denied in Ireland. Road to Repeal closes with the visually dazzling Together For Yes campaign whose determination and grit finally got rid of Article 40.3.3 on May 25th, 2018.Trade Review“Amazing history, very pertinent now” MARGARET ATWOOD ; "Road to Repeal is a splendid production, both visually and in textual content. There is a terrific balance between the vibrant images and the really informative text." CATRIONA CROWE, archivist and broadcaster ; "This powerful book is a memento of what it was like to grow up in a theocracy and a monument to the courage of the citizenry who organised and fought for bodily autonomy over decades, across generations, classes, and genders." PAULA MEEHAN, poet ; "The editors of Road to Repeal do an exceptional job of charting that painful history and exposing how women in Ireland were outcast, stigmatised, and criminalised for having a body. They have set it down in a beautifully produced photobook that should be required reading because it explains why we are where we are right now, which is in a country where women still have a struggle on their hands." Clodagh Finn, Irish Examiner

Book SynopsisAs straightforward as it is encouraging, this concise guide to the art and science of photography can help anyone take a good photo, regardless of the camera they are using. Photography has never been so easy-or so hard. While virtually anyone with a smartphone has the ability to take a photo, most of us don't know how to take a great one. Free of intimidating technical jargon, and filled with suggestions, examples, and helpful illustrations, this book offers everything the average person needs to deliver a well-executed, interesting, and thoughtful image. Its concise chapters explore the anatomy of digital, film, and smartphone cameras; photo editing apps and lenses; and the basic principles of composition, light, and exposures times. It offers pointers on different types of images, such as portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and travel photography, and a list of projects at the end of the book will inspire readers to put what they learn into practice. Throughout it encourages readers to see the world as a photo opportunity, and to develop a photographer's eye in every situation. Because the most important element in the picture-taking process is not the sophistication of the camera, but the creative vision of the person holding it.

  • Digital Photography Explained

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Digital Photography Explained

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book can serve as a missing guide for technical features of digital photography that many enthusiasts are unaware of or remain bewildered about. An interesting example is that cameras with sensor sizes differing by a factor of three or four can have the same size resolution. The advantages of sensors — found in larger and more expensive cameras — are elucidated to readers. Another example is the explanation to why the depth of field increases as the lens aperture becomes smaller. The transition from diffraction-limited to sensor-limited resolution is also discussed. Through these examples, one discovers that the optics of practical, thick compound lenses can be understood using the formulas for the more familiar thin lenses. The book further expounds on procedures that are necessary to obtain true color images. For example, CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensors are equipped with color filters such that the intensity of the red, green and blue colors are recorded separately. Since the colors must be combined for print and digital displays, the separate colors recorded in the camera must somehow be merged. This process known as demosaicing is vividly explained. In fact, the technology for defining colors is a separate issue that is also treated in this book.Readers will learn that both our vision and computer displays respond in a nonlinear fashion that requires an operation known as gamma mapping, which is built into all monitors. An important takeaway for camera and photography enthusiasts is that in order to avoid moiré effects in certain types of photographs, most cameras have an anti-aliasing filter that has the unfortunate effect of smearing the resolution. This filter can, however, be removed in certain high-end cameras.
